"Follow-up that doesn't Disapoint" Aliens is the successful sequel to Ridley Scott's classic Alien, and sets the tone for a multitude of future science fiction films. Moving away from the horror genre of Alien, Aliens is a pretty straightforward action film, full of violence and colorful dialogue, which certainly won't disappoint most viewers. Being a follow-up to a film like Alien Director James Cameron made sure to make this his film and not reuse concepts from the ground breaking original. That being said, however, some of Cameron's changes do cause the aliens to lose their mysterious nature that we were presented with in the first film, but I'll be back with more on that in just a second.
The plot revolves around the first film's lead female character, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and how she goes back to the planet where she first encountered the alien that killed off her crew. Having been in cryo-sleep for decades a lot of things have changed, such as her daughter dying of old age. Ripley doesn't seem to have much to live for anymore so she goes along with the operation when contact with a local colony is lost. Escorted by the marines, she encounters the only survivor, a girl by the name of `Newt'. Having just lost her own daughter, Ripley quickly bonds to the child. Of course this wouldn't be Aliens if everything didn't go wrong, and soon all the characters are fighting for their lives (and quickly losing). Ripley must step up to the challenge and confront her fears once again.
Aliens is probably my favorite film in the series, due to high levels of action, colorful characters, and memorable scenes, but do I think it's better than Alien? No, I most certainly do not think that this film tops the work of Ridley Scott. I love James Cameron's work, and Aliens, but his film is not as well made as Scott's first film, even if I do enjoy Cameron's film more. A key issue I find with Aliens is the liberties Cameron took on the species, which in so doing, destroys their mystery.
In Alien we were presented with a terrifying creature that was quite frightening. This creature crawled, and moved across the Nostromo with great elegance, and was always able to catch its victims by surprise, often showing an advanced level of intelligence. Driven by its survival instincts this animal did whatever it took to survive, while also showing curiosity (examining the cat, but not harming it, and not attacking Ripley upfront in the escape pod). In Cameron's action-packed sequel most of these aspects of the species are lost. The first hive scene, seeing the aliens come out of the walls which they had blended into so very well, was in the nature of the first film, but after that they lose most of the nature of the sleek skinned alien of Scott's film, and came across as having the inteligence of your typical pack animal. They're noisy, they swarm, exhibit very little intelligence and just lose a lot of their "scare factor." In this film the aliens are like zombies; there's a lot of them, they swarm, get blown to bits in mass to the cheers of audience members (honestly, you know the zombie genre is popular because people love seeing mass quantities of things blown up in gruesome fashions). The Alien Queen is probably just as iconic as the original "drone" class of the species, but Cameron's "ant hive" structure just doesn't seem to fit in as well with what we saw exhibited in the first film of the franchise. It's just too simple, and well... down to earth. I don't think if there had been a hive full of Scott's aliens that they would've simply run headlong into gunfire, because in the first film the species was shown as being something that would do ANYTHING to survive and multiply.
Okay, critic time is over, and I must say that the hive structure does work out very nicely in this film, and the aliens look great, especially the queen. The action is intense, but never really frightened me for a second. The action is very well shot; Cameron having just shot The Terminator knew how to do entertaining action sequences.
This is my favorite film in the franchise, and it is that way for most viewers, but I can't bring myself to say it is on par with the greatness of Scott's Alien. Aliens comes pretty dang close to besting it, but in the end it comes down the atmosphere, and Scott's film had it more so than Cameron's. I will always love Aliens, and will never deny it as my favorite film in this series, but Alien was a film that ultimately had everything needed to become a classic.
I give Aliens a strong 5/5
"Mostly Lives Up To The First Installment. Mostly." Cameron's bigger budget, higher octane follow up to the ground breaking 'Alien' has more of everything that the first film had, but that doesn't mean it is the superior film.
James serves up the action with a good helping of cheese, thanks in large part to Bill "We're all gonna die" Paxton and the rest of his cliched 'elite soldier' comrades. Throw in a side of Newt (They mostly come at night. Mostly.) and you get just a little more silly dialogue than you can ignore.
Where the film triumphs is in the relentless tension created by the character's ever more desperate circumstances and dwindling numbers. Cameron's hordes of aliens don't deliver the same scares as the lonely ET in 'Alien' but they are more menacing, not just by virtue of numbers but by improvements in special effects.
This is a modern classic, a standard setting film, and a must-have for serious sci-fi fans. This DVD includes two versions of the film, commentary and more extras than you could want. A collectors edition that deserves the title.
"One Scary Movie" I have a few things in mind when I review a movie and unlike the professional critics it has nothing to do with artistic merit or who won the oscar. What makes this film great is...
1) It is one of the best if not THE best of the genre 2) It WILL make you tense and put you right in the action 3) It has strong replayability
Buying a DVD is a luxury for me so I make sure that it is a damn good film before I hit the 'buy' button. Aliens is a classic movie that will be with you for years and you will find yourself watching it over and over again. This is probably one of the top 10 DVDs I own.
"The best of the Alien movies " Aliens, the sequel to Alien, is the best of the Alien quadrilogy, and is one of the most influential science fiction movies ever made. You can find references to this movie in sources as diverse as the film "Starship Troopers," the PC game "Starcraft" and TV's "Battle Star Galactica." In a three way tie with "Bladerunner," and "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," for best science fiction film ever made, Aliens is a thrill ride with some of the most chilling visuals of any horror/science fiction film. Lt. Ripley is also one of the most memorable characters in any sci-fi movie or science fiction franchise. Aliens is so good, I can almost forgive Sigourney Weaver for her recent, ridiculously cheesy Direct TV commercial.
"An Engaging Thriller" This isn't so much a strict sequel to Alien as it is a re-imagining of the Alien mythos. As one of the greatest horror films ever made, Aliens couldn't possibly have been an acceptable follow-up if Cameron had tried making it a horror film. Luckily, the very smart decision was made to turn Aliens into an action-thriller film, and it succeeds. Aliens, while an entirely different sort of film, is taut, engaging, and very well-made.
The characters and plot are nothing special here. In Alien, the real star of the show was the Nostromo. The dark, claustrophobic spaceship provided the perfect backdrop for Giger's shadowy creation to stalk around. In Aliens, the aliens themselves are the stars. Whereas we never get too clear a picture of the adult alien in the first film (even at the end, the creature is still guised in shadow), aliens are quite clearly visible in this film. The special effects are magnificent. The queen alien is perhaps one of the most majestic and terrifying creatures ever to appear in a film. And Ripley's final descent into the collapsing hive is a visceral and disturbing descent into Hell itself.
The action is intense, the various moments of anticipation are nerve-wracking, the special effects are eye-popping, and the story, if more conventional, is adequate for the purposes of the film. The acting is a bit weak in some areas, but not enough to be distracting. Overall, this is a solid and entertaining film, and one of the few instances where a sequel actually manages to be decent.

What our customer's say!
"Superlative", PLOT: The sequel to Alien (1979) sees the sole survivor of the Nostromo crew, Ellen Ripley, return to the nightmare planet with a platoon of gung-ho space marines and an array of incredible armoury. While the mission is sold to Ripley as a species extermination, there are ulterior motives at play. All intentions become irrelevant, however, once the extra-terrestrials arrive on the scene.
REVIEW: To date, the chief criticism of Aliens from most critics is its slow first half and its departure from its predecessor's elegance and claustrophobic style. Yet there is a wealth of exceptionally sharp dialogue maintained throughout the film, including during the first hour, and once the action begins in earnest, the claustrophobia returns with a vengeance and many spine-tingling moments ensue.
While the sequel's cast was largely inexperienced, talented newcomers such as Lance Henriksen (Bishop), Paul Reiser (Burke) and Bill Paxton (Hudson) utilised the marvellous script to leave lasting impressions on viewers and thus build illustrious careers as both character actors and leading men. Of course there's also the much-expanded alien cast, which includes the hideous alien monarch in her terrifying screen debut. And finally, there's Sigourney Weaver, in the performance of her career as Ellen Ripley.
Score, production design and special effects are solid, and arguably timeless. They should appeal to teenagers of both today and yesteryear. I say "teenagers" because it was when I was a teenager that my friends and I were entranced with this film: the high-tech weaponry; the gung-ho battles; the deadly and elegantly repulsive extra-terrestrials...and the even deadlier Ellen Ripley...
ELEPHANT STAMPS: James Cameron for writing. Sigourney Weaver for acting.
"JollyGreenGiant", This film was a staple of my youth. I was an usher in a movie theater when it was released in the '80s. The reactions I kept hearing from the crowd were amazing and now twentysomething years later it still is one of the best Sci-Fi films ever made. The DVD looks great and the sound is incredible but the special features disc is the treasure. The feature length "making of" documentary was very entertaining and informative from, casting, to set construction, to special effects and creature design it had it all. That's the kind of features I like to see not the ones where they all talk about how great working with each other was. But, to delve into character development and script writing what it took to bring James Cameron's vision to the screen, that's the good stuff. Forget all the other special editions this is the one to have.
"Outstanding sci fi shooter!", This is one of the best sci fi films I've ever seen. It's got tension, gore, excellent setpieces and some brilliant lines. The direction is incredibly good and the DVD is well worth getting. It's a superb film that can be watched over and over again. Amazingly good.
"How can't you like this?", Seriously, if you like either sci-fi or action movies, I can't really give you a reason not to like this movie. i think people who rate this movie below a 3 are really either not fans of either genre of film mentioned above or really really stupid. Great action scenes, great special effects(for the time) and great pacing. Listen, they already did the suspense portion of the story. You already seen the alien so it makes sense to put you face to face with it. What better way of doing that then space marines. What, are they going to send scientist or another mining crew? Then you have the same movie over again. So, we finally get a bigger picture of who the "company" really is, and what they will do to secure said alien. What that means to us action fans is a lot, and I mean LOT, of firepower. The action scenes are a delightful mixture of frenetic helmet camera shots and pretty good solid camera work. The camera does not bounce from shot to shot as much as 90 percent of action movies from that era. Oh for the sci-fi fans, we have wonderfully detailed aliens here. The designs are top notch and the way we see how they live and hunt as a pack would scare you out of your skin if you were one of those marines. I loved how this movie played out. To me, it was fast enough that I never got bored, yet seemed to take it's time to let fans of the original get involved in new plot lines and newcomers get a understanding of the alien mythos. I don't know what else to say except, I love this movie.
"Easily, the best out of the series!", Rarely do you come across sequels that surpass the original by a very long shot and this one does just that. James Cameron easily brings probably his best movie of his career to the screen while making the franchise a world wide million dollar hit. This comes with great action sequences, nerve wrecking tension and special effects with fantastic performances by Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton as well as boasting a lot more action than the original Alien which is still a fantastic movie.
The extras are pretty indepth including Cameron's original story treatment and every from pre to post production footage and information. Also you have the choice of choosing the original theatrical version or the new extended version. The theatrical version gives you the 1986 classic original and is great fun. But the extended is far more entertaining with making a difference of about 17 minutes with more story and character design and of course more action. This is great and the added are mostly for good reason, but occasionally it is unnecessary and may slightly damage the suspense. However both of the version are brillantly executed.
This is by far the best out of the series followed by the original and also helped Sigourney Weaver walk away with an oscar nomination from a movie that will be a classic forever. However this is where you stop in the quadrilogy because three and four are ruined by poor storytelling and stupidity.

"A Better Film", "Aliens" shows a vast improvement over the first Alien film, which--in my opinion--isn't the classic it's made out to be. You can see my elaboration on that in my review for that film; but as for this movie, I was much more satisfied with the story, characters, and even direction than I was in the first film.
Writer/director James Cameron shows an effort to make this film a bit more character oriented than the first film, which didn't give us a chance to connect with the characters. Ripley is fleshed out by the appearance of Newt, a young girl whose family has been killed by the aliens. We now see Ripley not only fighting for her life, but fighting for Newt's as well. She grows to care very much for the little girl, which creates some very strong suspense during the violent and thrilling climax. Another character that, despite his short screen time, feels fully fleshed out and real is the android Bishop, who I had grown very attached to by the end of the movie. The other characters other than Ripley, Newt, and Bishop aren't really that fleshed out, and the military personnel often revert to cliches and one-dimensional characters.
The acting isn't all that great--especially with the panicky soldier that says "we're done for meeyyan!" every five seconds--and even Sigourney Weaver doesn't give an all around impressive performance. What she does handle well, and what the entire film handles well actually, is the climax, where Ripley (Weaver) races to find Newt, throwing herself into a building infested with full sized aliens, face-huggers, and something much worse and much bigger.
Overall, this film easily beats out its predecessor for best Alien movie. I'm definitely on board to see the other two films in the series, and see if they--despite what critics have said about them--can compare.
6/10
"One of my favorite movies of all time", Let me begin by saying, I'm a huge fan of the first two movies in the series, specifically Alien. I loved the nail biting suspense of not knowing what the creature looked like or where it was, or even what it could do. Suspense... that was the first movie.
Action... that is this movie. Almost from the beginning we have aliens and gunshots to keep us entertained and at the edge of our seat.
Aliens takes place after Ellen Ripley (Weaver) returns to earth from the first movie. Plagued by nightmares and the loss of her child (an added scene to the DVD which gives a bit more depth to he character). Enter Paul Reiser as the token corporate schmuk who gets Ellen to return to the planet LV426 (where they answered the distress call in the first movie and picked up the Alien). Apparently there has been a colony of people living there setting up an atmosphere on the planet that are suddenly not responding.
Somewhere in all of this There is added in footage of the terraformers (settlers) which explains how the aliens got to the colony in the first place. This scene also gives more background on Newt.
So Ripley and a group of Marines (Bill Paxton, Michael Bienn, Lance Hendriksen and several others) set out to determine what happened to the missing colonists.
Once they land on the planet the non-stop action begins. Instead of just one alien wreaking havoc on a ship, there are now legions of them crawling all over the settlement. It turns into a life and death game of war between the two species as the humans attempt to survive in this dangerous environment.
One of the main differences between this film and the first one is that they have no problem showing the aliens to you. This takes some of the mystery out of them, however they are no less frightening. Also we are given a better understanding of how the aliens work in this movie, setting up for the third and fourth films in the series.
Another difference is in the sheer action of this flick, this one is more about gun fire, grenades, flame throwers, and painful death scenes. Unlike many action movies however, the characters are interesting and we are saddened by their demise. Even Bishop (Lance Hendriksen) the android becomes a lovable character.
There are 17 minutes of additional footage that have been added into the film since the theatrical release, I was able to find most of it, but I'm sure some is just added shots in the action sequences.
The Special Features on the DVD include cut scenes, Trailers, a slide show and a Behind the Scenes. Honestly I was disappointed because the behind the scenes wasn't the one I expected it to be. At one time I saw on TV a behind the scenes special that was very interesting and informative, this seemed to be a chopped down and edited version of that.
Incase you haven't seen the movie, the acting is believable, somewhat above what you would expect in an action adventure film. Some of the lines are a bit forced but nothing takes away from the viewer's enjoyment of the film. The script is interesting and easy to follow, I have to admit that the added in footage did help explain several of the questions I had in the original version of the movie.
The special FX are awesome and totally believable except for one awful blue screen shot at the end. All of the creatures are realistic and frightening. The sets are dark, dismal, and add to the overall feel of the film. (My mom always asks why in the future everything has to be so ugly). The action scenes are fluid and exciting to watch. I have nothing negative to say about the movie.
If you like the film buy the DVD to get the additional footage and to own a classic Action/Horror Flick. Don't buy it just for the DVD extras because they aren't all that exciting.

"One of the Great Movies.", Aliens is the best of the Alien series of films, it is one of the greatest action films ever made, and it is, along with The Terminator and The Abyss, one of the defining films of James Cameron's early career.
This DVD presents both the adrenaline pumping, oppressive, upsetting, and exciting theatrical cut, and the longer, better developed director's cut. Both are excellent films, and for the picture to be truly appreciated, both are essential. If one is better, it is the theatrical cut: the filmmakers were forced to jettison all but the essential pieces of the story and action, making for a brutal, exhilarating ride.
The special features are equally worthwhile, most especially the commentary and introduction by Cameron. The film speaks for itself, however, and we should each feel individually privileged to have both versions presented to us in such excellent sound and picture quality.
"Absolutely destroys the original.", Bigger, better, faster. Everything that was good about the first one was turned up ten notches for the sequel. Great story, great effects even after all these years. Not one weak link in this masterpiece. One of my top twenty movies of all time, no doubt. A must see, a must own!!! Too bad it's been all down hill for the franchise after this. Bummer.
"Aliens", A family member (not me) has watched this movie so many times, that "I" can rattle off some of the dialogue while the movie is playing in the other room.
He loves the Director's cut- many of the scenes have only been changed in the original by a few words.
A definate classic in this home.
