What our customer's say!

"TechTool Pro v4.6.1 will not work with Mac OS X 10.5", I've had Tech Tool Pro from the start. I thought it to be essential. Not so as it will not work for me with Mac 6S X 10.5.

I have a G-Drive 500 GB exterior hard drive. It is the item 4.6.1 cannot deal with. I have just run a complete defrag of the G-Drive in this, my 20th or so attempt to get 4.6.1 to run. Running the medium program, as recommended for periodic maintence, it runs to Volumes, Volume Structures (for the G-Drive) to the point of Catalog File (B-Tree) number 1394362 of 2604014 and freezes. Nothing clicks. The computer must then be completely shut down then restarted in order to get the disk to eject.

This completely worthless. And to think I paid an upgrade from 4.5 only to get the code more perfectly written to serve the Intel processors. My unit is still a Powerbook with G4 chip.

And to think I paid for the 4.6 then the announcements about 5.0 began with explanation mmost all of us would have to pay for an entire upgrade again.

If Micromat thinks we will all be sheep & buy 5.0 they have another thing coming.

"Do NOT waste your $$$$", To begin with, TTP is not by any means the only game in town. It is however, going to be the the most expensive or completely useless. Micromat will be happy either way. As a current Micromat customer, I am the proud owner of an expensive utility that worked for all of two months. Leopard broke it completely. When Micromat updated their utility to be compatible with Apple's current OS, they wanted all of us to pay them again. They simply renamed the "update" from "Techtool Pro 4" r4.5.3 to "Techtool Pro 4" r4.6.1 an "upgrade". They're also calling their all new "Techtool Pro 5" an "upgrade". Do yourself a favor, buy Diskwarrior and you'll only have to pay for it just the one time.

"excellent service", received shipping notice right away. did not receive my software for like a month. emailed amazon and they sent another one right away.

"Unsafe program sold by sleazy jerks", I purchased this product and it worked for a while, then leopard came out and I needed up purchase a upgrade disk for 25 bucks plus shipping, no download offered. Then after "optimizing" my harddrive I had to reinstall leopard because my permission were broken beyond the repair of disk utility. When I tried to contact their technical support they made me register the product, which is fine, then enter a registration number which I didn't seem to have, so no help for me. Now they're advertising techtool 5 and despite the fact that I'd purchased the product only one and a half months ago they told me I would have to purchase yet another upgrade to get the latest version; so I tossed away the upgrade money for nothing.

Disk utility is fine for disk maintenance, for SMART monitoring I suggest iStat pro. Don't buy this or anything from micromat.

"Solid program", I recently went in to my neighbhoord Mac place (not an Apple store) where the fix-it guy said that they didn't sell software like TechTools anymore because OS X was too hard to make repairs on your own. I had used TechTools with previous Mac OX versions and found it helpful, so I didn't believe the guy. I purchased TechTools through Amazon. Even so, I had to go 50 miles to the nearest Apple Genius Bar because I was definitely having significant issues with an iBook G4 that I couldn't quite figure out. The tech got it running, for free I might add. Then I ran the tests and things in TechTool Pro 4 to get the machine back in shape. It has run smoothly for awhile.

MicroMat also has a pretty good forum where employees answer questions relatively quickly.

I do think that running TechTools on occassion probably would have helped me avoid the previous problem. I think, for the price, buying and using TechTools is like added insurance.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Better than Norton", At least this doesn't scatter files all over my hard drive. I bought it on a recommendation from an all digital music studio owner. I complained that I didn't like Norton Utilities because you could never clean all the files off your dirve and it did disk save stuff that I couldn't turn off. Now after using TechTool I'm impressed that it only did what I wanted it to do which was to defrag my disk. It has a lot of other tools in it's kit but they didn't self install and clutter up my drive. It allowed me to use only the features I wanted without loading up my dirve with stuff I didn't want. I too will be recommending this product.

"Nice product to have", I'm a big proponent of routine maintenance and this is the only tool I use to keep my iBook in check. Easy to use.

"Frustration Guaranteed", After you use the program's CD as your startup, it's difficult to get back to your regular startup. The manual says if you start from the CD by holding down the "C" key, the startup preference isn't changed. Not true on my Mac. The manual suggests holding down the mouse button: sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. The manual has several other suggestions, none of which are reliable. And every time you fail, you have to wait forever (about 10 minutes) for the program to boot from the CD before you can try something else. Too much hassle. I am going to throw the program away.

"mac maintaince", Techtool pro 4 took 2 hours to load. Without asking it defraged my hard drive so it could be all in one block. After that I could not get my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo running OS 10.4.9 to start: "Can't find start up file". I tried all the suggestions from Dr. Mac including single user and the original OSX software, all to no avail. At the shop they ran DiskWarrior which found and replaced the start up file. $80 for TechTool and $45 for repair and I didn't even have a problem in the first place. After that TehcTool worked fine, but I was not impressed.

"TTP 4.5.1: Indispensable Mac app", If you own a Mac, you're foolish to not invest in 2 fixit apps, TTP and DiskWarrior (DW's unfortunately not yet available for Intel Macs, but should be, soon). TTP does everything you need to do, and does it reliably. It also has an "eDrive" feature, a bootable 2nd volume on your drive containing what you need to fix things (necessary because a volume can't fix itself), which is immediately available when you need it. (DW "only" rebuilds the directory, but that is arguably the most important single thing which sometimes needs fixing. The reason you should have both utilities is that sometimes one of them can fix the directory when the other can't, since they use different approaches. Actually, a Mac owner already owns a fixit utility packaged with the OS, DiskUtility. While the weakest of the three, it, too, is sometimes useful for repair.)

I can't agree with the criticism I've read in the other reviews. If the version of TTP is appropriate to the version of the Mac OS, TTP works as advertised. If the user has inadvertantly used the wrong version, then it's like putting diesel fuel into a gasoline engine. The blame for that mistake can hardly be laid on Micromat's doorstep. I've used TechTool on many different Macs since its beginnings, and it has never caused me a single problem, but it has averted or corrected a number of them.
