"Exceptional gaming experience"
Granted, "The Return of the King" by EA Games is no Myst. It is not complicated to play. It does not puzzle your brain. It is fairly straightforward and easy to beat. What makes this game so special is not the thought or skill required to beat it. What makes this game special is the plane quality of it. The graphics are beautiful and the action is rendered exceptionally well. The controls are easy to use and the combo moves simple to learn. The levels are true to the movie and the book -- everything from the Fields of Pelennor to Mount Doom. The voice acting is excellent. The only downside is that the movie cut scenes that divide up each level get a tad on the annoying side and are the main culprit in the massive installation size, but they do add an "official" air to the whole game.

For the price, this game is definitely worth checking out. It's certainly not the thinking man's game, but it's still enjoyable to play. Again, very well put together and, while system requirements are on the high side, most newer systems should be able to run it well.

"Great Game - Easy to Play"
I'm not a gamer (AT ALL) but bought this game on a whim and LOVED IT. I was worried that it wouldn't work on my computer (a 2-year-old Dell with no sort of gaming gear except a large hard drive) but it worked fine!
It's easy to play and entertaining over the long term. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of LOTR - whether you're into gaming or not!

"friggin awesome"
i know this isnt helpful to anyone, but i want to brings this games rating up. it deserves 5 stars.

"The second best game in the world"
This is one fun game! I could play it for 9 hours. The graphics are good. I think that the levels are cool. One problem is that some of the stuff didn't happen.I wish the orc bodies didn't dissapear. It would make it look more like real life.

"Could have been great, but...", I'm a fan of the LotR's movies and really adore EA's Battle for Middle Earth 2. Return of the King has all of the earmarks of a great game, but is crippled by a few unpardonable flaws. I recommend it only to the most fanatical fans of the movies/books and those who have the patience to wrestle with this very frustrating game.

Gameplay: I think this game is best played with a gamepad, although it can be played with keyboard and mouse. It's the usual button-smashing adventure game. You get to fight battle sequences from the movies as one of the major good-guy characters (Aragon, Frodo, Gandalf, etc.). The game has some light role-playing elements such as leveling up and gaining new abilities. However, it is primarily an adventure game involving killing a lot of orcs. It's good, mindless fun for a while until you realize how many times you are replaying levels due to the difficulty. I'm not great at these kinds of games, but I'm pretty decent and persistent. But the difficulty of this game (even on "easy") is just outrageous. It wouldn't be so bad if you could save the game whenever you wanted or if the checkpoint saves were more frequent. But no. You could play though 20 minutes of gameplay and kill 199 orcs. However, because you didn't get orc #200, you have to restart the level again. I must have replayed the level with Aragon and the undead king over 30 times, and still couldn't beat it. It just makes no sense. I'm not one to give up on a game easily, but this one just became a chore by mission 4 or 5. A pity since it was quite fun in the beginning.

Graphics: Looks really good and captures the spirit and mood of the movies. The cutscenes are straight from the movies and blend in well with the gameplay. Character models are dated by today's standards, but still look decent. The camera is very erratic and can easily make the game much harder by swinging around to some funky angle. And you have no control over it at all.

Sounds: Everything is in order here. Great background music from the movies, voice acting is spot on, and special effects are believable.

Technical issues/documentation: Thin, but functional manual. The game was perfectly stable on my computer, although I never finished it. Overall, a well polished game.

Value: If you can get it for $10 or less, it might be worth a try. I would suggest playing the demo first, although it is easier than the game itself. Again, be forewarned: this is a very frustrating game due to the absence of a real save system. If you don't mind replaying a mission 5-50 times, go for it. Otherwise, save your money and time.

Pros:
+good production values
+nice graphics, music, and voice acting
+action can be intense and very reminiscent of the movies

Cons:
-absolutely ridiculous difficulty, even on "easy"
-no real save system to speak of

"This game rocks worth the money", This game is easy to learn the controls and master after a fashion. It is not just hacking and slashing through orcs and other bad guys, you actually have to strategise a bit and look for some help from your surroundings but all in all a pretty interesting game. I have not gone very far in the game but it is one of the best games I have ever played. IF you lose a few times just pick it up and try again

"Waste of time", Game has average graphics (I've seen better though), but that's about it. Gameplay is repetitive and becomes annoying quickly. You spend more time watching the storyline movies than playing the game. Very little flexibility in the game's plot and settings. An overall disappointment to say the least...

"THIS IS A GREAT GAME!!!", This is one of the best games I've ever played. I know some people say it's too difficult, but it's actually not too bad once you get used to it. You'll have to have some strategy too, because hacking and slashing all the time isn't going to work. For example, in Escape From Osgiliath, your goal is to run away, not stand and kill orcs. In that level, if you're out in the open, there's a timer and if you take too long to find shelter, you die. Using combos is a good idea too, especially with the King of the Dead. I was stuck for a while on that level, as it's one of the harder levels. So I found out that I could use combos! So I kept using Orc Hewer and soon beat him! Orc Hewer is one of the best combos available. You can use it to get to perfect mode quickly. Yes, the keyboard controls are a bit cumbersome, so a gamepad is recommended, but it's not neccesary, because I beat the game without one. Overall, this is a great game, and anyone who's a LOTR fan should buy this game!

"CHEATS DONT WORK ON LAPTOP", IF you are playing this game on a LAPTOP and you beat the game you now have access to the cheat codes. You are supposed to hold in the Left SHIFT CTRL and ALT and then punch corresponding numbers to use the cheats but on a LAPTOP when holding down SHIFT it makes the numbers become the symbols and you can't make it work. Its frustrating. i even had the NUM LOCK on and it still doesnt work. i think for inputting cheats they could have came up with something better in case of people installing the game on their LAPTOP.

"Cool Hack and Slash Marred by Major Flaws", And I actually bought this game twice...ouch! Once was as a gift for someone with a Mac, and once for myself on PC.

Had I known about the three major problems it has from seeing it on the Mac, I wouldn't have bothered to get it for myself, but alas, it wouldn't run on the Mac as that machine's a bit dated (the machine was almost three years old).

The problems this game has make it almost unplayable (at least on a PC not used as a dedicated game machine). Not only is this very unfortunate, but it's also a little strange considering the huge amount of effort that was put into the game's strong points: graphics, sound and animation. These are truely impressive. For example, the ghosts on "Paths of the Dead" dodge and move with surprising realism...well, despite the fact they're dead! Even the stride of the main characters has been faithfully reproduced. This is incomplete contrast with the game's three glaring flaws:

* Difficult and imprecise keyboard/mouse control

* Disfunctional autocamera

* No save function

This seriously leaves me to wonder whether any quality assurance was done on the PC port to test for overall playability beyond "o.k., it runs, ship it!" (This was originally designed as a console game.) It is virually impossible for someone to play this game and not notice these problems almost immediately. QA on the FX part of this game was obviously extensive...but what about playability?

The first problem (game controls), you can actually work around somewhat through practice, or pretty much completely by using a gamepad. So, o.k., that one's not fatal in and of itself. Still, this can sometimes leave you wondering if the character you are controling isn't a complete drunk.

The autocam behavior is more problematic. It can be quite frustrating to have boulders, walls and other objects come between you and the character you are controling during a battle, essentially making you fight blind. This can happen with opponents and allies as well, but at least they become semi-transparent so you can still have some idea of what you're doing. The camera--which seems to pay much more attention to providing a cinematic POV than the game player--also often does not let you see what your character is obviously seeing, which can result in nasty surprises, or just a plain inability to see where you are going/running. On top of that, the bad camera and character control actually add up. When the POV automatically changes, the character can unexpectedly start moving in a different direction, because character direction is determined relative to POV. Handy. This all makes the final flaw pretty much fatal....

This game has NO SAVES. That's right. No saves. At least not in a PC sense. Of course, the developers don't expect you to go through the whole game in one sitting (this is very considerate of them), but they DO expect you to go through a whole LEVEL in one sitting, however long it make take to get through it. Leave the field of battle before a level is finished and when you return you'll have to do the entire level again. Now, there are these areas in the game called "Checkpoints", but they DO NOT create a save file to let you return to that point in the game at a later session. They only let you return to the checkpoint if you get killed, but YOU CANNOT LEAVE THE GAME. Want to go to bed after finally defeating the King of the Dead? Can only get back to that NEXT WEEKEND? Well, you're going to have to leave the game running 'til then. Combined with the difficult controls and half-baked camera POVs, both of which can easily get you killed through no fault of your own, the inablity to "quicksave" is extremely frustrating. But the lack of at LEAST savefile generation at "checkpoints" is completely unforgiveable. Not to mention that even the "checkpoints" are pretty few and far between.

Given it's major flaws, one has to wonder, "How does this rate as a GAME in spite of its LotR 'skin'?" How would this game rate, with all it's strong and weak points, if it had been "The Adventures of the Billy the Bandit" (i.e., no connection with LotR)? Probably just 3 or 4 out of 10. It would have been noted in passing for its outstanding production values, then been left quickly and completely by the wayside because of it's lack of playability. And that's truely ashamed for a LotR title, especially considering that what's missing are really the smallest of things...but how important they are!

"BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", I am a thirteen year old girl, and this is my favorite game of all time. I love The Lord of the Rings, and I have been waiting for this kind of game for a long time. You are actually fighting the orcs, trolls, and mumakil-not just sending people to fight them like you would in a stragety game. Here are some things I particularly like about it:

First of all, the levels you go through are in order of the events that happened. There is the path of the wizard where you get to be Gandalf, the path of the king where you can choose between Aragorn, Legolas, or Gimli, and the path of the hobbits, where you can be Frodo or Sam. There are 12 normal levels, and two bonus levels at the top called palantirs (whoever has read the books/seen the movies knows what a palantir is).

One of my favorite things is that after you finish all the levels, you get to go back and do them again and you get to be WHOEVER YOU WANT. There are also three secret characters who get unlocked if you beat the game and you can be them, too. There are 3 settings-easy, medium, and hard. The first level gives you instructions as you go, and the easier levels are near the bottom and the harder ones are near the top.

As for the fighting-it's relatively simple. The left mouse button is speed attack (used for unshielded enemies), right mouse button is heavy attack (used against shielded enemies-don't use this too much or you will be vulnerable), you use the a,s,d, and w keys to control where you go, parrying (blocking other attacks) is q, holding down shift and pressing the left mouse button is ranged attack (arrows, throwing knives etc.) and there are also some keys that you only use occasionally, like tab is jump back, Ctrl is physical attack (punch, kick, push etc.) and F5 is the special ability-with each character it's different. But this is only half of the fighting.

The other half is combos. You can buy upgrades and combos with experience points you earn in the game by killing enemies. Combos are when you press the keys in a certain order and something completely different happens that is very useful against enemies at certain times. One that is particularly useful is Orc Hewer-it is left mouse button, left mouse button, right mouse button. It is a powerful attack. There are different levels your characters can upgrade to and buy more upgrades. The upgrade-buying stops at ten, but the character can go up to level twenty (but it takes some time!).

This may all seem confusing at first, but when you play it for a while you get it all figured out and then you will appreciate how wonderful this game is. I know I have. If this game seems violent to you by the reviews, don't worry-it's not as violent as it sounds. If you love The Lord of the Rings and computer games and have a little patience and an open mind to this game, you will LOVE it. I guarantee that.

Happy Playing!

"Download This Adaptor If You Have An Intel Graphics Card!", I've had this game for about a month now, and I've been complaining about it until I found this patch download.
When I first tried to install the game, it said that I needed to update my graphics card and I got really pissed off. A few weeks later, I found right here on Amazon, a review with a website to make the game work.
(...)
Now the game works fine and I'm happy. I gave this product three stars because of the trouble it has caused me, but at least there is a solution.

"A great game!! quite shortlasting", This game really gives the same fealing that the movie gave, with fast paced fighting a nice combination of moves which can be won through a levelling system. The game is so realistic, the characters look real the game soundeffects are straight from the movie and it is Co_op!!!!! If you are a fan of lord of the rings then this is a great game. Such a good game the only downside i think is that its a little short but the enjoyment whilst playing the ten or so levels with an armment of wicked abilities and swift movements should take over that fact of the game, must buy for lord of the rings fans and a great game otherwise, gets four thumbs up enjoy!!

"DON'T GET THIS GAME UNLESS YOU HAVE A GAMING COMPUTER!", FIRST OF ALL, LORD OF THE RINGS IS AWESOME, BUT DON'T GET THE GAME FOR PC UNLESS YOU HAVE A GAMING COMPUTER. I DID, AND I DON'T HAVE A GAMING COMPUTER, AND IT CAN'T EVEN FINISH INSTALLING THE GAME BECAUSE IT SAYS I NEED DIRECT3D WHICH IS SOME WIERD EXPENSIVE PROGRAM AVAILABLE FOR GAMING PC'S. IF YOU DO GET THIS GAME, GET IT IN THE "EA GAMES COLLECTION," A COLLECTION OF FIVE GREAT GAMES FOR JUST TWENTY BUCKS! THESE GAMES DON'T NEED DIRECT3D (EXCEPT RETURN OF THE KING, DUH!) AND INCLUDE LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING, NEED FOR SPEED: HOT PURSUIT 2, 007: NIGHTFIRE, COMMAND & CONQUER: RED ALERT 2, AND SIM CITY 3000. I GAVE LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING TWO STARS BECAUSE I HAVE IT FOR GAMEBOY ADVANCE, AND IT'S A PRETTY GOOD GAME, JUST DON'T GET IT FOR PC.
