"Price is way out of scope", Generally, I don't think a review should be based on price, but the current $52 cost is over 3 1/2 times the cost to order it directly from the manufacturer. This is obviously a pricing error and you shouldn't buy the adapter from Amazon until it is corrected and put more in line with every other online retailer ($11-$15).

Other than that...It's an adapter and it works. No problems with it.


"Great little adapter", I recently purchased the latest MacBook Pro, which omits the firewire 400 port. This adapter is just what I needed so that I can still plug my firewire 400 devices into a firewire 800 port. Works great and is well made.

"Excellent Product. Horrible Price.", I bought this product a while back, and it was exactly what I needed to make use the FW 800 port on the back of my computer. I don't use it anymore because I've since bought a FW 800 drive, but it did exactly the trick I needed.

... but it sure as heck wasn't $60. It would have to make coffee and do the laundry before I'd pay $60 for a simple adapter like this.

Look around. This should be in the range of $10, not $60.


"Rarely needed product. Arstechnica wrong.", This product is not needed. If you have a computer with just FW (FireWire) 800, just get the right cable to connect your FW 400 device.

Arstechnica just misspoke, saying that you need an adapter to use a FW 400 device on the new MacBook Pros announced last week that only have a FW 800 connector, linking to this product. You do not. You just need the right cable.

"This Adapter works fine.", I use a desktop and a powerbook MAC which have both 800 & 400 firewire ports. The 800 ports were unused because my peripherals are 400. This adapter allows the 800 ports to be used with 400 firewire peripherals without buying an expensive firewire hub. The product is well made and works as the literature states.

"chaining devices together ...", OK, Apple is ahead of everyone again with firewire 800. If you need a 500 GB external disk to receive footage from a digital film pack, you may find yourself needing to chain a firewire 400 production device into a system that was intended for firewire 800. This adapter is one of the simplest way to solve the problem.

"A Must-Have ", This is a must-have little bit of kit. I run Cubase 4 on an iMac. I prefer to use a firewire audio interface and the Sonnet FAD-824 allows me to run a Glyph external hard drive from the 800 port on the iMac. If I owned the world, this adapter would be included with every computer that had a firewire 800 port. It is a simple no-brainer solution.

"It just works...", I finally have access to that worthless little port! I can leave my iSight hooked up and plug in my external drives as well. Couldn't beat the price, either. With only USB one on this Apple, it needs all the usable high speed ports I can get. One of these days maybe Steve will consult me before some of these major hardware decisions which leave the end user out in the cold.

"Simple solution to a simple problem", This is a great little connector. It allows me to connect Firewire 400 drives to my Firewire 800 port. This gives me access to another port, which makes for faster data transfers, because I can have both channels working at the same time. There's nothing to go wrong. It's a simple connector that just works.
