Others say...

"Really not that bad."
I've read these reviews and some people love it and some people hate it. And I disagree with the person that uses it just to fool around with it, and said that anyone who would use this for a real life project is stupid. I have been using it for the past month in my spare time (which isn't very much with a 4 month old), I have used it to draw a plan to renovate the first floor of our house. Sure, some things are a pain, like having to block views of walls, floors, etc. to move a chair or table, but overall, I think that if you really want to draw up a plan, this program isn't that bad. I'm sure there are other programs out there that will do a better job, but for 80 bucks or whatever, you get what you pay for. If you really want to have a good program, plan on shelling out the 250-300 dollars for the better ones.

"Major Improvement!"
I found this software to be absolutely faultless. It does have the same drag around interfaces as before, which allows houses to be designed at lightning speed; only your menu choices are not put into two menu systems which allow more comprehensive choices. Once you figure out to click the top row as before, and then choose your comprehensive choice on the right, as not before, then you are off and running.

The programmers for this software are much better than the instruction book writers. For example, you can eliminate 98% of the problems with this product by "opening up" outside walls and then "closing" them again to make floors that have disappeared reappear, and to make walls that aren't attached all the way up to the cathedral ceilings, all of a sudden attach themselves.

The only drag around interface that seems to have been lost is that you can no longer resize windows in 3D mode by grabbing their edges, however, you can still click into them while in 3D mode and resize them, which is not quite as convenient as before. However, in return, you now have more options. You can now add skylights, curved walls, curved staircases and irregular windows.

The program has also been enhanced to allow true construction details. If you want a beveled footing and an actual buildable foundation set to various heights, you can now have it.

Furthermore, one of the most annoying features of the previous releases, which was having to set "invisible" walls to get staircase openings to appear in the second story floors (which always crashed the plans) has been revised and you can now simply draw in an opening into your floors.

The 3D walk through is an absolute joy to use with the product and you can zip your view height up and down and walk around and zoom in and out with perfect ease.

Having the ability to do true rendering, wherein the sun shines through the windows is my favorite new feature, as all good designs take into the account where the sun shines. For example, an awning over a south facing window will allow the sun to shine into the room in the winter when the sun is lower in the sky but block the sun in the summer when it is hot.

I don't much care if older plans cannot be imported, as I am busy on new plans with curved staircases and skylights which were not possible before.

Any roof can be made with this product. But you have to draw the roof on first, before you put in the interior partition walls, otherwise it will distort the automatic roof centerpoints, which are needed to change roof types which is annoying. But this is all due to their not well documented feature in which the roofs and floors automatically attach themselves to everything, which saves a lot of time. And you do have the option to draw your roofs "out in space" and then drag them into place to eliminate this automatic attachment feature. Therefore, just about any roof can be created, and easily at that.

I suspect that the people experiencing crashes do not have updated computers. It works perfectly on a Pentium 4 - 3.00 GHz with 512K RAM.

"Works basics okay but needs work to facillitate out the normal type of designs."
This software works great as long as your house isn't designed much different than standard box houses and doesn't have complicated roof shapes. I tried for two weeks to draw the correct roof on my house and have it draw in the right gable windows and finally gave up leaving a wide gaping side where a wall should be. It has an automerge capability for the roof for gables and hips that essentially made it impossible to draw my roof correctly because mine angles differently than they expect, apparently. Developing slopes in the landscape area is equally frustrating and largely a lot of trial and error. I finally got something close and gave up. You really have to spend a lot of time doing trial and error for most things (for example, it took me forever to figure out how to put two stacked windows (a regular window and a top transom type window) on the upper level of a two story wall. All in all, it did not work for what I wanted but I assume if I worked at it long enough and did enough forum support I might be able to get it to work but that is unknown. I also tried to build a deck plan with it and while it did the basic deck well, I needed to draw a two level stairs that starts down and then changes direction at the landling and could not get it to do that either. I eventually had to go to home depot and have them do it for me. For basic work, it seems like a good program but for anything out of the ordinary, it didn't work for me.

"Works well for me, but needs more development in some areas"
I really haven't had any of the technical problems mentioned in these reviews, and I've actually had a good experience with this version of 3DHA (I've used 2 & 3 in past years). At this point, I've used this new version for a large Victorian house that will be used for scaled dollhouse plans. I'm very pleased with the results. I particularly liked the plan trace feature, as my design was loosely based upon a historic floorplan.

There are, however, some negative aspects to the package. The manual, although textbook-thick, offers very little insight into the features of the program that aren't already obvious in the application itself. There were a couple of times I had to figure out tricks like putting small partial walls on a level "above" my main roof to get gable windows in the attic (that will make sense if you have the program and want to add gable windows). I was hoping to find tips and tricks like that, but the manual is basically just a brief description of every option on every menu in the program. Add a lack of any extra information online, and you really have to be pretty intuitive with software to pick it up.

My major disappointment is related to the walkthrough mode and "3DTrueView" rendering. The basic walkthrough is functional but doesn't look much improved from old versions. I had the impression before purchasing the software that the walkthrough itself was in "3DTrueView," but this is not the case. Instead, you have to select a scene from the walkthrough to render, and it takes quite a while to do it at the highest quality. When it's finally done, the rendering is just not that impressive. It's nice to see where shadows fall and such, but I was hoping for a little more photo-realism. With all of the near photo-realistic 3D gaming engines available now, you'd think they could incorporate something similar into an application like this in its sixth major release. I'd really like to have the option to walk around the design on the floors rather than flying around through walls, and it would be nice to have the ability to do it in the fully rendered version.

Still, I give it four stars (probably more like 3.5, really), because it's definitely functional. I feel like it lives up to the majority of its promises and gets the job done, even though I feel like it could have become so much more.

"Not for apartment owners and also time consuming"
I am renovating my apartment and wanted to put together some quick layouts, move some furniture and walls around, and so on. Not possible with this software. No apartment feature at all. When I returned it, I was told that apartments were not homes, which was very distressing to me as mine just cost me a fortune. They wouldn't take it back at all, as it's their policy (Comp USA) which while totally rational (instal-and-return) created a intensely irrational hatred for both Comp USA for not standing behind their products, and the software makers for suggesting that my ridiculously expensive co-op is not a home.

Smart Draw Floorplan is a basic product that does layouts. No 3D and not perfect, but very simple and comprehensive.

Hate Comp USA and hate the fact that I wasted the time trying to return it. Vow to no longer spend any more of my irrational money at their store. (Yes I should have bought it at amazon, but I just had to touch the box--go figure). And am also considering selling my non-home for a shoebox.

What our customer's say!

"3D Home Architect", Have just purchased Bronderbund 3D Home Architect. There is a lot of good things on it, but several things that are wrong. Firstly it was not possible to register. Also they no longer supply email or technical support for it on their website. Certaiin things are missing, for instance part of the staircase dialogue is missing. There is not the setting for stringer waste. Also when in the properties page of any item, if you click on appearance the program crashes. it is ok as a toy for messing around on but without support I would not buy it for serious work. There may be a forum around where one can get solutions to problems.

"General Overview", I completely agree with "Gary Tool Geek" who wrote the review about the program getting corrupted. It took a couple of tries till I realized what was happening. As I added items to the house plan it became harder and harder to work without crashing and finally I could not add walls at all. Turns out that the file gets "corrupted". So I now save files to new file names as I go along. Why doesn't Broderbund explain "corrupting" files??? By the way, they no longer support the software.
This progam takes hours to design a house - 50+ hours. It's not something you can do quickly.
It also takes a lot of study. I have not yet learned to use the 3D viewers because I have been concentrating on building the house using the 2D view.
I earned that the width and depth functions of the lot layout are not as I would define it, so be careful when you define your lot size (I now do it at the beginning).
I have made 6 designs just learning how this program works. I am starting on the design again and hopefully I will not discover another fault that will stop me from completing one design.

"Cheap & Easy, Sort of...", I bought this program, honestly, because it was the cheapest one I could find. So I can't complain much - you get what you pay for as they say. The program crashed on me many a time, but if I saved regularly it wasnt really that bad. I live in Alaska and many things that I would look for to build a house here were not included. Also, I have this dream of having a fabulous bathroom. The interior decorating parts of this program didnt include many types of bathtubs and such. All in all, I enjoy making homes in the Sims 2 much more for that reason. However, as far as designing the floor plan, not too bad. Easy to figure out, and fun!

"Broderbund 3D home Architect 6", This appeared to a promsing product which I intended for rough designs of a house. However, my experience is that is poorly suited for this task and I would not recommend it.

"Good but not excellent", I have tested a lot of programs for house design, and this one is one of the easiest to use, it is remarkable that there a lot of functions missing like copy and paste objects in the usual way , but it have the duplicate option (what im talking here is that some standarization is missing) you canot change the attributes of multiple objects, so you need to change the color of every single piece of wall one by one.

Apart from theese little interface details, the resulting images in 3d are very nice and realistic, the product is discontinued by the company which is now selling all the components separately, so there must be a limmited quantity of copies of this package remaining.

To end my review let me say that between all the programs i tested i decided to buy this one and im happy with my choice

Read this reviews before You buy...

"really zero stars DO NOT BUY", Purchased this software and it will not run on my system. I have attemped all the fixes that manufacture has on how to configure your computer system. The only thing that I can think of is that I am running on an AMD Chip vice Intel. Brouderbund does not have any type of available customer service other than what is accessable on the web (or I could not find any other type of help). Be very sure that your system fits what the program requires. Even then you still may have problems getting this program to work.

"Only got HALF the program", Another reviewer mentioned the call-in deal from late last year: Posted Nov 4/04 - Currently 3D HA Design Suite is on sale for $49 by phone order direct from Broderbund! This includes Home Design Deluxe 6 and Landscape Design Special Edition.

Well. That's exactly what we bought. Or THOUGHT we bought. Oh, the book and the CD SAY it's the 3D Home Architect Design Suite Deluxe 6, and the manual CLAIMS that there should be a set of four tabs, Building, Interiors, Landscape and Terrain--but somebody has messed up. First of all, LANDSCAPE and TERRAIN ARE NOT THERE.

This was supposed to arrive Dec. 23rd before Christmas. It was a gift. It was two weeks late. It was supposed to have a Landscape Design Special Edition, but THAT is nowhere in site, and because it was late and the gift didn't get opened by the recipient until March, whatever "special offer" was included has expired so now we're only eligible for free shipping on our next (ha ha, LOL ROTFL) purchase from Broderbund!

We picked this product SPECIFICALLY because of the plant encyclopedia and the landscape/deck building/terrain feature. AND THE @$*! THING ISN'T EVEN THERE!!!! Broderbund already has an email from us. Doubt they'll respond with anything other than a form letter telling us to visit the website for "support". Do I dare spend money paying for a long-distance "support" call with an average 30-minute hold time?

I'm so disappointed. I drooled over this product in Best Buy for two years and was ecstatic when it went on sale for $49. I'm so glad I didn't plop down $129 for it (retail). So sad.

My advice? Keep looking.

"DO NOT BUY", I got this program as a Christmas gift last year and I read through the manual and I looked at the box. Brodurbund advertises it as having a great 3D engine. After installing it on two, not one, but two computers, I created a design, and tried to look at it in the 3D wizard. Both times the wizard was:
1. Slow
2. Undetailed
All this product is good for is the floorplans, which limit you to space. I was trying to create a large floorplan, and I could not because I was limited. I would not recommend this product to anyone. Stick with Better Homes And Gardens, which, after reading up on it, seems like an excellent product.

"Awful, Awful, Awful!", 3D Home Design is simply horrendous...no other gentle way to put it. One bumps into flaws everywhere one turns. This software really brought me back to the early Broderbund Apple IIe and PC/XT offerings...it's that primitive! First problem is the non-standard user interface that Broderbund insists on using that unnecessarily complicates the learning curve. Then there are the countless display glitches, the worst of which erratically redraws your work just when you are trying to make a crucial modification or measurement. Perhaps worst of all is the limited and error prone output, which makes it virtually impossible to produce a quality print approaching anything like that on the screen. I tried to use the export function to get my 2d plan into a "well behaved" format, but the resolution is so limited that the resultant jaggy image is next to useless. Whereas the program itself properly uses vector graphics for most of the drawing (this makes the drawing appear nice and crisp no matter the zoom or maginification), apparently the output simply bitmaps the display, sort of like a crude screen copy function. Last, but not least, this program is virtually unsupported, especially if you bought this retail. The best that the makers can do is refer you to a chat room, in which multiple agonized users seem to confirm that most of the flaws have no easy remedy (or indeed no fix at all).
On the positive side, I found the 3D rendering capabilities quite useful, and the preparation of straightforward designs is relative simple. In addition, it's instructive to use the building materials catalog....it gives one a good idea of the possibilities for color and design.
However, I suspect that most users are like me in that they wish to produce a quality 2D plan that will pass muster for permits at the local building department. In this application, 3D Home Architect is certain to reduce users most to a sweaty, swearing lump.

"This is a really good program", Look, this is a really good product... now, if you're actually trying to use this product to actually build a REAL house in REAL LIFE, then you deserve all the troubles you get, and are frankly quite stupid. I just like this program because it's fun to mess around with... I really don't really think the people that made this software actually intended some REAL archatecture to be as dumb to try to use a product like this to make a REAL house... it's more for models and those kind of purposes... and I think it's funny because after reading a few reviews, it's the exact same users either:

A. Repeating exactly the same thing they had in a later review, just so people will be able to see it.

OR

B. The same people either just trying to constantly say how good or how bad the program is.

idk about you, but, it's sort of dumb... bottom line: If you have no intentions on actually building a real house, this is a great product for you to buy. This easily helped me out with building very good models of houses and whatnot... but I really can't stress enough that I honestly wouldn't reccomend you using this program for building a real house... like other people said, it automatically fixes walls and stuff (which is another reason I believe that this product was not 100% intended for real houses) and in real life, I don't think you could build a house as perfectly shaped as their idea is... but just thought you all might like to know that.
