"Best headphone I've ever owned."
These are by far the the best headphones I've ever had. I'm a 19 year old budding audiophile and I've had lots of different headphones. From full size Koss to expensive Sony earbuds. These are ten times more useable than my Sennheiser HD-280s which says a lot, because the 280 have served me extremely well for more than three years. Well let me just describe how good these are. I have a surround sound system in my room, and I really like the way it sounds for movies and video games. But now I find myself connecting these headphones because I like the sound so much better. The sheer level of detail these things put out is amazing. I can hear background noise in voice recording in video games. You can actually hear someone cough in the background of one of the voice pieces in Mass Effect. And they are so much more comfortable than the 280s. The fact that the 595s are open and can breath is the biggest difference. You can wear these for hours and your ears won't get hot. And since they make no attempt to block out external noise like the 280s they don't clamp to your head which also makes a huge difference. Overall these are just amazing. And an absolute steal at under $200. I always find myself going for these instead of my $1000 Onkyo surround sound system.

"Wow!!!"
I am *stunned*... Much to my astonishment my iRiver T60 MP3 player drives the Sennheiser 595's directly (though not very loud)... but I can't believe how fantastic they sound even now! This is just amazing! I wish I'd done this a year ago. I can't wait to hear how they sound with a bit more oomph behind them (I'm building a CMoy headphone amp). Almost all of the artifacts I was hearing on the neck phones are completely gone (I suspect I wore them out by playing them too loud for too long - that's what a few decades of rock'n'roll will do to ya I suppose). The bass extension and soundstaging are like another world... Worth EVERY CENT!!!

At home I listen to CDs on a Harman Kardon HD970 -> Musical Fidelity X-Cans tube headphone amp -> Sennheiser HD600 phones, so I'm pretty picky when it comes to sound quality. Consequently I took a pretty dim view of lossy formats like MP3, and indeed when listening to the T60 or its predecessor on small phones the sound was o-kay but definitely nothing to get too excited about. I rip CDs at the maximum bit rate possible so maybe that makes some difference but I really have never heard it sound so good - the 595's have transformed the MP3 listening experience and I am HAPPY!!! Oh, also, they are very comfortable to wear :)

"Very, very good but..."
I like good sounding headphones although I wouldn't say I'm an audiophile. I enjoy music, I don't dissect it. I primarily listen to rock. These are excellent, easy to drive phones. And very comfortable.

Why 4 stars and not 5? The Senn 555s are almost as good (SQ and construction) and much cheaper. And, although it's not as well made or accurate (or comfortable), the $69.95 CR60 Grado's sometimes have a more fun, punchier sound.

If you want the best Senns, get the 650s. Chances are you'll buy these and then want the the 650s so why "waste" money on these now. The sound signature is a bit different (these are a bit more front row) but the 650s are better and plenty satisfying, even for rock. Only caveat --- one would need a headphone amp if using 650s with an IPOD. Get the 650s, a headphone amp (total bithead/airhead for $99.00 or something a bit better) and a SIK line-out. You won't believe how good music from an IPOD can sound.

"OK headphones - but just OK"
I bought these headphones primarily to use when on trips, to use with my iPod. So far though, I have only used them with my home system. I have probably listened to 35 - 40 albums, both directly from CD, and from 256KBS MP3 sources. My experience so far has been a bit disappointing.

Based on the reviews that I read here at Amazon, and my previous impressions from listening to music on headphones, I expected to be blown away. That just didn't happen. I have a modest system at home, comprised of a middle level Yamaha 7.1 receiver, a pair of $750 front speakers, a pair of $550 rear speakers, with two SVS 16-46 subs driven by an 1,100 WRMS power amp. The sound of this system has been generally pleasing.

I expected outstanding clarity, with solid mid and high response from the Senns, and with good to excellent bass, compared to my full system. What I have gotten is a somewhat compressed sound. Highs are not at all sparkling. Mids lack punch. Bass is compressed and very lacking in extension.

I guess that after spending > $180 on a set of headphones, I expected more.

"pretty good"
These are great headphones.
Only downside is, I use them for V-Drums and they start to "crack" and "pop" with low tones at moderate volume.

What our customer's say!

"Completely underwhelmed...", I was quite anxious to get my Sennheiser HD595 headphones in the mail today. So much praise has been written about them. Man, what a disappointment. These headphones sound veiled and lacking in bottom end. Boxy too. Just putting them on, the outside sounds are boxy sounding. Not a good sign.

I own a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones, which are sealed and a pair of Grado SR60's, which are open like the HD595's. The Grado's, for $69.00, blow these out of the water.

I put on a classical CD, since that is what most "audiophile headphones" seem to favor, and the music sounded fine. I then put on a Rush CD that's a personal favorite of mine and was shocked by how muffled it sounded.

Believe me, I like an accurate headphone. No boomy bass, no ultra cripsy highs to set my teeth to aching. But these HD595's are completely BORING to listen to. People keep saying how these sound like you're in the first row at a concert, versus several rows back like other, more expensive Sennheiser headphones. Well, if this is first row, that first row is 6 blocks from the stage.

Save your $200 for a nice pair of Grado's, you won't be disappointed.

"Very Impressed", I use these headphones for music and for watching movies and playing videogames. They are comfortable, light, come in a sturdy box and have a nifty little stand. I also own the BOSE Noise Cancelling $299 headphones, and while those are good for places where I dont want everyone to hear what I am listening to, the 595s produce much higher quality sound and they are $100 less! The other reviews influenced me greatly in my decision to buy these, read them and read them all - make sure these fit the kind of headphones you need, they are NOT the kind of headphones you want to buy if you are working in a place where others are withing 15 feet of you, they leak serious amounts of noise....

Either way, For my needs, they are perfect and if they meet yours, I assure you that you will not be at all disappointed.

"Good for the Ears", I like these headphones because it is possible to get excellent and satisfying audio without turning up the volume enough to aggravate my tinnitus.

"From a guy that love to listen music and see movies with heat phones...", I try sennheiser before and I never like any of them but, I have to said that those headphones from sennheiser are really good. I have for about 4 years a per of Grado SR60 and I like them a lot but, I was looking for a more comfortable headphones and those headphones will give you that. If I have to compare those two headphones I have to said both are very good choice just the sennheiser 595 are more comfortable. If you just love to hear music and see movies with headphones you will love this one. Like I said if you are looking for comfort and great sound those are the headphones to buy.

"AMAZING!", The best headset I have owned, though I am coming from the basic $20-40 headsets. Sounds even better with an amp!

"Wonderful", I love the sound of these headphones. I listen to various types of music - these headphones are clear, the low end is distinct and not boomy - the bass sounds 'blossom' forth in a space all their own without muddying up anything else.

Of course these are not headphones to block out the rest of the world - the design is open and you will hear extraneous sounds. That is the nature of the design.

For quality listening in a quiet environment, I'm not sure how much 'goodness' one could really gain by spending more money.

They are plenty loud on a iPOD without an amplifier - however I use them with a small headphone amp and they sound fantastic. As others have said, the adapter will place a strain on your headphone jack, so pick up one of the suggested extension cables so you don't have to plug the big adapter into your headphone jack.

"Excellent customer service", I actually have the HD580 headphone. But about a year and a half after ordering them from Amazon, the plastic headband part (that holds the thing together) broke. Mind you, I baby my headphones so it wasn't a result of abuse or anything like that. I realized these puppies had a 2 year warranty, so I shipped them back to S and after a week and a half, I had a good to go set waiting on my doorstep. So not only do they sound great, but you can bet you'll get top notch warranty service.

"Bang for your buck! (comfortable also)", I've had these headphones for over a year now and still adore them. I did quite a bit of research on this range of headphones and am still satisfied.

My only slight negative is the cord "could" present a problem if you were to stress it since it does not plug in to the actual headset. The cord is long and you have to be mindful of where it is if you use it at a desk with a wheeled chair.

Extremely comfortable for the size. The sound is amazing to me.

"Very, Very nice", Though I appreciate quality sound and a nice product, I don't think I can rightly consider myself an "audiophile." In fact, I feel like the term is a little bogus for the majority of the population who, in reality, probably can tell little difference between something mid grade and something a few steps higher. Then again, I'm no expert on the subject so I may be wrong.

What I can say though is that from the perspective of this average listener with a bit of experience with headphones (I've owned probably 7 pairs of ranging qualities), these Sennheiser HD-595s are very nice. I find the sound to be extremely well articulated, and there is no "boxy" feel that I got with my last pair of (closed) phones. I am actually quite surprised by how light they feel on my head considering the quality of the sound that reaches my ears. Though I have owned a number of different kinds of headphones as I mentioned above, I am still hearing new things in my music that I've never noticed before. I'm impressed.

Comparing this quality with the price makes these phones an easy choice as well. The next step up, the HD600s, are widely acclaimed but will require an amp to be properly run. The 595's run quite nicely without an amp and, from the perspective of this average listener, sound as good as I could ever need. I'm very glad I bought them.

"The B.E.S.T.", I've been looking everywhere for sound like this.
I went out on a limb and purchased them without having listened to them before but only because no one around me sold them.
I must say it was the greatest decision ever.
Gives true sound, front row-like reproduction, amazing.
These are audiophile headphones, so they're not going to produce banging bass naturally, unless you pair then with an amplifier. With an amp, you can make them sound pretty much however you want. And of course, they will still sound great.
You can hear everything. I mean everything. People in the background (like a jazz performance), deep breaths being taken by the singer, and absolutely nothing is muffled or overpowered.
There is no comparing the sound of these Sennheiser headphones. And especially at the price here at amazon.
I almost forgot that they are also extremely comfortable. Sennheiser, along with their sound, is always praised for their comfort. The earcups are encompassed with a screen like plastic cover and a chrome trim on the outside. The inside is lined with microfiber fleece which is very soft and comfortable and it also allows listening with glasses. The band of the headphones, which rests on the top of your head, is lined with a thick but soft leather pad. You will forget that you are wearing these headphones easily. They will not hurt after long periods of listening sessions, and they will not become hot and steamy inside the earcups because they have an open-ear design, which also means that whatever you are listening to will be easily heard by people around you. When you are blasting music through these cans, they could easily be mistaken as speakers in a headphone shape. Therefore, these are not at all for public use and i wouldn't recommend using them in a car unless you are alone.

Warning: The 1/4 to 1/8 mini plug adapter does cause strain on the connection between the adapters. With that being said, you might want to purchase another adapter, or just use an 1/8 mini plug extension cord so that the connection between the included adapter can lay on the floor or some flat surface.
Note: the strain is not at all tremendous but you want to avoid strange events if you can, although these headphones do have a 2 year warranty.

Use with the iPod: pretty good. Some people say not to use them with an iPod, but you will be fine. Especially with the newer iPods because their backs are curved which allows easy insertion of the plug.

Included: a little clip thing that can be placed on the edge of a shelf or a table and then you hang the headhones on it. Looks quite elegant actually. Even the clip is encompassed in leather for a "prestige" appearance.
The adapter.
And the box also can act as a storage container because it can be locked by means of sliding cardboard hooks.

Recommendations: As with all great cans, you do need to "break-in" these headphones. I recommend 30-60 hours. You will notice a tremendous difference from listening to it right out of the box. The drivers will become more fluid in their movement, and the response will be spectacular.
Also these headphones sound great by themselves, seriously. But...a speaker amplifier/headphone amp makes these bad boys shine.
Even a sound card on a comp. sounds great with these.

Please buy these headphones if you always seem to be unsatisfied with every headphone you try on. I cannot stress how great these are especially for the price. (Let's thank amazon for that. When I bought these Digital Media Source had the cheapest price for new).
