What our customer's say!
"One of my Favorites", The game itself hasn't gotten the positive reviews it's deserved over the years.. It absolutely ROCKS! You are Torque, a man convicted for slaughtering his wife and children where, in prison, he discovers that things aren't quite what they appeared to be. The controls (XBOX) are a bit tricky getting fluent with at first, but, when they become your second gaming nature (which doesn't take too long), watch out... hours of creepy fun. And, one of the best qualities that The Suffering offers is that you can choose to be good or evil with your gameplay, what you choose will effect the conclusion, and, the side you chose to be on in The Suffering part 1 can be automatically read and transfered over into the Suffering part 2- Ties That Bind (being if you kept the saved data from The Suffering part 1 in your counsel). This is a staple for Horror/Survival genre gamers and a good ol' scary time for everyone. Now, buy the game, load it up, turn the lights off and prepare for something your won't forget anytime soon.
"Very Mediocre", I bought a used copy of this game after it was touted by Game Informer as having one of the top ten scariest game moments. How can you go wrong with a horror game set in a prison?
Loveless execution, that's how. This game feels like a simple mod of a generic third-person shooter with some prison uniform skins slapped into place. The playability is uninteresting and loose -- the characters sort of slide across the ground while scissoring their legs instead of looking like they're actually making contact with the ground while running, and so on.
Torque's lack of reaction to anything around him consistently bothered me. An iron door would slam right behind him, or a guard would be torn in half immediately before him, and he would have NO REACTION AT ALL (in contrast, think about Resident Evil 4 -- Leon would crouch slightly in reaction to nearby explosions). This could probably be passed of as trying to cast Torque as stony and cold, but in reality I'm sure it was that the dev shop management didn't budget for those little extras that really breathe life into the game.
The attempted 'gritty' language is just egregious. Combined with the stupid AI, it leads to some real annoyances -- for example, I was following an NPC, and I stopped to look at something and apparently wasn't following quickly enough for his satisfaction. He starts hollering the same "come on, m*** f***r!" audio clip over and over at ten-second intervals, drawing my wife into the living room so she can scold me for the game's pointless, naughty language.
The fact that the game is older really isn't an excuse for its high degree of crappitude -- there are some truly hair-raising, beautifully crafted horror games that are 4+ years old -- Eternal Darkness and the 'Haunted Asylum/Orphanage' level in Thief: Deadly Shadows come to mind.
Life's just too short to play mediocre games. Stick with solid action games like RE4 or Riddick, or lovingly crafted horror titles like the ones mentioned above. Strongly suggest you skip this game.
"Not really scary, but still pretty fun", Good atmosphere and game design make this better than average. I wouldn't say that I was ever really scared by it, but then it is just a game. There is an interesting collection of enemies and some decent, but basic, weapons. The story itself has some thought put into it and although it uses checkpoints, it also allows you to save whenever you want.
"The most terrifying game since Fatal Frame II", Imagine a game that is a cross between "Max Payne" and "Silent Hill." That is just what you will get in this extremely unnerving and disturbingly scary game, "The Suffering."
You play a character by the name of Torque, and you have been framed for the murder of your family. As punishment, you are sent to Carnate Island, and put on death row for 8 years until you are executed.
WARNING: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD
Then, an "earthquake" happens, and bizarre creatures, shaped by the horrific executions they endured, begin to kill the inmates, and guards in many gruesome ways.
This game is really, in my opinion, an A rated game, masked by an M rating. The violence is very disturbing, and extremely scary. There is alot of Strong Language, and some drug references. Also, the thematic material may be too intense for some people.(I forgot to mention there is an extremely high blood and gore factor in this game.) Good luck............ ;)
"constant work on game", I love the game, but I wish I could get feedback. I have had the game over a year, and I just cant get past level 5. I try till get a migrain headace, people tell me to stop, but when they are away I try again. I played 8 hours with a few breaks. The trounle I have is I just rin around in circles on the ground. Today I was running in circls, and then I read that the door to the libray and infirmy were all the back at the so I ran and got into the infirmary, library, and now trying Hardgrave. Also some person wrote a review that it was only and the stradgry guide twenty one levels, I do not see 21 levels could fit. I wonder if there 9 levels and the others are bonus.

"Perfect Balance", First of all, to help our friend out who got stuck at the chasm, you have to kill all the infernas PLUS shoot their ash piles when they collapse. Otherwise, they keep regenerating, and you'll just die. Once you kill them all and destroy their ashes, walk to the edge and the bus will come barreling down the street, so get out of the way! This game is genuinely terrifying. My pulse raced on a regular basis as I was playing it. Disturbing images throughout as well. And the boss at the end is spectacular. I found the ending to be anti-climactic, but it doesn't detract from the game very much. By the time you get to the boss, you've seen it all anyway, so what else do you expect, right? I found it to be a perfect balance of story, gameplay, and puzzle solving. The profanity was very excessive, however, and that's why I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I know it's prison, but come on, game designers. Kids are playing these games whether the Mature rating is on there or not. We all know what cursing sounds like, and I really don't need to hear the "f" word and the "c" word over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over (I'm not exaggerating here, dear reader. The profanity is a constant stream throughout the game. It never lets up. I found it extremely juvenile of the designers to include so much of it. It reminds me of a bunch of junior high boys who have just started getting bold enough to cuss around their friends.) If you can tolerate the language, this is a truly terrifying experience.
"Runaway Bus Part", Well it's been months since I typed my last review and I'm still stumped on this part. What's so frusrating is that I'm so close to the end and I'm stuck on an easy part like this. The guide book says to walk right up to the gap in the road and I approach the gap as close as I can and nothing happens. I've tried shooting the truck, jumping across, etc. The infernas keep killing me after a while becuase they keep coming and I run out of ammunition. Either I'm an idiot for doing something wrong, or is my game messed up ? People keep talking about the boss at the end being somewhat tough. I wish I could make it to that part and finish it off but for some reason I can't beat this part. Somebody please help me out. I'm usually not stumped at videogames but man I'm stumped here. As for the game itself, it's pretty good, the graphics are great, the images, the controls take a little bit getting used to but you get the hand of it. It is not a game for people who don't like bad language or scary images but if you want a horror game, try this one out. I just wish they wouldn't make things so hard to figure what to do or where to go. I would rather be stuck at a tough boss then this. At least then you know what to do.
"Great where it needs to be", OK, Ill review this from the perspective of how much fun did I have with the game... the answer is a lot... Most people will complain becuase the enemies can be a little repetitive, but other then that the game was just a thrill to play. First off, its all out cool, the setting of the prison is awesome and adds an air of creepiness. Not just becuase your in a freaking prison with creatures everywhere, but theres always a hint of just total insanity, esp as you leanr more about the prisons past. I think the story was well written and def keeps you wanting to learn more about not just the prison and its insane past but also about your character, Torque, and his "origin". I liked the fact that the game shift gears to keep you on your toes, yes some areas are slow, but thats ok, becuase it makes you REALLY wonder whats around the corner. Other times its just balls out hack and slash, which is great. Overall I like the Doctor, his voiuce work was EXCELLENT, really creepy and just insane sounding, not comic at all. If you have the $30 odd bucks get this game, at the least rent it for a weekend and, oh, you must play it in the dark.
"An Awesome Under-Appreciated Game", Once I picked up this little 'gem', I couldn't put it down, even though I was playing Riddick and KOTOR at the same time. I loved pretty much everything about this game. It was fun, well executed, with good level design, an interesting story and loads of fun. It even had some fun extras, like a documentary about ghostly prisons. It's more than your average day FPS. I was able to play through the game in just a few days, but I spent quite a few hours on it daily. Yes, I have no life right now.
The game has three endings depending on how well you 'behave' when you encounter other NPC's. Help them, ignore them or kill them.
The difficulty is adjustable and on normal, it was just a blast to play through. You have the usual array of weapons and once in a while you even get to use a mounted machine gun, which is quite useful in those areas, when the enemies just swarm at you for cannon fodder. The enemies/monsters are fun, based on the method of their execution. They could have been a bit more varied, but overall it doesn't matter. In some areas they respawn, while in other you can just clean up and have some peace.
I didn't think it was overly gory, though there is a bit of red around and there is quite a bit of 'adult' language, if you want to call it that. The voice acting is ok, with only a couple of weirdos thrown in. (That green gas thing is a bit annoying and one of the initial prisoners is too, though luckily he doesn't last very long). I wish the game would have been a bit longer, but that just tells me I had a lot of fun with it.
It has good level design, you usually know where you need to go, though there is some room for roaming. There is not much backtracking, which is nice. You can switch from 3rd to 1st person view and each is useful in certain situations. Some parts of the game is genuinly creepy and surprised even me occasionally and I normally don't jump for anything. I had some issues loading the game sometimes, but maybe that was my XBox in need of cleaning.
Bottom line: Play this game, you can't go wrong if you like the genre.

"An all-around excellent game.", I got The Suffering because, when my girlfriend made me go with her to Walmart at 2am to buy an Xbox, it seemed like the best game there. I was worried because I really hate buying games without knowing them first, but man, I was very pleasantly surprised.
I give credit to the game designers for creating an all around out-standing game. The first thing that jumped out at me was the harsh language. I have been a long-time Nintendo enthusiest and i was definitly not prepared for all the cursing. I have no problem with it in my personal life, and it was highly appropriate considering the game starts out on Death Row.
The second thing I noticed was the fantastic graphics. Again, this is the result of never before using an Xbox, but the design and art execution is highly impressive as well as the graphics. You start the game by travelling through a prison where almost everyone has been murdered in a horribly gruesome manner. The blood splattering on the floors and walls is absolutely incredible. The designers must have put a lot of time in studying actual crime scenes because this looks REAL!!
The enemies also look fantastic, they all reflect the various forms of capital punishment that have been administered to the prisoners over the history of the prison. Example: a small impish creature pumped full of syringes represents those killed by lethal injection.
So the game looks amazing. No question about it. But how does it play? Even better!! all of the buttons are exteremely user friendly, the weapons are acurate and realistic. and the damage inflicted upon the demons (or other humans if you choose to kill them) is very gruesome.
this is definitly not a game for kids.
The violence is constant and very disturbing. you have constant flash backs and visions (very reminescent of The Shining, by Stephen King) a lot of which involve murdered women and children.
probably the most outstanding aspect of this game is the level design. These guys really went above and beyond keeping the levels fresh and new. even though the whole game is played on a prison island, you are constantly running into new types of environments and situations and they are all fitting to the story. you travel through the prison, the excercise yards, the beaches, a deserted psycho ward, the sewer system, and the woods around the prison.
anyway, this game is a bargain at any price! as soon as i beat it i went right back through it again to kill all the other prisoners and gaurds i helped along the way the first time. whether you kill the innocent or help them totally changes the story of the game. so the replay value for this is fair. not great, cause the game is a little short, but ive played it thru twice and will definitly play a third time.
