"Saves money, poor execution"
I have used this product for 2 years and will probably purchase it again next year. I like having a resource for the estimates and have saved tons of money. I used to give 'garage sale' prices to my donations. The amounts provided by Its Deductible have been incredibly generous in comparison. I haven't had technical problems installing or otherwise, but its user interface is terrible. They definitely should make some serious modifications to its usability. I agree with a previous reviewer who wanted them to have it available from the beginning of the year -- I usually make donations earlier than they have the software available. I also don't care about exporting to TurboTax since I use another tax software. However, entering contributions to my tax software is no big deal. Just the totals go onto Schedule A; you don't have to put in each item. I just print the Its Deductible reports and keep them with my tax records; if I'm ever audited it's all there.

"You can't deduct enough for this to be worth it."
I purchased It's Deductable in the beginning of the 2004 to have it have a database error and never run. It got to the point where I reinstalled my entire system before it would work (this is the only solution Intuit technical support could come up with). I recently went into the software to do my taxes and ALL OF MY DATA WAS GONE! I even did a restore from tape and the software did not see my data. Basically this software, when it worked, never found prices for ANYTHING and then lost my data even after a full restore. Intuit stole my money and time.

"Not Worth The Hassle"
I love just about anything put out by Intuit and have used Quicken and TurboTax for years. I tried Its Deductible last year and initially was pretty impressed because I didn't know I was entitled to claim that much for donations. However, after all my hard work inputting all my donations, when it came time to file my taxes, there was a glitch with I.D. and it would not create a report, integrate into TurboTax or anything. I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through to customer service to get it fixed. After a whole lot of waiting and a whole lot of poor customer service, I finally gave up and was unable to use I.D. with my tax return. I was very disappointed with how difficult it was to get through to customer service. Plus once I finally did get through to someone (3 days later) they were unable to fix the problem.

"Saves taxes by getting fair value"
This program does what it is supposed to do, which is determine a fair value (for income tax deduction purposes) of items you donate.

While it did not have ALL the items I donated in its database, the items it did have were documented as much higher values than I would have estimated. Very simply, if you're in a 25% marginal tax bracket, every $100 of increased value for your donations translates to $25 reduction in your pocket. If you have donated a substantial amount of used goods to charities, and (as I did) were conservative in setting values for those goods, this program will EASILY save you the price of the software.

It's relatively easy to use, as well.

"Save your money folks"
I have been using the workbook for years and have loved it. However, the last time (this year) I tried to get one to track donations throughout the year (2004). There was none available. The company sent me one for the wrong year (last years), and it took me over a month and with at least a dozen phone calls to get it returned. I kept getting people in India who would all give me the same information as it was written for them. They had no further information because basically they didn't know what was going on. I was finally able to get costumer service in the states. They said that it was pretty much luck on if you got the U.S. or India. They told me the ItsDetuctible was bought out by another company (Intuit) and that basically we will all have to suffer with bad customer service in this large company who has outsourced most of the customer service jobs to India.

What our customer's say!

"Itsdeductible 2004, 2005", I used Itsdeductible 2004 and 2005 to track my charity donations through out both years. I bought 2003 at tax time and found it was a waste if not used to track during the year. I used TurboTax Deluxe for both tax years. It was very easy to import data from Itsdeductible to TurboTax. Down side was not all items donated are in the Itsdeductible data base and need to be done manual. This product is most helpful for noncash donations that require detail information to deduct more than $500. I was under estimating the value of donations prior to using this product.

"Great hype then fizzles out", I used the 2005 version all year and was thrilled at how easy it was and the huge tax savings (since I take many bags of donations throughout the year). It was quite a let down to discover at tax filing time that it did NOT transfer to Turbo Tax as indicated. Intuit also has absolutely the worst customer service (oxymoron) imaginable. They only send canned responses and never actually address your concerns.

The 2006 version does not exist, even though it is advertised as being available on line. After numerous attempts to purchase it and contacting them to do so, I gave up and ordered H & R Block's version.

"Easiest Way to Track and Estimate Donations", I have been using Turbo Tax software for a few years. This year I was able to purchase TurboTax 2005 Federal+ State+ ItsDeductible for $40! What a steal! I guess December is the month to buy.
This software comes preloaded with estimated values for a ton of items, and even bases the value on the item's condition. So for example a dress shirt is worth $18 if in good condition, but $9 if in fair condition. I feel a lot better after using this software because in earlier years I may have valued the same shirt for $30 :-} IT also tracks financial donations and mileage, but you can just use TurboTax for that...

"Don't buy this software", This software has only one thing going for it: a database of estimated values for your items. However, it will sucker you into spending time entering data, which you will never be able to get out in a useful form. It has the worst user interface and usability of any software I have used in the last 10 years. They should be ashamed.

"Poor interface design", This will save you money because it has a table of values based on item values in a thrift store. Unless you already know what those prices would be, it will be worth the $ for this software IF you have enough stuff that you are donating.

Three years ago I used this and judging from the comments here, the user interface has not improved one bit. I have been using computers since 1992, so I'm no noobie; but the bottom line is, if you can fugure out the inane logic of this program, it will be useful to you.
As for ease-of-use of this software ever getting any better, forget it--why would a beaurocracy care about that as long as people are buying it? I tried to get help with questions and problems when I used this 3 years ago, and the help you get (if you get any) is useless. Another corporation who doesn't care about their customers.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"ItsDeductible - Has Lost It's Edge", I've been an Intuit fan for years. I've used TurboTax for 5 years & discovered ItsDeductible in 2000. ItsDeductible was ideal for monitoring cash & noncash donations. Throughout the tax year, you could simply go to Itsdeductible.com & download updates along with revisions on the "fair market values" of items. When tax time came around, I used TurboTax & simply imported my donations from ItsDeductable. I found ItsDeductable easy to use and have used it for the 2001, 2002 & 2003 tax years.

I've read some reviews where folks wanted to print out the "market values" so they can simply do an inventory of non-cash items then go back to the computer and input the information. Unfortunately, ItsDeductable won't allow you to do this. You are forced to make a hand written list. I've always had an issue with this.

BE AWARE!, ItsDectible has had some significant problems since the 2003 year. This year (2004), I can no longer download updates from ItsDeductible.com. Recently, I discovered the 2003 datafiles on my computer no longer exists as I went to open ItsDeductible on my computer to check on the 2004 release. I can no longer access any of my previous I.D. files (i.e. 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2003). Today, was the first time I attempted to open my I.D. this year.

In past years, you could buy ItsDeductible at CompUSA, BestBuy and stores of the like throughout the entire year. I've notice I.D. has not been available in any of these stores all year. I was informed today, by BestBuy, they returned all 2003 I.D. they had in stock, but couldn't say why. I'm very surprised the 2004 release is not out. The 2002 release was available February of 2002. The 2003 year was also released in February, yet 2004 remains unattainable. What is going on?

"Poof! 2003 Vanishes on April 14", 2nd year I've used it. It has saved me a lot of money but I am looking a competitor in 2004.

After relgiously entering and tracking a ton of donations during 2003, just before I was about to export to TurboTax, there was a glitch and the software decided that I hadn't purchased 2003. I had to rekey every donation item (sometimes over 100 items in a single donation) for 2003.

We were able to get the rights back but the data had vaporized. No explanation was available. I've been a big supporter and have recommended it to over a dozen friends. Not anymore.

"Does what it says it will do. No more and no less.", I bought this product in January 2003 and began to enter all donations, both cash and non-cash donations. The product was simple to use and it ended up saving me a large chunk off my taxes. In December 2003 I was ready for the next version, but it was not available, so I bought the H&R Block Version - Deduction Pro, since I had done my taxes using TaxCut (which I preferred over TurboTax - but that's another story). I waited until I had a substantial amount of non-cash donations to make, which was after the 60 day return period. Bad move! The version I bought in December 2003 was for the tax year 2003. The 2004 tax year version is not due to be released until August or September 2004. In order to benefit from either of these products you have to enter as you go, otherwise you will miss out on the value of the deduction. I contacted the H&R Block Customer Service people (via e-mail) to see about upgrading from 2003 to 2004 and they basically told me that I was out of luck and that they had no good idea of when the 2004 version was coming out. Bottom line - It's Deductible is easy, good and, best of all, available for the tax year that you are tracking.

"Its A Joke", For years I have bought Intuit products (Quicken, TurboTax, ...) but never before have I been so disappointed. Its Deductible should really be titled "Its A Joke."

Yes, you can track your donations (cash, non-cash, mileage, medical, and other property). And yes, you can print a report
and supposedly import them to TurboTax (I did not try it). But that's it. I bought the product to not only track donations (a fairly simple task) but to also use the "market value" data to properly value all of my personal assets--my home inventory--for Quicken and for insurance purposes. Getting this information out of Its Deductible is essential impossible.

It does NOT provide a report to print out the market values (good/ fair/ poor condition) for a category of items. The only reports it does provide are limited. The only way to get this information is to write it down by hand. Oh, and by the way, the shrunk-wrapped product does NOT come with this market data on the CD. You first have to connect to the Internet. For security purposes (e.g. read about all the PC break-ins lately) my financial software and data are on a computer NOT connected to the Internet. To get anything useful from Its Deductible you'll have to connect to the Internet--a requirement that the box does NOT specify. The program will then proceed to download a 2.9 megabyte update--which on a 26.6 kbyte dial-up connection takes a loooooong time.

Worse yet is that the packaging says nothing about a "basic" version and a "deluxe" version--for an upgrade price. In the box I obviously got the "basic" version which does NOT allow you to download market value data for "Computers and Electronics." Come-on Intuit, how about some resonable advertising on your package? They also don't tell you on the package that the product is only good for one of two calendar years (e.g. 2003/2004). It's NOT a reference product that you could use for a few years. No, you'll have to buy it all over again next year. The box says nothing about that!...

Intuit, you've outdone yourself this time. Its Deductible is-- Its a Joke. I wasted hours wrestling with it to try and pry some useful market data out of it to value my personal property (to better decide what to donate, what to sell, and what to insure). It was a waste of time and a waste of money. As a long-time Intuit customer they are pushing me to the competition. The bottom line--don't buy this product.

Regretfully,
Frustrated Frank

"Better than having to look up items on your own", I bought this after reading about it in USA Today. While it isn't all I hoped for, it was very helpful in organizing and valuing most of our many donations for the year. You have to buy an upgrade to value electronics though, which is a pain. Also, the installation is only good for one tax year. Since I picked 2003, it says I need to buy another copy for 2004 (not so much of an issue for 2004 buyers...). It did export nicely to my turbotax.

Oh, one more thing - you can track medical expenses and miscellaneous expenses in it, but you can't export them to turbotax. Its up to the user whether they want to waste their time doing that, but I did not realize that at first.
