Others say...
"READ THIS..." I wanna start out by saying that not everyone will like this game. I am only 14 (just because i cant be below 14 if i wanna post this lol, im really one year younger) but i love it, and i have been playing for about 5 months. If you have played everquest one you will like this game. The graphics are amazing (if u have a decent computer) and the gameplay is awesome. The only thing is, of course since i play the game ill tell you how great it is. Most other people either tell you how amazing it is or how horrible it is. This game has also been changed a lot since its debut so ill go over some of the changes in LU 20 and from KoS (Kingdom of Sky) expansion.
1. Your character can reach an adventure level of 70. 2. There is a new achievement point system for players over level 20 3. Guilds can now reach level 50. 4. There are two new arenas for PvP (player versus player) 5. There are all new heritage quests, quests to get items from the original everquest game. 6. 30 new collection quests, for items found across Norrath that can be turned in to a collocter for exp and a reward. 7. You can now choose your proffession as you start the game, no longer requiring longg hours on quests to advance your level 8. There are now better tutorial islands for the beginners. 9. not from KoS but, for people who want to interact more with others, the servers have merged, causing almost all of the servers to be "heavy" so you can always find a group.
I think just trying this game would be one of your best moves to find out what its like. In 30 days of the free trial, if you work hard, im sure you can get to level 15-20 or beyond. In order to really experience this game you really need to play it for 30 days at least.
I have never played WoW so i cant say that eq2 is better than it however i can say that you need a lot of patience and maturity to really like this game. The guilds in this game also help low leveled characters out a lot. They can help you with quests and often like to invite new characters just to help out. I havent met any unfreindly everquest players and they all seem to treat everyone equally. If you dont like what people are saying though, you can choose to take out different chat channels from your chat window where all the messages appear as well as put people to your /ignore list.
I am not going to say that certain groups of people will like the game and certain groups wont, such as married couples. My guild is run by a married couple who completly love to play the game however i know that it is also frustrating for two people to try to succeed in this game alone. As someone has mentioned already, if you want to solo the game all the way through dont play this game. That is also incorrect, you can solo throufgh the whole game if you prefer. I will admit that it isnt as easy to solo as it is to group with people however it is just as possible.
When i read the other comments people made i could tell whether they were on WoW's side or EQ2's side by the way they owuld bash the opposite game. I have just tried to tell some the strong points of this game to you and cant really compare it to WoW. I hope it helped you, whoever you are reading this article, to know what its like to actually play the game and some of the good things about it.
EQI Cathan 56th level Monk Tarew Marr Server ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EQII Cathan 22nd level Monk Befallen Server
"Beautiful, but no soul" I was a long-time player of EQ1 -- playing since beta4. I loved the feeling of openness that EQ1 gave you, the feeling that you were in a world and could do whatever you wanted. Groups were a choice, not a requirement. Zones were scary and huge, but most had something to do at any level. You could buff someone as you ran by, or give 100p to a monster, shout it out to the zone, and watch the lowlevels swing into action to hunt that mob down before it despawned. The game was only limited by your imagination.
EQ2 doesn't deliver that same openness. Instead, you are railroaded into a series of zones and quests, and a single playstyle. It's like they took any chance for you, the player, to operate outside the planned experience that the developers had in mind for you.
Not to my liking at all. It lasted 2 months before I deleted it from my system. Compare that to 7+ years for playing EQ1.
Pros: gorgeous graphics, fairly intuitive gameplay, lots of quests, well-developed tradeskills.
Cons: system hog, many bugs still, very few zones, not a very compelling storyline, boring spell lines, I could go on.
As the title says -- gorgeous, but not very fun.
"Great game!!!!" I recently switched from playing World Of Warcraft to this because of the annoying immature teens who litter that game and I have been having ten times the fun since making that decision.
Yes, the game is more complicated. If you don't like the game just because you don't have the patience to figure things out then maybe you shouldn't be playing these types of games in the first place. The fact that this game is more invoved makes it far more intense and interesting. The area that I am in right now,Freeport, is huge and has tons of quests to accomplish.
This game seems to attract an older crowd which is great since you don't have to deal with idiots every ten minutes. The world is larger, the game more interesting, and the characters more highly developed than World Of Warcraft. Make the switch, you won't be dissapointed.
"HORRIBLE" This game is a waste of $$$$. The first EQ was the greatest. The only problem was that there was 10 expantions for it which was pretty retarded. This game has great graphics, but the more pretty-looking the game gets, from my experience the crappier it gets(Except for HL2 and cs souce!!). I would strongly recomend WoW over Eq2.1 thing that is so retarded is how much memory it takes up. Anyway get WoW istead of this and ull thank me and LUV ME FOREVER!!!!!
"An unimaginative game by irritating developers" This game was a very disappointing release by SOE. There seems to have been minimal effort put into it. Allow me to elaborate...
Each armor class has but one model, so every armor upgrade varies only by color. Furthermore, don't even think about being fashionable in this game. Even if you do somehow manage to achieve the look you want, the devs will change it on a whim (they have made black robes for evil-aligned players pinkish purple and left it that way permanently...calling it an "improvement" in the patch notes).
They have "Adventure Packs" which cost 5-7$ and are so-called mini-expansions. However, they are merely just a few rooms (where the walls, ceiling, and floor are all the same boring color/texture) that have quite literally been cut and pasted over and over again to create a dungeon. Best 7$ you ever spent?
Mounts are very unimaginative - again, just 1 horse model with different colors for each upgrade. The uberest horse is probably the gaudiest one of all (a "spirit horse" they call it - though it's basically just the same horse model with a faded out texture - like they were on a budget and couldn't create something special).
They recently came out with an expansion, Desert of Flames, but the expansion offers no new variety (it's all just recycled content with different names for the loots and spells). They raised the level cap from 50 to 60, but all the new spells are just the same as old ones they are supposed to upgrade, with a different name and slightly boosted damage, etc. Furthermore, in some cases the upgrade is so small as to leaving you wondering why you just spent weeks of your life leveling up at all.
Soloing is viable to a degree in this game. You can solo to 60. There are a couple of solo dungeons (or "solo rooms", more accurately) that offer no special reward or adventure. Once you reach 60 as a solo player you will find that there is nothing left for you to do. You only receive reward for killing an enemy if it is 10 levels below you or higher. In many cases something 10 levels below you that's intended for a group will beat you senseless. So you can forget soloing lower level group-intended enemies for loot. If you want to get ahead as a solo player, your only option is to buy loot from other players, but NO upgrade you can possibly get in the game will open up new soloing power and adventures (there's simply nothing to do solo but kill dumbed down enemies).
There is a bit more to do for groups and raids, but it's mostly just physically larger versions of soloable creatures that hit harder and have more hitpoints. Nothing really inspiring or creative. There aren't many uber items to go after, and much of the content is just recycled zone maps (same map with different opponents in it), recycled items (same graphic, different stats and name), etc. The game is inherently dumbed down, so there is little tactics or skill involved in killing anything in this game. There's not really anything you can do to improve your odds. Just "point, click, and pray" is pretty much the name of the game.
Crafting, I have to admit, was given more attention by the devs than most MMO's, but they ruined it with what could be the worst crafting system ever conceived. There is 0 automation, which would be fine if the system was interesting, but it's not. You have to sit there and click 1 or 2 buttons repeatedly while staring at a progress meter. Considering the sheer volume of things you need to make to level up your Artisan class, it begins to feel like a shameful waste of life after a while - just stare at a progress meter, click...repeat process 500 times.
The storyline is extremely pitted with potholes (too many to list). There is hardly a sense of immersion, considering the thrown-togetherness feel of the world (it feels more like an FPS multiplayer map than an immersive fantasy world, honestly). At times, when changes are made to the game that make it less fun, you begin to wonder whether the developers even play their own game.

What our customer's say!
"everquest ****", the had the game in stock and it was delivered very quickly..love the game...very happy
"EQ2 - Has changed and is Solo/casual friendly", EQ2 has undergone some major changes. If you like to solo or are a casual player this is the game for you. You can get to level 70 with any class solo. The developers have put in new solo quest lines that are really fun to play. The new broker system makes selling easy.
Frankly it was not that good when it came out but the changes have made for me the best MMO - I have tried WoW and hated it -- EQ1 gets old unless you are into raiding.
I think anyone looking for an MMO should definitely get this game -- especially if you want to solo or are a casual player.
"Everquest 2 is fun on all levels", I have played Everquest 2 since it's release and I just have to say, you must play it to believe it. The graphics and sound effects/music are just amazing. I invested in a high-end graphics card around for around $400.00 and have made every penny in enjoyment from this game out of that video card. You can adjust the graphics from low to extreme, depending on your video card, and usually you find a good balance between great graphics and fast game play. The graphics and worlds must be seen to be believed.
The development team is constantly changing the game up to keep the game evolving. The customizations you can make on your character are vast, as are the variety of classes you can play. Sony has made changes to make tradeskilling more basic and less confusing for some, so when you get tired from adventuring you can go make yourself or your friends some items such as food/drinks or armor/weapons.
The game is only as time consuming as you want to make it. Even if you play for only 5-10 hours a week you can still have enjoyment and advance your character at a good rate. They have released numerous expansions and dungeons that make the game continuously fun to explore and advance in.
I have played 2 other MMORPG's and this has blown them both away. The crowd is a mature, mid 20's type of players with very rare instances of immature players scattered among the zones (few compared to the other MMORPG's I've played), which is a nice change.
If your computer is capable of playing Everquest 2, I would definitely recommend getting the game and trying it for at least a month.
"READ BEFORE PURCHASE!", Do NOT purchase USED versions of this game! USED version's have USED Account key's and will NOT WORK!!!!!!
"Incredible MMORPG, what it's supposed to be!", I have read a lot of horrible reviews on this game, and I have read a lot of good reviews on the game. However, I disagree with most of them because somewhere in the text, they always put the game down for either it's grouping ideas or the way it's supposed to be played.
Let's be honest, there is NO MMORPG that doesn't require a group at some point in the game. In fact, all new style MMORPGS do require it to continue. In order to complete most quests in new style MMORPGS, you need a group! WoW, FFXI, etc.
As for Everquest, yes, you do need to group at some point in the game, but it all fits together. You're character is as needed as everyone elses. This is what makes this game more balanced than most. Every character shall have his/her place in the sun. Healers shall heal and mages shall cast, while fighters will fight and scouts will do their own thing. The truth is, every character is equal in this game. So, for a change, we don't have to wonder if our character is going to get a group or no, because it will. In other games, such as FFXI, we had to worry weather we would be able to get into a group or not at ALL TIMES. You could hardly be a summoner or anything of strange taste without having huge issues with getting a group.
Now, as for gameplay goes. The graphics are not top par, but the gameplay makes up for it. The animations in EQ2 are incredible. You will be surprised when you play this game, because every character is given enough special abilities to put anyone in awe. Again, every character will have his/her spot in the light.
If you enjoy MMORPGS, and I mean real ones, then you will honestly love EQ2, the patron of them all. If you enjoy PvP, you will enjoy EQ2 now, because they have two servers which offer PvP features. (Read up on EQ2 for more details) Remember, one of them offers Station Exchange, a new kind of bidding software available to those involved in EQ2 servers that allow Station Exchange.
Try it, at least. What will it hurt? If you feel that you wont enjoy it, download a demo and give it an attempt, or watch a movie or two from the official site. But trust me on this, you will not become bored with this game. There is always something to be doing and you are always counted!
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy...
"Patience is the only skill challenged!", This game seems nothing more than a better looking EQ1. There is still ridiculous camping of mobs and items. What skills are you challenging when all you do is stare at tree roots waiting for a rock to spawn, for up to 3 days, such in Feerrot? There is solo content, if you feel like grinding out exp for weeks on end. The solo content in this game seems like it was added after the fact, its lame at best. Two simple fixes: (1) eliminate ridiculous camping and make all spawns triggered (the serrated bone dirk and bone bladed claymore quests prove they can do it) and (2) add henchmen that can be hired, which will eliminate the finding a group problem we all have. They offer hired henchmen as a response in a questionnaire when you cancel your account, so it's something that crossed their desks. A lot of people say if you don't like this game, then quit. Well, I did quit and am suggesting to anyone out there, save yourself the aggravation and invest in WoW or Guild Wars.
"5 for potential, 4 for current status of game", This game was introduced to me through a friend. I had never played the first EQ, and so following my interest I downloaded the newly released Trial of the Isle Demo to see what I thought. The next week I purchased the game. Now, EQII by itself is not that great of a game. If you don't have any friends (like the kind you meet in real life) playing the game, it is my experience that the game becomes boring or uninteresting. I was lucky that I had some friends who already played and a guild to join once I started the Game Proper. I played for roughly six months and grew tired of the constant grind (killing things to level). So I cancelled my subscription and moved on. Four months ago I rejoined because, quite frankly, I missed my friends and I wanted to play an mmorpg where I could actually walk around rather than fly a ship. It is true that the higher you level the more group oriented the game becomes. However, with recent updates (and more to come I'm sure) changes have been made that if you wish to solo, you can and you will not receive as huge an xp punishment as before.
The best part of this game is the fact that it is constantly updated with better changes, in my opinion. If you have the money to purchase the Expansion and Adventure packs, do so as they make the game worth playing. If you don't then you'll be stuck with a so-so game. Also, manage your time with this game. I found it consuming massive amounts of my life before I took a break, and when I came back I was wiser and had a better idea of time management. If you purchase the game from the store, I believe you get the first month free, so that's plenty of time to make a judgement call as to whether or not this game is for you. That, and you can always download the free Trial Demo. I'm looking forward to the upcoming expansion, and the expansion of the world of Norrath overall.
"Lots of fun", This game is surprisingly complicated and intricate yet easy to play. I enjoy it immensely. I love the combination of warrior and magic of the characters.
"Best MMO so Far", I have been playing Everquest 2 since the second say after launch and I have to say it is the best MMO I have played so far. While it is definitely not for everyone I will give a brief rundown of some of its highlights over other games. In terms of graphics, diversity, and versatility of play it leads the pack, in my opinion. When it comes to the game's graphics I can say with confidence that it beats out all other MMO's that I have seen. The zones, outdoor and dungeon, are beautifully made and have great detail. The most obvious areas of detail are in characters and NPC's. You have almost total control over your character's appearance when you create them; everything from hair color to the size of the nose to the apparent age is entirely selectable. There is a great variety of races to choose from, sixteen in all, each of which is varied in size and proportions. All the equipment is also individualized to give a great variety of shapes and colors on almost everyone that runs by you. The monsters where not neglected with dozens and dozens of different monster types; from tiny flying fairies to towering giants that you have to look almost straight up upon in order to see anything but their boots. The diversity in this game is also simply amazing. As stated earlier there are sixteen playable races. Combine this with a choice of twenty-four adventuring jobs and nine crafting jobs you have literally HUNDREDS of combinations. The adventuring classes are exquisitely fleshed out with more than forty spells and/or abilities each. And for folks interested in the crafting side each of the nine crafting classes had hundreds upon hundreds of recipes to craft almost anything you can wear, carry, use, or sell to others. The world has amazing diversity as well with over fifty zones (last I counted anyways it was over well over fifty and climbing every major update). And if you enjoy questing, I will tell you that EverQUEST lives up to its name with over TWO THOUSAND quests at last count. This game will also please about any play style that you can enjoy. The developers have restocked the zones so that all types of players can find and kill monsters for their particular play style; from solo players to massive raids. The games monsters have been specifically balanced and the `consider' system reflexs that so that they are labled from solo, to group, and epic-2's, -3's, and -4's (for the size of raid that is recommended). Those that like to craft should be glad to hear that the crafting system is as in-depth as the adventuring. Every character can have both types of classes and both adventuring and crafting have fifty levels to travel through. So to finish off, this is one of the best MMO's out there. It may not be for the beginning players as it has a huge amount of content to absorb as you begin. But for the experienced gamer this game has enough content to keep you busy for months, if not years. And the developers keep adding content fast; faster than I can keep up with anyways. So have fun, and look me up on the Permafrost server.
"I want to dispell incorrect info", I have played EQ2. The voice acting is great and it is leaps and bounds above EQ1. I echo what a lot of positive reviews here have said. However, the main purpose of this "review" is to clear up incorrect information in a review by Matt J. Taylor indicating the following:
"No kill/loot stealing! I love this in everquest II once you attack a monster that monster is locked with you. A little lock appears at the top indicating to other players that kill is all yours and other players cannot barge in and kill the monster ( steal your kill and your experience and loot from that monster) This was a big problem in Everquest that fustrated me as a player a lot of people were inconsiderate and stole my experience points ! This is probally one of the biggest reasons why I prefer this game over World of Warcraft, in World of Wacraft no such system like this is in place other players can steal your kill, I speak from my own personal experience."
In regards to the World of Warcraft portion: This is absolutely positively NOT TRUE. WoW has the same system as EQ2. It is called "tagging". Once you attack something IT IS YOURS AND YOURS ALONE just like in EQ2. If another person comes up and starts attacking the same thing as you they will NOT get your experience points and they CANNOT loot the corpse and take the stuff rightfully belonging to you. The only result is they helped you get your kill faster with no gain for them. I have been playing WoW since Beta and I don't know what version of the game Mr. Taylor played because it has always been that way.
I wanted to clear that up for those who might be looking for an MMO to play and are weighing the pros and cons of each.
WoW and EQ2 are both good games, but are very different from one another. Most MMOs offer free trials these days so I would highly suggest trying out a few to see what you like best. (And a few others out there too!)
Have a good one and best of luck finding the right game for you!
