"orphaning the QIF is unforgiveable"
Orphaning QIF is not forgiveable. We looked for a replacement and after trying the open source jGnash, found it wasn't up to managing our five years of Quicken records.

We finally elected Account Express 3. See

"Less than one star - terrible!!!"
I've been using excel to track my money for years, and just bought quicken to streamline it. The only way to get any of my historical information in is to type each entry individually! If your bank is not a participating institution (if they didn't pay Quickn/Intuit additional charges) the only way you can enter your transactions is by typing each one individually! What's the point in automating a system, if you can't automate it? It's not even something you can upgrade - no imports from excel or any other format in any 2005 quicken! Not a good deal.

"WASTE OF MONEY"
If I am not sure, I play it smart and buy the program used. In short I was not satisfied with what I recieved. If the anecdote, "You get what you pay for." was applicable in this case, this program would be worth it's price, but it's worth less than I paid. Amazon low price of 13 some odd dollars.

"Great Product...great price"
I've been using Quicken for 5 years and think it is a great product. I just bought this new version to replace Quicken 2000. The new version has a number of improved features. It was really easy to transfer the data from my old computer/old version of Quicken to 2005. I used online chat and found them to be very helpful. Not sure why this product gets such a bad rap.

"I thought it would be better than Quickn 2002. I was wrong!"
I was perfectly happy with my older deluxe version of Quicken, but found that a)I didn't use most of the deluxe features, b)had several years worth of transactions that I couldn't archive due to a bug, and c)due to a bank change, I could no longer get transaction downloads. So, I bought 2005 basic. BIG MISTAKE! This "new improved" product is so cumbersome and confusing, I've practically stopped using it. When I start it, there are "messages" about my accounts, but I can't read them in the basic version. All I can do is delete them. The "home" page has 8, count them, 8 "Cash Flow Services" options that actually take you to sign-up pages touting for-fee additional services, many of which my bank already provides for free. And there are buttons to quicken.com EVERYWHERE that you have to work to get rid of. (Hellooooo. If I'd wanted to use quicken.com to pay all my bills, I would not have purchased Quicken.) This product is like one of those teaser game CDs that cost $5.00 but only gives you one level. And I don't really want the other levels. All I want is a product that does what it did before in a way that avoids making me relearn everything!

Ok, on the up-side, it does do a pretty good job of keeping track of my bank transactions and it seems like you can tailor it to suit some specific financial priorities, but it's just so incredibly painful to have to relearn EVERYTHING just because the banking industry changed download file formats. Microsoft may be trying to take over the software industry, but at least they don't want to be my bank so much that they totally screw up an otherwise good product.

What our customer's say!

"Can't go wrong with Quicken", Quicken is the best product around for organization of your finances

"Still learning ", I bought Quicken since I wanted to be able to keep track of my expenses. I am taking a class to learn to use it. I am not yet proficient with it, but it seems promising.

"Just changed banks, and got bumped by Quicken 2005", Well, to follow up on most of the other reviews: Intuits choice, not to allow .qif imports for checking accounts anymore, it the big bummer. I didn't realize this issue, until I recently moved.
At my old location I was using Bank of America, and based on their suggestion I upgraded to the 2005 version. Since I just moved I had to switch banks, since Bank of America is not an option here. Yesterday I tried my first download with the new bank, and found out about the .qif issue.

Frankly, I find it outrageous that the "leader" in the personal financial software world more or less secretly takes these measures. Quicken is a great product to track your finances, but since my financial world pretty much tracks around my checking accounts, it is now - at least in its current version and with my current bank - useless to me. Good thing I got the 2005 version for free (that is, for buying a TurboTax product at some point), but it looks like I have to go back to the "old" 2003 version now.

Bottom line: Make sure your bank does provide online exchange formats (.ofx) and is listed as one of the banks that allows online service with this software, otherwise stay away from it. Suggested fixes like downloading into a cash account are futile in my eyes, I might as well then handtype the information from the banks online statements.

"Quicken basic 2005", I did not order QB2005 but was sent it. I inquired and you responded with that I must have pushed the 1 click order, what ever that is. I asked for an explanation of what QB2005 was and got no answer, except I should return it for credit. I want to know what it the program QB2005 is, and is it part of the Quick books 2005?. Don't tell me I did the wrong thing when this is your error. Please explain.

"Great product - I had no problems", I was scared because of the reviews of the previous version and didn't upgrade to 2003 version and then the bad reviews of this version made me nervous that I would never upgrade. My old Quicken worked fine but it was extremely old and I wanted some of the more advanced interfaces with the banks. I finally decided to jump knowing I was probably steering into trouble.

I must say that my upgrade from an old version of Quicken went extremely smoothly! Not one hiccup. It converted several years of history files and all my current quicken files from QIF format.

My upgrade went smooth but I prepared. Mind you, I run Windows XP with latest drivers and am saavy with computer hardware and Operating Systems. I'm glad I didn't listen to the negative reviews in this case but to give them credit, there are numerous operating systems, hardware, drivers etc and sympatize with them for having problems -- so make sure you meet compatibility before you purchase and definitely back up your files before starting any upgrade. I did hear that the initial release of 2005 had some bugs on the CD and you had to go to the website to download some file but that's just rumour, but do look for the latest product in the stores (Amazon carries the good stuff -- I bought from here). I do give credit to Quicken for making a product that serves so many people on so many different computer systems for so many years.

I've been using the new 2005 now for several months -- No problems, I'm so glad I upgraded.

Bought from Amazon - they shipped fast! Great Service! Great Store!

"Good at what it does, but doesn't help to get out of debt ", I find Quicken to be good at what it's supposed to do -- track and manage expenses, creating reports to see spending trends, and paying bills. But, I found it was lacking in providing me direction on how to get out of debt. I found this direction, however at www.onepaycheckatatime.com. This web site has interactive that guide you through the process of targeting and paying down debt on a paycheck by paycheck basis. I use it in coordination with Quicken to guide me on which bills to pay, when and how much. Try it!

"One big cross-sell for other Inuit products", I am very disatisifed with Quicken. At every turn, the software attempts to sell me into a different product like Quicken BillPay or an IMG account. Additionally, it really only works with other Quicken products which means if you manage your financial life elsewhere (say at a bank or your investment firm). It is not providing any of the benefits like making budgetiug simple that it promised.

"Also angry with Intuit", I agree with the other reviews about the dishonesty by Intuit that they do not support importing *.qif format files that are supplied by many banks. My credit union is not a big conglomerate, and should not be forced by Intuit to jump through new hoops and redesign its online services.

I do want to suggest that there is a relatively simple workaround. I created a "cash" account that Quicken 2005 permits qif imports. Then I cut and paste the transactions into the appropriate checking, etc. account.

This workaround is more trouble than it should be, but if you're stuck with a purchased copy of Quicken 2005 and don't want to bother trying to roll back to an earlier version, then it isn't a bad way to go.

Also I will comment that Quicken has some really bad issues with its secure website. Am I the only person trying to log in or make purchases on their website that finds the secure server just doesn't respond? Then I tried to use online chat to find out what was going on and after more than an hour (mostly waiting), the chat support rep didn't have a clue that there was a problem and couldn't contact anyone.

Maybe I should actually review the product, but I am too tired of dealing with all the hassles Intuit has created for customers to bother commenting on its features. Sigh.

"Intuit Used to Value Its Customers. Now It Doesn't", When Intuit stopped supporting Quicken 2002 I moved to Quicken 2005 Basic. A lot has changed in a few years. What a disappointment. It's full of annoyances, which may seem small, but add up to an unhappy experience. For example:

1. Quicken advertises its various functions on the bottom of most screens. That takes up screen space better spent on viewing your financial information.

2. Every time I log on it asks me if I want to make Quicken my default for downloading account information from financial institutions. I answer "no" each time. So it keeps on asking. Every other dialogue box I've seen has a box labeled "Don't Ask This Question Again." Not Inuit.

3. They've changed the way you enter information on your investment accounts. Instead of a register view, they force you through a wizard (if there's a way out of it I haven't found it). Why they couldn't give a choice between the "classic" and new view is beyond me.

What these problems have in common is they demonstrate a lack of customer-focus by Intuit. You do things there way or no way. This is sad as Intuit was once a very customer-focused organization.

Quicken still does the basics very well. If they just weren't so deperate to push their functions and services at you, if they just weren't so inwardly-focused, it would be a pleasure to use -- like it used to be. As of now, though, it's simply driving folks like me elsewhere. Anyone know of a good alternative?

"I've wasted so much time being scared by these reviews", Several years ago I needed to upgrade to a new version of Quicken or Money due to a bank merger. I had been a happy Quicken user for many years before that. The reviews on Quicken were terrible (like you see below) and the reviews on Money were OK so I went with Money.

I think I've wasted about five years struggling with Money and not moving to Quicken because of the constantly negative reviews. What a mistake! Money has spent years misassigning my transactions, introducing errors into my registers, and generally being to heavy and too aggressive about assuming what I want from it.

This year I got Quicken Basic free with Turbo Tax. I figured, what the heck. It's free. What a great upgrade!

Quicken Basic is quick, smooth, and clean. It easily downloaded my accounts, hooked up to my bank, and managed my credit card. The interface is smooth and easy to use.

Quicken Basic is the Firefox of financial planning software. Bare bones, easy to use, and fast.

Five Stars! It's still a great product!
