"Great Quality and Easy to Use" This is a great little unit that encodes real time. I am happy with the quality from a VCR, the quality will depend on the source tape of course. I have not used a digi-video camera yet. Setup was no problem, just make sure you update all drivers, firmware, and software for best performance. The software is pretty basic but gets the video on to the computer without any issues. If you want to do fancier editing, then you just need to use a more complete video editor.
The only issue is that the first unit i got would not record/send the left channel audio. I returned the unit to Plextor and got a working one. Kind of a bummer, but Plextor customer service is the best i have ever worked with. I will always suggest plextor hardware to anyone after this experience.
All in all, i am pleased with the quality of the files and feel it was worth the money.
"EN JOYING THIS BOX" Almost having too much fun to stop and write this review. Once I got the wires straight (I have a mono VCR?), I haven't had any problems. Being a novice, I thought I would have to learn a lot before using the equipment but was pleasantly surprised. I opted for the Roxie Creator 9 software instead of installing the software that came with the Plextor only because I didn't realize it came with software and I had already ordered the Creator 9. I find that the two work great together. The same might be true about the software that is included.
Anyway, it was easy to set up and easy to capture the VCR tapes. I'm working on a Christmas project to put together years of family home movies and this converter is making it possible.
"It's OK" The hardware works fine, but the software is pretty lame. The WinDVD program would not run at all on my system. It appeared to be a conflict with another USB TV tuner I have, the Xtreme Vidio from Diamond. The GoCap is simply featureless. The ULead program that was also included did work fine and there were no problems with both the tuner and the capture device on at the same time. However, like most of these Video software programs, the interface looks like it was designed for kids. You can watch full screen TV with the Plextor, but NOT while you are capturing - then you have to settle for a small screen within the program interface. How dumb is that? Do they think that you set up to capture something and then go out and mow the lawn or something? I don't get it. Anyway, it works so I can't complain too much.
"Plextor DV Converter PX-M402U" I followed the advise of other purchasers and downloaded the current drivers for this converter from Plextor. I had no difficulties getting the device to work, and was converting VHS to digital in less than 15 minutes including the downloads. It performs flawlessly and I am fully satisfied with it.
"Tech Support Does Not Reply" Product does not work with Windows Vista. Tech support will not reply to my requests for help to see if there are plans for updated drivers/software. Need to return product.

What our customer's say!"Never Worked", I bought this to use as a capture device for my laptop, and I never got it to work at all. I used several different computers and installed the drivers and software several times only to be frustrated every time. The device really urges you to use the software that comes with it, but I would prefer using my own version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. Of course the Plextor would not work with either its own software or mine. Since I had purchased it a while back and hadn't gotten around to using it for some time, I didn't bother to return it, so I can't comment on the customer service of Plextor. "Fantastic For Converting Old VHS Tapes and Camcorders", Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RIUGAXEU1ZMCF The Plextor ConvertX looks, work, and is great. I take a more in-depth look at the Plextor ConvertX Digital Video Converter. The video was captured with the ConvertX and edited in Vegas Movie Studio 6. "No Vista", I e-mailed Plextor a couple of weeks ago trying to find out if this unit will work with VISTA. They just told me NO, and suggested their PX-AV200U. I was looking forward to a more higher end DVC from them since I own several of their DVD drives for my computers. :-( Guess I will shop around...Terry, Hayward, CA "Does what it promises", Plextor always has great products. I was able to install and use right away. Moved old VHS family video to DVD with no problems at all. The software it comes with is decent. I found Roxio Easy Media Creator works well with it although 8 better than 9 at this point. 9 had issues with gaps between videos that caused it to crash. So if you have 9 just use the software it came with to import the videos and Roxio is still great at editing and adding extras. "It comes with instructions!", I had been wondering I if ever would be able to digitilize tens of videotapes I have of my children. The Plexto ConvertX makes it possible in an easy way.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Works OK, with some help", I have converted around two dozen VHS and Hi8 tapes to DVD using this device. It works OK, but not out of the box.
You have to capture using Plextor's software, either their GoCap or the bundled version of WinDVD Creator. The WinDVD Creator 2 that came with my unit was out of date, and I had to download some updates from Plextor's web site. GoCap exposes more settings than WinDVD Creator, but only outputs audio in MPEG-1 layer 2 format, which some programs and devices don't support.
WinDVD Creator is pretty useless for anything but capturing. To edit MPEG-2 video at a reasonable speed, I use Womble MPEG Video Wizard. To author DVDs, I use Sony Vegas DVD Architect Studio, which has pretty good themes and is quick because it only has to render the menus.
To get the best results when capturing to hard disk in WinDVD Creator, I use the following device settings: Use "MPEG-1 and MPEG-2" format with "DVD HQ (High Quality)" profile. Uncheck "Stop recording if detects bad video signal" (such as between camcorder shots). In Options>Output Format, use LPCM Audio (some of the other programs I use don't support Dolby or MPEG audio).
Even at the highest quality setting, I see block artifacts and choppyness during action scenes such as fast camera pans. I would rate its output "almost DVD quality"; in general its output looks a little grainier than the original sources.
I haven't had any problems with crashes, freezes, or audio/video sync. My PC is an Athlon XP 2800+ with 1GB RAM running Windows XP SP2.
"Not bad, but I think I'm less of a fan of USB than I used to be ..", We bought this device with the express intent of capturing old VHS tapes and putting them into DVD format. For that, it works and the bundled software meets the need.
However!
This (VHS to DVD) is a long and slow process, so don't kid yourself into thinking that the MPEG4 HW decoding in this box is going to make that a super-fast process. The actual "making" of the DVD movie is still very time consuming, as is the editing. I'm not so impressed with WinDVD, but my son (who did most of the editing) preferred its ease of use over the Ulead product, which was also included.
We had trouble with one of the USB ports, even though all of the ports on the PC (purchased less than a year ago) are supposed to be high speed 2.0 USB. But using another port allowed the device to be found and connected.
I wish there were some way to tell if frames are getting dropped. Some video was pretty choppy (and didn't look that way on the VHS) but I couldn't quite figure out what was causing the problem, and it didn't repeat on later uses.
So far, we're happy we got it. If the [...] arrives w/o too much struggle, I'll be even happier.
"Box itself works fine, but...", This is a real mixed bag. My impression is that the capture unit itself works pretty well. I've been using it to transfer Hi-8 video to DVDs. When I preview video on my PC, it's fine...audio and video synched up, etc. But actually getting useful output saved to disk has been a struggle. It's not clear to me if my problems have been my PC or their software, but it's been tough. Getting the InterVideo WinDVD Creator software to work at all was a hassle. Many software freezes, many reboots. Two tips: 1) before you do anything else, download and install all the applicable updates from Plextor's site. 2) when you hit the 'record' button in the software, don't touch your PC again until it's done recording. It took me a while to figure out that any other activity on the PC can screw up a recording. The main problem I have now is with audio synch. It seems like the higher the resolution of the video, the more lag is introduced in the audio track.
My PC: Athlon 64 3000 (Venice core), 1 GB RAM, Abit mobo.
"Satisfied!", I just make it very short!
I'm very satisfied with Plextor, it is just i expected to be! All my home videos are digitalized with no problem at all. I even recorded shows from my tv and everything working as it must be!
I suggest warmly to use this converter!
"Well Satisfied", Excellent product. All my VCRs are dying of old age. I am converting my home library to DVD with very good results. Once you figure our ULEAD and WinDVD, conversion is just a matter of time spent running each video.
