"Very relaxing game. UNTIL YOU CRASH AAAAAAHHH!!!!"
Great way to spend a Saturday night (ok..I'm married...not a nerd..well...a little nerdy). I used to love to shoot things down and enjoy more arcade style action. Now in my old age...let me just ease forward on the throttle, bring the nose up, adjust the flaps...and look out the window. Looking forward to adding 2 more flat screens and track-ir for head tracking! Then I'll be really flying and my wife will still be rolling her eyes. Great game.

"A toy for Flight Sim X"
I was very disappointed with this add on for FSX. I guess if you are a 9 year old the missions might be fun, but as realistic flight situations, not so. The airplanes are very ho-hum and made worse by the fact they only have VC cockpits, with the attendant lousy lighting.

Save your cash, buy a good add on from Eaglesoft or PMDG.

"Crashes"
Product installed out of the box crashes and after initial run of Flying Lessons, closes program each time Flying Lessons is selected.
Working with tech support provided a 3 step process to each time Flight Simulator is loaded. A Selective Startup IPL is required to run to eliminate ALL background programs. After running the game, a Normal Startup restart is required to return the computer to normal operation.

Microsoft should include these instructions up front in the installation instructions instead of leaving it to each purchaser to discover the system environment required to run the program. Once beyond this, great scenery, wide range of aircraft, and complete flying lessons as well as ground training on theory of flying.

"What's Going On Here?"
I bought this flight sim from Amazon, and I really like it, in fact, it is a marvel what such a small amount of money will buy. I've had a lot of time in military airplanes as a crew member, and I have 300 hrs as a private pilot in the C152, C172, C182's, C210, and P-Arrow. I stopped flying due to a lapsed medical, so I was looking for an outlet. I find the flight sim landings to be quite realistic. One good thing is you can replay each landing to review how you managed your airspeed, rate of descent, and flight attitude. At first I had some problems running the program on my computer, so I installed a better graphics card, and that helped. But, when I try to move from one program module to another the program just disappears, and it takes several tries and/or computer reboots to get going again--I can't figure this out. I intend to install more computer memory, but I really doubt that this is the problem. In short, this is a great flight sim for the money, but I wonder who can run it without these irritations? I will keep this going as I really don't know that there is anything that runs better.

"Still Better than FSX"
Smooth graphics, realistic airplanes, realistic NAVAIDS, flies like the real thing (I am a Private Pilot of 25 years). For a great at-home way to practice VOR holds and other IFR procedures, Flight Simulator (combined with a good quality yoke and pedals) still reigns. I own FSX too, even on my brand new dual processor high end machine, FSX still is a crummy sim compared to it's predecessor.

What our customer's say!

"Needs Yoke! or at least Joystick", Great real-time simulation. This is NOT a *game*- but an exciting virtual reality flight. It does include ATC but NOT the major civilian airlines like I was hoping (American, Delta, United, etc.)

Above all let me stress in this review: YOU NEED THE YOKE. If you can't afford a yoke the joystick is second best but the keyboard SUCKS. I learned that. So it's okay to use the keyboard for your first few flights but be sure to invest in a Flight Simulator yoke (or joystick) if you haven't already.

PS? Amazon: Where did the game go? You are not offering it anymore! :( only 3rd party sellers now? ITS STILL IN DEMAND

"Love it. Less taxing on your system than Flight Simulator X", My son Henry and I enjoy flight simulating together. Our last version was 2002, and the 2004 version is far superior. Most noticeable is an increase in the graphics quality of terrain and clouds/weather. The realism of 2004 is certainly acceptable, and is closer to "X" than to 2002.

More importantly, it runs acceptably (even nicely) on lower horsepower machines...I have it on a Sony laptop (1280x768, ~500MHz Pentium M, 512k RAM, XP SP2) with most sliders set to "high quality" (including bilinear anti-aliasing), and we get a pretty reliable 17-18 frames per second (fps). For us, that's a requirement for good control; lower than that and we both get frustrated.

By comparison, "X" on the same machine, with quality set mostly "Low", barely can get 10 fps. So, there's a big difference in performance.

In short, if you've got a machine of limited resources (especially the 3D graphics chip), stick with 2004. It's almost as good as "X", and you won't be frustrated with lower frame rates. Of course, if you've got a fancy new GPU from Nvidia, go for "X"; it's really great.

"FS2004", The graphics in FS2004 are vastly superior to those in my older, FS2000. Yet, they don't overwhelm my 2-year old WindowsXP machine, as FSX is rumored to do. Very nice, and customizable.

"Flight simulator", Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of FlightTrying to fly a flight from point A to point B I find it difficult to change radio navigation frequencies with no radio panels available. Try to use pause command and then shift 2 to get the radio panels with no successful results. The pitch trim{up or down)does not work like the real world. Must continue to hold up or down elevator force. I had Flight Simulator 98 before and I fill it was more user friendly.

"Recommend this over FSX", I purchased this after buying FSX and was unable to even install FSX on my computer. I had been using an older version of Flight Simulator so FS2004 was still an upgrade. I am so happy that I went with the 2004 version. First, it was quick and easy to install. I did not have any problems at all. Second, I was able to find lots of add-ins (scenery, airplanes, etc...) to make the experience even better. I have noticed a ton of improvements over earlier version and my 2 year old computer has not problem running the graphics.

"Fun for beginner", I bought this game for my father. He always wanted to be a pilot and has really enjoyed this game. It is perfect for someone who is just getting started. I am thrilled that he is enjoying this so much.

"Flight Sim in the Southern Caribbean", I am a FS 98 owner. Upgrading to 2004 was absolutely fantastic. I flew from Trinidad through the caribbean. Absolutely spectacular!!!

"Enjoyable", I bought the flight simulator for myself but once I showed it to my husband, I lost the use of my laptop. He went from a man who had never seen a use for a computer to one who will sit for hours looking for the correct runway to land his plane. Neither of us are very good pilots though, using the handy controls for the game, everything is toned down for a beginner. It's one thing to fly a plane but to allow wind currents and traffic, weather, and the threat of running out of fuel affect it, let's put it this way, this is a game a novice can enjoy as well as those who are experienced in flying. I like it!

"Excellent game", This is an excellent piece of software. I am a professional aerospace engineer and I can assure that they have the physics done very well. It would be perfect it I was good enough pilot to fly the planes!

"Fun game but needs improvement as far as the way the gauges look and the plane operates", Although the learning references are excellent and very informative, the planes and there actual methods of operation suck by reality standards. If you are a true boeing fan and like to fly the "heavies" you will pinch yourself for a reality check when you try out the PMDG lineup of 737s and 747s. You will never want to go back to the microsoft planes after you try PMDG for the first time! Although the jets are very complicated to start up and prepare for flight, they are so worth it! You will very rarely have engine stalls and the actual simulation itself is as authentic as authentic can get. If you're interested check out precisionmanuals.com. This game is necessary as prerequisite for playing PMDG so if you only want to fly the PMDG planes by the way this review sounds, you will still need to install MSFS2004 first. But if you only want to fly the MSFS planes, I say good luck with trying.

To make learning how to operate the gauges and buttons easier be sure to check into the Microsoft flight simulator 2004 strategy guide. That is the only way you will ever learn to get it up and then get it back down successfully time and time again
