"Big letdown"
I'm not a big action gamer (obviously since my last game review was for Barbie Princess & the Pauper for my daughters) but sometimes I try something new. Pirates of the Caribbean looked interesting and, hey, I love Captain Jack, so why not? There was a lot of potential for this to be a very fun adventure, but it was only a big disappointment.

The manual is almost completely useless. I read it carefully and gained very little insight into how the game is played. There is an onscreen tutorial character, but he's almost as useless as the manual since all he does it take you on a three-stop tour of the first town and give some very non-helpful sword fighting lessons. He shows you where to buy supplies, get repairs, and hire a crew, but then you're on your own. The manual hinted at quests and deserted beaches on the islands where you could find treasure, but you have to figure it all out by yourself. There are lots of buildings with locked doors but not even a hint at what's behind them, or even how to find a key.

Maybe its my computer, but the other characters all fought faster than mine, even though I was pushing keys as quickly as I could. I died many, many times and it got very frustrating. The worst part though - and this is what earns the one star rating - is that there is absolutely NO tutorial or learning period for sailing the ship. None...zilch! I was still working to get the camera angle right and a pirate ship or a storm would swoop in and sink me, before I even got out of port. Ridiculous and very frustrating!

Thank goodness I previewed this from the library. I'd be very, very ticked if I'd wasted money on this game. I guess I'll go back to Barbie.

"Great game for Sea Dog fans"
I want to make clear that this is essentially Sea Dog's 2 and has little or nothing to do with the movie Priates of the Caribbean. However, if you want a down to earth, well rounded, ship/land based naval game set in the sixteenth century; POTC will deliver.

You begin the game as an unknown freebooter with a small ship. You follow the onscreen script as a sort of tutorial and learn how to move about on land, fight with a sword and pick up items. From there you disembark from your ship with the choice of doing pretty much whatever you want. You can choose to deliver cargo as a trader or fight for one of the five nationalities (six including Pirate), or anything else that can make you some "coin".

Much of the game play is similar to SD1 and the controls are almost identical. Contrary to what some may say, I found the controls to be rather simple and easy to learn although bothersome to change. Character relations with people grow throughout the game and your reputation will change based on the choices you make. For example, if you deside to play the game in a cut-throat fashion, killing all who step in your path and plundering every ship you see, you will begin to be feared and this will have an effect on those you talk to.

The learning curve is steep but add's an element of realism to the game. You need to use your judgement when traveling at first or risk being attacked by pirates. The graphics are astounding, showing every ripple in the water and every drop of rain. Sunsets are moody and filled with emotion, it is really something to see. Ships will now have a crew bustling around on deck although their animation is somewhat blocky and pre-mapped (it all looks the same after awhile).

The soundtrack is great for anyone whose a favorite of those long classical scores (i.e. Master and Commander) and will change with your environment. You can now get ambushed in the city and will have to defend yourself with sword, knife, pistol, or whatever else you happen to have. Items are abundant throughout the game. Some give you skills, others for combat but you can view them all in the (albeit clumsy) inventory menu.

Unfortunately the game has some downfalls. Character interaction sometimes seems a little rushed and the game has some issues with bugs. The Bethesda website devoted to POTC is a joke and hasn't been updated since the game shipped to stores and no official patch has been released to the public. This is where my 3/5 star rating comes from.

However now for the best part of POTC, the mods. A number of websites have posted mods for downloading, one in particular is called the "Build Mod". It incorporates an array of upgrades such as new ships, wearable clothing, 100's of new quests and characters to interact with, and the ability to change the character you play as (you can now be Johny Depp, Will Turner, or a ton of others). Ontop of this you can now berth ships at islands and feed your crew so they don't mutany. If only this mod had been released with the game, then it deserves a 5 star rating.

Bottomline: POTC is a great addition to the Sea Dog's line but falls short of being as good as it could've been. If only Bethesda could have released a good patch for the game or an expansion, fortunately the player created mods have solved most of the problems and actually added some elements. For fans of Sea Dogs, there is no other choice.

"Game by itself is buggy, but there are some great mods!!!"
Like many other people have said before me, this game (by itself) is very buggy. You will have to deal with lost save files, abrubt crashes and other issues if you play this game as-is out of the package.

But there is HOPE! There have been some great 'mods' released on several forums that not only correct the bugs but also add new characters (like the Johnny Depp movie character), new missions, and new weapons. Check out the Pirates Ahoy site for more info.

By itself this game is maybe two stars. With the easily installed mods...it's a 5 star game!

"Pirates of the Carribean"
I found this game to be one of the most difficult, most poorly documented and least intuitive games I ever played.

You start off the game with a crewmember to lead you through the start of the game. From there, you continue on your own. There is no primer on how to sail a ship. There is a minimal trainer on sword fighting but little feedback on how you're doing so you can modify your actions.

After getting my ship sunk in a storm twice, getting sunk by random ships attacking me three times (including just showing up at my home port)and getting no feedback or instruction on how to survive those events or how to avoid them, I gave up and quit the game.

"This Game Is Like My Second Life"
If I had to choose a second life to live I would choose the life of one of the pirates in this game. Everything from the thrilling battle scenes to the great soundtrack is amazing. after i beat it once i just fooled around in the pirate world wich is just as fun as following a story line. the only difference is your creating your own story line. if u liked the movie, BUY THE GAME!!!!

What our customer's say!

"How can you all say that!", Great game, once the controls were mastered. Extremely open-ended with a LOT of gameplay. Graphics are seamless and wonderful. Ship battles are exciting and a real challenge. Encountering storms is the most challenging aspect as it is difficult to master sailing in them.

All in all, with the amazing graphics, many side quests, customizable characters, and overall fun factor, this is a great game if you have the system to run it.

"Worth it, with some work--", The game was relatively enjoyable as it comes from the box. It was engaging enough that I played the whole way through it to see how the story unfolded, even though it was a bit cheesy and the game itself considerably buggy and quite obviously unfinished. The gameplay itself was decent, although a bit repetetive. At sea, however, the graphics are impressive enoug that simply watching the ships cut through the waves is reason enough to play. The word majestic comes to mind--insofar as it can be applied to a video game.

It is important to note--for you Depp fans--that there is no Jack Sparrow in the game as it ships. Also, the game has very little to do with the movie. It was originally developed as a wholly different game, until being bought by Disney.

Now what I consider to be the best part of this game is the modding community around it. Google "POTC Build Mod" and you will see what I mean. What it is is an extremely well developed mod that significantly alters the game and adds a huge amount to it. The features are too many to list, but if you get this game I strongly suggest you get the mod. The difference is enormous, and the mod alone justifies buying the game.

"Beware of Bootleg copy put out by a UK company called UBI Soft Exclusive", I have played Pirates of the Caribbean on Xbox, and I really enjoyed the game. But as you advanced to higher levels of play, the Xbox would lock up. So I was wanting to but the Bethesda's Pirates of the Caribbean PC version. Its is the same game. I recently purchase this NEW game from a 3rd party in Amazon.com. When I got the game, I was surprised by the cover, it had a different company name, of UBI Soft Exclusive in big letters along the botton of the packaging. The name is make to look like it matches a well known software company, yet in fact, its not the same company. Upon opening, and seeing the black and white labeling on the disk themselfs, that is identical, to the Bethesda game disks, except they are only in the colors of Black and White, where the original in in colors, I suspected I had been sold a Boot-leg game. As it turned out, it was a bad copy too. I am disapoited that the seller with a 100% rating, would sell a Boot-leged game. Beware of sellers.

"Sea Dog II, no!", I've been reading plenty of the other Reviews. There it goes again... Everyone says this game is "Sea Dog II". Despite in all regards it isn't. Not even close. I've myself played Sea Dog, and remember Sea Dog was created by a Russian Company. The "Disney" never bought the game.

Sea Dog II is still developing. You can Search Sea Dog II on Gamespot.com or search Age of Pirates. The company decided to change the name to Age of Pirates.

Sea Dogs II/ Age of Pirates
By: Akella

SD II/ AOP will be using a new render Storm II. I can't wait till it comes out.

---

Oh and by the way, "Pirates of the Carribean" was a good game, but I've been spoiled by Sea Dogs and other better sea-faring games. I recommend you to buy Sea Dogs II/ AOP when it arrives and not POTC.

"NOT Pirates of the Caribbean - just pirates", This was purchased for a child, at the request of that child. Personally, I don't care for the game. It was clearly scraped together at the last minute to exploit the film - it's a generic pirate game with no distinguishing characteristics except Johhny Depp on the jewelcase cover. I rather resent that.

In addition, it performs poorly with Windows XP, and there is no patch that I can locate. The 13-year old recipient of the game manages to make it work, but even he thinks it's a rip-off: fun enough, but nothing special. He's playing it while he waits impatiently for "POTC II".

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Very good Graphics, especially the water, and Ships", I don't understand some of the reviewers. This is a good game ,once you get the hang of it. You gamers need to add some mods to your game, as one of the reviewers so stated. Go to the website and download some stuff, and you will change your mine. You can also go into the main folder and change some things. Its easy to do. Once you do these things , this can be one of the most entertaining game to play. It is for me. I have a Manowar, 3 battleships, and 3 crewmen that bodyguards me at all times.Hire about 4 people out of the taverns, look at their character refrences, look at your passenger tab, pick out 3 of the best ones and place them with you to help you fight in the jungle and all other places, and They are all professional swordsmen, gunmen, with a critical Hit. When your reputation falls to horrors of the high seas, no one will mess with you anyways., Plus you can't beat the graphics, especially the water, and ship details. There is a lot of ways you can play this game, so many , I can't even imagine. I would suggest to some of you gamers, go to the (pirates ahoy) WEBSITE, try to find potc cheat file called cm-pocch zip file, it's a small file about 11 KB you can download to your desktop, doubleclick the zip folder, and it will ask you where you want to extract the file to, extract the file to the correct path, by browsing to the bethesda folder under your hard drive whether it might be C drive, or D drive (highlighting >pirates of the carribean<), then you click ... yes to all... to the pirates main directory. You can make yourself invulnerable, and your ship, at any time you wish, by pressing y, get all the money you want by pressing I, go into another 1st person mode, shotgun mode by pressing u. This game is a lot better than Farcry, believe me, once you have added the proper files. Thank You. PS ALTHOUGH NAVIGATION COULD HAVE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN PROGRAMMED DIFFERENTLY.....NOW I ALMOST FORGOT TO TELL YOU WHEN YOU CHANGE THE FILES, YOU WILL HAVE TO START THE GAME OVER,AND WHEN YOU FIRST START, GET YOUR SWORD AND OTHER ITEMS,LEARN HOW TO FIGHT,YOU WILL WALK TO THE PORT AND SEE YOUR MANOWAR, you will be suprised. don't try to walk in the jungle when it is too dark, get a room in the tavern, stay in there for about 30 seconds, and it will be getting light out side, when you hit the enter key the places will be opening, the store, shipyard and townhall on some islands...... For the guy that is having trouble with the game loading, you might can do this, remove all of the game files including the folder from your hard drive, reinstall the game, reboot your computer, go to dxdiag turn your sound hardware tab slider to one fourth, the first notch. Make sure the deleted files are removed from the trash bin, then try it again, I bet it will load, if you have enough MEMORY.

"Like Morrowind, if modded, it is BETTER!", Okay, sure, PotC is a buggy game. Yes, DisneyBucks caused the release to be rushed. NO, Bethesda did not design this game, Akella, the Russian game developer who designed Sea Dogs did. This game was supposed to be Sea Dogs II and no one was more dismayed than Akella when they saw what they had to do to their beautiful work. They did what they could, but in the time alloted, they unfortunately could NOT perform miracles.

Enter the average gamer, aka MYSELF. The manual is terrible (no wonder some of you have trouble with swordfights or storms, you have no clue of what to do). The game is buggy. You don't know why your PC is crashing all the time. What do you do? Well I first looked on the web for a patch to fix the bugs. Nothing. :( THEN I found there were websites that hosted free mods - there were people writing modifications to PotC that made the game INCREDIBLE!!! Bugs were fixed! Unfinished and locked quests were unlocked and finished. New quests were added. You could play the game past the end of the main quest. There were new ship skins and new characters (play as Capt. Jack Sparrow!), new items, and EVEN NEW LOCATIONS!

Look up "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Build 12" in any search engine, and you'll find what I'm talking about. This game is OUTSTANDING when modded, and the people at the site you find will help you if you get stuck.

It's a darned good game. In its original state it is a strong base for excellent gameplay if the problems are eliminated. It's fun - has adventure - drama - intrigue - GORGEOUS art - and imaginative scripting. Those who disagree - do you play Morrowind unmodded? Isn't it better with the mods?

Yup, I thought so. Get PotC... Get the mods. Immerse yourself in a fantastic absorbing game that has me STILL playing it today. BUY THIS GAME!

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

"I can see fine...", I personally liked this game. I don't know why I can while most other people can't, but I could see fine during the night, and although the jungles are a little hard to navigate through, you get the hang of it after a while. I loved all the battles you could do in this game, and the freedom of deciding where to go next..

"What a waste of time and money", This is my first review - ever. But I felt a sense of duty to let everyone know if you didn't buy this game yet, DON'T. This game is a complete waste of time. Don't buy it. It's nothing at all like Seadogs. A lot of reviewers rave about the great graphics, and they are great when you can see them. But forget about doing anything at night or when it's raining, it's virtually impossible to see anything. All you do is walk around in almost total blackness bumping into everything. If it starts getting dark at all, you have to go to a tavern, if you can, and wait until morning. At least in Seadogs, the lanterns were lit. If you're in the jungle, or anywhere outside of town, you may as well reload the game from where you left off. And what the *$!) is with the storms at sea? You can't control the ship, you can't see, and you just sit there until you reload the game or your ship sinks. I loved Seadogs, and couldn't wait until this game came out, then finally got it this past Christmas. I spent over half the game time so far wandering around in the dark. What a letdown.

"dunno", i got sum problem....installed the game...click on new game....there's a screen with the loading game...but it doesn't load at all...i've waited 1 hr but the game simply won't load...n then my system gets hanged...any ideas friends wat cud b the prob?my system requirements match.
