"Lame Duck!"
I have had nothing but problems with this product. I bought it a year ago and tried throughout the year to get it going. I tried emailing technical service, but still have not heard a response from them. My wife and I just moved into our new home and I was setting up our home office. I decided to try this product one more time. Didn't work. Could not recognize the IP address. I went online to Amazon and found Chris and Online Techie's information very helpful. One more try for the gipper. It worked! So for one day, I have a print server. Let's see if it continues to work.

"Shoddy stuff"
I seldom get to the point with a product where I will write reviews, but people need to be warned. I am a cto of software company, 48 years old and cut my teeth on: VAX, 360, C64, Z80's, 6502, AMD 9511/12, AppleII, Lisa, Fortran, Basic, C, C++, RS232, HP Logic Analyzers, etc. I don't think I have done it all, but I have done a ton of it. My wife (who's account I am using), has a unmodified 6 mos old HP laptop with XP/SP2, my daughter an e-machine (4 mos old) also running XP. These boxes need to share a brand new lexmark printer. I could not make it work out of the box no matter what I did with the config utility, or either XP box. I came to Amazon and saw Chris from California (posted oct 17) had it figured out. Applied his suggestion and had it working in 30 seconds after 2 hours of messing with the IO gear manual. Piece of junk not worth the time. The manufacturers need to make this stuff work right the first time, otherwise at $50 its not a good deal at all because of the time it cost me. IOGear, never again.

"Not for the novice"
I finally got mine to work, but only after a struggle. All the comments are right - the documentation is of little value, especially for XP users, so you end up puzzling it out for yourself.

For what it's worth, here's what I found (I was plugging the print server into a Microsoft wireless router, and using it to drive an Epson 2200 printer.) The device picked up an IP address from the router's DHCP, but after all the warnings I'd read, I decided to play safe and assign it a fixed IP address. The XP firewall (I'm using XP2 Professional) did not affect it (BTW, the firewall automatically assigned port 9100, which is standard for printing.)

The instructions said assign the printer to a network port, but I'll be damned if I could find that as an option, so I chose a TCP/IP port instead. I chose LPR as the protocol. However, by doing this, I found that I had to assign a port name and a queue name, which I got from the printer server's Admin program.

Having done all this it works fine - much better than my old configuration where I was using an old Windows 98 computer as a print server. No problem printing big Photoshop files etc.

Hope this helps you.

"Save your money, buy my 'used' unit - big discount"
Reviewer: bc53 from Merrimack, NH USA
I read the reviews, saw the pessimism, and still bought one. Now I'm sorry. Apparently it works great if you have an HP printer; mine is a Canon. I've tried everything, even sent it back (they said it "tests OK" and sent it back to me). I'm running Windows XP - followed all directions, set up the network print port. It sees the printer - printed a test page, but nothing else since then. Spent time with tech support... If you want one of these, contact me and I'll sell it cheap - hate to see it go to waste.

"Not happy, tried really hard to be"
I first purchased the 802.11b version of this USB printserver. It didn't work. I tried serveral access points including the Cisco CS1100, and the netGear MR812v2. Ended up sending it back to get the wired version in hopes it would clear up the problems. After hasseling with their support they finally granted me an RMA, but I had to fight for it. Two months later, I got a replacement unit. Then they billed me for a new unit! More problems I didn't need. The thing did work for a while, and is now on the fritz again.

I'm not going to bother with it anymore. I could have built a print server for the amount of time I have put into this afair. Stay away from these jokers, unless you have a lot of time on your hands, and money you like to give away for products that are not ready for prime time.

What our customer's say!

"Good box, obscure configuration.", Just bought this used and I thought I would post how to get it to work.

1. If you're using XP, you must have IPX protocol enabled. Then use the iogear print monitor application to configure IP.

2. If you're using OSX, you must use appletalk to connect to this print server. Alternatively you can use IP (lpr) if you configure the GPSU01's IP configuration via a windows box first.

If you want a print server that just works, you should look for something else.

"Deceptive product and business!", Beware! This print server does not work for all-in one printers and they do not disclose this anywhere on the manual nor their website. Be also aware of 15% restocking fee plus shipping charge that ANT charges, information which is not disclosed anywhere on their webstie!!! There is no way of talking to a live person, only via emails which they give themselves one business day to reply. Took me 4 days to find out about the return info and to get the RMA number. I would NEVER shop at Atlanta Network Techonologis, Inc. again.

"Nice price if it only worked", Well, this works for two out of the five PCs now...not very useful. When the AC outlet supplying the power to the server went out, the functionality never came back after the power came back on. The PS Admin software can't see the print server, even though I know the connection is there because another PC on the network can still print on it. Too frustrating. The HP server with HP JetAdmin costs more, but life is too short to deal with this piece of #@#$%.

"EASIEST, BEST CONSUMER PRINT SERVER EVER!!!", This was the EASIEST piece of hardware I have EVER set up on my network, and I have set up tons of stuff! I tried a netgear print server the week before and after a whole day trying to get it to work with my Brother MFC 4800 i gave up. Windows only software sucks too. So i bought this cause it said on the box is support Rendezvous, Apple's zero config network software. Came home plugged it in, no software installation required, just went to Printer Setup Utility, hit add printer, and boom, it showed up right there, printed a test page, came right out! Also instaled it on my mom's ibook without having to install anything, took 30 seconds to get it installed and printing! Insanely easy, you'd have to be crazy to buy anything else if you own macs!

"It's Great", I have just purchased and installed this print server and I am more than satisifed. I followed the instructions which were complete and easy to understand and was up and running in less that 1/2 hour. There was no trouble with the network recognizing the server and it works flawlessly with my HP 1300 mutifunction printer. Great buy!! Would highly recommend to all.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Great Product!!!", i was reading all these reviews and did not agree with any of them. opened the box installed it and it worked fine. i had no problems at all. the product works great with my hp deskjet. only incompetent people would have problems with setting up this unit. it's pretty straight forward. i feel sorry for all these people who think they are really smart techies or give themselves prestigious technical job titles can't install a simple device as this. i mean if you don't know anything about computers then don't pretend to.

"I am sure it's great...IF IT WORKED!", Tried installing this thing using a Lexmark z23 printer (listed as a compatible printer). After installing it once without luck, I downloaded the latest drivers...still no dice. I was using two XP machines without success.

It gets an IP address from my router and I can "ping" it from the browser interface, but I just can't print. One machine did nothing while the other one just fed the paper through. Neither printed a single character.

I really cannot recommend this device.

"Give a Static IP Address", As the documentation is really poor (why the 4 stars), you'd better plan to assign a static IP address to this device before installing the SW. You may do that with your router based on the MAC address of the device (see sticker on the back).

Then install the software, and so wheter you use dynamic DHCP with your computers, the IP address of the said printer server will remain the same, precluding then lot of nightmare afterwards :)

"Terrible terrible service, incorrect web site", I purchased this (not at Amazon but at a brick & mortar site) item as their website listed "incompatible printers" and mine wasnt listed. I opened it up and tried it out and it didnt work. I tried many things (updating drivers etc) and still nothing. The only way to contact IOGEAR for help was email. I emailed for help and no reply. I returned the item and lost 15% restocking fee. A MONTH LATER IOGEAR replied saying I should have known it was incompatible. HUH? What am I? A mindreader? No further response, apology, explanation or even my lost 15% was given. CRAPPY service, slow response and unreliable information. Spend your hard earned cash on a device made by a more reputable manufacturer.

"Pretty good print server", I went with this print server over the Netgear one due to it being less then the Netgear while offering the same features. The setup of the print server is pretty easy and straight forward but there is one thing to look out for. If you are running any type of software firewall on your pc then the print server most likely won't be found. If you are running the built in internet firewall on Windows XP,the server won't be found. If you disable the firewall then the admin software will find the server.

I sent a email to their tech support asking for the port number that I could open up on the firewall. Their tech support replied in a resonable time with the port number but the server still can't be found with the firewall active.

One other note. The box states that the print sever works with Apples OS X. This is only true if your printer is a post script printer. I was able to easily have OS X find the print server but the print jobs came out garbled.

Other print servers of this type by other manufactures have these same issues so it's not a issue with Iogear.

Overall, the product has performed as expected.
