"DOA"
I ordered the Sony RCDW500C disc player recorder based on the extemely positive experiences I continue to have on Amazon, and it was the best price I could find on the internet. Unfortunately the unit arrived pretty much DOA. I wrote to Amazon and they gladly took the unit back and refunded the whole amount. Great job! I subsequently purchased a similar unit from a local electronics dealer. It is a great unit.

"Better Than Expected"
I was very hesitant to buy the SONY RCD-WD500C due to the mediocre reviews that I read concerning the product. The biggest concern with other consumers was the confusing owners manual. While it is somewhat detailed, and a bit vague in some areas, I was able to negotiate it fairly easily. If you are a total novice, it may take you longer, but if you are used to dealing with separate stereo components, you'll do fine. It also helped immensely that I went into BEST BUY (Where the unit was priced $128.00 more by the way) and was able to see one up-close and personal. The main detail that is not explained, or pointed out at all, is the fact that this unit has a volume level control. This is an extremely important feature! When recording from different CD's, records, whatever, sound levels can vary greatly. This is not an issue when using this unit due to the volume level control that can be adjusted for each song. This enables you to make your "Homemade" CD's and maintain a consistent volume level from song to song when your CD is played. It will also burn from a CD onto a blank in accelerated time due to the high speed dubbing feature. If you have cassettes, CD's, and a collection of vinyl albums, this unit will do the trick. I'm extremely pleased that I purchased it. If you're into making your own mixes, this unit will not disappoint.

"Worked for a year, then PFFFTZ"
I've had this for two years, using it to make live recordings of our church services. It worked reasonably well, although we had 5% - 10% disc recording failures. Two features turned out to be very useful: fade-in/fade-out, and auto-track creation.

Alas, after 24 months I suddenly started getting many bad discs. Cleaning the burn optics didn't improve things. Eventually the recording function quit altogether. Sony was no help, and frankly their technical support in the U.S. is idiotic. They wouldn't help diagnose anything, insisting instead that the discs must be bad. I bought $100 in discs just to prove them wrong. Then their only offer of "repair" was to exchange my unit for a refurb with no warranty for $175! I pointed out that these things are available NEW on Amazon for $200, but they would not offer any other options.

Based on other reports I've read in Amazon and elsewhere, Sony has a serious QC problem with this product's disc recording section. The mechanism is subject to jamming (we frequently encountered this), and the laser seem to be overdriven, resulting in early burnout. Sony won't stand behind the product for repair, and I've since learned that even had I purchased the extended warranty I would have only been offered the same zero-warranty refurb unit.

I'm going to replace this unit with the less feature-rich, but highly rated and apparently sturdy EAC CD-RW880.

"happy customer"
Very happy with product and service.
Shipped in timely manner. Arrived perfect.
Could not be happier.

"Sony RCD-W500C Disc player/recorder"
Very nice product; easy to connect and set up. Only wish is that it had a programmable timer to turn it on and off similar to a VCR.

What our customer's say!

"Remark", On the Sony RCD-W500C/W100 I bought one about a month ago and have been pleased with it. I am able to record from CD to CD even thou I have not figure out how to adjust the volume while recording from CD to CD, and from Tape to CD which I can control the volume when recording from Tape to CD. I agree with everybody else on the instruction book that it's really confusing. So before you start read it over and over. I eventually will figure out how to set the volume when recording from CD to CD but I hate to mess with what I am able to do now considering all the bad feedback on this recorder.

"Bought another one", This player recorder is really good, I use it every week at our church to record our praise service. We now have two, one for each sanctuary. It took a little bit to get through the instruction book, but once I mastered it, it has all of the functions I need. When you are recording live the make next track function is very useful to create breaks for the next song. The only thing I do not like is when nothing is happening it stops recording or creates lots of tracks, I now control that through the pause button.

"Great, once you get through the manual", I previously owned a Sony CD recorder with which I was very happy, but it was damaged in a move from one state to another. I bought the RCDW500C because I figured it would be similar, which it is, except for having more drawers. There are a few other minor differences, but it essentially works the same. Unfortunately, I hadn't tried to make any CDs in a while so I'd forgotten some of the basics, and I have to agree with many of the people who have already mentioned that the manual is poorly and confusingly written. Also, I found the directions on how to connect a turntable or other outside element to the RCDW500C to be lacking and I had a little trouble doing that. Otherwise, it has performed well and I have made several fun compilation CDs so far. Once you get the basics down, this recorder is fairly easy to use.

Just incidentally, I initially inquired at both Best Buy and Target about CD recorders, and the 20something clerks had no idea what I was talking about. They insisted that what I wanted was a burner for my computer or something to hook up to my iPod. I'm not sure they knew what stereo components are, let alone a turntable.

"horrible", i hate mini disc and by the way people this is not from sony's quality days sony hasnt been good since 2002 get an old sony cassette deck for recording thats top notch it will work ten times better then this i guarentee i gave this a try and sent it back it wouldnt work for me at all

"pretty good", Machine does what I wanted. Transfers old cassette tapes to CD's. One drawback seems to be with my DELL computer furnished hardware/software. The hardware/software will not recognize the CD's as a CD. My older computer, with NERO software, does recognize the CD as an audio CD and allows me to create another CD that is recognized by the new DELL computer. The CD's created on the machine will play on other players. The other drawback is that one has to purchase "music cd's" in order to record on the machine. 'R' CD's won't work. However, the 'R' CD's work fine with the NERO software.

"Excellent Value", I purchased this to replace a Phillips recorder that became useless. The Phillips was not the best model but lasted long enough to pay for itself. This Sony worked well right away and has a nice feature of being able to adjust volume while recording. I love it and the price was terrific !

"Pretty Good Overall", The first unit I got worked about 3 weeks, then had trouble finalizing discs and eventually stopped functioning. Amazon rushed me out another unit as soon as I sent the other one back so I had very little down time.
Amazon was a pleasure to deal with in this respect. I have used the unit for a while now and have borrowed the same unit for friends before so I am quite famaliar with it's quirks. Some CD burners insert a small gap between tracks where there is not supposed to be one and this can be annoying, this burner does not. It puts on the CD whatever is on the disc, and gets Top Marks for it's performance. Makes great copies from direct digital, and from analog sources as well. I put old records and tapes onto CD with great results. It does a better job than any compueter I have used. Sometimes for no apparent reason it will be unable to finalize a disc and it will have to be redone. This happens on a regular basis with every one of these machines I've used which is 4 in all.
Overall a good performer, but can be a bit tempramental.

"Sony RCD500C CD Recorder", The Sony RCD500C is the ONLY cd burner to own. If you aren't familar with Sony products then you owe it to yourself to give this piece of equipment a try. I have had Sony stereo products before and they stand the test of time and give you your money's worth. If a cd burner is what you need then there is only one on the market to own --- the RCD500C. Need I say more?

"Sony RCDW500C CD Recorder Review", This is an excellent CD Recorder--I have converted several cassettes to CD with great sounding results! It is easy to use and you can be recording in no time at all. Item was shipped promptly and I received it a few days before I even expected to!!! Excellent Service!!!

"Great product for the price!!", If you are looking in the market for a good quality CD burner look no further! I have had this Sony almost a month and am pretty impressed. I use it mainly to record my records to CD's. The SBM feature really sharpens the overall sound of the LP and cleans it up well. I must admit, the manual is a bit confusing to read at times, but if you don't mind using a "trial-and-error" type of practice, you'll do fine! Overall, the product performs great. I would highly recommend it to anyone. One final word of advice...when you decide to purchase this, make sure you buy audio cd-rw cd's. You won't waste your cd's when you make a mistake and have to throw away a cd with only 1 song on it!
