Others say...
"Great for video editing, too bad no DVD authoring" I wish this software work like it should!!! The software is quite intuitive and I spent ~ 2 hours learning it and was able to consequently create two 1.5 hr long videos completed with open/close title sequences, scene transitions, voice, music tracks, video overlay and filtering. It's great for that purpose, although some of the preview feature is somewhat quirky, and it demands some quite odd restrictions during editing process like forcing the deletion of transitions between clips if the one of the clip is to be splitted into two sectoins, but all of the editing feature worked as advertised. Now comes to time to bring the video onto the DVD, that where it all went down the tube. First DVD was created fairly eventlessly despite a very long video conversion sequence (I think it ran as long as the video's full run length) eventhough majority of the footage was already in DVD mpeg-2 format to start with. But the DVD created consistent skips and hicups in changing chapter, locking up the players, etc. I tried the DVD disk on several players as well on three computers with DVD-ROMs, all of them skipped on the playback and locks up when switching chapters on the disk. I have also tried 3 times to create a second disk with a bit more added effects and sound tracks the DVD disk creation process had consistently failed during video conversion step, even when I try to creat an ISO DVD image the software just could not finish converting the video and crashes every time with 99% converstion completed!!! EVERYTIME with 99% completion. I like the video editing function of this software quite a lot, but without the ability to author the completed video onto a DVD disk, the software really is quite useless. I have updated the software with the latest patches and have more than enough computer resources for the job, but the buggy DVD creation module is causing tremendous amout of frustration. Updated audio synchronization problems: If your video is longer than a couple of minutes, this software will definitely have trouble syncing the audio to the video sequence. I have tried this for many projects, unless you split a video into many, many, many projects, you will be faced with audio out of sync problems. It's so bad, after 30 minutes, the audio lag will be as much as 10-20 seconds. This is absolutely unacceptable. The software has decent editing features, but horrible audio sync.
"Great Video Editor" I have tried a couple editors ( like Sony Screenblast 3 ) and have found Ulead to be the best, easiest, and puts out very nice DVDs. I would advice anyone that is to buy this to get the updates ( as with anything, always update it to the latest ). The software is very stable and has a lot of powerfull tools. I have yet to have it lock-up or crash on me. Give Ulead VideoStudio 8 a try, you'll be glad you did.
"Consistently froze on Windows98 SE Pentium III" Most video editors require Windows XP, so I was interested in Video Studio 8, which is advertised as running on Windows98 SE. That is what I have on my VECTRA VL400 MT machine (933 MHz Pentium III). Alas, VideoStudio 8 crashed the first time it ran, and consistently froze when I tried to play any video clip.
Technical support was responsive via e-mail, but was not able to fix the problem. Reinstallation attempts did not help either. Going well beyond the call of duty, I reconfigured the hardware and restored all the machine's software to its original pristine "as delivered" state, and VideoStudio 8 still crashed and froze as before.
My recommendation is that for any video editing software, first download a trial version and see if it is compatible with your system. E.g., Pinnacle's Video Studio 9 Plus trial version seems to work fine on my system.
I returned VideoStudio 8 to Amazon, whose simple return procedure impressed me enough that I've already ordered Pinnacle's product from Amazon.
"VideoStudio 8 may not work for you" I found VideoStudio 8 worked pretty well for editing movies, but it failed miserably when burning DVDs, and was not without problems in loading video from a digital camcorder. Apparently it can make DVDs, but not good ones, or not on my computer (which is a new one designed for audio/video). Apparently a lot of people have a wide variety of problems at this stage, and none of the suggested fixes on the ULEAD forum worked for me. Technical support suggested upgdating Windows, reinstalling software, downloading patches, etc, but none of this could get the jitter out off the resulting DVDs. I would guess there is a good chance VideoStudio may work for you, but then again you may be stuck with software that only does 90% of what you need.
"One of the best consumer video editor for the price!" I am very satisfied with VS8. I have tried many other video editors like My DVD, Roxio videowave, etc... This has many features that are not available or very limited in other editors in this price range. First and foremost, very stable.
Others have listed problems of burn errors, crashes, etc. I would suggest to make sure you install all of Ulead's VS8 updates and patches. Also DMA (direct memory access) must be enabled for your hard drive to avoid dropping frames. I also recommend enabling DMA for your DVD-RW drive also. What may also help to avoid burn errors is to disable Write-behind caching on the hard drive used for video capture. I am running Win XP sp2 with no problems. DVD media does make a difference. Check and use media compatible for your DVD-RW drive only.
VS8 is able to mix still pics with video that others cannot do with the exception of Windows movie maker. But that's where it ends. VS8 captures and burns to DVD. Video capture quality is the best I have seen besides My Sonic DVD. All editing tools and features are intuitive for me but reading (skimming) through the 180 pg. manual made my learning curve a lot easier. I like the overlay feature, I am able to add pic in pic, text effects with over 700 video and graphic effects. I especially like the time line depicting the separate audio line. I can tweak the audio with the rubber band option, to lower or raise the background music track, narration, or video track at any time interval. Easy to use video trim tools. DVD authoring OK, no motion menus like My Sonic DVD. But rendering is faster than other softwares.
I have just created a DVD video for our Church depicting the past year events. The response is an overwhelming success! They thought it was professionally done!

What our customer's say!
"Good For Basic Home Movies", This is a pretty good product for BASIC home video. However, in most cases Windows Movie Maker 2.1 is the way to go. Ulead VideoStudio 8 lacks in creative titles, credits, and can only be used for reasonably short movies without rapidly slowing down the process. The only way it can be used over Windows Movie Maker is that VideoStudio 8 can be used with Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and Real Player while Windows Movie Maker only accepts Windows Media.
"Out of Synch.", This product takes over the whole of the PC desktop and blocks access to any other program while it is running (which might be reasonable if the PC processor will only cope with one program at a time which is not the case with most up-to-date PC's) The authoring and burning program results in audio out of snych in every case with clips of any reasonable length, other than a few seconds. (A half-hour clip of captured video will, when authored or burnt result is audio so 'out' that it is unwatchable). This does not seem to be correctable. I would not recommend this product.
"videostudio", This program is bad. It has ok editing features but after i captured something and said stop capturing, the program did not let me capture more but only edit. Don't use this program. Period.
"bad product", well i have written several previous reviews, however i believe they were not posted because of my opinions on the creators blood-alchol level when this was dreamed up. However now im trying to make a very calm review. This product is not intuitive at all. Especially if you have previously used Apple iMovie. However there is a much better alternative to this, Power Director 3. I will not take the 30mins to write such a thorough trashing of this product but believe me, don't get this product.
"You can't beat it for the price", Does exactly what it's supposed to. Some complain of a steep learning curve - I watched their online tutorials before starting, and it was pretty easy. Captures sharp-looking video from my Sony MiniDV camcorder via IEEE1394. I can edit all my clips together, insert titles, voice-over track, scene transition effects and burn a DVD with menu, all just with mouse clicks. Hasn't crashed yet. My only complaint is that the controls for tweaking the audio levels on the main video track are very fiddly, and the user guide is a bit sparse on exactly how this aspect is supposed to work.
Read this reviews before You buy...
"Best Editing Program I've used", I've used Roxio's Videowave and Pinnacle's Editing program and neither can compare with the ease of Ulead Videostudio 8. I'm sure I could get a better system for more money, but for less than $100, I love the ease of creating the timeline and adding and editing audio. I did have the system crash on me once, but since I had saved not long before didn't lose much, and crashing once, in about 300 hours of editing time, isn't bad. I wish the title feature had more options, but other than that I think it's great.
"Awful product!", This product is extremely difficult to use. I have registered my product with Ulead and cannot access any type of help whatsoever. I have several problems with using the software namely sound/vision sync problems; menus/chapters do not save, rerender and you lose them and have to type them all in again. Input a video clip into the timeline and you have to manually alter every title, sound track, overlay after that point. White rolling credits on a plain black background (simple eh!) take forever to render. Can't enter cda or wma files into menus as background music. All very frustrating. What is more frustrating is that the video quality was very poor as I rendered several times as it doesn't say not to. I took the trouble of using Uleads tutorials on their open web pages. When the DVD came out picture quality extremely poor, and then when I improved Video Quality, the sound then suddenly became out of sync! Everytime I entered menus/chapters etc again, as they were lost and everytime was several hours inputting and rendering/burning DVD. Have also updated this software with latest releases. My computer is 2.8ghz/80gb/512mb and brand new and nothing else running! I have emailed Ulead customer support with very intricate details and they have been no help whatosever, I have 20+years computer experience professionally and privately. I can't even access registration page without going into a perpetual loop with it keep sending me a new password and then it sends me another and another!!! Extremely frustrating. On the face of it, product is excellent, but when you actually use it that is a different matter altogether, and then when you want help, again none whatsoever. I ask a question, does the product actually work satisfactorily and is there such a thing as techinical service from Ulead?
"save your money. get nero 6", I had such a hard time with this program. The price is more attractive than Nero 6 but ease of use is worth the 20 or so dollars difference. The interaction of the Ulead software is not intuitive at all, the DVD encoding is unreliable and takes too long.
"Has Promise", Overall I like Video Studio 8.0. It seems relatively stable and has some stunning visual and audio effects. It has two shortcomings that I see: 1) It does not allow you to save your overall DVD project (i.e. Chapters, backgrounds, music, etc.) and 2) Not the most responsive technical support. They never even wrote back when I asked them to address that issue. Otherwise it seems much more sophisticated than MyDVD 5.0, and more stable as well.
"Crashed, bugged, and no support", I've been a VideoStudio user since one of its earliest versions, and it has gotten worse as most technology got better. With version 6, I noticed an options button bug (Click it, and crash). Wrote Ulead for help... none. Thought version 7 would fix things. Same crash, same help. A glutton for punishment, I just purchased ver. 8 last month. Same crash, and same help. With version 6, 7, & 8 a click on any menu and the menu would pop out in 5 to 10 seconds. I remember that speed with my Commodore 64. Even pop-up descriptions either never surface (except for their frame), or also take 5 to 10 seconds to pop-up. Now with version 8, even starting the program takes a minute. That lady with the too big smile just stares at me for 30 seconds. My friends say, Hey dummy, maybe it's your hardware. Well, I'm on my third computer upgrade with every other program moving along with the faster processing speeds and newer technology. All except Ulead's VideoStudio. Look elsewhere for a video editor.
