Others say...
"Cheap Gamecard Alert!" Buying this gamecard saves you nearly four dollars a month off the regular full price for City of Heroes & Villains. At first, I was a bit skeptical that these cards weren't going to work, but I've used mine and was credited for a full sixty days. I've checked around, and even with buying a year's subscription via ncsoft's website, this is still the cheapest way to go. There's no telling how long amazon.com is going to offer these cards, so stock up on 'em now!
"Get the City of Heroes Subscription Card, It's Cheaper" Amazon has the City of Heroes branded game card currently listed at $28.69, as opposed to the full $29.99 list price that this CoV card is at the time I am writing this review. (Alas, the card used to be $21.48, but they raised the price.) Either card can be used with City of Heroes, City of Villains, or both at once; the only difference is the picture on the box and card.
"Decent way to play City of Heroes or City of Villains" It used to be that Amazon was selling this card for considerably cheaper than it is now. Alas, they have brought their price back into line with the cost of the game overall, and I am kicking myself for not ordering more such cards when they were bonus-priced. Perhaps sooner or later it will fall again. You can enter as many game cards as you like into the system at any time and they will each add two months onto the end; you do not need to wait for your account to expire before using it.
Note that though the game card's box has the City of Heroes logo on it, it can also be used for City of Villains stand-alone, or apparently any other NCSoft Game such as Lineage II or Auto Assault. I'm not sure why Amazon is offering the City of Villains branded gamecard at full list price but this one so much cheaper; the only difference is the logo on the box.
"A bargain..." First off, to refute some of the "bad" reviews listed here, City of Heroes and it's companion game, City of Villains, are both Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games. In order for these types of games to survive and expand, they require a monthly subscription fee. That being said, this 60 day time card will apply to BOTH City of Heroes AND City of Villains. If you own both products, one subscription fee is charged each month (no increase, as it's the same servers they're played on). The "normal" fee is $15 a month, so at the lowered price of these cards, you're paying a good amount less per month. CoH and CoV get very regular FREE updates, unlike most games out there which require you to purchase another $30-40 expansion to get access to new areas and the like.
I highly recommend that any long term player order your cards from here.
"Get 'Em When They're Cheap" These are the reasons I would recommend buying the time card: + Great gift for someone who plays + Doesn't automatically bill you when it expires + Potentially cheaper than paying directly by credit card
I've only paid by time card for the last year. I've saved at least $20 over paying directly. I pay taxes if I pay directly so buying the card at MSRP (without tax) is cheaper. Do the math for yourself; you may just figure out you've been missing a great deal here.
Also, if you don't have this game but play another PlayNC title you can use it for that game instead. Yes, you can use this card for Lineage II, Auto Assault, and City of Villains.

What our customer's say!
"Cheap", The price for this card changes alot, but I've seen it go as low as $17 without shipping... That is an amazing price! I mean it is wayyyy cheaper if you get the card at that price than pay 1 full year of CoH. I never buy the subscription off the site, I always buy this or the CoH card, which works for both games (CoH and CoV). If amazon ever stops selling these, I'll just have to stop playing the game.
"good for online gamers", i got this game as a present and i decided to buy a time card here with amazon and they gave me the completely wrong product but the game is ok for those who have lots and lots of spare time for online gaming
"Wonderful game for non-gamers", I'm not really into multi-player games. The graphics and feel of the game is wonderful. The maturity level of the on-line players is very high which makes the game very relaxing and exciting at the same time. I'll be playing until the servers go down.
"great game, great idea", I bought this time card for my husband. he and I are city of hero/city of villain players. This is a great idea because it is much cheaper to buy the time card. this is a really fun game, you build your character and then you get missions to complete. my review does not do the game justice. I prefer heroes to villains but each person has their own opinion.
"Subscription Cards offer alternative to paying by Credit Card", This isn't really a review of the City of Heroes Game itself but the 60 day subscription cards. Personally, I like using the time cards because it offers a lot more flexibility in terms of when I want to play and I don't need to budget for it using Debit/Credit Cards. One of the best aspects of NCSoft Subscription cards is that they are all generic and can be used for all NCsoft games requiring subscription cards. Here's NC's official post on their [...]
Game Time Cards offer a convenient and uncomplicated alternative to paying for your game subscriptions, or allow you to kick off subscriptions to any of the following games;
* Auto Assault * City of Heroes * City of Villains * Lineage II
I just find the cheapest cards and can apply them to the game I play, regardless whether it says so on the box or not.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Great way to fund the fun!", City of Heroes is a very fun game (see my review of the game itself under that game - 5 stars). This review is actually for the game-time prepaid card, which is a very convenient way to pay for the monthly online fee for this game. This is a great gift for anyone who has the game, but may struggle with the subscription, especially kids who never seem to have enough cash. You may wonder why you should encourage kids to play video games instead of doing other constructive things - well, look at it this way - they're gonna play games anyway and at least this one is about being a Good Guy! Save the poor victims, defeat the evil bad guys, follow the law, etc. Definitely good values for our kids to be emulating.
"What the.....", I hate these cards. I just had to return my game because i didn't have a card. you shouldn't have to pay. this is just a scam to get more money out of you!
"this sucks", This sucks!!! You shouldn't have to pay just so you can play a game you already payed for! I think a wise idea is to get rid of the #*%@ cards!

"NCSoft's latest financial results say it all.", NCSoft recently published their financial report for the first quarter of 2006. Revenue for City of Heroes/Villains is down 58% in the last three month period. Keep in mind that many people sign up for 6 or 12 months at a time so this only reflects the people who's accounts have expired in that time. Also keep in mind that this is a 58% decline after including any new players who signed up during that period.
They have so thoroughly ruined the game that most of the people who still have accounts are not playing them (choosing just to let them expire rather than play). They are offering incentives just to try and get people to log on once a week! (Check out the City of Heroes web site for more info).
While other online games (like World of Warcraft) are growing through word of mouth, City of Heroes/Villains is hemorrhaging users en mass. The reason is simple, in order to slow leveling in the game they have made the game a tedious bore to play. You no long feel like a super hero/villain.
Now you could trust the people giving this game a positive review keeping in mind they have a vested interest in getting people into the game to play with, or you could trust the nearly 60% of the players who quit the game in the last 3 months. You have only to go to their own site to see the incentives they are offering just to get people to log on. Fun games don't have to offer incentives to get people to play, people WANT to play.
Avoid this one like the plague folks.

--------------------------------------------
I've been a loyal player of City of Heroes for over six months. However recent ill considered changes made to the game by the developers have ruined the game I used to love playing.
The developers have decided that they need to "guide" players into the "correct" way of playing the game by eliminating options players had in designing their characters. This has resulted in ruining the thing that made this game so fun to play.
These changes have been coming every few weeks culminating in a massive change that went in on 10/26/2005 that has lead to large numbers of players canceling their accounts and leaving the game, including myself and most of my friends in the game.
Be warned, this is no longer the same game that so many people reviewed favorably in past reviews. Had I rated it 2 months ago I would have given it five stars. However, this game takes many months to develop a character (and with recent changes character development has been slowed by at least half), and nothing is more frustrating then to spend months developing a character only to have it drastically weakened repeatedly.
If you don't relish the idea of paying $15 a month for many months creating a character only to have your creation destroyed by a company that chooses to ignore the pleas of thousands of its' customers, I'd suggest spending your money elsewhere.
