"D Loomis is totally wrong..."
Ok, first off, the whole thing about putting thousands of hours into your character and if you mess up once your done forever is total bogus. You get FREE respecs at level 5, 20, and 40. So if you mess your character up at anytime before 40, it doesnt matter because you can fix it. By the time you hit 40 you have probably learned exactly how you want your character so the chances of messing him up between 40 and 50 are insanely small. And even if you do there are things called MINI-DINGS. These are where once you get halfway to the next level you get FREE specialization points to put on top of your current spec. Plus there are other ways where, no it won't cost THAT much to respec. You go on a dragon raid and get a respec stone. When you kill the dragon it drops FIFTY of these stones. Usually it takes a little more than 50 people to kill the dragon. So almost everyone on the raid gets a stone if they can afford it. And now with the new instance tasks you can make money in no time at all. I made 1000 gold in around 2 hours. Which is about how much money a respec stone costs. So if you've put in 1000s of hours into your character and arent going to spend 2 more to fix him, you got issues.

Number two, it is NOT hard at ALL for a begginer to use. The new classes are extremely powerful in both PvE and PvP. The Heretic, Vampiir, Bainshee, Warlock are all GREAT in PvP. Vampiir is probably the most powerful out of them all. But they all have strong points. The Warlock is a GREAT caster. The Heretic can heal, fight, cast, buff and is the most versatile cclass there is. And the whole thing about being able to INSTANTLY kill someone is untrue. THE ONLY way to one hit someone is either with Critical Shot with a scout or some kind of attack with an infiltrator/shadowblade/assasin. Jsut to let you know, crit shot takes about 7 seconds to use, and if your target is still in range, u can still see him, you havent unstealthed, and no one has hit you then u have a slim chance to one hit your target, providing he is some sort of pure caster. Only about 6 classes out of around 40-50 can be one-hitted. Loomis is wrong again....moron.

All in all i hope i have proved how insanely retarded Loomis is, and how great of a game this is, and don't let him discourage you from buying this title. BECAUSE IT ROCKS MY SOCKS!!

"excellent expansion"
I've been an avid daoc player for 3 years now. I have to say, TOA upset me alot. it bored me and irritated me that the only way I was able to kill people was using gear only accessible if you're willing to go through drearily drawn out quests. Catacombs is completey differant. with great new classes, massive graphics upgrade, new areas (including instance dungeons!) and access to materials to make crafted equiptment even better, this made me a very happy mythic customer.

"Dark Age of Camelot Catacombs Expansion Review"
This game is one of the best MMORPG's i've ever played (and that's saying something). Great graphics, instanced dungeons for training customized to your level and class. Customizable faces, hundreds of weapons, the list goes on and on. I would recommend this game to anyone interested in MMORPG's.

"Piss Poor Loyalty Maintenance"
Don't get me wrong, DaoC is a great game and I have two accounts and 14 toons to attest to this fact. The good news, at least for those just entering the game, is that you'll have an easy time immersing yourself in the game, at all levels. The bad, for long-term gamers, is that Mythic has made all of those levels, Master Levels and achievements that took you months and months of work MUCH easier for noobs to achieve, without actually giving you anything in return (you DO get the nice title of "Elder" if you've player for four years or more). Given the ridiculously exaggerated prices for artifacts and scrolls achieved through Atlantis (now available for free download along with the basic DaoC software and Shrouded Isles expansion at Mythic's site), Mythic has made scroll drops vastly easier, and dramatically increased the cost of repairing artifacts (in addition to adding Epic Armor in Catacombs that comes close to approximating artifact quality, and which anyone can, and almost has to, get as part of general class quests).

It's genuinely sad that Mythic, rather than responding to its long time, loyal customer base, has chosen to pander the game to potential new subscribers. It wouldn't be such an issue if something were done to balance this, like giving long-time players some advantages in crafting (getting an LGM "has never been easier"), or benefits for toons leveled prior to the Task Dungeons of Catacombs (where "leveling has never been easier"). Sadly, this is not the case, and new subscribers continue to join, which is, in some ways, great news. What should concern them, however, is one day they'll be veterans, like the rest of us, and will find out first hand how deaf Mythic can be to that group.

"Mixed Review"
I have played DarkAges since the first day of the games release, across 2 servers and 2 realms (I have not played Albion).

The Catacombs Expansion will give a solo or casual player a much less stressful time levelling and earning decent PvE gear. The instanced hunting can make for relatively fast levelling compared to the old zones.
All in all, it is a good expansion if you like the PvE content of the game. Its not if you only play for PvP.

Regardless, if you are new to the genre or DarkAges in particular there are a few things you should know...
Levelling may be quick with the Catacombs expansion (if you are casual or solo and dont have friends to powerlevel you), but that is less than half the battle. That is the only selling point.

The real flaw in the game comes from the amount of time required to farm gear - very much of it with poor drop rates (soon to be increased, though spawn times will be made even longer which is just robbing peter to pay paul) and excessive camping by people (including guilds that will log in as a mob spawns and steal it). These items however are 100% necessary to the completion of a character. Some characters, such as the warden, are almost useless if they have not done the full run of MasterLevels and ToA farming. The time for this farming is very intense.

All in all, there is a Very Steep entry level for starters.

On top of that, there is a confusing and easy to mess up specialization system, where you spend your skill points. Respecs (rechoosing your skills) for these points are rarely handed out by Mythic (once per year or less), and the stones you need to use to retrain your skills go for insanely high prices that nobody but the most dedicated and equipped players can afford. In a recent statement Mythic said they were happy with this system.
This means once you create a character it will have to stay like that. Once you have put in the time to level, gear out, masterlevel, and then begin the realmpoint treadmill - you will have put in hundreds upon hundreds of hours. If you made a mistake or found you do not like your specialization, or found it to be in poor demand, or would just like a change - you will be stuck with it for good.

The game is plagued with a poor interface, strict class selection for PvP (many classes are unwelcome), finicky PvP (as the interrupt system attests to), and Extremely Fast paced PvP. Literally there are classes that can kill you instantly, and there is almost no give and take in a battle.
The hallmark of the game is PvP, but the pace of it makes it very difficult to enjoy. It is faster than most FPS games. If you do not have a planned organized competitive group you will just be farmed & frustrated.

So in the end, even though I play it to this day, I have a powerful guild and support network to make levelling or getting gear tolerable, and PvP a success instead of being repeatedly killed over and over. Guilds like mine however, do not invite newcomers or people who play less than 6 hours per day.

I cannot, and do not, recommend this title for a beginner or a newcomer.
If you are a veteran DarkAges fan, you may enjoy the solo exp of Catacombs, or the change in appearances (though SI is still the superior PvP engine if you do not depend on healers helper, etc).

Rates are now increased to the same price as Warcraft, EQ2, etc. The President now only promises to support the game as long as the community does, and such a non-committal message does not bode well for the future.

I hope this review was helpful.

What our customer's say!

"Its FREE from Camelotherald.com", This is my favorite game, Dark Age of Camelot. I have played since just after the game went public, (going on 7 years now) and there have been many upgrades and expansions. The first 4 parts of the game, including base and 3 expansions, are now free download. (including Catacombs so dont buy this one) Find these at [...]

You will want to purchase the two newest expansions, Darkness Rising and Labyrinth of the Minataur. I cant think of anywhere better to buy these 2 expansions than amazon.com, so purchase them here. I play daily for over 6 hours per day and have yet to become bored.

With 10 character slots you can create and develop a number of classes and switch round at your discretion. With 3 realms from which to choose, and multiple servers you could potentially create every class in all 3 realms, over the different servers all on one account. This is NOT a cartooney little kid game folks, this one is for the 'big kids' from age 9 through 90. (no kidding, since Im 64 myself!)

A whole new starter zone (including a lovely voiceover at the start) has been developed and added into this game, giving new players a nice big starting field including quests and monsters to kill, plus decent armor to earn (since game money isnt included with your char) This new zone allows character development without excessive exposure to all the high levels that are out there.

There are new things added to the game on a regular basis by the makers, at no additional cost. Roughly every 6 months the creators of the game put in a whole new high level quest line that is exciting and innovative. The monthly charge I find to be quite reasonable for the hours and hours of pleasure it gives, great bang for the buck! I have met hundreds of people from around the world ingame.

Fighting styles require quick reflexes once you decide to play against enemy realms. There are hunting zones for all levels, even very new characters can enter a battleground zone to experience realm vs realm. Not an easy feat, with 2 realms against you, no matter which of the 3 you decide to become!

The game is based on real history and locations, but is all fantasy as well. Albion is old England Scotland Wales right after King Arthur died. Hibernia is Ireland, with Celtic origins and much more. Midgard is Finland and northern euro background. A blend of real sights and imaginary ones, along with real history and fantasy make for a seamless bit of sheer entertainment!

"Best MMORPG overhaul I have witnessed", I purchased the DAoC Platinum Edition a few years ago and while I was very happy with the game and the guild I was involved in (I played the Galahad Hibernia server), I was not that impressed with the backdated graphics. Fortunately, the story and gameplay kept me interested, and my guild got me into the Realm-vs-Realm aspect of the game (the absolute BEST part of DAoC; if you haven't tried it yet, download the RvR New Frontier, already!!!) and using Teamspeak, I was able to talk to real people while playing this game. The people who play this particular MMORPG are very helpful and courteous, and if you need money, help in quests, ressurection, etc. they will always be glad to lend a hand!

...Needless to say, when Catacombs came out, I was very anxious to get it, but was even more surprised to see the incredible graphics overhaul that occurred as a result of it. My character looked SO much better (she actually looked feminine and graceful), the monsters actually looked like--well, monsters, and two new Hibernian classes (vampiir and bainshee) were a lot of fun to play (I ended up playing a vampiir; they are great for Realm-vs-Realm, depending on how you spec them, and you can solo them easily). The other great thing about Catacombs was the Task Dungeons and Instance Dungeons--a GREAT way to level your character up quickly, depending on the type of character you have (I was able to solo in the Task Dungeons with my vampiir and get her up to level 48 within a few days).

...Catacombs was a great expansion--one of the best overhauls I have ever witnessed. Thumbs up, Mythic! :-)

"Catacombs makes DAoC a new game", I played DAoC when it first came out but quit after about six months. Now ~2 years later, I reopend my account and upgraded to the Catacombs expansion. OMG! I am having so much fun. If you are thinking of comming back to DAoC you MUST get this expansion. Leveling is faster, instant tasks/dungons, traveling is easer...basicly a lot of the time/money sinks have been removed. So much content has been added it may take a year to see it all. Oh, the upgraded graphics are just fantastic!

"This game ROCKS!!", Excellent gaming experience. The game is very robust with many different types of activities to become involved with.

"DAoC Catacombs", Catacombs basically renders all the old zones useless. Why waste time in them when you can level up twice as fast running the insta dungeons. The new Catacombs areas themselves are pretty boring and ill conceived. Pretty stupid release imo but at least it makes the grind to 50 alot easier.

"Both Highlighting and Degrading the Beauty of the Realms", Envrionmentally, the graphical upgrade Catacombs offers is fantastic, and the new classes are welcome. The new character models, for the most part, are a graphical improvement without any change in style. However, the character models of the Avalonians and Elves, while graphically superior to their predecessors, have undergone a drastic change in style. Gone are the lithe and eerily ethereal Elves of the Dark Age of Camelot I used to know, replaced by the standard long-eared, tanned, shapely, bulky Elves similar to the EverQuest franchise. Gone are the delicately studious Avalonians, suffering the same new affliction of weight gain that the unfortunate Elves have. It is truly a travesty.

Mysteriously, the other races are, apparently, stylistically unchanged.

Character creation itself is a disappointment, with extremely limited flesh tones, hair colours, and hair styles (about four for each race/gender). If Mythic's reasoning for this is a matter of resources, I would have recommended waiting a year or more to do this well, rather than releasing such a minor improvement in appearance customisation with such a major change in the aesthetic style of the Avalonians and Elves.

"Solid expansion that makes game more fun", Catacombs is a great addition to the mature MMORPG, Dark Age of Camelot. In addition to the new graphics, which puts DAoC on par with all but the most resource-hogging MMOs out there, Catacombs significantly cuts the leveling grind that DAoC has been known for in the past. Catacombs features generous mob drobs, adds mini quests that can be completed in a few minutes for mucho experience, and it adds instanced dungeons where solo players or small groups can hunt. Catacombs makes soloing for casual gamers much easier than in the past. All in all, a big improvement to the game.

"This expansion is a slick-looking lifeline to new players!", After playing this for a few weeks, I want to thank Mythic for a job well done.

The graphics are now even better, but my older 1.6 ghz athlon system with 512 RAM is now having trouble at times, even with a newer 128 vid card. This is not Mythic's fault. Rather than make us all abandon our powerful characters, their gear, and years of memories in order to experience a new game with sharper graphics and more developed quests, etc. (like Sony's Everquest), Mythic simply improves the existent game.

The quests that come in these new subterranean zones are plentiful and INTERESTING-- not just go out and gank mob X (tho that remains a staple of many). These zones are real eye candy.

Most importantly, the instanced dungeons and quests mean that once you log on, you can be grinding XP and getting loot in a couple minutes, and are not dependent on waiting around to cobble a group together if you do not have a long play session. I am a parent of a toddler, and I appreciate the chance to do something fun with an MMORPG when I can't commit to 2+ hours.

In fact, I was so impressed by how this expansion, coupled with Mythic's new autoleveling mechanic (kinda like "matching funds" for leveling), means someone COMPLETELY NEW to the game can jump right in and get their toon up fast. The previous reviewer is right. I successfully introduced two of my friends into the game for the first time and they are having a blast.

For people who have a full slate of level 50s on each server, this may not offer much, but for those of us who do not, and want to level up alts it's killer.

"A good expansion for a fun game", This is the best expansion they've made for camelot so far. Very graphically intense so older systems may have some trouble.

"Facts instead of bashing?", I Beta'd Catacombs, after wearying of the 'grind' DAOC had become. What a welcome surprise. Much like WOW - a dedicated player can reach 50 (and the endgame) within two weeks using Catacombs - and there IS an endgame to look forward too. Instancing is done very well. The graphics upgrade is good, but the age of the game does tell in older areas. This expansion is entirely dedicated to PVE (player vs enviroment) and Mythic has done a good job of it.
