"A Complete Mess" What do you do in Max Payne 2? You walk from room to room shooting enemies in slow-motion dives. Oh yeah, and there's a competent story and some cool dream levels thrown into the mix. Now I'm all for mindless shooting (Especially when the enemy AI is as good as it is here) but a number of serious flaws suck the fun right out of this PC port.
1. Load times- Around 45 seconds everytime you start a new level or die and have to respawn. And you will die often, so even though you can save at any time, it's annoying when you hit a difficult section of the game. Picture this: Die, wait 45 seconds to reload level, die within two seconds again, wait another 45 seconds, repeat ten times. Aggravating, to say the least.
2. Save System- Completely f-ed up, it never, ever saves automatically, and saving manually is one of the most tedious processes I've ever encountered in a video game. Since you should save alot, this is not a good thing.
3. Framerate- It's never smooth, even in a small room with no enemies, and during heated firefights it slows down to around 5 fps, absolutely no exaggeration there. In these moments you just move the analog stick and hold down the fire button, and the game's auto-aim feature that makes all your flying bullets somehow hit an enemy, no matter how off you are, does the rest.
4. Graphics- This game looks like crap. Everything is too dark, textures are pixelated like mad, and it just isn't up to par with even first generation PS2 titles.
5. Audio- Skips alot.
6. Other problems- Game freezes for a few seconds whenever transitioning to a cutscene, switching weapons requires you to take your thumb off the analog stick, leaving you vulnerable if you run out of ammo in the midst of a shoot out and need to equip a different weapon.
Basically everything good about the PC version is either ruined or missing altogether in this barely playable port. This game is a trainwreck, stay away, it costs about the same as a roll of toilet paper for a reason. Best used as a coaster for your icy beverage. I give it a...

"A Few Problems, But Still Very Fun Sequel to a Great Game." If you're a hardcore action fan like me, chances are you've probably heard of Max Payne. It combines elements of John Woo films and film noir graphic novels. Some people may not like the film noir style or graphic novel look, but I think it's very unique and stylish. Now the sequel, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, improves on it in every aspect. I understand that of course the game is going to run and look better on Xbox and PC. It probably does, but that didn't stop me from buying it for PS2. The graphics are both good and bad. The environments are decent and the character models could be better save for Max Payne, Mona Sax, and Vladimir. Max no longer has that stupid sneer on his face. Voice acting is pretty good, but it tends to skip every now and then. Controls are pretty much the same as the first, except now you can pistolwhip or throw grenades with a weapon equppied. The Bullet-Time feature has been improved and the sequences when reloading in Bullet-Time are awesome, looking just like a top-notch action movie. Don't let the love story theme stop you from purchasing this. It's a very good story and some levels let play as not only Max Payne, but Mona Sax, but she basically plays the same as Max, which is or isn't a bad thing necessarily. Also, the dreaded nightmare sequences are on here, but they're not as hair-pulling as they were on the first. These are short and playable. My only complaints and why Max Payne 2 didn't score higher with me is that unfortunately, the Xbox and PC version are both graphically and technologically superior to the PS2 version. Also, it's a bit too short. But these problems don't hurt the game that terribly much as it's still very fun and just as good as the first if not better. I give a 4 out of 5. Semper Fi, Carry On.
"Not worth the money" This game is not worth paying for. If you played the first game then you have played this one. It is true that there is a new story and there are some new gun configurations but the gameplay and graphics were not improved at all. The whole bullet time thing is not enough of a reason to purchase a game. When I went to sell it back they wouldnt take it so i basically had to pay them to take this joke of a game. Waste of time and DVD discs.
"Where's The Beef?" *** SPOILER ALERT ***
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
First off, I own the original Max Payne for the PS2 and loved it, so when I saw the billboards for it (I couldn't go two blocks without seeing one) I naturally was really looking forward to it.
And then I bought it, and then...well...for me, I had a hard time playing the game. Or, to be more accurate, working up the desire to play it once I got it. Everything that was in the original was in here, along with a few extras, such as switching between Max and Mona, as well as having computer-controlled cannon fodder accompany Max every now and then.
Maybe that's it: maybe they put too much of the original in this. The controls were the same, the graphics quality was the same, everything was the same. Normally in a good sequel, there are noticeable improvements and/or changes (how the Final Fantasy people do it I'll never know). Maybe that's what this game really needed.
Or was it the plot? In the original, the emotional weight of the plot, of Max avenging the murder of his family, was almost palpable, but in this it wasn't there. Watching Max trying to sort out his feelings for Mona while trying to figure out who's behind a power struggle within the Inner Circle just didn't resonate with me.
Anyway, I see a Max Payne 3 in my future. I just hope it gets a bit more beefed up.
"What's the Deal?! I Still Like it..." ...but I've never seen the Xbox or PC version of the game. I picked it up cos it was cheap as heck used and I've heard it was good stuff. I'll admit the graphics aren't the best and are exactly like MP1, maybe a little better. But still, this is definitely a solid game and the story is great like the first game and it has the cool dialogue too, more modes to play, the bullet time is better and it's just as good as the first game.
My only problem was it was too short, but it was worth 12 dollars!

- Team up with the beautiful and deadly Mona Sax from the first game, as you control her intense sniping missions
- All-new Bullet Time features -- the more enemies you kill the faster Max moves
- New fighting moves and new weapons, like the MP5 and the twin Desert Eagles -- plus Max can equip grenades and Molotov Cocktails, and throw them while shooting
- Advanced AI and superior graphics bring this twisted tale of revenge and murder to life
It's better to buy this one too...

What our customer's say!
"way worse than the first!!!", I bought this game for $1 brand new and much more would not have been worth it. I loved the first Max Payne. The story and game play was great and challenging and long. this one had a terrible story and they changed a lot of things to be worse than the first. the weapons are much worse, and Max isn't as ironic and funny. there is basically no plot, you just play missions. In one cut seen Max gets shot point blank in the head and gets up with only a headache!!! the only reason i gave it two stars is because it was still kinda fun to kill bad guys and i got it so cheap. this game definitly does not live up to the first and very much disapointed me. If you havent played the first one i definitly recommend it but don't waste your time with the sequal
"Better than original Max Payne", This is a dark and deep game that I enjoyed greatly. It's exciting, it has interesting twists, and it's a very good shooter at it's core. The locations you play are great. The sound is great. I had no problem with the movements of the players. You get to play as Max and Mona. I put it up with one of the best games of it's genre.
Bring on Max Payne 3!
"What a terrible dissapointment...", So, if you've played the original MP you know how extrordinarily beautiful and dark and twisted it was. So, as usual you anticipate the follow up. This installment, is a shoddy, trashy version. The graphics look like a PS1 title, the story is boring. The deep save screens are terrible. Also, since you spend more time watching and hearing the graphic novel than playing the game it gets frustrating. If you don't save every two seconds and you die, you have to watch all the cutscened (boring as they are) all over again. You can skip them, but the time it takes to load the game after you skip them is just as long as watching them. There is no violence in this game.. The A.I. is terrible. The bullet time and dodging is okay, but not as stellar as the first. I'd skip this one, it's not worth it. There are rumors of a Max Payne 3 that are promising to deliver because even the company said they were dissapointed in how this game turned out. SO maybe we'll have that to look forward to.
"Quite Payneful", This game is pretty cool. But Not as cool as the first. The first addition has better graphics in all.but this one the audio isnt so great.Im a HUGE Max Payne fan.But the first had more action, lots more.
"Good on the PS2, but not great as the PC!", The story is engrossing, I have to admit that I really like this game. But there are a good amount of problems, A) Too few levels and the levels that exist are too short. B)Graphics are avg at best and C)the jumping/falling off ledges so frequently gets tiring.
But the pro's do outweigh the cons. A) Great sound, B) A deep storyline, C) Cool guns, D) Some of the levels will really make you think. The bottom line is that if you like this game, get the pc version! You can get 35 more levels on it!!
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy..."Awesome,but...", I think this game should have a "Warning adult content" on the front cuz sum 7-year old is going to buy it and thier parents will get upset cuz they thinck its sum game for 7-yr.-olds but its not.But who care(s)!This game is awesome!Mona is so ****ing hot! "Some mature rated things were taken out of this game.....", this versian of max payne is not very good. I played this at a friends house even though I have max payne 2 on my computer, and they took out some lets say "Adult" cheats.... Yes thats right there is something in the pc versian of max payne 2 that the x box and ps2 versian dont have. Mona in full Frontel Nudity.....Yes If you saw a brief scene with mona in the shower that is all you will get in the ps2 and x box versian.....But..In the pc versian there is a cheat were you can play mona with nothing but her gun if you know what I mean. And every thing is detailed in her body including her t**s and other places you dont want your 14 year old to see.. Basicly the pc versian of max payne 2 is the original MATURE RATED versian, but the ps2 and x box dont have that cheat. The graphics on the ps2 dont match up the awsome graphics of the pc versian. Bottom line is if you wanna see great graphics and great game play...not to mention explicit nudity...than get max payne 2 on pc than xbox and ps2. It's your choice.
"Severely disappointing port to the PS2", The PC version of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne managed to improve on the first game in some areas and was vastly enjoyable overall, however this Playstation 2 port of the game is severely disappointing. A noticibly terrible frame rate, blurry textures, missing sound effects, an even worse save system, and ridiculously long loading times plague what could have been a stellar game. The storyline, plot twists, and even the once mediocre graphic novel-esque cut scenes are the game's few saving graces, along with the run 'n gun bullet time action that was so enjoyable in the first game, but in the end Max Payne 2's flaws outweigh it's strengths. It's a shame more time wasn't taken to make Max Payne 2 something as memorable as the first game; I really wanted to like this game despite it's flaws, but they're just too much. All in all, Max Payne 2 is still worth a rental for fans who dug the original, but don't expect anything at all great from it.
"An interesting idea, but not good enough", As much fun as running in slow mo, and diving while firing with cinematic flourish, can be, Max Payne 2 is, quite frankly, an exercise in frustration. The game has numerous good points, but in the end, those good points are weighed down by what can be a rather plodding, frustrating and monotonous game. To give Max Payne 2 its due, there are positives that need to be mentioned. The environments are amazingly detailed, and Max is able to interact with most of it (though after a few times, turning on and off a water faucet loses its charm). Additionally, the game makes use of audio cues, providing another level of realism. The enemies are difficult, with good aim and a penchant for dodging and surprising Max. And, the game features a number of slow motion action options, including so called "Bullet Time" which not only gives Max an edge but can provide for some visually interesting sequences. Visual effects are without a doubt this game's forte. Visual effects though, can only go so far before a player asks for more, and it is at this point at which Max Payne's defeciencies become obvious. While the environments are beautiful, they are in the end repititive. There is none of the free movement available in Grand Theft Auto. If Max is placed in a building, then you're stuck in that building. In the end, the environments seem to blend together. Additionally, the levels themselves are often the same. Max is asked to do the same type of activity repeatedly. The second major problem is actually two problems interlinked. It is at time very difficult to figure out exactly what Max is suppoused to do. At times, cues as to the correct course of action are unavailable, and players can find themselves trapped in certain levels, with no way to advance. While some players may enjoy the challenge, the agravation of having to reload one's game repeatedly is accentuated by exceptionally long load times, often upwards of 15-25 seconds. When you're having trouble getting through a paticular level, having to wait that long repeatedly is annoying. Additionally, the game has no ability to reload to the beginning of a level. Indeed, if you die without having saved your game for several levels, you are doomed to go back to the last point at which you saved, regardless if that maybe one, two, or several levels before your current location. Finally, at least for me, the tone of Max Payne was a problem. This game is listed as a film noire experience, but even film noire had a certain degree of levity. While there are certain elements of humour, on the whole I found the tone of Max Payne to be so dark as to be depressing. It strongly effected my enjoyment of the game. Overall, visually interesting, but once you get past the looks, there is little there.
"OK, but very repetitive and very difficult", Not what I expected it to be. It becomes more and more difficult as you play, to the point where the fun just stops. Quite repetitive. Repetitive is one thing, but repetitive and extremely difficult was a bit too much for me. I figure I may have gotten just past the half way point. Where she and Max are fighting together and you are controlling her and after many many hours of trying I couldn't keep Max from dying. Just simply too repetive and difficult for me to enjoy. If you're an extreme die hard at finishing games you may *ENDURE* it. Believe me, that's what you'll be doing from start to finish. I enjoyed the first Max, but the second is simply tooooo much.
