"Waste of time and money."
I bought the 6.0 upgrade without reading the reviews. Woe to the foolish. It slowed WORD to a crawl, brought DtSearch to it's knees, and twice locked my system up so tightly I couldn't get the task manager open.

I didn't waste any additional time seeing how slow it was at its own tasks. I'll take everyone's word for it.

Less than one day on the machine. I've gone back to 5.0.

"It's bader than James Brown (help me now- OW!)"
My personal favorite with SE is when you open a link on a web page that's a pdf and acrobat doesn't appear, and the page locks up, and as you're rebooting you notice that as the IE window closed there was an Adobe dialog box behind IE. Sadly, you could not get to it because IE was locked.

My next favorite part of 6.0 has to do with the time it takes from clicking a PDF on a fast server to the display time. The load time on Adobe can only be compared to the time it takes to get the last passengers on a TWA flight to put their bagage up - pitifuly slow and you wonder what's wrong with it.

I can open Word, all 26 megs of its little memory hogging self, 3 times in the time it take acrobat to open on a cranky day. I have not figured out what makes Acrobat so inconsistant, it's insane.

In conclusion, my last peeve with this software is that many programs I deal with (cough Final Draft) when you are attempting to print a run, end up as 2 seperate PDF jobs that you have to go in and combine later. While this may not be Adobe's issue, it sure would be nice to be able to wait to finish the file until you're ready.

"Acrobat 6.0 Standard is Slow and Lacks Critical Features!"
I am a big fan of Adobe. I am a Photshop addict and I use Acrobat frequently. However, I am very disappointed in the way Adobe has positioned Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard Edition. It seems as if Adobe intentionally crippled this product. Perhaps they did this so that corporations can deploy a version of Acrobat that doesn't make it as easy to edit unprotected PDFs, as is possible with 5.0. (This is a generous interpretation. Some people may conclude it's simply a bald-faced attempt at boosting revenue by forcing purchase of the more expensive Pro version.) I feel that the advertising material for this product does not fairly describe the limited feature set.

The first thing you notice is that the program is incredibly slow to start. This program should start as fast or faster than a word processor (i.e., Microsft Word), since it is used constantly mainly to read files.

Once you get over the interminable wait and have the program on your screen you immediately notice the deficiencies in the software. Acrobat 6.0 is missing many critical feature of Acrobat 5.0, including the catalog (index) and touch-up of objects (images). In addition (and amazingly), the pop-up search box is gone! To search inside a PDF requires launching an annoying pane that reduces the size of the window in which the PDF is displayed. Overall, I can't see that the product provides any enhanced usability. Even the "Read Out Loud" function is unusable because the speech is garbled. More irritations: The icons are too large, taking up excessive screen real estate. The column select function is missing; this was handy to properly select text in multi-column documents. (NOTE ADDED APRIL 1, 2004: After using the product for a while, I'm not sure that column select is really necessary in 6.0. Text selection may be more intelligent in this version of the program.)

NOTE ADDED APRIL 1, 2004: After using this product for several months, I have learned to like the was the search feature operates. Yes, invoking search does cause a large pane to pop-up on the right side of your screen, making it hard to read your document which is resized smaller. However, the results list provided by search gives you the context in which the search term is located and it is easy to jump to the desired point in your document. There are times that this type of search is much more useful than the jump through the document (Microsoft Word-like) search in Acrobat 5.0. However, the lack of the catalog (index) feature in Acrobat 6.0 is a major, major disadvantage. Adobe -- if you are listening -- the next version of Acrobat should have all three search capabilities: (1) catalog as in 5.0, (2) jump through the document search as in 5.0, and (3) results list search as in 6.0. For any given search situation, one of these search approaches will be superior. You really need all three. One final point: Integration of Acrobat 6.0 with Internet Explorer may be slightly better than for 5.0. Nevertheless, there are still times when running Acrobat 6.0 inside IE will hang your computer.

"Very mixed feelings..."
I use PDFs a lot and I must say that quite often I turn to Free PDF software to actually do the tasks that Acrobat fails to do. One area I have always had a problem with is the formatting of some documents in size and sometimes Acrobat simply fails to recognize them and so I switch to the Free PDF software which has no problems doing this and is easier to use.

However if you are a pro PDF maker who wants to add sigs and links and notes and chapters and all the other function tags including security tags then I recommend this product hands down as the best one. I just find that it is not always the best PDF software package in the world, but a good one all the same.

I would not recommend buying this one just to make standard PDF files alone. If you want to touch up those file then this is what you need to do that right.

"Avoid. Go with Scansoft PDF converter instead"
Too expensive and not good.
A better and cheaper way to manipulate PDF is to go with Scansoft PDF converter...for $49 the Scansoft product is much better.

"This product and its updates must be installed in order", I bought Adobe Acrobat 6.0 more than a year ago because someone told me that 7.0 had some glitches to watch out for. I have had to reload the 6.0 software at least 15 times because it hangs up or just stops working. I searched for answers online and finally learned that the problem comes from the updates not being installed correctly. You cannot have updates on the computer that are a later version than the software. I took off all versions of updates for both reader and acrobat and installed just 6.0. Then, I installed the updates and the latest version of Adobe Reader. I haven't had to reload the software since. Hope this helps someone resolve their issues with this product.

"Adober Acrobat 6.0 Standard", I have used this personally so purchased it for the office. (Someone in the office had purchased the 7.0 Professional Upgrade--but I had nothing to upgrade. By the time I got around to purchasing Standard, I could not find either 6.0 or 7.0 Standard anywhere, except at Amazon.com.) Upon receipt, it was exactly what I had purchased and the price could not be beat.

"Awful version - a huge step back", Either use version 7.0 or 5.0 --- maybe version 8.0 will return to the unobtrusive, easy-to-use roots of version 5.

This version has major bugs, is really slow, is constantly asking to download and install unrelated software, and adds no useful features (that I've found, anyway).

"Acrobat 6", I really think many of the visual upgrades made to Acrobat 6(over Acrobat 5) only made it more clumsy. The core product is still great.

"Acrobat 6.0 Standard will not create fillable forms", I upgraded from Acrobat 5.0 Standard to 6.0 Standard and promptly lost the primary function which I used the program for. In 5.0 Standard you can (and in 6.0 Standard you canNOT) take a regular PDF document and create fillable blanks and checkable boxes. In order to install 6.0 you are told to uninstall 5.0. You are told not to run both on the same machine. Once I uninstalled 5.0 I lost the functionality I needed.

"Upgrade is no help for Real Estate", As a Realtor who is pushing the envelope, attempting to move to digital file keeping, digital recording, digital faxing, and digital signing, the concept of Adobe Acrobat is extremely helpful. I've been using Adobe Acrobat since version 4. Version 5 was a very useful upgrade, worth every cent. Version 6 was a grand waste of money and has turned into a waste of time. Files take longer to save in Adobe Acrobat 6, but they do end up being smaller, so maybe there is a more advanced compression algorithm at work. Nevertheless, files do take about twice as long to save in the new version.
Furthermore, at least for my line of work, I see no useful additions to the software. The interface looks a little fancier, and a little more advanced with more curved lines and a splash screen with transparency...(everybody together now, "Oooooh, aaaaaaah"). But, at least for my line of work, I have not seen any productivity or security upgrades which make the investment worthwhile. Save yourself the money and stay with version 5.0.
Unfortunately, it seems that the other reviewers' negative comments are right on the money.

"Software unusable for signing documents in high throughput", I am a physician who has his medical records stored in PDF format. What I do is get documents in PDF format in a number of ways, and then electronically sign them. I annotate the files about a third of the time with short text notes. Acrobat 5 worked OK, but had a number of glitches such as not dealing with file names over 32 characters, crashed on paste into text areas, and it lost files on occasion. I expected version 6 would make a barely adequate product work in this environment.

The apparent rants by the other reviewers are, unfortunately, spot on. From my standpoint, version 6 is a frustrating product for what is such a routine task, signing documents. In version 5 you could touch key "d" and the signature cursor would appear, you selected where the signature would appear, and a press of the return key completed the signature.

In version 6 it works this way (once you set a number of preferences and your digital signature file): You use the mouse to click on the Sign Document tool button (The keystroke shortcut is gone - you HAVE to use the mouse), and up pops a dialog telling you that the document is not certified. You dismiss that dialog and another dialog pops up, where you select either visible or invisible mode for the signature (no way to set a preference, it ALWAYs pops up). You then get to draw the location for the sig. Then you get a dialog for why you are signing, like v5.x did, but now you have to go to the mouse and move to click the Save button, otherwise you get a save as dialog as the default. No way to preference that, either.

The save process is a joke, except that it works so poorly every time that it is VERY frustrating. The previous reviewer who commented on the slowness of the save was being kind. The software scans the file multiple times to perform a number of housekeeping tasks with every save, EVEN IF IT JUST DID THEM ON A PREVIOUS SAVE. I know this because there is a cheery status bar on the bottom left that explains why your time is being wasted. I timed myself on this: 68 documents in 2 hours and 12 minutes.

The Adobe people have made a number of decisions for the user on how to operate. This has caused a tremendous slowdown in workflow with 6 compared to version 5. The interface has lost a number of keystroke shortcuts, requires that you now switch between mouse and keyboard, and has added steps that induce fumbling in the interface and workflow.

A BIG STEP SIDEWAYS.

I am not going to use it at work unless some improvement in workflow is seen. I will not be able to keep up with my work with this poor interface, and I am only at about 25 documents a day to sign. Normally I get that done in 15 minutes, including time to annotate and do a few multiple saves on some of the docs. When I am at 50 to 75 signatures a day I would be spending an extra 2 hours a day at work if I needed to use Acrobat 6.0

Stay away from this one.

By the way, if you look at my other reviews you'll see I'm generally a level headed sort. But with the time waste I put up using this package compared to v5 I felt I really had to join in and warn everyone about this one like the other reviewers have.
