"It's been several years and I'm still looking for a better game!"
There are quite a few space sims and flying sims in general, but Freelancer is unique. Here's what makes this game unique:

Online co-op multiplayer.
Dedicated server that YOU can own and control.
Real time missions and flying.
Many mods.

There are a number of multiplayer space sims and flying sims that are good (and also very old). Some decent ones included the Star Wars X-wing/Tie fighter series and Freespace series, as well as a number of WW2 based games. However, all are mission based, so you have to select a mission, ready the mission, then launch, wait for it to end, rinse and repeat. Freelancer isn't like that. Your buddies (or enemy players, for that matter), can be in the middle of selecting a mission, can be retrofitting their ship, trading goods, blasting baddies, or being a wingman for you, all at the same time, so this game best approaches a MMORPG (without the RP, I suppose). Oh, if only they'll release the next version of this game!

"Immersing solo player experience"
Have never played Freelancer multi-player. Have never added any of the mods. My only experience with Freelancer is as a solo player and this is one of the most immersing games I have played. I like playing in a dark room with nobody around and this game really takes you away. If you are looking for a great solo experience then you can't go wrong here. Exceptional value!

"MODs make this game replayable over and over"
Ok, I am old. I grew up with Ataris which cost then as much as Xboxes do now. Commodor-64 had "Elite" which is like Freelancer, but no plot at all. When the Intel 486s came out, I played the thematic godparents of Freelancer (Strike Commander, Wing Commander, WC Privateer) and LOVED these old games. Yeah, ok, I need Geritol, but these games are better than the garbage that is TV today.

The control system took a little getting used to, but is pretty easy and enjoyable once you see why the mouse control is important vs joysticks. The universe in the storyline is not "quite" open ended. You still have to do "x" to progress. However, even knowing the story still leaves you a LOT of time to explore the universe and get your rear end shot off if you are not careful. A truly enjoyable game.

I have played Freelancer several times through using different MODs. I truly enjoy the MOD Manager for this game as it allows you to employ multiple MODs.

Some MODs are quaint and just improve a few weapons or your max speed (thank God for that at least). Others change the entire dynamic of the game and universe. One even has the old Privateer ships in it. Another let's you use a really nice gun-only freighter which outguns the Corsairs and even some capitol ships (but you pay a lot for it) or let's you pilot a Cylon Raider from the original Battalstar Galactica series with a very cool energy torpedo system.

All in all, the games with the player modifiable systems are wonderful and the ones I find myself playing over and over again. Freelancer, Doom 3, UFO Aftershock, and others fall into this great catagory.

"Great Game"
I have been playing this game for about 4 years, now, and I still love it. The online games offer an incredible ammount of new experiences with the Player Modifiable system.
There are many mods on different servers available and easily installable.
Provides endless hours of entertainment!!!

"Fast, Fun, and Full of Charm"
If I have any complaint for this title, I would have liked to generate my own character.... (grumble, grumble)

That being said, Freelancer is just good ol' shoot-em-up/RPG/trade simulation gaming. Visually, I'm reminded of the displays from Bang! Gunship Elite and/or Colony Wars, and the gameplay is reminiscent of Syd Meier's Pirates. It's meat & potatoes gaming... but the whole is definitely more than the sum of it's parts. Nothing here stands out more than any other space sim, but the depth and size of the game universe will humble you. That's the way it's supposed to be.

AND... you can play darn near the whole game using just the mouse. Lazy armchair captains (that's me!) Rejoice!!

If you're looking for that old-school Traveller RPG adventure sim, give this a shot. It's easy to get into. And it's very large.

What our customer's say!

"Great space trading game", If you just want to trade, the story can get in the way, but the game is a lot of fun if you can play along with the story line. Unlike Privateer, it doesn't take forever to upgrade your ship, and there are lots of ships to choose from. Some are heavy haulers with turrets and lots of armour, while others are lite, nimble little scouts, with little armour, little firepower, be great maneuverability. The combat situations really depend on you knowing how to make the best use of your ship.

The story line is interesting, but seems very linear. The story unfolds in a way that helps you find you way around and which areas are safe for your skill level.

Good game overall, even as old as it is, if you want a space trader, this is about the only choice.

"Freelancer review from a freelancer", Freelancer is a great game with replay value. Had difficulty access MMORPG servers, still trying to find out how, that is kind of dissatisfying, but the graphisc and ease of play are very intriguing. I play this game often. One of the best Space games I have played.

"A little like GTA3 for outer space... except without the muggings", This is what they truly mean by "open-ended gaming". Yes, you can lament the lack of multiplayer. You can also lament the too-short storyline (at least its longer than Call of Duty). You can even gripe about the lack of joystick interface (yeah, the mouse-only driving is what cost this review a star).

But you cannot lament the range of ways to play this game. You can run with any group, any time, even the ones you've run missions against or just blown up and robbed (thanks to convenient bribes). There are a number of easter eggs to find (hidden joys), and quite a few sectors that don't get visited in the course of the plot, to give you something to do once you've beaten this game.

While it does get repetitive after a while, most games do. I mean, you can only take so many approaches and kill so many targets before you're done and should really get some sleep, right?

An excellent game. I wish they'd consider a sequel.

"Wish they came out with part 2", I like this game. There are sites devoted to modding and what ever you could think of which has helped make it live a very long life.

This game is very stable and intuitive. It's the best space simms so far that have played.

The only big disappointment is that there is no Freelancer two.

"Awesome but a needs more content", Freelancer is an awesome game. The gameplay is incredibly addictive and the control system is really nicely user friendly. I had a great time playing through the single player campeign. My only gripe about the game is the shortness of the SP campeign I got through it in 3 days. Once done with the single player campeign there is loads to do but after a while. I had max level and plenty of money and the best ship and the best guns and there was really nothing left to do. Apparently there are some huge mods that add loads of content to the game, maybe they would spruce it up a bit.
Really though, this game is awesome and I would suggest it to anyone. I don't usually play space sims but the role playing elements and the awesome control system in Freelancer made it a whole new experience.

"Best Space Game Ever", 45 systems to explore
160+ bases and planets to land on
30+ ships to fly and upgrade
37+ commodities to trade
Hundreds of different weapons to use

Gameplay:
The game handles very well; you do not often see a space sim that is mouse controlled which equals great fun. You learn how to fly and to use docking rings, trade lanes, jump gates and other things during your Single player career. Very cool way to implement a tutorial.

Factions:
There are many different factions in Freelancer, from the beginning, some will love you and others will hate you. You can divide all the factions into 3 major groups:

Law Enforcement (House police, Military, Bounty Hunters etc.)
Corporations (Gas Miners Guild, Spa & Cruise, etc.)
Criminals (Liberty Rogues, Outcasts, Corsairs, etc.)

Trading:
Each ship has a different amount of cargo space, fighters have low amounts of cargo space, while freighters can fit much more cargo, a freighter is essential to make a good profit while you are trading. Trading is quite simple, you buy goods on a planet or base for a low price, then travel to another planet or base in another system and sell them with profit.

Mining:
Mining is quite simple; you just fly towards a mineable area on your map, hang dead in space and shoot little asteroids that come floating by.

Scavenging:
You can also go around and search for old derelict ships, which contain special guns, missiles, mines etc. and cargo. They are scattered throughout the systems in nebulas, asteroid fields and other hard to find places.

NPC's:
FL also features a large amount of interface with NPCs (Non Player Characters). You meet them everywhere, in bars, equipment dealers, ship dealers and commodity traders. You can engage in a conversation with people in bars, they can tell you rumors, give you missions, bribe factions for you or you can even buy information on planets and shipwreck locations. When you go to an equipment dealer, ship dealer or commodity trader there will be a person there you simply click on them to buy stuff etc.

Graphics:
The graphics in this game are absolutely stunning even when played on the lowest resolution (800 x 600 pixels). The game utilizes DirectX 9, and does so very nicely. There is a lot of detail in this game; you can shoot off other ship's guns, shields, wings, and various other parts of the ship. There is smoke coming out of badly damaged ships and they often try to run away from you as well. It is amazing to watch a battle between two or sometimes more factions going on from a distance, you will see missiles flying around in all directions, ships shooting everything that moves you will even hear communications from the battling ships.

Using trade lanes and jump gates is also an amazing experience, the animations that you experience are just amazing, traveling though tunnels of light really adds to the game.

Mod's:
Freelancer has a ton of mod's for it just search for Swat-Portal or The Lancers Reactor both sites are fan sites and both have a lot of information on the game including hundreds of modifications.

In all Freelancer is the best Space Game Ever.

"Smashing", Great game to play takes a little getting used to.The higher you get the harder the game is to play

"Well done space adventure.", Not to say Freelance doesn't have its' drawbacks--it does--but they are easy to overcome. Simply, you go the LancerReactor web site and download your choice of modifications. One of mine is Discovery 4.82. This modification adds more equipment, money, weapons, ships to the game during the story and after.

The story, I seem to remember, ends at about level 27 with over thirty levels possible. Futhermore there are, I guess, about 25 or 27 solar systems involved with the storyline game...I count a total of 57 or 58 solar systems on the game board. Lots of places to go and explore after the game has ended. (Off the record, I wish Bungie had placed one or two 'wandering variables' in the game after the story had ended. This would have given you something to equip your ship for and to make more money for...afterall, you can't whip a level 50 ship with a level 7 ship, and if you don't get the best ship possible--fully dressed out--soon enough, THEY MIGHT WIN!

What do I mean by a wandering variable? In this case it would have been nice if another invader had entered that part of the galaxy...they send out super fighter craft that are level 50 with four fighters inside them at level 20. There mission would be to gather up mineral resources and fight anybody who interfers with them...sooner or later the mother ship would appear for the 'big fight'. This type of X factor can wander all over the starsystems and be unpredictable where and when. It would have given you something else to prepare for than just fight single and groups of fighters of they same type you've fought a dozen times before.

Nevertheless, I like Freelancer. I've had it for acouple of years and played it many times. You'll get tired of it after you've played it through the storyline 2 or three times...you put it away and play your other games, and then sooner or later you want to go back. Play the story line again, go to that one solar system you haven't searched yet...why not be trader this time, or a pirate.

So finally, dispite any complaint from the other reviews, if you like the idea of this type of game you should get it--there are a lot of Mods for it out there. If you do buy it, my advise is download the free Discovery 4.82 from Lancer Reactor and add it to the game the first time.
Bye!

"Good game with Extreme community support", This is one of only a few flight/space sims that I have played, but it has become one of my standards for judging other games that I come across. It is truly remarkable in scope, taking countless hours to fully explore the sector.

While the single player campaign introduces the player to all of the elements of gameplay that one will need to continue advancing and exploring the rest of the systems that were not forced upon the player, it is somewhat restrictive in freeform advancement potential.

The multiplayer cuts the campaign out of the gameplay and leaves all the choices up to the player, though having to start over at lvl 1 on every server can get a little old, though it helps to ensure that ships are not hacked.

There are a few things that can be nitpicked, such as the solars do not orbit, the economy is often haphazard and not dynamic at all, the different governments have completely different tech levels for their ships, somewhat counter-intuitive to the story in some instances (Liberty). Also, if you played the Starlancer games in their entirity, you may note a slight storyline deviation in the game startup video. The only potential dealbreaker would be Microsoft's horrible support for their games, but luckily all of this and more can be overcome.

The community support for Freelancer is outstanding for a game that was not intended to be modded. I have rarely seen such devoted development teams as those that make and continue to update mods for Freelancer. Only games such as Diablo II, Neverwinter Nights, TESIII: Morrowind and TESIV: Oblivion have or had similar community support. The most useful and simple mod out there is the Open SP mod that allows you to basicly turn single-player into a one person multiplayer, it tags the story as completed, so you can make your own choices from level one. Some of the more comprehensive mods are hundreds of Megs in size and address economy, added ships, systems, and equipment, rebalanced house technology levels, random encounters with capital ships, open access to story line only systems or alternate versions for non stroy line access, amongst other things. One is even a Total Conversion to a Star Wars universe. The most common source for Freelancer mods would probably be the Lancer's Reactor. Given the scope of the original game and that of any given mod, the replayability is unlimited and until a Freelancer 2 or new Starlancer game appears, the community support is unlikely to fade for the forseeable future.

So, to sum it all up, if you like space fighter sims, get this game, the potential drawbacks can easily be overcome by the community and then some.

"Addicting and fun!", I was a big fan of the Wing Commander games, and always wanted to see a Wing Commander style game that was open-ended. Well here it is, Freelancer is an addictive game full of hours upon hours of gameplay. I only have a few problems with the game (1) It's anoying that you can't play any jobs if the story mode is active unless you advance to the next level. (2) After you reach level 8 I beleave or 7, suddenly everyone want's to kill you and this can make the game very frustrating, if you just want to explore, because they always atack you when you're miles from a jump gate, and have no shields left. (3) Most of the ships only let you carry about 15 shield batterys at a time which last about a minute in an intence dog fight against 10 fighters and 2 battle ships! Other then that the game is great. I highly recomend it to any fan of the Wing Commander games, or anyone who enjoys open-ended games that give you almost total freedom to roam.
