"dynasty is terrible"
I liked the Franchise mode from 2003. You could change teams any time you wanted, become every team if you liked, play any game. Even if my team didn't make the Final, I could still play the whole series! But EA Sports decided it'd be a wise decision to limit the people's options. Now, you can have ONE team, and you MUST deal with payroll, training and a bunch of other stuff that just takes time away from playing games. I wouldn't mind a salary cap (but then we wouldn't get the NHLPA to sign off would we?) or something to keep things in check, but that should be optional.

If you want to have one, and only one, team and mess with all sorts of budgets and firings and whatever, fine. But I don't want to. I want to be able to switch a team's ownership if I want one of their players on my team, and I don't want to have to fit him into a budget! I want to play Game 7 between Minnesota and Washington.

Please somebody from EA read this and add some choice to Franchise, because NHL 2003 ain't perfect but that's what I'm gonna play instead.

"Good Graphics, Good Game, Great Idea"
First off, I've been playing the EA NHL franchise since 93-94 and every few years the game gets a facelift. This year, you can see the mesh of the jerseys and the skating engine was improved. Another monster improvement was the lack of ability to skate through defenders with the puck. This means passing is very important, as it is in real life.

There are some bugs where defensemen (and goalies) knock the puck into their own nets, but overall the game plays well though it takes time to get proficient at it. The game scores are moderate (especially if you try and play it like a real game. If your scoring is spread around you might have 2 - 4 20 goal guys and maybe only 1 or 2 80-100 point players. Goalies are not likely to get more than 8-10 shut outs but your save percentage can get pretty high (around 0.930).

Dynasty mode. This is the best part of the game. The fact you can either take your favorite team or build your own (however which ever team is displaced from the NHL to accomodate you, their banners are still in your rink). You can do a complete fantasy draft and then start simming/playing games. Win now or win later by trading experience for potential, set your ticket prices, buy upgrades for your team, etc... The sad part is, you can't extend contracts until their last year (and then they usually want a big increase). Salary is based on stats, not performance, so if you have a really fast skater sitting 'in the minors' he'll want big league money....Hint: sign and trade for a young guy, especially if you don't need him right now.

The computer trades frequently though the dialog box you see does not have enough information. You have to go and manually look at the trade by proposing it yourself. The create a player feature, to me, was upgraded. Visually you are limited though now if you want a Wayne Gretzky - he's gonna cost ya. A lot of money.

The announcing team got a facelift with Craig Johnson becoming the new color guy. It sounded a bit stilted but at least he sounded intelligent.

I'll buy 05 when it comes out. I think the game went in the right direction this year from 03.

"Great Game...Can use some improvements"
For those who TRULY understand the game of hockey and how it is played you will know to give this game a good review. It is much improved over the versions of yesteryear. Yes it can use improvements, no doubt, but overall I am pleased with this version and have been waiting since NHL 99 for EA to release something worth buying/playing.

The faults with this game are the AI, the computer does have a tendency to go on sprees of scoring when they gain momentum ar get a goal. But you HAVE to learn how to negate this! I have learned very well how to CONTROL momentum throughout the game, and this is what the designers of the game had in mind when they wrote it. There is also a little too much emphasis on the one-timer in this game, I would like to see a little more on the other facets of scoring as well. Also the bobbling puck that suddenly finds it's way into the net can be frustrating as hell. But heym thats video games for ya.

The pluses are the player movements, choice to fight, checking, (made it more difficult to do-because it is tough to do in real life!) And I LOVE the way you can grind in the corners in the offensive zone. There is truly nothing more real about Hockey than that.

I recommend this game to any hockey enthusiast looking for a good time. The upper levels can be tough to compete in, but in time you will be playing with the best of em. With a little arm pump I might add! For PC it is totally worth the $19.99. Go buy and have a blast. Trust me, I am a tough critic. This one is worth it!

"Did EA test this game before it was released?"
One can tell that much effort was put into game play, visual realism, and features. But after the game was "put together" did anyone at EA check to see how the final game played or if those features even worked?
Because of a poorly planned player ratings (skills) system(including facilities that start poor and can only IMPROVE with time?), one is left to wonder why all their players perform more poorly with each passing game. -Thinking gamers beware.
The interface is a mess, with player information scattered and not where you need it.
Outrageous simulated scoring of players (Paul Kariya- 13 goals, 9 assists in 3 games) can crush your hopes of your star player ever topping the ratings.
Also, players may still end up with 'twins' still playing on their previous team when you create a new team to replace another in the league. Horrible errors.
It all leads to a major disappointment from EA.

"SAME OLD GARBAGE"
Good game, but the same.
Every year they make a new a NHL game, NHL 2000, NHL 2001, and so on.
Its all the same, exept maby better graphics, and changed teams.
This goes the same to Fifa, and other EA sports games.
They basicly have the same idea.
If you are gonna buy NHL 2004, dont waste youre money on NHL 2005, when it comes out, because its gonna be the same!
My point is, if you buy NHL 2004, thats it dont buy next 1, wait a 1000 years and then buy a new 1 which will be NHL 3004 ;)
So if you have NHL 2002 or 2003, dont get NHL 2004, its not worth the money.
:-)

"NHL 2004", Ive always enjoyed EA Sports NHL series. I wanted a newer NHL game for my lap top so I looked around, and bought this game. While the dynasty mode is fun, create your own team can be used during a season, updated rosters...this game falls flat on game play. It's hard to control a player, game play is fast but can get frustrating, and you cannot have 56-0 games like on older versions. I prefer 2001 compared to 2004, get that game instead.

"Realistic hockey experience- as opposed to 2002", The only NHL game I had spent lots of time on before 2004 was 2002. 2004 is a monstrous jump from 2002 in so many ways.

Pros: You can activate fights when you want to- it doesn't just happen.
Realistic skating, the glass breaks, goalie movements and saves are very real. The goalie can lose the puck in confusion and the players pass the puck around the boards like in real hockey.
Has eliminated the "magnet" effect of 2002, where if the puck is near the goalie or a player it will automatically be attracted to the player's stick.
Has also added charge up hit and the ability to aim your checks.

Cons: There aren't any trading cards like in 2002

"NYC#4", Definitely the best they've made. I was surprised at how they made it - great skating, hitting, shooting, and fun. If you miss 97', 98' and 99', this one really brings back their old touch. A real game that's intense, exciting and fun. The best of the best!

"Very Nice!", Okay, to start this review off, let me say that the only NHL game I had played before this was 2001. That said, 2004 is a quantum leap forward in just about every area: graphics, ai, gameplay, realism, fight engine...the list goes on and on. So far, my only complaint has been that the scoring leaders in a league post some absolutly impossible numbers, I mean, how does a guy score 18 goals in 8 games?!!! Other than that. this game is definetly worth it. I have spent a little time tinkering with the options to make it just a tad more realistic, but then I just started playing. The Dynasty Mode is absolutly killer. Definetly an awesome game!

"A mix of good and bad", Having played two seasons, and read many reviews I shall summarize some of my own observations about the game:

Pros:

Improved AI in the defensive department;
SIM manager mode is excellent; maintains much of the EA quality from previous years (but see 'cons') making it well paced and fun to play.

Cons:

Despite the AI being improved, it still lacks overall, with many many flaws. Predominant complaint is the over zealous defense, who take on the role of forward all to much, leaving the forwards at the point--this is especially frustrating when you defense is your weakest link on your team and your forwards are your only hope to score; the difficulty ranking is especially frustrating: as one ascends in difficulty, the AI does get better as expected, but the increase in difficulty really lies in the computer increasing its clutch and grab game and not being called for penalties on them--this is especially frustrating when you get a rebound on either end and you get blatantly and extendly hooked, and the end result is a lost scoring chance or a goal, depending on which end you reside. This latter flaw I find most annoying, especially since all it does is mimic what is exactly wrong with the real game today. The tougher the team, the more they clutch and grab.
I will agree with other reviewers that the momentum is somewhat exaggerated, leading to scoring in bushels for the opposition; this seems to always occur late in the 3rd when you are up a goal. The only remedy for this is a great goaltender, but if your are playing a Dynasty and wish to build from scratch, you are SOL for the first 2 seasons anyway. The interface is clunky with lots of back and forth clicking between menus. No ability to see attributes of players offered in trades. A final complaint is the poor QC on the game: I created a team and took several players to create it (mostly crappy ones with high potential) but when I started the Dynasty there were clones of my players. This seems like something that should have been worked out on the beta stage and shame on EA for not working this really stupid problem out. Honestly, they should realease versions biannually and just perfect and update via patches and I'll bet they'll have happier customers at the end of the day.

Like many sports games, NHL2004 is entertaining, and it's bad points make you want to kick your computer into high heaven at various times. But, this has been the story for several years now and any fan of the franchise knows that you wait a year or two before picking it up, so you only pay 10 bucks for it tops. Many oversights (such as the overzealous defense) detract from 100% enjoyment of this game, and make it more of a way to kill time than something more engaging. I still like the old SEGA version best.

"Good...but not the best", NHL 2004 turned out to be a bit less than what I expected but it is still a fun game to play. The graphics are extremely good in this year's version. The crowd is in 3D and the players seem much more realistic than in my old NHL 2002. Some faces look a bit screwy but it is noting really bad.

Gameplay is much more difficult this year. NHL 2002 was a breeze for me even on hard but NHL 2004 presents much more of a challenge. The game does feel a bit more realistic though. One con is that hitting another player is made very difficult. I have not gotten off nearly as many hits as I wanted to and the Bruise Control system is hard to work with. It will take a while to get used to everything and the numerous controls. I play it on a keyboard and it is a bit too much for it. A gamepad will help but the amount of controls available can be a bit overwhelming. Advanced maneuvers will be challenging to pull off until you can get used to everything.

The interface seems fairly streamlined but in-game menus seem clunky as if it was still in early beta testing. EA could have done a much better job in making that look more streamlined. Sound is pretty much as good as it gets. Commentary sounds less cheesy and more professional. There are a few jokes thrown in but nothing as bad as the ones in NHL 2002.

Overall, its a pretty decent game once you get the hang of it. I am still training myself to work with the game on Easy right now and hope to advance up to higher levels one day. The only major con I see is the difficulty to control players with so many commands available at your fingertips. Most of you should enjoy NHL 2004.

"Better than all the others and it's for the ps2", When I got Nhl for Christmas, I was so excited. This game is so cool. The create-a-team is so cool but I wish they had more logos to choose from. Here are the pros and here are the cons

Cons:
-Can't play as any retired legends
- It's hard to control the goalie
-When you deke you usually lose the puck
- No practice or shootout mode or anything like that

Pros:
- Great graphics
- Big realistic bodychecks
- Easy to score on easy levels
- your choice about fighting or not
- ability to download current rosters off the internet
- dynasty mode where you control just about everything
- so many camera modes to choose from
- you can put created teams for all modes
- you can assign created players to any team including the all-star

Many more good things about it but this is all I can think of at the time. I recommend this game all NHL gamers.

"THE BEST!!!!", I have purshased every EA sports NHL series since NHL 99 (with the exception of 2000) And I have to say EA has come VERY LONG WAY and it doesn't appear to be stopping. NHL 2004 is the best ever. All the players are very realistic and, for once, they actually do realistic things. You can see the snow spray from their skates from stopping. It took me a while to get used to the new controls, but once you get it, it's great. (you may want to get a logitech dual action controller, so you can use the Bruise Control). The music is very cool. The only problem I have is the fighting. I think that it is a great idea and very realistic, but I can never seem to win a fight, but mabye that's just me. A great game all around. I encourage all to buy this game for only 15 dollars. Oh yeah, and 1 more thing. EA finally got smart and dropped Don Taylor and replaced him with Craig Simpson. WAY TO GO EA!!!!!!!!! P.S. GO COLORADO!!!!!

"Very VERY good", Wow, this edition of EA's NHL line is vast improvement upon all others. It's realistic to the point annoyance in many aspects. Players missing the net, and making bad passes on great opportunities has caused me a great deal of frustration a number of times. A players skills fluctuate from game to game depending on a number of factors such as morale, quality of travel, practice rink, equipment, gym, and locker room. Player progression is dependent on the quality of your coach and not just his stats or potential. I've yet to see a goalie let in a shot from the blue line as well. Skating has become much more realisitic as well, you can no longer reach top speed in just a couple strides or continue at high speed after making a sharp turn. What I don't like about 04 is that for dynasty mode you have to play the long season, that means you play 82 games every season plus play-offs. When a team proposes a trade all you see is the overall stat and how much they get paid, you don't see their potential, age, or anything else. It's become nearly impossible to make any trades because there is no way of knowing what other teams want or determining how likely a team is to accept. All trades offered end up with the user holding the short end of the stick. Also there are no longer box scores for previous games.

"Same old story with EA. We need a challenger on the pc!!!!", Alright, you won't be winning the high number of 10 to 2 games this year and the offensive play isn't as simplistic as in years past, but the same occurrences that made you want to punch through your monitor are still commonplace. It's still amazes me that when playing on any difficulty level with the exception of beginner, the computer teams will go on incredible scoring spurts. They never score just one, it always seems to be three or four within a very short time span. The centering passes they make always hit the mark and your worthless AI defenseman are content to lie down or just do nothing (just like every other EA NHL). My only defensive assignment is to try and account for this, otherwise I will have absolutely no chance at winning the game. Again, the familiar miracle goals by the computer will come into play whenever you manage to get yourself a one or two goal lead late in the game. This includes blue line wristers and shots from angles that hardly ever result in goals in actual NHL hockey. The passing system is a disaster, as you've probably already read or heard from other disappointed pc gamers. The graphics might actually be taking a few steps backwards, with the utterly laughable cartoonish faces, but I wouldn't even care if EA could somehow give me the impression that the computer isn't a GOD who scores at will and only toys with me for two and a half periods before unleashing a flurry of goals during the last few minutes of the game. Oh wait, they improved the fighting engine. BFD, that stupid system should've been overhauled at least three years ago. I'm glad I have a PS2 so I can play Sega's NHL version, but there must be a revolution to counter the tyranny of the lazy, repetitive EA Sports dictatorship.
