"Would be excellent if only they had tested for bugs"
I have the same thing to say about this game as I do for all games by Troika: The creators demonstrate vision, style, originality, an in-depth understanding of what makes a game fun and satisfying, and so many bugs that it's nearly unplayable. In terms of bugs, this game is even worse than Arcanum, one of Troika's earlier efforts in the oh-so-fun yet oh-so-buggy department. By the time I had finished the game, I may have encountered upwards of fifty bugs.

Bugs aside, as soon as you start the game, it is clear that the folks at Troika understand exactly what the Vampire the Masquerade world was about. The style and mood is captured perfectly and I could not imagine a better adaptation of the roleplay into a video game. It is also the perfect execution of an action RPG.

The replay value is high, as your character can be one of many different types of vampires, each of which have different strengths and weaknesses, and different "disciplines" (special skills) to develop. Many obstacles can be overcome in a variety of different ways, depending on if you have concentrated on developing skills with brawl, guns, knives, persuasion, intimidation, hacking, lock-picking, stealth, etc. It's a very flexible game.

The graphics are nothing to write home about, in case you're the type to worry about that sort of thing. The music is a very entertaining mix which enhances the mood perfectly. There are also many fantastic comedic moments sprinkled throughout. The women of the game are all in ridiculously skimpy outfits, which is irritating enough, but I'm sure any gamer is used to that by now.

My overall verdict is that I must recommend it. Just be prepared for the onslaught of bugs.

"Love this game"
Any Vampire lover and lover of third person/first person action games with puzzles will love Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. This game combines puzzles with enemy slaughter. The best weapon is a severed arm. The graphics aren't the greatest, but the game runs smoothly (though sometimes the words don't keep up, maybe it is my sound card, who knows). I love this game. There are so many plot lines and quests to accomplish to make yourself in the world of the Camarilla.

"GREAT GAME"
i loved this game. it was amazing. i play this whenever i have a free moment. i'am a junior in high school and free time doesn't come to easily, but when i have a moment i'll play, there is something satisfying about being evil and a vampire. i always loved vampires so a game that you can play as one and is also tons of fun, is AMAZING!!!!!

"At this price....still a maybe!"
I'm really not sure if I can recommend this game for most players. I'll give you the facts and let you decide.

Let's start with the bad. This game wasn't finished when it released. It was pretty irresponsible to put out a game in this condition even if you're having corporate trouble. There are several quests I just couldn't finish because of game mechanic problems. One in particular is a quest where the characters get to the end of the dialog tree and just don't leave dialog mode. You are done. Go back to your save. There are other quest related bugs that forced me to re-install the whole game just to continue in the game. This was not a side quest either. It was the main quest! I ended up having to re-install twice just to finish the game. If it weren't for a great online community constantly updating unofficial patches for this game I would never have been able to finish at all. Also, if you are looking for a first-person shooter, skip this game. The gun-fu is pretty week in this one.

Now the good parts. This has all the makings of a fantastic RPG. The NPC characters are dynamic. The vampire clans are all fairly unique and make the game a new experience each time you play. The game world is open and full of things to quest on. Even with all the problems, I found this to be a truly great game experience. It is also a great representation of the first World of Darkness. That may be why I actually finished the game. Plus, from a horror stand point, there are some really good, creepy scenes in this game. If you make it to the ocean-side hotel or the back alley porn studio you will see what I mean.

That reminds me. This game is definitely not for the younger kids. If you want to keep the sex and violence from the kiddies. Skip this game!

So, what was all that about? You really have to decide if this game is worth your time. Even at the low price it may be more aggravation than it's worth. You should lose sanity because of what you see in the game, not because the game doesn't work.

"FUN Game.. BAD Glitches!"
This is a very entertaining game but it's filled with all sorts of annoying glitches. It got to the point where I just stopped caring to play because I knew from reading a few articles that once I got to a certain point in the game, I wouldn't be able to continue because of a really bad glitch. There are patches you can download online to fix some of the glitches but it doesn't help them all. It's sad because this game has potential and it's predecessor was very entertaining but I just can't get past all the issues with the glitches.

What our customer's say!

"Wicked awesome", Fantastic game, but these sellers are insane. Why would I pay $50 and up for a game that's been out since 2004 and can be found on Ebay?

"VTM great game, must get unofficial patch for bugs", When this game came out, I opted to follow the other major release of the day, Half-Life 2. I figured I'd come back to this game at a later time, and that time is now. Good thing, too, since all the bugs have been polished by a devoted fan following, you need to get the unofficial patches for this game to be able to savor it to its fullest. Search for them on the internet.

The game is great in atmosphere, the source engine of its day still provides a very nice offering of visual realism, nice colors, details, etc. The game itself provides an almost endless amount of role-playing choices, similar to the other great RPGs of the era.

Overall, I had a highly enjoyable experience playing this game.

"Yet another good..but not great game", Simple facts: this is a classic and great RPG game, this is worth buying and playing but DO get the latest official patch before playing and DO NOT use firearms.

Bugs aplenty in the retail version. Fair warning.

As far as the firearms go: I am all the way to hollywood and realized that the developers must have seriously hated gun use in this game and am about to restart the thing or quit because my cheap knife (skill lvl 2) does more damage to most things than my 300+ dollar handgun(skill level 6!!!) and forget about reloading while you fight with a shotgun...you better run forrest RUNNN....

Good game anyway. I am a nosferatu and some of the dialogue when ppl meet my guy is so funny I was laughing about it for a long time. Classic.

"Over $34 for a game that's almost 4 yrs. old?!", I don't ordinarily write a review like this but the price being charged for this game right now (May 2008) is absurd. Four months ago, it was $9.99 here at Amazon.

The game was a lot of fun and looked great for its time, and it offered better gameplay than many of the "whack-and-slash" melee games we've seen so many of over the years. And $34 would have been a fair price for it, say, 3 1/2 years ago.

But if you still want to buy this game, go to the bargain racks where software is sold and you can buy it easily for five bucks. It is certainly worth that, and, if Amazon still had it available for $9.99, it would be worth that, too, in new condition.

"fun game that turns boringly tedious", first off, yes, this game is the buggiest game I have ever played. it crashed about once an hour usually. SAVE OFTEN!

secondly. this game starts off incredibly. the first 3/4s of Bloodlines is addictive and ingenious. it made me nostalgic for 1995 when I first started playing Vampire: The Masquerade. the music and mood is perfect. the gameplay (while buggy as hell) is incredibly responsive and fun.

but the last part of the game is absolutely tedious and irritating. instead of coming up with creative, fun ways to solve quests like they did for most of the game, they decided that to make the end "hard" that they should just throw millions and millions of badguys at you. endlessly respawning, never-ending hordes of baddies. and if you didn't make a combat character, you're dead as fried chicken. there are no longer any ways to solve quests by talking them through or using different approaches. everyone has to deal with it the same way. combat. endless, intensive combat. which in my eyes did the entire game an utter disservice, as it was designed for multiple approaches to problem solving.

Vampire: Bloodlines was an excellent game with a potential for greatness. if only they hadn't taken the easy way out at the end.

"A Uniquely Mature, Smart and Entertaining Game", While you pretty much HAVE TO download the patch (1.02) on their website to play without too much trouble, this game is well worth the time and financial investments because there is simply no other game that offer an experience quite like this one. If you have read any modern vampire novels (such as those written by Ann Rice) and appreciate the imaginative possibility that vampires can be more than mindless bloodsuckers or the possibility of sophisticated vampire societies, then you would LOVE this game.

Don't let the art style fool you. This game is much more witty and colorful than an emo-boy's escape from reality. The dialogue writing and voice acting are great, and the richness of details in the environment is fantastic. You will get to explore the nightlife in downtown LA and Hollywood (just to name a few) like never before. What're you waiting for? Get it before this game is finally sold out.

"One of the best games I have played", Graphics are ok. But the depth of the game completely makes up for it. This is a FUN game!

"Engaging, Intelligent, and FUN", Without delving into the specifics of the game's plot or technical controls, I can safely say that this is one of the most well thought-out and executed "non-D&D" RPGs I've ever played. Here are some bulletpoints...

1) This game has some of the best voice acting I've ever heard in a video game, hands down. The voices match the characters' physical manifestations without exception. Inflection and emotion are spot-on. All I have to say is Smiling Jack. You'll know what I mean when you play.

2) While the plotline is decidedly quite linear, this game contains some of the coolest sub-quests I've encountered in an RPG. This adds lots of extra fun.

3) The music and graphics blend together seamlessly to create atmospheres ranging from downright melancholy and spooky to high-strung and intense.

4) Replayability is nice and high thanks to the many different Vampire Clans you have at your disposal, each with their own set of unique powers and subquests. Don't miss out on clans Tremere and Malkavian!

5) BIG NOTE HERE! While the packaged release of this game is indeed riddled with minor bugs, all of that can be simply and easily fixed by implementing Tessmage's TRUE patch (no longer available on his site, but still findable for those who are resourceful - you can Google it). Not only will the gameplay be enhanced, but much of the present but unimplemented content will be "awakened" to enhance gameplay without ruining balance.

"Decent game", Becoming a vampire, isn't that everybody's dream? Superhuman strength, heighten senses, and immortality are just some of the perks of embracing the vampire life. Unfortunately, not all of us have a vampire friend who can convert us, so we have to settle with role playing with Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines by Troika.

Bloodlines is set in Los Angeles where vampires live in secret under the rules of the Masquerade, which are a set of hard rules vampires follow to keep their existence a secret from all the humans. For example, the Masquerade dictates that if you want to feed, you better do it in a dark alley with no witnesses. In game, the Masquerade operates under a five strikes and you're out mentality, so you can't go around using your vampiric powers or drinking blood indiscriminately.

The game plays a bit like a first person Fallout where you are free to roam pockets of LA completing a variety of quests for a reward. At the outset, you choose from seven different races of vampires each with their own subset of vampire powers and abilities. The races are fairly standard fair, some specializing in vampire magic, others in combat and others in persuasion or sex appeal. Some of the races do stand out though; for example, the Nosferatu are so physically deformed that even being spotted by a human result in a Masquerade violation, so they must specialize in stealth and stick mainly to traveling through the sewers.

The quests have very good variety and are made even more interesting by the lore of the Masquerade and the politics that these vampires are steeped in. For example, *minor spoiler alert* you will be running through a haunted house avoiding flying furniture to retrieve an object for someone, or trying to clear out a strip joint so you can single out and kill a stripper who turns out to be a vampire hunter. The unfortunate side of this is that the game is built around a poorly executed combat system.

Combat in Bloodlines is tiring. First of all, the game strips away two of the most important reasons players enjoy combat: loot and experience. There isn't a rich economy of weapons in Bloodlines. There are a handful of guns to choose from and even less melee weapons. The only thing enemies drop, except for specific quest related enemies, are the weapons they are holding, so if you are running around shooting up security guards you will at best be breaking even with the bullets you put in them and the bullets that they are dropping. The big slight is the lack of experience gained from enemy encounters. This may be a slight boon to players who enjoy playing RPGs diplomatically; this sucks for the average player.

Another issue with the combat is the enemy AI. They are idiots and they are too similar. Either they are shooting at you, in which case you are ducking behind something and shooting them back, or they are lunging at you, where you back pedal and shoot them in the face. Either case, they are idiots. If you get two goons who are shooting at you and you line them up in a straight line, the one in the back will shoot the one in the front in the back. This is made even more irritating that they all are amazing shots.

Bloodlines takes advantage of the Source engine so the game feels a very Half Life like (more towards part one than part two) and also benefits from the Source engine's amazing ability to create life-like NPCs. All of the characters are very expressive and are treated with some amazing voice acting which helps suck you into the game's narrative. It is truly a shame that the game's combat drags the whole thing down and makes it feel like a chore to get to the juicy story.

Overall playing the game was a positive experience. At first, the game was very immersive, but as you become more aware of the game's shortcomings, the experience did tend to drag at the end. It was bad enough at the end that I decided to forgo playing the game again as another race and Goozexed it.

7/10

"Great game", I bougjt this game for my 17 yr. old son & it has been a very good game for his age, not for younger children.
