"Worked as advertised" The SBG900 Surfboard installed, configured and performed flawlessly. I am very satisfied with the unit.
"SBG900 Cable Modem/Router/Gateway" This unit has problems. I set security to High & I had major problems sending emails or changing between emails. Called Motorola twice. Tech's helped, but neither one had much knowledge about this unit. Wish I could remove whip antenna as I can not put on top of computer. I disabled wireless, so do not need antenna. Set up manual limited & no owners manual. I could not download the CD owners manual. So I downloaded it from Motorola website. Price varies on Amazon a lot. I ordered it after price increased to $117, then dropped again. SBG900 should be best Cable Modem/Router/Gateway available. Look for it < $110. If it screws up, best reboot & wait a day. Using Astound 6 Mb/1Mb for $30/month for a year. Tech was here 10/11/08. He could not troubleshoot slow cable problem. Obvious he had not taken A+ & N+ courses. Motorola should provide hard copies of their manuals.
"Motorola surfboard" This is a great product. Much simpler and more compact than seperate modum and router. For reasons completely unclear to me it isn't availible in any store I visited. Amazon is a great way to buy it,
"Wireless Motorola Cable Modem" Motorola SURFboard® Wireless Cable Modem Gateway (SBG900)
I love this item! Setup was hassle free. I will caution those who are not tech savvy to call your cable provider customer support and give them the MAC Address of the device before installing it.. this is especially necessary if you have a phone service like Vonage. Comcast has a special customer support phone option to setup a store bought device.
There was a small glitch with the Vonage service if you turn on the modem firewall. This was easily fixed by making a special entry in the DHCP Leases page in the modem setup (do this BEFORE!! you turn on the modem firewall)... just add the ID address of the voice terminal (usually a copy and paste) then tell it to BYPASS THE FIREWALL. I have contacted both Motorola and Vonage about this workaround and both companies now have it for tech support. They can tell you how to make the change if you have Vonage as a phone service.
Although, if you have a decent software firewall.. you don't need to activate the modem firewall.
I do suggest that you use the WPA Shared wireless access feature. its just a matter of choosing the option setting and password.
The other item... Choose a name for your wireless network, then turn off the name broadcast feature. This will prevent strangers from stealing your wireless access.
The two items in question were not a challenge for me, because I am familiar with this kind of hardware. Which is why I provided the basic information here.
"Great Product" I bought a Linksys WCG200 combo cable modem/router from BestBuy a year ago, stupidly ignoring the warnings about random disconnects. Well, all those negative reviews were right -- the thing disconnected an average of a dozen times a day, most often during long uploads and streaming-video downloads. In desperation, I purchased the Motorola SBG900 from Amazon (for a lot less money than the Linksys) and couldn't be happier.
I connected the SBG900, called in the MAC ID number to my Internet provider (Charter), and was using the new unit within 3 minutes. It has performed flawlessly since then, and I would unreservedly recommend this product to anyone who's had random-disconnect problems with other-brand routers.

What our customer's say!
"Easy setup, works great.", I needed a combination cable modem and wireless router and this Motorola unit was the best I found. I had no prior experience in setting up a "home network" - whatever that is - and the Motorola was very easy to setup and works great. No hassle - I recommend it.
"not compatible with xbox live gold", got it yesterday from amazon.
it didn't work right out of the box, but a couple calls to comcast tech support at got me going.
i set it up via wired connection to my vista laptop; then i unplugged the wire and tested the whole house: vista laptop, iMac, hp network printer, and iPhone are all connecting wirelessly. no problems except for xbox live.
to the best of my knowledge, it is not compatible with xbox live gold because you can't configure the NAT for uPNP.
out of the box you won't even get to xbox live silver until you type 192.168.100.1 into your browser and then under gateway/lan/DHCP config: change iMTU to 1500 (the default from Motorola is zero).
this is good enough for me so that i can download demos and game updates, but if you want xbox live gold then i think it requires a wired router to plug in between the SBG900 and the Xbox360? (i haven't comfirmed it but portforward.com says you need a static IP and the router would give you that without screwing up the rest of the home network:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Motorola/SBG900/Xbox_Live_360.htm
so overall it's a stable and fast cable modem!! but i am taking a star away because of the extreme geek headache it gave me while i spent a couple days trying to get my xbox to connect =(
"Works Fine - watch out for 2.4 Ghz phone interference", I've had this modem/wireless router for about a month - it was easy to set up - i did call the cable provder to give them the mac ID, then i just turned it on and let my computer search for it - easy. I did not use the enclosed software cd. In fact, I found it to be worthless.
I thought, for a few weeks, it was faulty because it seemed to cut out randomly. Then i figured out that whenever the 2.4 ghz wirelss phone received a call it would cut the connection from the router - i just nixed the phone (it only is a tool for phone spammers anyway!). Now it's pretty much flawless.
Bear that in mind, about the 2.4 ghz phone. You might have to make a work around to fix that. Perhaps some smart person out there has already figured out a way around this (other than chucking the phone).
Another note - this modem is really fast - at least compared to the crummy one i had before. My whole reason for getting a better modem/wireless router was for the Netflix/Xbox streaming movie watching application. It works very well for that - flawless playback of high def movies through netflix/x box. Great success! (Works very well with x box live also).
"Easy set-up. Range is average.", Set-up wasn't too bad, but I'm not too impressed with the range. I've had to add a range booster for a computer I have in the basement.
"So far so good!", Easy to set up and so far no issues whatsoever (knock on wood). So much nicer not having a cable modem plus a wireless router.

"Convenient all-in-one, but the DHCP server gets confused", I have a pretty diverse network, so I needed something that was not going to insist I toe the Windows line. This unit was easy to set up at first, and the speed was very good. I did have to wire my two Airport Express units because the alphabet soup of security options didn't jive. The trouble started when a PC or laptop would be awakened. It would occasionally get a complaint from the DHCP server that the requested IP was already taken. Then it would be stuck, not able to get an IP at all. This didn't make sense because I was using dynamic addressing for all devices. When I switched to static addressing, the problem seemed to go away. But I could not assign static addressing to the WinXP computer. I tried several times, and each time it looked like it switched to static, but later it would revert back to dynamic. I also could not use static addressing on the Airport Express units because they would not activate reliably. As others have said, you have to use the DHCP server whether you like it or not. I have not found any other highly rated all-in-one, so I may go back to modem+router, all Linksys.
"Perfect so far!!", I am using the modem and wireless router with a PS3, laptop and printer. I have had no problems so far. I'm saving money by not having to rent the cable company's modem and I get the wireless router to boot. I can gain access to the network from anywhere in the house and my PS3 has no lag time. Overall, I am glad that I purchased this item.
"Excellent unit but missing needed features - has limitations", To start out with I am a Comcast cable-Internet user and had a very bad or disappointing experience with a new Cisco-Linksys Wireless Cable Gateway unit over several months that constantly "froze-up" on data flow or at least disconnected and reconnected often. After calling Linksys and just getting the old "reset the unit message" (which does nothing to fix this problem) and then reading about how a number of others with this unit and Comcast were having THE SAME experience I was ready to get rid of my new Linksys unit and ordered this.
Once received I definitely liked the compact shape/size and appearance of the unit but getting this up and running was a many hours long task. At least in the Maryland region it was necessary (in spite of all the fancy software that did not finish the install) to CALL Comcast to register and initialize the new unit. Once that was done it was pretty easy (and I do not use the USB connect function, just LAN) to configure using their web interface in the unit for starters, but Motorola's FIREWALL options are VERY different and limited as compared to the Cisco unit. Also this unit has ONLY ONE LAN port for Ethernet so a hub or switch was also necessary. ALso if you need to use VOIP or similar Voice Phone over the Web like we do, the unit did not readily support that. After several hours work then it was ready but I had to use their "unprotected DMZ" function for the phone unit to connect. ALL in ALL a great unit and it is performing very well for WLAN and LAN to Cable Internet as I would want, but you may need a real techie around to both install this (right) and use any safety functions of the firewall, that does not support address based rule lists, only by protocol. Lots of hours but should be well worth it in the long run. Now what to do about that extra switch for the local non-wireless units that I don't want on wireless.
"It's so easy, I should have gotten one earlier.", I am so glad I found this item. I was going to buy a modem and router, then found this listed. Who needs two items, when one serves the same purpose. Plus I have limited space and this is the answer. Very pleased with connectivity and ease of installation.
"Excellant Modem/Router", The wireless router cable modem is excellent. You do have to call your cable provider and tell them that you are installing a new cable modem and give them your MAC ID number and ask them to syncronize it. They (the ISP) will be able to tell you if they can see the signal or not. I had a little trouble getting it to work with my Vonage phone service though, but after calling Motorola tech support, everything went very smooth. If you are using Vonage VIOP, you basically have to tell the SBG900's firewall to allow the Vonage system to work. Call Motorola tech support. They are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about VIOP issues. Above all, I am very pleased with this router. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it isn't a "N" band router, but even though it isn't, it still works awesome. Great buy!!
