Others say...
"Poorly manufactured" The protractor I received was defective in its manufacture. Product advertising describes and shows both a red degree scale and a red arrow. The unit I receved did not have the red scale and only part of the arrow was red. I contacted the manufacturer and they provided sympathy only, and no resolution to the problem except "return it." Thank you amazon.com for making return of this item painless! I will no longer consider Starrett for future tool purchases.
"protactor" My husband is a do it yourselfer and is very excited to use this protactor, he was not able to always mitre a corner to fit well but this instrument should help with that.
"12" protractor" I have in the past needed a protractor with these features that enable me to use my miter saw more effitiently. I am looking forward to using the protractor in the short future.
"quality" I was extremely pleased with the quality of the product. Not only was it much larger than I expected, but it was made of metal, not plastic as I had assumed.
"starrett prosite" For the price of this item, I expected that the numbers on the dial should have alinged more precisely.

What our customer's say!
"perfect", a must have for anyone installing trim or crown moldings. no gaps or funny looking corners. must buy.
"Starrett 505A 12 Pro Site 12 Inch Dial Protractor", Many homeowners I know who attempt basic trim work become very disappointed when their inside or outside miter joints are "open" requiring wood filler or caulking to make the joint acceptable.
They can't understand why their $300.00 plus miter saw is making such poor cuts. After all, most miter saws have a "stop" setting at the 45 degree angle. The problem (generally) isn't the home owner or miter saw's fault. The fact is, 95% of all outside or inside corners in our homes are not 90 degrees (or whatever angle they're supposed to be). They may have been close to the desired angle when the house was built, however over time, as the house framing drys out and shrinks, and/or settles on its foundation, the corner angles within the home change. Also sloppy sheet rock installation takes perfectly framed corners out of spec. In reality, they're more like 87, 88, 89, 91, and so on, degrees. For example is the outside corner is 88 degrees, the miter saw would be set at 44 degrees for a tight joint. A 45 degree cut would leave an open joint requiring wood filler.
The Starrett tool will correctly calculate the angle and indicate the correct miter saw angle. Personally I really don't need to have the tool tell me to cut 45 degree angles for a 90 degree corner -- Fortunately I'm still able to divide by two.
The tool extremely durable, made of what appears to be cast Aluminum. The scale however, a vital part of the tool appears to be a plastic covered paper sticker that scratches easily and over time will fade. Maybe that's why some people report the tool be "off" as much as 1 degree - the label wasn't placed on the tool properly.
For this price, I would expect a grid scale notched into the aluminum housing or at minimum a higher quality scale.
Non the less, it is a very useful tool if you do basic trim work.
For Crown molding I use the Bosch DWM40LK Miter Finder Digital Protractor/Angle Kit which calculates the correct miter saw angle and bevel based upon the corner angle (and Crown Spring) allowing me to lay the crown mounding flat in the miter saw for the cut. I'll rate that tool separately.
All in all, despite some issues with scale label quality, I recommend this tool for anyone doing basic molding jobs.
One additional piece of advice - When you receive the tool, hold it up against a framing square to make sure the tool is correctly indicating a 90 degree angle.
"Gotta have one.", I had one of these before but couldn't find it so I bought another. It really comes in handy when your doing crown molding. It saves you from going up and down the ladder a hundred times making trial cuts or wasting a piece of material because the walls aren't built at the angles they're supposed to be. It helps you look like you know what you're doing.
"Scale is way off", If you are looking for accuracy, look elsewhere. This scale is off by 1-2° which is unacceptable for anything but rough framing perhaps.
"Best layout and fitup protractor I have", Starrett 505A-12 ProSite 12-Inch Dial Protractor
I own a 'pro' design, fab. & welding shop--so, I've got at least 6 other protractors. However, upon seeing a write up by another fabricator, on Welding Web site--show and discuss this item---I bought it.
1-It takes the math and headscratching out of figuring mitre joint angles.
2-It's tight, not sloppy and big enough to use very easily for angle fitups and measuring during fitup.
3-It's a Starrett tool (and I have other pricey, Starett items)---which means quality.
4-I'm too poor be able to afford cheap tools.

"Excellent", This angle finder works great, it has a tight feel so the angle can be measured and the angle finder moved to the saw without losing the measurement.
"Piece of Junk", The scale was off by almost two degrees. I contacted Starrett and thoroughly discussed the problem with them. I sent the Protractor to them and they sent another one to me which was not correct either. I called Starrett again but couldn't get a guarantee that if I sent the second Protractor to them that I would receive one which was correct. The scales are a self sticking plastic that cannot be correct if they are off center when put on. This is another nice idea that hasn't been thoroughly thought out for production.
"Good and Accurate", Mine is calibrated correctly, just enough pivot tension. Yeah, it's big and long, but to get a more accurate angle, 12 inches is appropriate and the heavy construction means damage is minimal, unless used as a pry bar. Don't let the previous whiners and prima donna psuedo craftsmen spoil this tool. On a large baseboard job alone, it's worth the time savings. Inside corners can be rectified by a caulk artist, but outside corners are critical. I no longer waste trim, time or guess...
"Lot'sa uses", I've used my new Starrett Protractor to set up my table and cross cut saws as well as find that difficult angle for crown molding.
"Starrett Quality Takes a Nosedive with this Product", 50 years ago, my father, a watchmaker, told me that anything you own made by Starrett will be the best you can buy. I have a number of their products and have always agreed with Dad's assessment. Starrett lost it with this protractor. The accuracy is just not there. If you are doing rough carpentry work and need approximations, go for it, but if you are planning to use this protractor to set up anything in a quality home workshop, you better keep looking.
Disappointed!!
