"Great after you've figured out how to set it up."
This was my first set of wireless headphones. I thought that you just plugged it in and it would work. It actually took me a little while to figure out how to get it working. I have a Sony tv I'm using it with and it doesn't have a headphone jack so I plugged the base into the output RCA jack. Then I had to turn the speakers on my tv off in the menu. Then I had to switch the audio setting to fixed instead of variable. Then I turned the switch on the headphones and the base to off and it worked fine.
I think the sound quality is really good. The reason why I gave it four out of five stars is that there is a slight static sound when there is a quiet moment on the show I'm watching. Most of the time I don't even notice the static. My only warning is that this set of headphones won't work on every tv set. You need to make sure your tv has an audio out RCA jack or a headphone jack.

"Works great, most of the time..."
This is my first set of wireless headphones. I bought them so my kids can watch TV in the living room at night without bothering me in the next room. I am using them with an ONKYO receiver, Satellite, PS3, and HD tv set up. I have the headphones tied into the receiver.

First time I tried them, there was a noticeable amount of static. The second time, however there was none. What changed? The time of day. The manual says that direct sunlight can interfere with the signal, and sure enough it does. My AV rack is near a window that gets a lot of sun during the morning (the first time I tried them), later in the afternoon when the window was in the shade the static was gone.

I have a large living room that is adjacent to our kitchen. I get good reception within the full TV viewing range.

The headphones are comfortable, although they tend to make my ears sweat after a while. I like the recharge base, and the overall look of the headphones. I didn't like the short (about 3 feet) phone jack cable that the unit came supplied with. I had to rearrange my stereo components to allow the cord to reach the headphone jack. Also, don't like having to plug/unplug them when I go to use them, but other than these minor annoyances, they sound great and get the job done.

"Cordless Headphones, Sony MDR-IF540"
I bought these headphones for my 83 year old dad who wears hearing aids in both ears. He can't hear the new tv. The hook up was simple and they worked great right out of the box. The instructions were simple and easy to read. Sony gives you a couple of different ways to plug in, depending on what set-up you have. They play loud enough for him and they don't make the hearing aids buzz. I feel that they are outstanding for the money and Amazon always makes buying from them simple and once again, a very good value.

"Good while they lasted"
I've owned these headphones for almost 5 months now. A little over a month ago, the sound started cutting out in the right ear. I was able to play around with it and move the headphones around and it'd come back. Annoying, but at least I could get it working fairly easily. Unfortunately, those days seem to be over as that doesn't quite do the trick anymore. The warranty was only for 90 days and they now charge about $25 to repair them (not to mention return shipping). I wouldn't recommend them unless you buy an extended warranty. Even then, they weren't exactly the greatest headphones in terms of sound. I'd recommend avoiding them.

"Only get this if you don't like quality sound"
Well, I had high hopes for this product. I should have known better. Basically, you get a lot of static no matter how you adjust the knobs. Nuff said. Always that background noise, no matter what. This will work if you are watching TV in bed and don't want to wake the wife, but forget any sense of realism if you want immersive sound in a gamer environment or quality live music. I returned my set after about 40 minutes out of the box. Plus, you have to really aim the IR transmitter perfectly just to get a decent signal, and it cuts out any time you move around or place your hand in front of your face. Much better to suffer the wire than to purchase this. Don't do it.

What our customer's say!

"The hissing is loud and impossible to stop", There are many reviews that state the hissing problem, but I decided to pull the trigger anyway since I was concerned about interference problems if I went with the traditional RF type headsets. These work as advertised but make a lot of loud hissing sounds that ruin quiet scenes in movies. Still a good deal ultimately by my standards since they work with any of the three infrared headsets I have from my minivan, so I don't need to purchase any additional headsets for late night movies while trying to keep the volume down. Recommeded purchase only if you can deal with the hissing problem that seems to be inherent in this particular model.

"good product", Sound quality is fine. The big advantage of these headphones is that you can still hear sounds in the room, so you can hear if someone is calling you, the phone rings, or a laundry buzzer goes off.

"Barely Adequate", Easy to set up, sound quality is fair. Thin, uncomfortable foam ear cushions and cheap plastic headstrap. Simple exercise motions enough to dislodge it from your head. Recharging system tacky - tricky to make charger align with contacts. LED transmitting lights didn't work.

To reduce hiss turn up source volume, turn headset volume down.

Barely good enough for casual, stationary use for limited time. Since I bought this primarily to use while exercising, I'll search out a more comfortable, better engineered model.

"Not with plasma TV", These definitely do not work with a plasma TV. The static was horrible and would not recommend them for this application.

"A good infra-red headphone for your money", This is exactly what I was looking for. Good sound, convenience, no hiss, perfect for wathcing tv without disturbing your sleeping wife.
I'm happy with this purchase and would certainly recommend.

"Sony headphones", I really like the headphones. When they go out of range the sound just cuts out. My other headphones produced loud fuzzy static when they went out of range. The surround sound is interesting, but I could leave it also. The vibration affect doesn't do that much for me, but you can turn it off if you want, which is nice. They fit nice and are light. The sound is first class. I would buy them again.

"Much better than radio wave headphones", Work well enough to enable me to hear TV without blasting wife. May have to
play with hookup to get clear sound. Found that audio hookup at cable box
worked MUCH better than hookup from TV. Attenuation switch is also a bit
tricky in that if wrong it will cause hiss to get worse so try both on and off.

Overall VERY pleased with phones!!!

"propietary battery and more", -reading the literature, planning ahead, and noticing the odd square plastic adapter ends on the supplied aaa batteries, one is left with the impression that when the rechargeable batteries eventually fail one will need to get Sony BP HP550 batteries. The only link I found was in Europe and they looked to cost more than the headset pkg.!!
You can of course use alkaline aaa: but be sure NOT to put them in the charger!!!=
Now, it may be that any rechargeable battery will work-but it is not apparent in the literature, and I don't know for sure.
I am especially sorry about this since I sent a pair to my brother in law after reading all the rave reviews!
Also, although headphone ear foam replacement is referred to in the nmanual, no part number or source is offered-as with the batteries...Give yourself a break: pick another brand.

In this day and age when it is hard enough to try to be GREEN, is SONY helping?

"Doesn't work with plasma TV", I wanted to like this product. I have a set of Sennheiser RS140 wireless headphones that has fairly mediocre performance (lots of hiss and static from the radio transmission.) I was hoping that the IR technology in the Sony headphones would overcome this.

After I plugged my new Sony headphones in and gave them a try with my TV, it was a hundred times worse than the Sennheiser. The sound was mostly static, with faint hints of barely-audible dialog. The sound would improve with certain scenes on my TV, such as dark indoor scenes, but then get far worse during bright outdoor scenes (such as on the beach in an episode of Lost).

After hunting through the manual, I realized the problem: Buried in fine print, there's a statement "Plasma displays may interfere with normal operation of this system."

Sure enough, my Pioneer plasma TV was causing huge amounts of interference with the IR transmission. The bright outdoor scenes apparently generated IR interference, with rendered the dialog inaudible.

Saying that a plasma TV "may interfere" with operations is an understatement. This product is completely unusable with my plasma TV.

If this problem had been advertised with a warning "not suitable for plasma TVs," I'd be understanding. However, hiding this problem in the small print is unconscionable. At least Amazon seems to have a good return policy, which will be used in this case.

"Great Headphones", I just wish they were a little less bulky but other than that I am very satisfied with the headphones.
