"Good features lousy engineering"
This program has good ideology, but is poorly written. The biggest problem is its memory management. If you are working with more than 3-4 hundred slides (they claim to be able to handle UNLIMITED number of slides) it can at anytime drop into a bizarre processing loop that appear to never end. And I mean - NEVER (hours). During that time you cannot do anything with it.
At the same time there may be plenty of resources like free memory (in my case I have 1 Gig of memory half of which was free) and CPU was not at all overloaded (10%). So this is just bad programming, since other similar software run fine on my machine with the same resources and much larger jobs. I was also quite annoyed when their customer support guy attempted to tell me that this is all my fault and 1 Gig is not enough memory. Its disgusting when these guys try to intimidate their less computer knowledgeable customers with such ridiculous tales. He stopped right after I told him how much memory was actually free! That practice prompted me to write this review. They should be ashamed of themselves.

When the memory management problems will be fixed this will be a very nice program for the price. It is not very easy to use because many features are scattered around quite haphazardly, but has tons of useful features and when you work with smaller number of slides produces very nice results and can be a tool of choice for slide shows. But for now its a disaster.

"They must be listening..."
I downloaded ProShow Gold v3.0 the other night after hours of toying around with 4 or 5 slide show programs that came with equipment packages. (I've done quite a bit of video editing and originally planned to use that software, but it squashed portrait photos and I needed to get a job done). After hours I could only conclude all "free" bundled software for slideshow editing is junk.

So I started up PSG 3.0 and found the interface was competant. There was room for my WMA, or MP3 or Wav audio which I pre mix with Music Studio. I imported the slides, set the auto timer to match the music and ran into my only problem with PSG3.0. It appears all of the slides load into RAM and if you have too many (I had 300 slides with I think 500 Meg on my laptop)the program chokes.

Now I knew 300 slides was more than I could expect any audience to watch anyway so I cut the number (and organized them using letter prefixes) then loaded 140. After that the program worked like a breeze.

There is quite a lot I have yet to do with this PGS3.0 and am anxious to start. The pan and zoom features are especially remarkable as they add an incredible amount of focus and grace to a production. My bottom line is that for $80 this is a program I can work with and can, together with a separate audio editor, create a slideshow I can be proud of.

"Patching ProShow Gold for Intel Hyperthreading Boards"
I put together a lot of rather large ProShow Gold programs (150 or more 2.4 MB TIFF slides plus music files that exceed 10 MB) and had many of the problems mentioned by others here. I found out that ProShow Gold - at least up to Version 2.6 - will not run on Intel boards with Hyperthreading unless one of the CPU cycles is turned off. I have brought this to the attention of Photodex since they had been unaware of the problem and I hope this will be fixed in their next version. Dual processor boards are now coming on the market and I don't think ProShow will work on these, either, because of the same reason.

Fortunately, assuming you are using Windows XP or XP Pro, The solution is fairly simple. Open ProShow Gold and then open the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and click on the Processes tab. Mouse down to Proshow.exe and do a right click on it and then click on Set Affinity. CPU 0 and CPU 1 will be checked. Uncheck one of them (it doesn't make any difference which) and exit Task Manager. ProShow will now work just fine.

Unfortunately, this has to be done each time you use ProShow. There is a way to patch the program so that it always uses just one CPU cycle, but I don't think a review here is the appropriate venue. If you contact me off-line I can tell you how it is done. It is not hard and anyone can do it.

"Great features, but UNRELIABLE"
This program looks great. The interface looks great, it's got a ton of options and some great features that allow an incredible amount of control. The problem is it doesn't work most of the time. My fiance and I waisted hours trying to recover a slide show that the program just randomly lost the ability to open.

It crashes a lot, gets stuck in extremely long render cycles with no progress indicator (you have to wait up to 30-40 minutes for it to render a show for full screen preview), and just has a ridiculously huge amount of glitches. Other reviews here are saying the exact same thing, please trust them!

A lot of other reviewers say that it is great for smaller slideshows...I'd agree, but if you got a big project, PLEASE don't make the same mistake we did and waste your time too...look for something better than this.

"Proshow Gold - A Roll of the Dice - Better to look elsewhere"
I have made some easy and fast slide shows, and I have had some heartbreaking crashes, hours of wasted time, and frustrating glitches using Proshow gold, especially the newer versions. I think this program is best if you plan to use 1) small image files (say a 4-6 MP camera). 2) jpeg files and not raw files 3) small numbers of slides 4) all images and sound files on the host computer. I have had serious, painful and timewasting problems with proshow I believe are due to using large image files, RAW image files, files stored on other computers on my network. Right now I would avoid this software for a few months (it is 11-2005 now).

What our customer's say!

"A small price to pay for excellent slideshows", Breathe new life into those photos and video clips, add some music and a little creativity, and you've got something everyone will be impressed with. The first question I usually hear when someone sees a slide/video show I created with proshow is "Did you do do this?", the second question is "How?". The price is right, it's very easy to use and packed with more features than you will ever need. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking to make great slide/video shows without lots of technical know how.

"Love the program", This program has never let me down. The tech support is great. They are available with a phone call. The program makes great DVD's. There are occasional updates. I have now upgraded to Pro show Producer in order to do a little extra. The music is easy to add on ProShow Gold. I am not a computer wizard, and I have taught myself but there are teaching videos on youtube and also on Photodex's website.

"Are you guys behind the times??", If I'm reading Amazon's ad correctly, they aren't yet offering version 3.2. If that's true, I can understand the many negative reviews for this program, as I understand that earlier versions apparently had numerous bugs.
For what it's worth, I've used the new 3.2 without a hitch so far, but I will say two things to qualify that. I've only made one program, of about four minutes' length, and there is one hiccup I've noticed when building a show.
While gathering images to make a show, I made the mistake of trying to import RAW files (those that hadn't been processed as TIFF or JPEG files), and when the program attempted to recognize them (which it obviously couldn't) it froze up. Only after this happened several times did I realize my mistake. Other than that, I haven't had any problems so far.
I would imagine that most people who would want to purchase PSG would do so to make shows of their own images, for personal use and at photo clubs. In that regard, this program really shines. Of course, you can have slides and transitions of any length, and the program will automatically revamp to the closest time to fit a musical piece that is about as long as your slide presentation. And as I understand it from looking at the program's menus, you can time slide lengths and transitions to high and low points in your musical background.
But enough of that stuff. You can just download a demo version from the company's web site, and make an opinion for yourself. Let's look at a couple of things that you won't immediately notice about this program. First, when you burn a DVD for PC presentation, even though you will do so on PSG's highest possible resolution (I can't imagine why anybody wouldn't), the image playback from the DVD will probably look soft. There's a solution for that, at least if you're using Microsoft's Media Player. Go into Media Player's DVD menu and check the box that makes the computer fit your program, then go back in and uncheck the box that makes your program fit the computer's parameters (there are two check boxes). And don't display your program at larger than 100 per cent, which should easily be large enough anyway.
The second thing I want to talk about is why I gave the program only four stars instead of what should obviously have been five (at least so far as I've used the program to this point). Although a lot of the program is intuitive, it is still quite complex. Yet, the best instruction that I've been able to find so far costs almost twice as much as the program itself. Photodex sells three hands-on instructional DVDs, for a total of about $150, which is the only type of in-depth guide that I've been able to find so far. I bought the DVDs because I'm a serious amateur photographer and have finally found a slide-show program that actually measures up. It didn't hurt that the very first show I made elicited glowing reviews.
For what I use it for, I recommend PSG very highly. However, if you too decide to buy it, try to first determine how much you'll have to spend on educational materials to get the best use of the features this program offers.

"ProShow Gold been using 3 yrs... a bit of a disappointment", I'm a professional photographer and bought this program that was endorsed by other outstanding photographers.

I've been using this software for 3 yrs now. I have truly loved it for it's ease of use. Drag and drop system. It's gotten better over the years as its gotten auto rotate on pictures and better music manipulation. This program is great for small productions. 20 to 50 pictures. The program can't seem to handle a whole lot. It constantly freezes and shuts down (it does have an auto save feature that they obviously needed). I've also had many problems with the writing process. It's wasted many a dvd for me. Not all dvd players recognize the burn as well.

For those who run on a network this is definitely not the program for you. I've talked with customer support and they stated to me that the program will not operate with pictures on another computer over the network.

Today I had my last straw with the program and will be finding something else.
Thanks!!! and good luck!!!

"Awesome program that totally smokes", WOW. 'bout time. After using ProShow Gold 3.0 for the past month, all I can say is yeowzaaa. This thing rocks. Jeepers it's fast and very very feature rich. Only thing is I wish it had a better photo editor, but getting FIVE STARS anyway. I feel sorry for those that buy this program, then attempt to run it on a feeble PC and expect not to have issues. Good grief, try this program on a pc that it is meant for, then come back here and post up.

As to the earlier suggestion about Affinity settings in Task Manager, on a dual core system, this program uses both processors by default.

Trying to convert 3-4 hundred slides while using only one half of one gig?!! Cripes, that's not enough RAM. And how does memory management problem equate to a poorly written program?! The cs guy stopped, because he realized who he was dealing with. I too wouldn't argue with someone that stubbornly believes that 512MB of RAM can process and convert 3-4 hundred slides. LOL

"A Winner !", (version 2.5.1635) After only 2 hours and 4 mistake CD's later (my fault) I produced my first SVCD with music. I found out by accident that the AVI movies that were in my photos folder could be added in as easily as the photo's, sound and all ! The drag-and-drop UI is very easy to navigate and the composition "fuel gauge" showing how full the resultant CD will get (ala Nero) is just what's needed.
All in all, its a pleasure to use. I haven't explored the niftier features such as subtitling and multiple compositions, MPEG output, email and web versions, but I expect them to be easy to use too. Oh yeah, I never even opened the Help feature !

"Not what I had hoped", This software seemed to be working great, until I tried to save the program to a disc. It then locked up several times and when I tried to reopen the slideshow, it wouldn't open it, it would just freeze up and not respond. The features to create the slideshow were wonderful, the reshuffle feature made it so easy to drop photos in and then randomize them. I also liked that you could see where in the music each picture would fall. The preview of the show was great, however now I cannot even view that. I spent several hours, loading pictures and music, formating them so they were just perfectly placed and saved the file. Now I have nothing to show for all those hours of work. Somehow the software needs to be improved.

"Mom recommended...", After looking at several options... this was it, no question. Customer technical help was easy to reach. I was able to create a really neat show. And I like the web site where you can look at contest winners and learn a few tricks to use on your own home show. However, make sure you save the shows as files, or if you move pictures to other locations, you will be recreating and/or relocating. However, the DVD produce version did not work in my older DVD machine, but did run on the computer.

"NOT PROFESSIONAL GRADE YET", I have owned and used this software to make a number of slide shows over the last year and a half. In that time it is indeed true many improvments have been made. My first use was with version 1.2 and I am now using version 2.0 build 1589 or 2.1589. There have been so many glitches it seems that new builds or versions arrrive, at times, every few weeks. This should be encouraging as it demonstrates a commitment to continuously fix and improve the software. If you own the software all these updates are free and easily downloaded from the Photodex website.

I agree with some of the other reviews in that it is exceptionally easy to produce basic slide shows. However, use of some of the more advanced features needs work. I am specifically not pleased with the functionality of captions and sounds being attached to indivudual slides. In version 1.XX the captions were "attached" to a slide such that using two duplicate slides back to back allowed you to fade in a title or caption over a specified length of time as you transitioned to the second slde with the caption attached. This capability was lost in 2.0. An option was soon added allowing a caption to float above the transition [remain on screen] between slides allowing this same effect to be simulated but the result is not as smooth. On the flip side allowing captions to function separately from an indivudual slde has allowed for a host of really cool caption effects. The current caption fade in/out option would be greatly improved if the timing of the fade could be controlled. Additionally, some of the other effects such as zoom in/out and pan effects are not smooth. These glitches are even evident in some of the slide shows I have viewed on the Photodex website.

The good news is Photodex seems upfront in that they publish what was fixed in each version [build #] and it is evident they are continuously improving the software. Do I consider this a profession grade product? Not yet. Am I going to continue to use and upgrade this software? You bet. By the time Photodex releases 3.0 or perhaps 4.0 they should have the best slide show software on the planet. It is worth the money.

"Bugs appear to be out", Excellent program for creating photo presentations. Earlier versions may have been buggy, but it appears that the major kinks have been worked out (though a few small things here and there could be improved).

Program outputs your presentation on to a CD for computer viewing, DVD or VCD for viewing on television or uploads it to the Proshow website.

The program is straight forward enough for a novice to get started and I was impressed at the level of sophistication that you could drive your presentation to (if you so desire). I've been looking for sometime for this type of program and so far -- I'm impressed and can recommend it.
