"Not for the Amature" Overall the router is relatively fast. The VPN options are plentifull, but beware if you are not experienced with VPN you will have to put some time into learning and configuring VPN. For remote connectivity simplicity, you can use the quick VPN client, but that requires software installed on the remote client. I also liked the unit because it has a backup port that can be used in case your primary broadband connection fails or you can load balance between the two WAN ports. With that said, I am a home user and really don't have a need for the backup /load balancing functionality, but I'm a sucker for technology.
"Works well as a Dual WAN router"
I originally purchased a Xincom 503 Dual WAN router and wasted many many hours with its firmnware and configuration bugs - it never worked well. Eventually (months later) I gave up on waiting for Xincom bugs to be fixed and purchased this LinkSys RV082. Setup was simple and straight forward and it worked reliably since day 1. It came with the latest firmware loaded.
I'm using this router to load balance my cable and DSL broadband connections. I haven't tried and am unlikely to need the VPN features of the RV082. I do use it to host various mail and web servers and the port forwarding features and 1-to-1 maps of static WAN IP's to local IP's work very well.
I wish the DMZ was shared with a LAN port rather than the second WAN (you can't have both at once, so the choice is single WAN + DMZ or DUAL WAN and no DMZ).
The unit has a quality look and feel which is also reflected in its solid performance. Recommended without hesitation.
Update Oct 2006: The router fault light came on after months of reliable operation and the unit would no longer work. Linksys did a cross-shipment with a brand new replacement (since it was within the warranty period).
I remain very happy with the router and would definately buy again despite needing a replacement. LinkSys cross-shipment worked well and the replacement arrived in about two ot three days.
"An IMPORTANT tip" Okay, this will be brief and is being posted only as helpful hint rather than an indepth review.
If your speeds are fine when directly connected to your ISP, but are slow or unstable when running through the RV082 try the following:
Under the firewall tab, there is an MTU setting. You MUST take this off of Auto and use the manual setting. In my case the default manual setting of 1500 is what I needed. This solved the incredible slowdown problems I was having - in fact now I have the best speeds I have ever seen on my network.
Thanks to "Lone Stranger" and the Google search in which I found his post for finally providing me with this answer after hours of frustration. No thanks to linksys email support, who was of no use at all.
"Very unstable" I have had this router and the RV016 for well over a year now and have had nothing but trouble. Each firmware version fixes old bugs and adds new ones. I have spent countless hours with their technical support team with NO luck. read the other reviews from real users who have used this product before spending a penny. Not the reviews by magazines who only rate it on features (which I agree are very nice and got me to buy it) or from Linksys employees who post on amazon. I upgraded this from a linksys vp41 - why I now question. that is a very low cost VPN router that actually works. Whatever you do - do not waste your time with this product. I wish I had not.
"Do not buy this product if you have 2 DSL lines from the same broadband supplier" I ordered this network router for my home office. I was not able to use the product right away because of delays by Verizon to install two DSL lines here. I began using the product for the first time on 10/07/05 when the lines finally got installed. I have discovered that Cisco/Linksys who made this product have falsely advrtised this product and I am requesting return and refund. They advertise that this VPN router can load balance two DSL lines. It cannot do that from the same DSL provider which they do not document anywhere. It turns out the subnet must be different from the two lines or the router gets confused. I spoke to Linksys today and they identified that my router will not work with the same DSL provider for both lines.

What our customer's say!
"Okay router, Poor VPN client and documentation", Last year I was in the market for a VPN solution for my home office and after reading some mixed reviews I bought the RV082. The dual WAN, IPSec VPN, firewall and price were the features that sold me and as a relatively savvy VPN user, I figured I could tough it out. Boy was I wrong. This device delivers decent router performance but I couldn't get the QuickVPN software to work at all with Vista clients. The documentation is incomplete and is especially not useful for those who're new to VPN administration. Even after hours of research online and numerous tech support calls I still couldn't get the QuickVPN working, so I gave up on it and switched to another, more configurable IPSec VPN application. This did get the VPN going, and it seems stable so far, but it's annoying and disappointing that it wouldn't work right out of the box.
"a terrible excuse for a router", I have been using one of these for a few years. I just threw it away. I should have thrown it away years ago.
Even with the latest firmware it doesn't work right and is slow. It's difficult to configure. It's impossible to configure correctly. I've spent many hours on the phone with Linksys tech support, which has proved to be a total waste of time. Even through the router sucks, though, the documentation is even worse.
Save your money. Use dd-wrt. That's what I did.
"Stable and fast dual WAN VPN router", This is the third Linksys RV082 I have bought, and they are all used to connect several sites securely. Good performers even with high-grade encryption enabled, relatively simple VPN tunnel setup, good recovery from link outages, nice load balancing features for dual WAN links, and very good total system availability. Especially considering the price and the throughput this is a very good deal. The typos in the GUI and the manual luckily don't contribute much to setup challenges if you know what you are doing.
"Not a Business Grade Device", This unit basically represents the higher end of the consumer market, but is not overly serviceable as a business grade router. We own two of these routers and they are just not reliable enough. Once configured, a vpn/firewall/router is a device that should soon be forgotten. Not so with the RV082. It is definitely quirky and requires the occasional reset. We have tried several different firmware revisions and all seem to be buggy in different ways. At various times we've had trouble with the VPN, port-forwarding to our database servers, problems with VOIP, and other strange states. I think I've decided that for the price of this unit, you just can't get one box that is a fast and reliable VPN, firewall, and router. It's a little disappointing.
"QuickVPN doesn't work", I bought this router to replace my Netgeart FVS318 that was fried when we got hit by lightning. The VPN utility that came with that was too hard for the average user to configure, so the Linksys and QuickVPN utility looked good. Unfortunately the QuickVPN doesn't work, and spent quit a lot of time with Linksys tech support and still no luck. So if you're looking at this for the ease of VPN with QuickVPN, you may want to consider something else.

Read this reviews before You buy..."Does not Support Connections from "ANY" remote clients", I purchased this router to upgrade our BEFVP41. We have multiple remote sites connecting with DYnamic IP addresses. I was very disappointed in the fact that the router does ont have the option to accept requests from "ANY" Remote Gateway. After spending 2 weeks fighting with Linksys regarding this I was finally told that the only way I would be able to make the connection would be by registering a dynamic DNS for each of hte remote sites or get Static IP addresses. It makes no sense to me why Linksys would take the feature away in the RV Series routers. "Good small office router", Good small business router Strengths: Load balanced Internet connection options are great. Decent firewall. Weaknesses: VPN is a little complicated to connect to from xp/2000 Client. Have to play with the IPSec settings. I am using the RV042 and a RV082 to connect an office in the US with an office in East Europe. The VPN is working perfectly. - Excellent performance. - Very reliable. "PPTP VPN dial-in not supported", If you have an office with remote users (connecting from home, the road, hotel) then this it not the right product for you. The very important feature that is missing in the RV082 is lack of support for remote clients dialing in using the Windows-built-in PPTP VPN adaptor. Because Linksys missed on that one, you have to install VPN client software for every remote computer. and getting your hands on that software is not easy and it costs you extra money and is not provided by Linksys. This is the major difference between this router and the Cisco PIX 501 that costs just a little more. True, PIX has 10 user max and only one WAN - but it this is more then enough for 99% of users. I would buy the PIX501 and have a full-feature firewall with no need to buy extra software. "Excellent device", Appearance and initial impression: I knew when I saw the Cisco stamp on the front then I knew that this was a serious piece of equipment. It arrives in a nice metal casing with mounting hardware. It would have been nice to have all the plugs on the back with the power and the lights up front instead of having lights and e-net plugs on the same side (but this follows in line with most of Cicso switch hardware). Functionality: Everything worked just as advertised (granted I have only been using the box for a week). The GUI works just like every other Linksys product and makes setup & maintenance a breeze. Got our VPN tunnel to connect two offices set up effortlessly inside of 5 min using two of these boxes. It truly is a one-in-all box Another reviewer said that firewall had to be disabled, but I believe that it was fixed with my firmware as I had no problems with that. I also like the ability to load balance / failover with two DSL devices (which as a good selling point for the client.) Summary: Cool device, I would recommend to anyone needing to bridge two or more (up to 50) offices effortlessly and cheaply. Disclaimer: I am an independent IT pro with no affiliation to any hardware/software manfgr. In other words I dont work for LinkSys and I am saying nice things because I really like the box :)
"Definitely not ready for primetime", With all the mediocre reviews here, I was hesitant in buying this router. I bought it anyway because it is the cheapest router around with dual WAN and load balancing. Despite some of the earlier review, I am happy to report that I found everything worked including VPN, firewall, 1 to 1 NAT. And, they all worked fine together with one exception (see below). But, I did find the router to be very unstable. In the last 2 months of operations, I have had to reset it at least a dozen times. In most cases, it either failed to route, assign DHCP addresses, connect VPN or the web interface failed to respond. And, it always requires a power down cold start. I am beginning to think the reset button on the front is for decoration only. In the past 3 years, my primary WAN has only failed a handful of times, what good is dual WAN if the router fails more than that in just 2 months. This doesn't include the hundred of times that I have to reset the unit during configuration. Sometimes, the unit's software will get itself into a knot after you save a configuration. It stills works (as a router) but some of the functions like NAT or VPN won't work correctly. This is very frustrating because you don't know if it is the software bug or wrong configuration. And, of course, there are the typical cases where the unit will completely freeze up after a config save. But, at least you can see it is dead and reset it. The most disappointing thing I found was the one thing I liked about the router, dual WAN. The router will only keep both WANs up if you have it in auto load balance mode. Otherwise, it will to shut down the 2nd WAN even in manual balance mode. A problem if you want to use the IP address on the 2nd WAN for incoming traffic. The other problem is that the VPN doesn't always work when it is in load balance mode but it works fine in single WAN backup mode. Bottom line, you get what you paid for and I will not buy this unit again. Definitely not worth the headache of having the whole office scream at you every other day because the Internet is down, again!
