"Not for detailed working drawings."
This program does not allow you to switch to elevation and view or alter framing details. I'm only using it for a simple garage and I expected to be able to generate simple working plans with basic demensions. Not so. You might as well pick up a copy of The Sims so you could at least have some fun with it. If you want to get rough ideas this might be for you but if you actually want to work from it, forget it. Very disappointing waste of money.

"Home Designer 6.0 Experience"
I used various versions of 3D Home Architect (3DHA) extensively before buying Home Designer Suite 6.0 (HD6), and had developed a fair portfolio of my own plans using 3DHA. Here are some of the things I've discovered while tinkering with selected ones of my old 3DHA plans using HD6:

* HD6 doesn't support some of the features of my Logitech trackball mouse. Specifically, I can't use the drag lock button. I find this very frustrating, and I haven't even attempted to enter a complete house design yet.

* The cameras in HD6 produce more polished views than those in 3DHA, but the "jaggies" are still very pronounced, a disappointment. Most frustrating, though, are the HD6 camera controls, which I find inconsistent and fragmented.

* I'm old fashioned, I suppose, but I like a good manual to read. I'd rate the HD6 manual as only mediocre.

* I find the HD6 dimensioning tools harder to use than those of 3DHA.

* I have yet to figure out how to create a building lot of specific dimensions. Why can't the program produce a lot plan from survey data?

* The library function provided in HD6 is an improvement over 3DHA.

* Switching floors is much more straightforward in HD6 than 3DHA.

Overall, I'd rate HD6 as acceptable. It is not, however, significantly better than 3DHA, merely somewhat improved in certain areas and different in others.

"READ THIS BEFORE BUYING"
1. You can't print on anything over 8.5x14 paper. Useless if you want to review your house to any standard scale.

2. I bought this thinking that it would be better than my 1993 version 3.0 of Broderbund 3D Home Architect. It turns out that this is exactly the same software!

I strongly recommend looking for something better.

"great for a beginner!"
I recently purchased this program and I was able to use most of the functions without reading the instruction manual. It practically loaded and started itself. Overall, I am very impressed. The only thing that I still find confusing is cabinet design and trying to do a walk-thru of the final design. I better read the book again. I'm a beginner and I would recomend this program for anyone who likes to play around with home design and remodeling ideas.

"A disappointment"
I was excited to plan out an interior design project with this tool, but ended up disappointed. They definately oversell it as an interior design tool. Looking at the brochure online, I really think they must have touched up the images, because I don't see any way that they could have created them with this product. As a matter of fact, the website Punch Interior Design software package implies that they did just that.

The reason I don't give it 1 star is that the video tutorial section is really great. I wish all software had that.

"Guess you have to be good at Architecture", I, for the most part, am not good in architecture. When I was in college, I majored in theatre and had to take some classes that involved technical stuff such as Stage Craft and Lighting. This was where I learned how to use tools and build scenery. It was so fantastic that I ended up working in the theater shop for two and a half years.
Even though I was use to building stage scenery, I thought I could use the skills I learned in theater with this program. I can't. I'm having so much difficulty with this program that I feel like uninstalling it.
It's not easy to use if you've never designed a home in your entire life.
For example, I want my kitchen to be somewhat hidden on the second floor. Although it gives you the option of designing a second floor, I found that adding railings and a staircase is extremely hard. When I got a general look at what I've designed, my kitchen was indeed on the second floor along with my railing, but the stairs was higher than everything else and I can't get it to match with the floor and railing. Also doing different colors on each wall is hard. It puts one color on every wall instead of a specific wall. Designing cabinets and putting color to them is difficult too.
I'm glad the tutorial is there. I don't have the booklet. If anybody buy this program from the store instead of borrowing it-like I did, I suggest you read the book and watch the tutorial. If not, you're going to be like me. Stuck!

"Nice software", not for the professional but gets the job done for the most part.

"Suits my needs, but not extraordinary", I'm an engineer and work with professional CAD software at work all the time. This is slightly easier to use in some regards (because it's made for users without experience), but also lacks some of the more useful features of my work CAD package. But I guess that is to be expected from a commercially available, $75 software, compared with a $2000 package with customizations and add-ins. Overall though, it suits my needs in planning for small projects.

"impossible to use!", I bought this product after reading the other on-line reviews saying how easy it was to use. I am someone who works with computers daily and this was anything but easy! It was hard to understand and getting someone from their help desk to assist was a joke! I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone unless you're a professional architect/ computer genius!

"A good value for the average person", I feel Home Designer Suite 6 is a good value for the price. It obviously is not a full blown pro program, which I think many people expect, however it is a great tool for an ordinary person to do preliminary plans for new construction or remodeling. Those plans can then be provided to a architect or builder as a foundation for final planning. It is quite easy to learn the basics by merely following the tutorials in the manual, or on the provided CD.

"BH&G Home Designer Suite 6 Review", Great SW, easy to learn, and good graphics. Really helps visualize the space when you can see it 3D.

Could be improved if numerous similar objects could be selected and changed simultaneously (e.g., windows, doors, cabinets to get all with the same materials, colors, & hardware rather than one at a time - very labor intensive). Should warn users to select/create a style and then copy/paste them where needed.

Also, difficult (maybe impossible, because I haven't figured out how to do it) to change a room's/house's overall style once you start a given design.

"Super Software Package for Home Refurbishing", This package is very complete and easy to use. Took just a few minutes to be drawing house layouts, et. A lot of the tools are intuitive and simple.

"ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL", I have used many programs for home remodeling. I have the original Chief Architect, which I paid nearly a $1000 for, and "Suite 6" can do almost everything that the original Cheif could. I use Cheif at work, and Suite 6 at home and they are very similar, and easy to learn. Well worth the money!

"Met my expectations perfectly.", I received this for Christmas, and have been having fun playing with it ever since. I am working on designing a 'dream home' but am not building anytime soon. I think this is a great product for someone who wants to dream and have fun. I had no expectations of it being used for actual building purposes. If I come up with something that I'd like to eventually build, it will need to be done by an architect.

"Does not meet expectations", I was buying this tool to plan and finish my basement.
My handicap might be that I am used to CAD systems and had certain expectations. Here is my summary:
1. You can quickly draft an outline and modify the dimensions of the wall by dragging. But even simpler tools allow me to modify the dimensions just by clicking and changing the dimensioning values... cumbersome and not very intuitive
2. The outer wall exists as well as the insulation. Entering a frame with just one side of drywall? No Chance... unless you spend a factor x8 in price and buy the pro version --> Material list becomes pretty useless
3. Plumbing / enter preinstalled plumbing? No chance ... unless you buy the pro version
4. Walls not as high as the room to cover horizontal / vertical plumbing? No chance ... unless...
5. I put the window in the outer wall and added the drywall. In order to see the window I needed to add another window at the same place. Material list becomes useless
and so on....
Summary: You must have pretty low expectations when you buy this tool. Or you want to spend $ 450 for the pro version.
IMHO the videos are good for complete new construction projects but not for a finishing. The SW is not very intuitve.
The only good thing is the pretty good visualization and the 3D rendering.
I for my part finished the drawings in another low cost system and will sell this SW very likely again.
