Others say..."ReputationKiller"My subscription ran out on 4.0 so I went an purchased 5.0. After installation what I learned is this: they completely redesigned and destroyed a perfectly excellent product, and it won't run smoothly unless you are running a Pentium 4 machine. As far as I'm concerned this was the only product I liked from their product line and now they've just killed it. "Works If You're Willing To Be Patient"I recently downloaded the 30 day trial from McAfee for SpamKiller. I had a few minor problems in the beginning getting my email list set up so I wasn't filtering out family and friends. After reading the online help and following the directions (I use XP and full blown Outlook) I was able to filter out spam quite effectively. I have had no problems with the SpamKiller locking up my system or keeping me from getting email. I can understand the frustrations some previous posters have had but I have not had any major problems. I would recommend this product for most people but please remember you may need to be patient when installing and setting it up for the first time
"Flat out doesn't work" It doesn't support Secure Sockets Layer, which is required for my ISP. They don't tell you that before buying. I wasted hours, working this out for myself, contacting tech support, and after I explained to them what the problem was, they found it in their knowledge base. "Based on the information you gave us the problem is that SpamKiller doesn't support SSL. Is there anything I can help you with?" "Yeah, how about a refund?" Nope, that is a different department. So, non-functional product (with my ISP, at least.) And they weren't very appologetic, or quick with the refund. And the address that the tech gave me for sending feedback doesn't function either.
"What kind of spamfilter is this?" I recently installed Mcafee Spamkiller, which came with the Internet Security Suite. Upon configuration, it gave me messages asking to change my username to my full e-mail address, and incoming server to 'localhost'. Upon bootup, it said it was not protecting my computer. It did not filter but a few emails. I had to uninstall and reinstall and put my full email address as the username and 'localhost' as the incoming server during the 2nd setup and it STILL corrected me, and didnt filter anything. Its bad enough that there are corrupt spammers out there, but I dont need to be cheated by a company that is supposed to be protecting me. And the designers dont care. They just want $$$$
"THIS POS IS SPAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" First you have to install the spam portion of Mcafee PORTION that is nothing BUT SPAM ITSELF..... Then after your machine rewrites Eudora a couple of dozend times. Five reinstalls so that you can finally un-install this garbage. Hopefull you won't lose as much e-mail and time as I did AVOID THIS PRODUCT.. MCAFFEE YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED...YOUR PRODUCT THREE YEARS AGO WAS MUCH BETTER THAN THIS TANK I probably will never get a refund after a 20 min long distance call I hung up!!!!

What our customer's say!"You really need to read the user's manual", I purchased, installed, used, and reviewed all Amazon customer reviews prior to composing this review. McAfee Spamkiller. version 5, is rated 4.5 in most computer journals, but rated only 1.5 of 5 by Amazon reviewers. That's a big contrast. I used versions 4,5, and 6 and Norton's 2005 antispam also. I'm using McAfee version 5 now with Windows XP on a computer with 512 MB ram and a 1.6 GHz processor. I use Netscape 7.2 mail and Thunderbird Mail, both are Mozilla, POP3. I will not use Microsoft Outlook or AOL which contribute to spam. I run McAfee Spamkiller version 5 with ZoneAlarm, Norton AntiVirus, and Webwasher without conflicts. I used McAfee's free problem by email technical support option. I received a clearly written and accurate response within 24 hours. The pay-as-you-go telephonic support or the subscription based support ($40) costs more than it is worth. McAfee SpamKiller is OK, good enough, but over priced. It is more versatile than McAfee version 6 or Norton's anti spam/spam killer version 2005. Nevertheless, whenever I travel and my computer is dormant for several weeks and my mail is accumulating on the ISP server, my spam count drops to 10 percent. When I return from travel and turn on my computer and McAfee or Norton intercept my spam it starts a cascade of new spam even though the spam is never opened or replied and before I browse the Internet. In my opinion, there is something in the software that returns my now active address to spammers. It happens too often to be coincidence. Spam killing is not easy for any home-based user protecting against professional spamming software developers who are usually more competent than those designing the spam killing tools. The tools are out-of-date before they are provided to the public. Killing spam is constantly a matching of wits requiring thoroughly reading the user's manual and constantly tweaking your settings. No spam killer is "install and forget." In my opinion McAfee SpamKiller 5 provides more versatile anti spam tools than any other general use spam killing software and it works well with Netscape/Messenger and Thunderbird/Firefox. It works best only after going to your mail preference menu, server settings, and turning off (1) check for new messages at startup, (2) check for new messages every __ minutes, and (3) auto download new messages. Also turn off Instant Messenger. You have to do this because McAfee software designers will not design a compatible system. Otherwise mail and McAfee are fighting each other. Hence McAfee versions 5 and 6 are not worth the price asked. But , version 5 is worth the discounted price charged by resellers. If you insist on using Microsoft email products like Outlook, Instant Messenger, or using AOL you fight the spam battle with one arm tied behind your back and no spam killer will do much good. "This is worse than having nothing at all", Spamkiller is one of the worst pieces of software I have ever used (and now discarded). I didn't have the very latest version - bought mine in late 2003. It would never show which messages it had blocked but kept all of them (blocked and unblocked) on my hard drive in addition to the ones it sent to my email program. I had to clear out hundreds of files called something like "1234.eml" every week. Spamkiller gave me no indication of what it had blocked so I had no idea of "friendly" emails that were getting discarded. I've rated it 1 star because there is no lower rating. McAfee tech support was no use at all despite spending a couple of hours on the phone with them. "Virus Welcoming Committee a.k.a Spam Killer 5.0", It allowed viral spam to infect our harddrive, while at the same time blocking useful email. They should be paying us for what we went through. If you get a virus, you have to pay $50.00 for removal support, which costs more than the bogus product they're selling. Also, the program is just a set of rules for your computer to follow in email filtering. It is not a smart product. Doesnt block spam. "I'd give it zero stars if I could.", After three installs and uninstalls of this program, I've had it. Spam still gets thru, Outlook locks-up, same problems over and over. SpamKiller should be put to sleep. "kills spam, adds you to spamming list", we now know that exploits like webbugs etc are used in html to confirm "visiting a site." well in html email adding a webbug that includes your email address is a way to confirm the email address is live and valid and worse yet, that the email has been read. Spamkiller actually does this not just for the mail you kill but even for mail it filters and you never read. IE every message with a webbug returns a message to teh spammer that your account is live and that you read spam! You can not turn off this feature in either spamkiller 5.0 or 4.0. this is incredible! use this product and you will be added to every spammer's list, not only as a live email address, but as someone who opens their spam mail (even if you don't!)
Read this reviews before You buy..."What a POS, backed by useless tech support", Locks up FREQUENTLY (2-3x per day), requiring reboot to get it to work again (WIn XP machine). Tech support, in their infinite wisdom suggested that I reboot! Sheer genius!
"AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!", (Zero star rating if possible) If you have Outlook 2000, skip this product. It requires you have a MAPI e-mail account and not a POP3 account as most home computer users have. It seems to have a big history of crashes and unexplainable behavior. If you take the time to read the McAfee support board, you will see all the problems this product has. Avoid! Run away from this one! Burning your money would provide more value for you.
"Great product, but has room for improvement.", Alot of people who rated this 1 star[], and I suggest you not look at their reviews at all if you are just an average home user. For average home users, this program is an excellent choice. Now for improvements. 1) I'd rather not have to use the program outside of Outlook to send spam alerts to ISP's and email providers. Rather, I'd prefer if spam killer integrated more into Outlook like it says it should. 2) A more updated abuse email list for email and ISP's. Why should we have to do this manually? For a program that was around $20-30, there should be some sort of updated database on email and ISP abuse emails to send the spam to. 3) A more detailed information or disection of email headers so we can send the abuse report to the PROPER authorities. I think if we were able to do this, the spam would be cut down a little bit. Not significantly, since there is no governmental regulation on email spam (yet), but at least enough to get rid of annoyances. So other than an update with a few fixes and upgrades (that should be for free), this is a decent program that is alot better than the built-in rules that come with Outlook.
"It actually does work (for the most part)!", I have only have been using the program for about week, but have seen promising results. I usually receive approx. 30-40 pieces of spam a day. The SpamKiller 5.0 has actually filtered out most of the spam. If it does filter out something that is not spam, then the real e-mail can be easily retrieved and the sender's name could be added to a friends list to avoid future blocking. During the instillation process, the program only claimed to have noticed my seldom used Outlook Express mailbox and not my Outlook program, which I use for two POP3 accounts. The instructions are not much help with this issue, but the program somehow ended up working with Outlook in a Windows XP environment. Besides the confusing intructions, the other minor another annoyance is the McAfee Security Center that pushes the purchase of McAfee's newest virus scan--it will not recoginize an older verision that has been updated on a regular basis. (The Security Center can be easily ignored and it does not interfere with any programming.) Overall, the product does remove significant amounts spam in an unintrusive manner.
"Not so bad", I searched the web for spam filters and came up with a lot of hits, but I wanted something from a "big" name. Symantec didn't make their offering apparent on their website. So despite being a lifelong Symantec customer, I went with McAfee's SpamKiller. I downloaded it from McAfee's website on November 30th - long after 5.0 had been released. I installed it and promptly found that what I had was version 4.xx.xx which does not support multiple users in an XP environment. Their tech support confirmed I had an old version and didn't really seem concerned about the fact that I had downloaded it from THEIR site moments earlier. I was very disappointed and let McAffe know. They promptly refunded my $39.99 (yes, $39.99). I was even more "disappointed" (trying to keep this a "G" rating) when I found that I could buy v5.0 for $17 and change from Amazon. I ordered it from Amazon but kept the old version installed until version 5.0 arrived. I can't complain - the older version does what it says and filtered 80-85% of the spam "right out of the box" (or as downloaded as the case may be). I set up some custom filters and they worked great as well. My 5.0 arrived today and I installed it without incident on my XP machine with multiple users. Again, it does what it says. I do like the 4.xx.xx interface better, but you can still get where you need to with 5.0 - you just have to try harder. They just hide the complex stuff to appease the less technically savvy folks. I'm using Outlook Express in a networked environment and it works fine. I have an "unsupported" arrangement where other machines on my network access the Outlook Express message store on a dedicated server. Spamkiller is installed on said server which isn't really doing much of anything else. Perhaps this is why I don't perceive this software as being a drain on system resources? In any event, Spamkiller 5.0 works great and I'm happy with it. I can't give McAfee anymore than 3 stars because they sold me outdated software on their site. Jim
