Others say..."Awful product. Cannot connect to accounts. Over-complex."First, some background on us. We are very experienced computer users who setup the computer systems used by some of the largest banks around. Yet we cannot get Microsoft Money 2004 to connect to our own personal accounts. One bug: Money will pull account data from a popular online brokerage, then five minutes later the data will be gone from the UI, even if you force Money to reconnect to the online brokerage. Another issue: your regular username and password that you use to access an account online, fequently will NOT work with Money. So you need to call each financial institution individually to get connect. Since this is something that few financial institutions deal with on a regular basis, their regular customer support cannot help you and you need to call during special times of the day. Calling Microsoft Money technical support puts you into India. How would you feel about discussing your personal financial account data with someone in India, where security laws are much more lax compared to the US? More on security: can you trust Microsoft Money to be without security flaws given all the recent IE issues? The user interface is incredibly complex and unintuitive. The issue is that all features are thrown at the user at once, rather than being phased-in. There is a deluge of options to scan through. Of course, none of these features work since we can't get basic account info.
"Frustrating and poorly designed" I have been using checkbook software for over fifteen years, starting with the Mac and Quicken, moving on to various versions of Quicken on the PC. I switched to Money from Quicken at the turn of the year for three reasons: frustration with Quickens bloating features and pop-ups (too much getting in the way), Intuit's policies with Turbo Tax (a protest), and Quicken BillPays interfaces and clunky operation. Big mistake. Money 2004 was even worse. I download my statements from my bank using a web and .qif file interface. Money is abysmal at this - it makes almost random matches, it tries to match electronic downloads with DIFFERENT amounts, it does not read or use the information in the .qif file such as payee, and more. It makes more work trying to clean it up than it saves. Not using the data in the .qif file (like payee name) is TOTALLY INEXCUSABLE. Reconciling is also tons of fun. Reconciling is an important task, since Money's statement download is so prone to errors. First, it tries to clear everything Ihave downloaded for me - have to go through and manually unreconcile everything then start over. The Help file does not appear to be written for this version of Money - the information just does not match what I see on the screen. The Payee list gets unweildy and there is no efficient way to prune it - deleting payees you have used only once more than a year ago, for instance. The list goes on. In a nutshell, Microsoft has ignored the basics of good design needed to maintaining a number of accounts in favor of useless features, strange sound effects and confusing glitz. I am looking for a replacement ....
"Isn't this amazing" So you're wondering whether to buy MS Money or Quicken. So you look at this page and read the reviews that say this is the worst piece of software ever written and how they wished they'd bought Quicken. The you go to the Quicken reviews, and surprise surprise, you read essentially the same nonsense from people wishing they'd bought Money. Now, I'm willing to accept there may be some preference, but both pieces of software were given 5-stars by PC Magazine. They said there's little difference between the two, and that both do an good job. I think what we're seeing here is a battle between the software Talaban, not real reviews, similar to the fight between those who swear by PC vs. those who swear by Macs. I've used both Quicken and Money 2004. Both work fine.
"disappointed with microsoft money 2004 deluxe" Itried ms money 04 deluxe but encountered problem after installation when I was reaching the final stage of data entry for my accounts. Apparently the software is geared to access data with hooks to microsoft net passport and msn money site. although I have a hotmailaccount it gave me en error "money has encountered an error and will shut down.... this errror is related to a mspfct10.dll file problem. Msn email tech support could not solve it and they tried the ususal tricks related to another dll file problem witnessed with this product. There is a sample account in the system folder of this software which one can use and it functions without a problem, but you loose the additional functionality by noy logging to the account and web via passport. Also downloading statements to the accounts was unreliable and sometimes inaccessible. I returned it to ms after 10 days of B testing. I would stick to quicken new user edition which is easy to function but still is inadequate
"Not worth the upgrade" For Quicken Usrs: I wouldn't waste my money on this product especially if you're well established with your current version of Quicken. If you decide to change over, you might want to consider Money 2003. You might get it cheaper than version 2004. I just downloaded the trial version of MS Money 2004 and have to say that I was quite disappointed. Thank goodness for trial versions. I still had version 2003 on my computer when I tried version 2004. For current Money 2003 users: Don't forget to backup your current money 2003 data files because the trial version will convert those files. If you want to go back to using 2003, you'll have to restore the old data files. I have to say that I didn't notice any changes from the previous version (2003). The calculations/numbers that 2004 produced were pretty much the same I had with 2003. The one thing I really wanted to know is if I could generate a customized report with a line graph. I wanted to look at spending trends for certain of my bills over the past year. In version 2003 you could not use the line graph (only bar and pie chart) even though it was there but greyed out. This really didn't make any sense. Why offer the feature but grey it out? I tried every combination but could never get the line graph to work. I also noticed that the information on the chart was not well organized but real confusing. The labels and legend on the chart were not placed in the correct areas. You had to constantly refer to the chart's legend for information so you could unstand what the chart was telling you. Well--version 2004 didn't change anything. It's the same lousy format. The other thing I wanted to know is if MS had made any changes to Tax Estimation feature. I have to tell you that it hasn't changed either. It seems money continues to consider everyone in the 27% tax bracket and doesn't really allow you to change it. The questions you're asked about your taxes hasn't changed either. They need to do a better job of integrating the information you put in all year round with their tax estimator. It still has a lot of holes in it. I guess they're saving that feature for a future upgrade. I'm back to using Money 2003, because I really never had any problems with it. MS needs to set up a forum for this product so they can listen to our comments and make this a better product.

What our customer's say!
"Using this software is like trying to hug a bear", The software looks good and feels professional, yet when you try to delve into it, it bites you.
Software like this is supposed to make life easier. However this software seems extremely rigid in its approach and unintuitive. It doesnt predict common issues that are bound to crop up. If you want to resolve what seems like a simple problem theres usually no direct route to do it and you have to spend an hour tinkering and working around things.
Unfortunately typical Microsoft product I have to say, seems like they're more interested in crosslinking you to their websites and pay services than they are in providing you with a competant and truly customer orientated piece of software.
"Microsoft Money 2004 Deluxe", Excellent financial management program, easy to use. Budgeting, bill paying, portfolio, bank accounts, credit card accounts, mortgages and loans, tax management, and retirement planning are all handled with ease and accuracy. I do recommend that you get Peter Weverka's book - "Microsoft Money 2004 for Dummies" if you would like to be able to use the program to the fullest extent with the least confusion. Together, they're unbeatable!
"Microsoft Money 2004 Deluxe", Worthless software. You will be better off keeping a paper record. It'll be faster to do!!
"WTF?", Don't DO IT!! If you have 2003, stick with it. Nothing really new except more commercials. When you go to balance your check book, you get only ONE amt if you are off. No more are the separated amounts as to deposits/withdrawals in the left column. And don't even get me started on performance...like trying to get a snail to run.
"Unhappy with Product", I have been using Money 2003 Deluxe for almost two years and found it to be a very helpful program. Because I was so happy with this program I decided to upgrade to the 2004 edition.
This is where I get unhappy with the product. Unlike the 2003 version I couldn't get the 2004 version to update my stock prices. I contacted Microsoft's technical services which told me that if the portfolio you are trying to update contains American Depository Receipts (ADRs), because of some bug your portfolio will not update. BTW, I don't think all ADRs are effected, just the ones that trade Over-The-Counter or on the Pink Sheets.
This astounds me. How could a previous edition do something perfectly and the updated version not? This is also not a small bug, since I can't be the only one trying to use this program with ADRs in my portfolio. In any event,I uninstalled 2004 Deluxe and reinstalled 2003 Deluxe. Now all fine, but for the fact I am out of the money for costs of Money 2004.
Go ahead, ask me if I'm going to buy the 2005 version?!?!
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy..."It's decent", I finally broke down and switched to Microsoft Money recently. It works well enough to manage my personal finances. I think the budget function could use a little work. I've got to manually download my credit card statement for some reason it doesn't catch it when it gets the checking and savings information from the same bank website and page. Over-all it has met my needs and no major complaints. I definitely like it better than Quicken. "Awful Experience", After years of using Quicken, I thought it might be time to try Microsoft Money. I have had some issues with Intuit's products lately and with the tax software/Microsoft Money rebate combos, I cound try Microsoft Money Deluxe free. What a disaster! I have multiple accounts at many of the financial institutions I deal with and Money gave me fits trying to get the information downloaded into each account. My mortgage setup was mess as Money kept calculating different values then my bank (and Quicken). I do not believe the user interface is intuitive or as easy to use as Quicken and the help files were not always accurate. After less then a month I have gone back to Quicken 2003 and I plan to never invest my time with Money again. Thank goodness it did not cost me anything to try Money. "Don't Upgrade! If your'e happy with your older version", My new PC came with Money 2004. I was very happy with my old Money 99 but I thought I'd try it. I'm so sorry I upgraded! You can also download an 60 day trial but you'll run into the same problems. Once you upgrade you can never go back. If you're using Quicken or an Older version of Money, Money 2004 makes it extremely difficult for exporting data back to Quicken and there's no way back to older versions of money. On the Money 2004 FAQ, it leads you to believe you can, but you can't and then you find yourself 60 days in and find out you'll either have to buy or spend time reentering all your transactions for the last 60 into your older version. Don't Do it! Also 2004 is a subscription service so expect some features to expire. "Supports both US and Canadian financial institutions", I used to be a Quicken user unitl i had a need to access and sychronize against both US and Canadian banks/brokerages. This was the main reason I switched to MS Money. I still think Quicken was the better product but it is useless to me now that I have accounts in more than one country. "Budget functions are very weak", No aspect of financial management is more important than budgeting. The flaws in the budgeting features of Money 2004 are severe, and as a result this software is utterly inadequate. By way of illustration, after spending a couple of hours inputting our basic financial data, I constructed a household budget for the coming year, and a list of our cherished financial goals. Having done so, I discovered, not surprisingly, that the sum total of all the things we'd like to do are beyond our means for the coming year. Clearly, it was time to print out the budget and our goals, so that my wife and I could look at them all together, and make some tough choices. Unfortunately, the program does not provide for this. Our only option is to scroll through the budget looking at the small sliver of it that is visible in the window that Money opens on the laptop screen. Each time we modify the budget or the goals, we have to switch back and forth between screens for the budget and the list of goals. It seems to be possible to print an expense report comparing outlays already made to a predefined budget, but you can't print out budgets in advance of spending. It's amazing to me that a multi-billion dollar industry leader would shortchange such a basic function. You can be sure that Microsoft's financial department prints out budgets for study and modification before spending starts. But MS couldn't be bothered to make that basic planning tool available to the households using its products. I chose Money because the Amazon reviews were so negative for Quicken. At this point I think I'll go back to using spreadsheets to construct my own budgets and cash flow projections. It's timeconsuming, especially because of error-checking, but at least I can perform this basic task of financial management.
