"Rebate Reneger" I have to admit I didn't have a problem with loading the software on the Windows XP operating system. However, sometimes I do get an error message when I try to download an update. My main problem with McAfee is that they promote their products with mail-in rebate offers, then find some petty reason not to honor them. I upgraded from McAfee ver. 4 to McAfee ver. 8 and Firewall ver. 5. They claim that I have not proven my upgrade. I submitted the bar codes from the boxes of the old and new versions. It's not my fault that the box does not have MCAFEE printed on the bottom. It's their product. They should be able to read from the bar code. That's okay. I had read that McAfee operated like this. They don't have to worry about me purchasing their products and getting my hopes up that they will honor their own promotions.
"STAY AWAY" I would advise STAYING AWAY from all McAfee AntiVirus products. It hogs up to much resources on the computer. It makes way longer boot up time. And to make things worse.......They cut off my updates after only 8 Months. I paid for the 1 FULL Year of updates. I emailed them but they could care less. I am now using EZ Armor AntiVirus & Firewall. They work great and boot up time is way faster. STAY AWAY FROM McAfee !
"Simply did not work" I have used McAfee products for years and have always been happy with their performance, until I purchased Anti-virus version 8 home edition. I installed the application, and it would not update to the latest DAT files. I contacted McAfee help via e-mail and phone message and never received a response. In addition, all of the pop-ups and banner ads I received will installing the product and attempting to get help were really annoying. McAfee would do much better producing a quality product with real help, then with their "in your face" marketing. Very disappointing.
"ADWARE" Worst product ever. I instaled the products and I got the stuped Security Center which is a form of Adware if you look at it closer. It shows you index of security and shows you Spamkiller and Privacy service which when you install them only improve your index of security visualy instead of duing anything good. The pop ups on the mcafee site are so anoying. I would not recomend this product to anyone when you can purchase Norton Internet Security for the same price. McAfee is just a big disappointment compared to Symantec. I don't work for symantec nor am I related to them in any way but their product is better in any way compared to Mcafee.
"McAfee creates pop-up nightmare" Be forewarned that once your year's worth of free updating of virus files expires, McAfee ironically begins popping up repeat windows warning you of impending expiration, and then expiration, and this continues and even presents multiple pop-ups during one session. I've written them repeatedly and you might as well contact the Great Wall. I hate to switch but any company that does that to a paid customer exhibits brazen insensitivity to the whole spam nightmare. They're not the same company I thought they were, apparently.

What our customer's say!"No problems", I bought this program because I was having problems with Norton Anti-Virus. I had no problems with the installation. Once it was installed, it found several ad-ware viruses that Norton had missed. Since installation (about a 6-9 months now), my computer has not crashed or been infected by any viruses. I also have not had any problems with the bundled firewall program. I noticed people have had problems with the 2005 version. If I had to buy a different program, I would not use Norton, but would try PC-cillin. Instead of upgrading McAfee, I will just continue to subscribe for the virus uddates. "Novelll network user BEWARE", I bought this bundle thinking it was going to work out. I put on my 98 windows machine and it totally trashed some of my programs. It slow my computer down and it would keep freezing my computer. I got updated to a windows xp (With new computer, new network, etc,) thinking it would solve the problems since 98 was an older version. It installed great. No problems, it seemed to be working. Try to write to the server and nothing. My cyma software was not working properly, Couldn't save any kind of file to the server with either Word perfect 8 and 11. The tax programs would not download correctly and you couldn't update information from disks or cd to the tax programs. The whole time we thought it was a NOVELL network problems and kept having the computer technitian calling up to find out what was going on. After two months of frustration and trying everything under the sun, including disabling Mcafee, (which didn't seem to make a difference in the performance or the problems) we decided to try one more thing and once we took Mcafee complete out. EVERYTHING worked perfectly. NO problems what so ever. If you use a novell network, STAY away from this product. It will act like everything is alright with your c: drive but behind the scenes it's messing with your server and other programs. "Hmmm..McAfee", First off I was running a copy of McAfee VirusScan 6 w/Firewall 4 that came pre-installed on my new Dell. All was well for the first year until the 1yr DAT update subscription ran out. I found out that the VirusScan engine had now progressed to version 8. No big deal. I proceeded to download the updates (VScan/Firewall) online which was pretty painless. After upgrading I ran a virusscan and found lots of Adware! Not surprised! VirusScan gave me the option to delete/quarantine as it could not clean them. Word of advice. Don't delete, quarantine! Deleting hosed the LSP configuration on my system as removing adware apparently has a habit of doing! No LSP, no DHCP renewal (have broadband),hence no web access! Then you'll find out that McAfee offer free tech support via online chat room! No good for me as I lost web access! But the very polite customer service told me I can simply access their toll tech support for $2.95/min! Yeah right! McAfee's comment was 'All our competitors offer the same support' when I complained to customer service! I got the LSP layer fixed. Easy fix once you have access to the web (friends PC)! New software does run a lot slower. Older version I thought was more user friendly. And talk about McAfee trying to run the frighteners on you to buy the rest of their 'marketed' software! You don't need it! The McAfee is on a trial run! We'll see what happens! For all you new buyers out there thinking about buying, look elsewhere! "You do have options...", Buy an inexpensive broadband router such as the D-Link DI-604 (this is your firewall) and a copy of PC-cillin from Trend Micro (this is your virus software) and you're good to go. "McAfee has forgotten how to write software", I've used McAfee for years, and liked it better than Norton. However, Version 8 is an absurd step backwards. Unlike previous versions (and all other virus scanners I've seen) you cannot configure automatic scans to not scan network drives or specific directories. There doesn't seem to be a log of what was scanned so there's no way to check what has happened. The script blocker doesn't have any mechanism to specify some scripts as ok to run. Overall this is pretty ridiculous release.
Read this reviews before You buy..."I've never been so disappointed", I purchased this product and then had trouble installing it. I called the customer service line only to find that for technical assistance you must call a 900 number and pay $2.95 per minute. Then I decided to call the non-tecnical customer service line where I waited for more than an hour before handing up. Competition in this area is limited, but next itme, I'll find it! "You are now UNDER MY SPELL!!!!", This is horrible. I have been a user of McAfee products for the last 6 years now and have been reasonably happy. Until I bought this piece of junk (yes, I'm seldom this vociferous about my feelings for software). Anyway, in the past one of the things I liked about VirusScan was that it kept me, the user, in control of things. I bought VirusScan and ONLY used VirusScan. I disabled all the other fancies McAfee shipped with the product since I did not need them. NOW with VirusScan 8, I cannot uninstall (or even disable) Security Center. It runs and tells me things I am not interested in, takes up PC resources and pops things up when I least need them. I also tried to modify my update options to "manual" instead of automatic, but the software does not update DATs manually (gives some Registry Read error). Its as if they have got me under their spell (in keeping with the "Lord of the Rings") Anyway, this is the LAST McAfee product I am getting and I highly recommend you buy a Symantec product instead. Since I last wrote this, I discovered another abomination from McAfee Support itself. Even though there is an option for "manual update", one cannot actually update the DATs manually. One HAS to do so automatically via Security Center. So after one year, one HAS to buy another subscription to McAfee if one is to remain protected from viruses. Hope this helps.
"Big disappointment", I was a happy McAfee customer with my previous purchase - version 6.0. My update period ended, so I opted to upgrade to the current version - 8.0. I have been unable to get it loaded. The installation process hangs up. It is a known problem, they have a solution posted on their web-site. Evidentally, the old version does not completely uninstall, preventing the new version from installing. But the steps they suggest don't work. I tried their online chat support FOUR times. Each agent gave me additional steps to try - deleting more and more information from the Registry. It still doesn't work. I gave up. I am going back to my old version 6 until I can get Norton's software ordered. I don't do anything fancy on my PC. When software loads, I let it follow its default settings. So with this "standard" set-up, why don't installs work? What a huge disappointment.
"Internet (IN)Security???", I have pretty much had it with McAfee. I was going to switch to Norton (which I have on my other computers) but I have had it with Norton, too. Finally, I decided to upgrade my previous McAfee versions to this current version of VirusScan and Personal Firewall as I was concerned about uninstalling McAfee and then installing Norton. I have probably $25,000 worth of software on this computer and I wasn't willing to risk losing the entire system if something went wrong during this process. There is something about "don't change horses in midstream". Therefore, against my better judgement, I decided to stick with McAfee on this computer. Comments: 1) The McAfee upgrade was actually painless. (surprisingly after some of the horror stories reported in other reviews) 2)The virus scans are significantly slower using this newer version. It took about 2 hours for 25GBs of files. I see no impact on Internet browsing. (But I only have a 28.8K connection so problems may occur for highspeed connections?) 3)Automatic virusscans were not reliable. (Sometimes they ran, sometimes they didn't. Not good) This is more likely a problem with the Windows XP scheduler, however. 4) The firewall is a total security disaster (Hence (IN)Security). Why? I am extremely security conscious and I don't allow any programs to have unrestricted access to the Internet. I have to manually allow any and all program access. I can no longer do this with PF+5.0. Now, it is essentially, block all internet access for a specific program or allow it unrestricted access (forever, until you go in and manually delete the rule allowing unlimited access, which is a pain). Nothing in between. A good analogy: A stranger comes to your front door. You either decide to let him in or you don't. With PF+5.0, if you allow him in at all, you now also give him the keys and the alarm code and he has unlimited access to come and go into your house when and as often as he pleases. No onetime visits here. 5) The McAfee Security Center is the most egregious example of self-promotion I have ever seen. IF you don't have McAfee, you really just are not secure. BUY MORE MCAFEE PRODUCTS AND BE SAFE. Also, if you only have any other non virus/firewall McAfee products installed on your computer (Such as QuickClean, which don't require frequent updates) you are nevertheless continually getting popups asking you if you want to check for updates. I have done everything I can to disable these d*mn annoyances with no success. Maybe I can go to msconfig and prevent it from even loading? Anyways, other than INsecurity and ANnoyances, upgrading hasn't been the disaster that others have experienced. Additional (neutral) comments as of 2004-02-03 1) As far as I can tell, I have seen no anomalous Windows XP Pro crashes or system/program instabilities. (What a relief! (I'm not being sarcastic, just relief after other reviews!)) (For security, I use Windows fast user switching into an unprivileged account for normal use and I do see regular Windows crashes there but their frequency has not changed) 2) I have yet to get automatic virus scanning (ie scheduled scans) to work. Period. Every thing is set up properly (privileges/password/etc) but no luck. The only way I can get a full scan is to do it manually (as I am doing right now)) 3) Update process is 28.8K modem unfriendly as McAfee no longer gives you update file size before updates. (Ie, you may be browsing and it is ok for a 100K update but not a 5M update?) Ultimately, it appears this product either works (more or less) or it doesn't.
"Best internet security product", I have no idea why some people said the mcafee will crash their system. Mine works fine and great. It cathcs virus, worms and spyware program. The firewall plus is great and I always set it as tight security. It blocks suspect inbound and outbound activities. The mcafee old version firewall is no good, it crash the game, such as raven shield. Only the firewall 5.0 plus fixed this problem. Buy this bundle, it is a good deal in Amazon. Oh, remember update often. It keep you safe when you have boardband. Security check all the ports are invisible to outside world. I think those people with the problem on this software should check your computer OS, I don't think it is the problem on this product. One more thing. any anti-spyware or privacy service program will slow down your online game. Do not turn on when you play the online game. It is good enough to just leave the firewall plus 5.0 on. Trust me, I tested all internet security products and only these two can make me satisfy.
