"Terrible Customer Service System"
We had problems with TurboTax this year due to the fact it was issued before all the necessary data was available and we experienced complications with downloading the needed info.

As there is no way to contact Intuit via phone, I used the "Chat's Care System" - instantaneous emailing. They told me to return the product for a refund - I was impressed. My return package arrived at Intuit - with confirmation of receipt - but no refund was issued. I contacted Customer Service, via the chat's system again. Customer Service said it could do nothing, had no fax machine at which to receive info, and that Returns has no phone at which I could contact them. Customer service suggested I send a letter to Returns and ended the chat session.

Due to the TurboTax downloading complications, we worked with a tax accountant for the first time this year. I planned to return to TurboTax next year but no longer think so after my experience with Customer Service. Ultimately, I invested time, talked with no one, and left with my problem unresolved. For me, paying a little extra to sit down face-to-face with an accountant who is not only service-oriented, but able to educate me on taxes in the process, is a far better choice than TurboTax.

"Thanks Turbo Tax -"
- for costing me an extra $200 in fee's and penalties!! There is a software bug with my state return. Turbo Tax failed to include Schedule S with my return, a common form to many returns. Take my advice - spend your money on a product that works and won't come back to haunt you, not on Turbo Tax! Forget customer support. It's a scam to suck more money from you. I will never purchase or use another Inuit product again!

"Generally good, but BEWARE"
THE GOOD: Decent user interface, logical flow, easy to move around between forms independently of the interview. Installs and e-filing have always worked fine for me.

THE BAD: Form 6251 (alternative minimum tax) handling bug. TurboTax fails to include the form in your filing package if you turn out to owe no AMT, but do have one of the tax preference items that requires form 6251 to be prepared (such as private activity bond income - very common for folks who hold municipal bond mutual funds). Plan to receive a letter from the IRS if you are in this situation. Incredibly, the Intuit website blames the IRS for mistakenly sending out letters (I read the 1040 and 6251 instructions and it is very clear that this form is required) and tells you to ignore their request!

THE UGLY: Support - forget about it. It's a joke. You have to pay $20 just to talk to someone even if the reason for your call is a bug in their application.

"WARNING! TurboTax Overdrew My Bank Account!"
I have been a TurboTax user since 1986. This year, the software malfunctioned and sent the IRS over $3500 for an estimated tax payment that I did not authorize. In fact, I specifically instructed the product NOT to make estimated tax payments. This caused my account to be overdrawn and cost me a lot of money.

Product Support was terrible. I had to give my credit card number before I could even speak to someone. When I did, they told me the wrong thing. It took me two weeks and many headaches to get the money refunded. I have lost time and money because this product. I will never purchase TurboTax again.

"Former TurboTax user finds happines with TaxCut"
I have been using TurboTax every year since the early 1990s.
This year I tried TaxCut instead, and was pleasantly surprised that it was easier to use that TurboTax.
After I did my return, my daughter did hers and made the same comment that TaxCut was easier to use than TurboTax.
The reason I use tax prep software in the first place is to make tax time easier--and in my opinion, TaxCut is the most user-friendly way to do that.

"Turbo Tax Program", Have been using Turbo Tax for close to 20 years, used Parsons Tax Edge first. The product has always worked well for me and it sure beats the old fashion paper and pencil method.

"Stunning drop in quality", There are serious problems with EasyStep, the way TurboTax takes you through filling in the information for the return. It is only because I'm knowledgeable about taxes and a software developer that i managed to get my return correct. And deviation from simply stepping through, one item after another, leads to trouble. Simply going back, using to back button, to change something can cause important screens to be skipped.

It is a real disappointment. Intuit used to be one of the very best software companies.

I certainly don't want to recommend that people by the Microsoft product. I'm sure one reason Intuit is letting quality drop is the price competition from the convicted monopolist.

My suggestion is to use a tax preparer.

"Surprised at all the negative reviews", I am so surprised to see all the negative reviews. My turbotax worked fine. I usually do my taxes by hand, but I have used turbotax in the past. I did download any updates that became available. I also got the state version and e-filed for both. All of it went incredibly smoothly. If you just have to fill out 1040EZ it isn't worthwhile, but the auto fill in is a big time saver for 1040 filers, especially if you have to do the capital gains calculations.

"Turbo Tax 2003 was a COMPLETE RIP OFF!!!", I have used TT for the past 5 years with no problems. This year, however, due to it's software glitch, I received a message on April 18 that the IRS had not accepted my return because it didn't match the info from my 2002 return (which was also filed using TT) and my PIN was incorrect. I had already gone through the update procedures, received verification of my PIN and no changes had been made to my 2002 return. I ended up filing by snail mail and included a letter to the IRS listing all the problems I'd had with TT. I don't even know to this day what is happening with my Fed return. Fortunately, I'm supposed to get a refund (although that may now be eaten up by penalties for late filing).

I also had trouble with the 2003 State version of TT and ended up filing that by snail mail, as well. I just received my State refund so guess that went okay (so far, anyway).

I will be demanding a refund from Intuit for the Fed and State versions of 2003 TT as soon as I find out what happened with my Fed return. I will also demand a refund of the charge they applied to my credit card for e-filing, which never happened. I know others who have had the same problems with the 2003 TT. If Intuit doesn't refund our monies, perhaps a class action lawsuit will persuade them otherwise.

"Incredible waste of money", I bought this product after using Taxcut for years. Taxcut has gone rebate crazy and I thought I'd give Turbo Tax a try. Bought the product in December of 2003 for some tax planning. It would not read Tax cut files - how incredible. The update to read Taxcut files wasn't available until Jan 2004 and then it would not read state files from Taxcut. Then there was a printing problem where the solution was to manually search font files and manually delete them and reinstall the program. I wound up buying Taxcut to do my taxes. Just for comparison I entered the same data into both programs - TurboTax came up with different results- owed more taxes. Now I remember why I stopped using Quicken and anything else to do with Intuit. How this company stays in business with putting out this kind of software is hard to explain. Stay away.

"Solution to Direct Debit Issue", FYI - Intuit has acknowledged that some customers encountered a problem with direct debit of 1Q04 estimated taxes that they did not intend to make as a result of an operation within the product. They've been working all week with both the IRS and payment processor to come up with a quick resolution for customers which they've just announced. Customers impacted by this just need to call 800-945-8400 to arrange to have the debited amount credited back to their account. There's more detailed information posted on the TurboTax support center web site (search for "debit" in the KB and it comes up as the first option) or link directly via http://support.turbotax.com/kb/ViewDocument.asp?documentId=1325&categoryId=80068 .

"Another long-time customer gone.", Had been a faithful Turbotax user for 10 years but this year was the last time. Unless Turbotax makes a media statement that acknowledges they really had some bugs this year, I will never look at their products again.

Had problems during the install a few days before April 15th ... a missing file. An Internet search found a December 2003 reference in PC Magazine to the same problem but Intuit had no solution then. Hey, that was four months ago! Surely they have a solution. Nope. No reference to the problem in Turbotax knowledgebase. I contacted Support and they had no clue about the problem. I've been doing software for more than a few years and it took me about 10 minutes to identify the source of the problem ... an invalid install file. After 20 minutes, Support finally pointed me to a non-Intuit web site for a potential solution and basically said, "Good luck to you."

Well, adios Turbotax. I can barely tolerate that they shipped a product with a very discoverable install error but I CANNOT accept that they had no clue how to fix it 4+ months after it was first reported.

"Unauthorized Debit of Estimated '04 Taxes!", After filing on the 15th, I waited until today to check my bank account, and I find TWO debits to the IRS! It seems this stupid program decided to authorize an estimated tax payment for '04 without my approval. I spent a few hours today with Intuit, my bank's customer service, the IRS and my local bank branch to try and correct the error. I now have to wait several weeks to get back my money, and will need to withdraw funds from my savings account to avoid being overdrawn. According to the Intuit rep, the problem is apparently not isolated. They even have a web page specifically addressing this glitch (Document #0050002608), although they of course blame the user. This is ripe for a class-action lawsuit!

"What a mess!", This was my first time using this program. I bought the software on the recommendation of a friend. They know I'm a techno-peasant and they said it would be great for me because it took all the guesswork out of everything. Well, it took me three days to actually get my taxes done. I spent more time at the IRS website than anything else because this program kept prompting me to fill out forms that I didn't need nor did I qualify for. The final straw was AFTER I filed my taxes. I clicked on a button that read "Additional E-Filing Paperwork" and found that the program not only filed the correct forms, but also the forms I revised when I caught my mistakes. I now have two schedule E forms filed, one is wrong and one is correct. I also evidently filed some kind of form to change my withholding on a W-4 form. Under the heading of FUTURE Taxes, the program suggested that I should see if I needed to revise my W-4, it never said I was actually going to file it along with this year's tax return! I doubt anyone at the IRS could possibly make heads or tails of what was sent to them. I am waiting for their call...

"Will go back to Taxcut next year", Agree with having the same problems as most of the other negative reviews.

Thought it was ME, but it's Intuit. Dangerous program, esp. if you don't happen to print out the pages first. Plus, I was lucky I could manually remove incorrect fonts within a day of submission and check the FORMS for stupid ERRORS that TT puts in. I removed random numbers instead of the address on one of the forms! Data that I never put in and changed the tax owed by $600! Taxcut wasn't perfect, but it NEVER added information....

Yes, you cannot send your taxes into the IRS electronically when the Updates you download from the website do not function at all. Intuit makes no admission even to this day that they have a serious problem that forces you to either call an accountant or just fill in your own calculations using the IRS for help. All the advertised information are fillers in a screwed up product not worth it's price, even at a discount.

I'm definitely checking this website again to see if anyone is interested in a class action suit.
