"Do not get this if you're running Linux"
Works fine on Windows XP, but does not work well with Linux. I've been using Linux for at least 10 years and compiling my own kernels for most of that time, and still had issues getting this card to run under Linux. My built in 10/100 NIC was much faster than this card would go. Ended up getting an Intel gigabit card that, of course, works with no issues. Save yourself some headaches and stay away from this card if it is destined for a Linux box.

"garbage"
I bought this card because I had heard it works well with linux. Well I didn't get that far with card because when it arrived it was DOA and doesn't work at all. So now I have to either pay shipping to send it back to amazon or contact dlink and try to get them to send me a replacement :(

"Connection problems"
I'm having the same connectivity issues as the other two reviewers (Noah and Casey). We have two servers where I installed the cards, running Windows 2003 Standard Server with SP1 and all updates; the servers are connected to 3COM gigabit switch. The connection starts just fine, but it cuts off in about 2 to 4 min of medium file traffic, and the servers become inaccessible - not even responding to pings. The card needs to be reset to restore the connection - only to drop it again in the next 3 minutes. We tested the switch to ensure it's working, and we tested the cabling, as well, - everything seemed working fine. Finally, we gave up and installed more expensive Intel 82541PI Gigabit cards. No problems since then.

"Great, inexpensive gigabit card for Linux and Windows"
I got this card after my on-board Gigabit adapter failed. I looked around and this was the best choice for an inexpensive Gigabit network card with Linux support. I have purchased close to 10 of them for my home office network and am very satisfied. I've since put in two D-Link switches, a D-Link WAP, and a D-Link VPN router.

My usage is limited to mostly the transfer of a lot of small files, but there are some occasional largish files. By upgrading my network to 1000 Mb/s (NICs, switches, and even cat5e cable), I now average ~35 MB/s for disk-bound file copies, which for me is great compared to my 100 Mb/s rate of ~5 MB/s. (Edit: the 35 MB/s is over Samba, I can get speeds of ~50MB/s over HTTP.) I am *not* a network engineer or sys admin so it's quite possible that one could achieve better/faster/higher rates.

Also, this NIC comes with a "faceplate" for slim profile computers. It's fairly easy to swap with a small Phillips screwdriver.

Highly recommended!

"Network keeps cutting off with the DGE-530T"
Hi,

I have a similar setup to Noah's (I use Media Center 2005 though) and similar issues with my dlink DGE-530T.
While transferring files between 2 computers with a gigabit connection- the transfer does not complete as the network cuts off the connection beforehand.

The network will also cut off and/or freeze quite often when I use the "windows remote connection" to access the computer equiped with the dlink card.

That computer also has 10/100 based onboard lan (which I disable when using the gigabit card) which functions perfectly under all situations- eliminating all potential issues with the router and switch.

I do not believe the card is defective per se (i.e. another dge-530t will probably have the same problem)- but it may be a PCI port compatibility problem. My motherboard is the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe, which is a fairly recent MB with full updated bios and of course windows xp updates.

Would appreciate any assistance on this matter.

Best, Casey

What our customer's say!

"Simply reliable and easy to install", If you've seen NICs (Network Interface Card) before, this is pretty much the standard for gigabit speed. I find D-Link to be one of the most reliable products around and so far, I haven't seen a single problem with the product, very reliable and I highly recommend.

"I have no complaints", Didn't even have to use the cd. This works great and will keep using this product. I had 2 onboard nics fail on me for some reason and had to put this in the computer.

"compatible with Window Server 2003", I purchased the D-Link NIC after initially getting two Netgear gigabit NICs (for a Vista Ultimate workstation and Windows 2003 Server). The Netgear GA311 NIC had Vista, but no Windows Server 2003 drivers. Amazon provided an RMA for the second Netgear NIC and I purchased the D-Link NIC which installed without incident on my Windows 2003 Server.

The Vista workstation, Windows Server 2003 and a NAS RAID box are connected via two Netgear gigabit switches at two locations. Unfortunately, both NICs are PCI (not PCIe) and will not be able to perform at full gigabit speeds; aside from this, the upgrade is still a significant performance upgrade from 100Mbit NICs and I hope to see my backup and file transfer durations drop to about a third of what they are now.

"Great Network Adapter", This adapter works very well. I installed in a system which runs Ubuntu 7.04, and it recognized the card with ease. The only problem I had was that it didn't quite fit into my case, but that probably has more to do with the fact that I have a microATX motherboard in a full ATX case. Definitely recommend this product.

"Lasted 3 Months!", I started having connection issues with this card about a month ago and it finally died today. I would stay away.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Easy Set-up & Fast Speeds", This PCI Adapter was extremly easy to set up and it allows for fast connection speeds. I would say that it allows for your desktop to pick up a signal from a good distance away, but not a long distance. I can't give exact distances because every situation and household is different, but I would say that if you are within 50-70 feet away you should have no problem. I am comparing this to a previous set up that was not as fast, but the reception seemed to be stronger.

"Runs great, no problems", First after reading most of the reviews I have to say that gigabit does not "speed up" your network. It will not allow you to transfer Access files faster, or to copy files faster (usually). You are almost ALWAYS limited to your hard drive speed, and the operating system.

Where we see a huge increase is in applications that talk back and forth to each other using sockets (database servers being a good example - NOT access which is a file share). We have apps internally that exceed 600 megabits / sec with these cards. We have the card installed under Server 2003, FreeBSD 5.x and 6.x, and Red Hat Linux.

Samba is not a benchmark tool, and is usually a huge bottleneck for most LAN's. If you want to test the network card use an ECHO server, or some other benchmark tool.

The big gain on this card is that it supports full duplex gigabit. Some of the other low end cards are non dma cards (all of the transfers happen from CPU, not hardware). This makes a huge difference in throughput. Some of our internal applications have seen a drop in CPU usage over the previous 100MB cards that were non DMA systems. The only exception is the Intel Etherexpress PRO Gig S card. It uses a hardware chip for SSL encryption as well and can save a lot of CPU for web servers that use SSL.

"Its ok", I didnt get the performance increase that I expected with this product.

On one hand, it is faster than 100 mbps. So I'm not complaining about that part.

I brought a DLink 1gbps switch and 2 DGE-530T cards. I installed one in my desktop and another in my file server.

Then I tested it by transferring 100MB and 200MB files from my desktop to my file server. My desktop is a windows XP pro machine fully updated, and my file server is a gentoo linux running samba. I transferred via file sharing (using samba).

It took roughly 10 seconds to transfer a 200MB file, which is roughly 20MB/sec. Translated into bits, this equals 160Mbits/sec, which is a performance gain.

The second and more serious issue is when I connect to any other computer or network device from my desktop (backbone is 100Mbps, 1gbps switch connects to backbone) - network connection actually drops when high rate transfers occur.

One real life example: I run realvnc on my desktop. And I use the viewer on my laptop (54 mbps wifi connection) to connect to my desktop. I also ping my desktop at the same time. After few seconds of sending the screen on my desktop to my laptop, my desktop stops responding to ping. It takes 3 to 5 seconds before my desktop starts responding again.

Also when I play games such as warcraft 3, my laptop shows my desktop ceasing to respond for few to tens of seconds before responding again. It seems that something is overloading in the network card on my desktop thats causing the cease in network connection.

There also has been few instances when I did very heavy file transfer after a long periods of mild file transferring (i.e. copying a file over after playing an online game for few hours) - and my network card would completely cut out. I would need to disable then enable the network card to get it to work again.

I have not been able to replicate those problems on my server. Keep in mind that the network driver written in linux is opensource, while the one for windows is not.

The only reason why I am mentioning those is because another person earlier reported problems with their dlink network cards. I'm wondering if their problems are directly related to mine - i.e. they had heavy network traffic which caused their dlink card to cut out - and caused a loss of data on their file server.

I'd be interested if anybody else is having those problems with this network card, and I'm still investigating the causes and solutions.

"Ads Gigabit Speed to my Desktop", All you need is an open PCI slot, $$, and 5 minutes to install and get gigabit speeds. Oh and a gigabit switch. :)

Gigabit speeds are especially useful for transferring large files. And now-a-days almost everything is a large file. Movies, videos, CD backups, DVD backups, ghost images, ISOs, large winzip fules, etc.. And when you want to transfer them over a network and not wait around forever, then gigabit is your answer.

No problems with this card and I recommend it to others.

"D-Link Gigabit Rules!", I got one of these cards so I can game at gigabit LAN parties and I've started upgrading my home network to gigabit. All three of my PCs at home have one of these cards in them and I found the install to be so much easier than I thought. Windows basically installed this automatically for me. Just shut down, power off, physically install card into PCI slot, boot PC back up and let windows search for driver and you point to the CD that came with the adapter and BAM! you are up and running with gigabit aon the next reboot.

I can now transfer files sooo much faster between my PCs. I share and save video files, games, CDs, MP3s, etc between all my PCs and this card and gigabit switch have greatly decreased the time it takes to transfer large files from one PC to the next. This is vital at a LAN party when everyone is trading files. The faster I can go the better.

Thanks D-Link!
