"My Take on the Sennheiser HD-555" Sennheiser 555 is the best sub-$100 full sized open headphone. I've had the HD-555 for about 6 months now, and here are my thoughts
Pros: = comfortable fit ---- circumaural, they cover your ears with plushy Velour material ---- glasses friendly ---- hours of comfort without much agitation
= Superior Sound Stage, spacious ---- sound stage will blow your mind. Separation of frequencies in instruments are precise and crisp ---- high dynamic frequency spectrum ---- ridiculous spacious; when listening, it feels as if you have two large speakers suspended next to your ears.
= Portable units friendly - works well with ipods and mp3 player, but portable amp is recommended.
= very musical ---- handles bass and low frequencies very well. ++++++++ deep rich bass with a tight punch ++++++++ bass is not over powering, doesn't muffle the treble ---- treble and mids really come out ++++++++ handles acoustic instruments and vocals like magic ---- cleans highs, crystal clear
= user replaceable parts ---- always nice to have
Cons: = no isolation or noise cancellation ---- these are open headphones, noise comes in, noise goes out ---- blast these cans in the library and you'll probably get some stares ---- blast these cans in the train or in traffic and your music will get muffled with the surroundings. ---- they are great when there is not sound around, but when there is, it is a deal breaker.
= not portable ---- long cord (10ft) ---- gets really sweaty in the summer ---- the 3.5mm/6.3mm adapter is really annoying with using it with portable mp3/cd players
= average build quality ---- nothing too fancy, just plastic here and there
HD-555 won't disappoint! for references, I own: HD-555, DT-880, HD-280, ER6i, SR-80
"Comfort, Sweet Sound, and ability to hear noises around you!" The comfort of these headphones is unrivaled in phones costing twice as much. They sound phenomonal as well. The bonus of not having wires dangling from around the phones is well worth the extra cost. Buy these headphones!
"Best headphone period for less than $100." I got these headphones from amazon over 1 year ago. Best headphone for the price. Do leave them connected to your amp with music playing for about 40-50 hours. But once these headphones are broken in you cannot campare these to any for comfort and sound. I have several headphones, I also have the Sennheiser 650 (approx $400) and the Sony MDR7506 ($100 from amazon) I got the Sony for my wife as she does not like the music to leak. She hates them, there is no bass, even when connected to a high power source. Sony are comfortable but just lack the listening enjoyment which a normal person expects with there everyday Jazz, rock and pop music. I like the Sen 650 (use it with a headphone amp) but when I listen side by side and switch between the 650 and 555, 650 sounds better just a little bit. I mean if 555 are 8.5 , 650 might be 9 or 9.3. So spending 300 dollars extra will not give you 4 times better sound. With the 650 you also need a amp to drive it. So to recap, BUY THE HD-555!! Why:- Comfortable Affordable Good build quality (Still good after over a year) Great Mid and highs Great Bass response without overpowering it. Don't need a headphone amp (Can use it with your Mini MP3 player)
Only one drawback, they are open design, so other people will be able to hear them too (But this can be advantageous as you are able to hear what is going around as well; telphone ring, baby is crying etc)
"No good for music with dynamic range" If your music is flat and has about the same volume from beginning to end, you MAY be able to live with these headphones.
I built a dynamic range expander and use DBX range expansion as well. The softest sound is 7 dB softer and the loudest sound is 8 dB louder using these expanders.
These Sennheisser HD-555 Audiophile headphones couldn't take it. They distorted badly and then clipped - the driver was locked at maximum travel.
Seriously, $40 Koss headphones out-perform these things. The Koss cans sound brighter and have no problem with the dynamic range.
Audiophile is not a proper description - try pile.
"It gets better than this??" Now I learn these 'phones are not even top of the line, and I don't care! They are incredible. I bought them somewhat whimsically after knowing Sennheiser to be reputable, but these far exceed my expectations. I will own nothing else.
They are comfortable, and they've been the best quality headphones I've heard for any music thus far, blowing my other $100 pairs I've had out of the water. Reproduce lows surprisingly well.
The only downside is that they make some mp3's unacceptable to listen to since it shows their flaws. Good for music in general I guess! Right now I'm listening to Galactic Live at Jazzfest and it's insane, my ears are absolutely flooded with sound and I can't even crank them up to the max.

What our customer's say!
"Buy Grado SR60 and save yourself $30", This one is overrated.
I own both SR60 and HD555. However, HD555 is somewhat disappointing. Sound is veiled when connected straight to a computer or mp3 player. For vocals, it sounds like someone is singing behind a curtain. It can even be difficult to understand the lyrics sometimes. When I connected this through an amplifier (one self made and one "bit head"), this goes away, and every word sounds clear and crispy. As a comparison SR60 doesn't care much whether amplified or not, and always performs very well.
So my point is: if you have to use this with an amplifier, why not buying something as good (or better) that doesn't require an amplifier? For similar sound quality (in my opinion, actually SR60 is slightly better), SR60 is at least $30 cheaper and doesn't need to be amplified, should be a much better deal if all you care is sound quality.
"excellent headphones", Sennheiser HD-555 Audiophile headphones satisfied all demands of a picky guy, like me. Its bass will bring a full deep spirit of whatever kind of music you listening. Overall, Senn HD-555 is a wonderful and good deal phone.
"Incredible its like real Audiophile", Bought this plus a Asus Xonar DX sound card then fired them up together and the first song I played was Salt Shaker by Ying Yang Twins and bass never sounded better. Was like those high end car audio even better actually.
This has got to be the lowest deepest bass I ever heard in my life. Plus mids and highs are awesome. This is worth every penny as Sennheiser rules.
This also plays Trance music great anyone who says these cannot play music are sadly mistaken. Please note do not run this on any Ipod or integrated pc audio you are just robbing yourself of what these headphones can really do. I recommend you get a proper sound card like Asus Xonar DX or D2X then you will really see the true quality.
"Excellent value!!!", Almost as good as the very good 595s. These are a real bargain. Easy to drive. IPOD friendly. Comfortable. Well made. Good SQ. Seem to be durable. Sound is not as laid back as 650s or many other Senns. Still, I wish it had just a bit more punch (I like rock).
"The price seemed expensive, but when I listened to them, that went out the window!", When I first started looking at headphones, I swore that I wouldn't spend this much, but I can truly say that I am glad I did. These are my first pair of Sennheiser's and they are worth every penny.
First, of course, is the sound quality. These are simply amazing. They provide the highs evenly, without making them sound twangy, or just over bearing. It is a good mix of soft and hard highs. The only thing I wish about the sound quality is the bass. I am a bass guy, and these provide quite a bit of bass, but just not quite enough for me. Then again, I am bass hungry, and these are bassy enough for me. They provide an excellent mix of highs and lows.
Second is the comfort level of these. I think my friend put it best. He put them on and he said "I feel like I am wearing a cloud on my head." They are lightweight and don't weigh your head down at all. Also the padding is phenomenal, and surprisingly not hot. I can wear these for hours and not have any sore spot or anything after the session is over.
I don't have any problems with these headphones at all. Just wish the bass was there a little more, but the mix of the highs and lows is very pleasant. I feel like I will now always stay with the Sennheiser name after these headphones.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Not worth the extra costs compared to PX-100", I had busted a pair of my PX-100s and was looking for a replacement. I thought I would spend a little extra and see what improvements I would get. After comparing them with another pair of PX-100s I was unable to notice big improvements that justified the $50-60 price increase. I highly recommend the PX-100. Minor factors in comparison were the lightweight portability and the comfort, in both areas I also preferred the PX-100. Kudos to Sennheiser for making great products.
"Yep, the best $100 I ever spend!", These headphones are amazing, and the price makes it a no-brainer. I now own two pairs (office+home), and use them for many different types of music. And they just perform! I wear them for hours and hours and almost forget they are there. And the music that comes out? Oh, my god.
So, believe all the rave reviews and just buy them! Niels
PS I also tried the 202 because of the great price. Don't. They are SO far from these, and gave me headaches because of the bad fit. So they are now collecting dust on a shelve in the garage.
"Best $100 i ever spent!", Wearing these headphones is a pleasure. They are the most comfortable cans i've ever used. They have a velvet liner that just feel great. Sounds is amazing. Get a pair!
"Nice headphones", Nice set of headphones for less then $100. I use them for watching TV through a Denon 5.1 receiver and the sound is very good. Seem to be very sensitive since I don't need to turn the sound up very high for adequate vol. Appear to be well made and are comfortable for movie lenght. I considered other brands but took a chance with these, based on good reviews, and I have not been disappointed. I considered wireless because I would prefer not having a cord but I have not been impressed with any I tried. They really can't reproduce surround sound but are very good for times when my wife doesn't want to listen to the program I'm watching.
"The closest you'll get to audiophile headphones for 100 dollars or less.", Almost everything that can be said about these headphones, has been said, so I'll keep this mostly to physical pros and cons
Pros: The most accurate sound you can get for 100 dollars. Not up to par with my Beyerdynamic DT880's, but at one third the cost, you are getting atleast 3/4th's the sound (if that makes sense) so they are an excellent bargain. These are easily the best headphones you can buy at 100 dollars.
The velour ear cups mean that the pressure applied to your head is very minimal, and these are indeed the second most comfortable headphones I've ever worn, next to the DT880's (I've had Grado's, AKG's, other Sennheisers etc) and the inclusion of a velour (I believe) head cushion means that the top of your head won't hurt even after hours of use.
These cans are also very easy to drive from a PC soundcard, and even on my integrated sound card, they'll go to ear splitting volumes if I am so inclined. I bought these specifically because my beyer's can't be driven by my computer, and I got sick of having to move my headphone amp between devices (Between Ipod, computer, etc).
The Bad:
An all plastic frame makes me think that one good drop might be the end of these headphones. The ear pieces are attached to a swivel joint (for comfort, which does help) but the joint is plastic as well, so it's not hard to imagine it popping off. I may just be worrying too much though, because I have a pair of all purpose koss headphones that are entirely plastic, and they've lasted atleast 10 years (though they sound terrible in comparison)
I said these were the second most comfortable headphones I've ever worn, and while that is true, there is one caveat; Even though they are comfortable, my ears are too large for the space provided (the velour sits around the ear, with your ear inside) so my ear presses against the outside of the ear pad. Not a huge deal, and not nearly as severe as with other headphones, but still an issue if you have big ears.
The biggest complaint I have is probably how much sound leaks in and out. I realize that these are open headphones, but even at low volumes, everything you are playing is easily heard by anyone in the same room (so these aren't good for dorm rooms, planes, trains, etc). I was expecting that, but I wasn't quite expecting how much sound is let in. My DT880's are also open, but they don't let nearly as much sound in or out as these Sennheiser cans. The sound of my computer fan is easily heard through the headphones if I don't up the volume a little louder than would otherwise be necessary (meaning others will hear it even more).
There is also a lack of bass with these cans. Others have said it is balanced, but I would almost go so far as to say it's a little bit diffused. Using equalization though, this problem is quickly fixed (if you see it as a problem).
One last con; These headphones come with a large (1/8th inch I believe) plug, with a very rigid 1/4th adaptor (the plug on your computer, compared to the plug on your stereo). This doesn't seem like a huge deal, but this type of adaptor is very prone to snapping and damaging your headphone cord. I'd suggest spending an extra 5 or so dollars and getting a flexible adaptor.
As with all headphones in the quasi-audiophile range (audiophiles will tell you that these cans aren't neutral enough to be audiophile quality. They are close enough at 100 dollars though) you first need to evaluate your own hearing before you spend any amount of money. I have friends that can't tell the difference between my 300 dollar Beyerdynamic headphones, and my old 30 dollar Koss headphones. If you don't have really sensitive ears, you are better off buying the cheaper Sennheisers and saving yourself some money (the 202's, the 212's, etc). I'd suggest going to a local audio store and trying these headphones side by side with a much cheaper pair, and seeing if you truly can tell the difference between the two (and then coming back to buy from Amazon, of course). Also, if you don't buy a whole lot of CD's, and most of your music is compressed MP3's you bought off the net, or songs from youtube/myspace/whatever, these headphones won't help you and they may actually make that type of music sound worse because they will expose flaws in the recording that you wouldn't have been able to hear otherwise.
In conclusion, these are the best headphones you can buy at 100 dollars, and unless you need complete isolation (if you do, I suggest the HD-280's for the same price), or you really love bass, or you have really big ears, these headphones are exactly what you are looking for.
