Others say...
"Space-based strategy for lesser PC's" The genre of space-based strategy simulation is one particular area that has not recently received much attention. The arrival of "Sins of a Solar Empire" for Windows Vista is rather recent, but pretty advanced for some computers. Homeworld 2 offers quite a lot of fun for an inexpensive package.
Despite Homeworld 2's limited application in single-player campaign gameplay, mods such as "Complex" add tons of breadth to the game and really flush out its characteristics. Although I have not played the original Homeworld, and therefore cannot judge the sequel based on its predecessor, I can say that there is rarely a dull moment in this game. The customizability of ship badges was a nice touch, as is the ability to adjust the color scheme of your fleet.
However much fun the game is, I cannot give it a full score due to its short single-player campaign and the limited amount of races playable. While these are the results of the storyline that was created for the game, I believe that it could have been expanded to three or even four races and made a much more competetive and open-ended game. Still, for such a low price, this game was a great bargain and it is sure to stay on my hard drive!
"Immersive and entertaining" Okay, there's a lot of griefing in some of these reviews about Homeworld 2 being 2 hard. Wah wah wah.
I'm more of a RPG, turn based fan. I don't like Diablo style games, first person shooters and real time games are usually a little too fast twitch for my fingers. But I got Homeworld 2 anyway--I've got an older machine, so I cast around for games that will still run on it--and have enjoyed it immensely. It is hard, there's no doubt about that. You can't possibly hope to just zerg the computer into submission by building waves of ships to overwhelm the AI. You've got limited resources, first of all, and the AI puts up a good fight.
The graphics in this game still hold up even years after its release. Unlike most 2 dimensional space-based games (Starfleet Command, many of the Star Wars games) you've got to think in 3 dimensions. There's nothing so satisfying as sending a squadren of fighters swooping down (or up) on a fleet of unsuspecting frigates. Due to some of the limitations on firing arcs on ships, this does become an important strategy.
No level is unbeatable, but you'll sweat it out trying to get through them. I've had to take a step back and try a different approach a couple of times, but eventually I got through. You will spend hours on each mission, but whose in a rush to play through such an enjoyable game?
My only complaint is that my ships sometimes get minds of their own. I'll give them an order to engage a particular enemy, and sometimes they'll see something shiny rolling across the floor and get distracted. It's annoying, but if you stay on them, they'll do what they are supposed to eventually.
For others who might be put off by the hectic pace of a real time game, be advised there is a pause button that allows you to stop action, issue orders and continue when you are good and ready.
So grab yourself a copy of Homeword 2 and give it a whirl. It's well worth the price, which is considerably lower than the initial release. I think you'll enjoy it.

"Homeworld 2" Very good game at a very good price. Despite its age, Homeworld 2 still holds up graphically. While complex, the tutorial missions do a good job of keeping the learning curve reasonable. You should be able to understand most of the game's features in only a few hours, which is quite good given the complexity of the game. There also are not many recent space strategy games as detailed as Homeworld 2.
"Great sequel" Excellent upgrade for the best graphic game ever created. Homeworld has outstanding game play and Homeworld 2 made that even better with the added scrolling camera views. Gives you the real feeling of the vastness of space and the effects of not being limited to the basic 2D battlefields. Hope the developers expand and make it a triology. Greatly written storyline to keep up with the homeworld tradition.
"Just a great game any way you spint it, don't miss this one." Any real PC gamer has played or at least heard of the original Homeworld and what a fantastic RTS it is. Well Homeworld2 is basically the original Homeworld with better graphics, a new online gameplay and better AI. The story is basically identical to the original Homeworld so you will not really be getting much story wise assuming you have played the original. However the gameplay is so great that it can easily be overlooked, I highly recommend this game to anyone who is a PC game collector like myself or to anyone who is looking for a good RTS and loves space sim type games.

What our customer's say!
"gorgeous sequel", The music is inferior to the first...
the graphics and explosions are still amazing years later... the bone chilling groan of a ruptured capital ship brings these metallic ships to life.
certainly a must play, just like the original.
"Strategy lovers- buy this game", An extremely fun (albeit difficult) game, that not only forces you to find good combinations and formations of ship types and numbers, but also forces you to think in 3 dimensions.
"Homeworld 2 is a awesome game. ", This is a awesome game and it came really fast. I'm so glad I got it.
"A Milestone In Gaming", An easy to play and very intuitive game experience. It is an old one but I had to revisit this classic. A compelling story and far ahead of its time real time combat throws you into space warfare on a grandscale.
Recommended for those who want to pick up or relive gold moments in gaming history as one might with Starcraft, Diablo etc.
"Thumbs up !", I really like this game. The price was great. I do wish i had did a little more research i might have sprung for the Sins of a Solar Empire which is made by the same people but even more game play. Might want to check both out. I still like my choice and I will wait for the price of the new game to come down a bit. The mail was a little slow but i did get my package ok. Amazon is the way to buy with gas going up. P.S. Works with Vista 64 bit Ultimate OS. Recomend downloading patch (homeworld2_update_en_10_11).

"Great game and it's successor", This is a great game, especially since it was released 5 years ago. It still holds it's own as one of the best space games ever. (By the way, I noticed a few reviews mentioning technical difficulties. Be sure to download the game software update from the Homeworld 2 website on the support page.) If you want a game centered around space based combat and commanding fleets of ships without a bunch of cartoonish junk, this is your game.
For those who already have this, or have been searching for a newer, more advanced and complex game of this type, check out EVE-Online. That game is so elaborate you could literally step into another life in a vast universe with everything from different professions, economies, wars, corporations, politics, commerce, governments, and a vast universe of over 5,000 systems, each with planets, space stations, and more to visit. It's the ultimate evolution of sci-fi space games.
"Secret requirements prevent game from running", My son bought this game because he enjoyed the previous Homeworld. Thanks to undisclosed -- or at least poorly documented -- system requirements we cannot run the game on our machine. Sending it back would cost more in shipping costs than it is worth, so he is stuck with the game hoping that our next computer meets the secret requirements. Vivendi support is not helpful. After this experience we won't be buying any more games for PCs. Only games for consoles and Macs, which have standardized hardware platforms.
"Great Fun", This is just as much fun as the first game. Better graphics, and the same great control system. There are areas of the campaign that will be way too hard for the casual gamer, but if you really liked the first game, you'll love this one too.
"Didn't work on my system", I have Homeworld I, and it rocks. I had hoped Homeworld II would have been cool. WRONG! It loaded onto my machine, and played the opening storyline just fine. After that, it locked up. No matter what I did, nothing. Maybe I had a bad copy, I don't know. If you get this, you better be sure.
"Remember how good Homeworld was? Prepare to be disappointed.", The graphics are improved, the engine is improved, the game play sucks. No longer are you thinking about what to build, how to maneuver your formations and where to have them focus. This is bigger picture, and I honestly think it takes most of the fun away from the old one. If they only improved the originals graphics and added a few more ships and another great story. This story is terrible, and almost non existent. No book breaking down everything for you like the original had, no feeling of discovery, and none of the personal attachment or feeling of control you felt in the first one. Formations have been replaced with types of doctrinalish tasks like Frigate Screen. Instead of building your own formations out of whatever you liked and moving it how and where you liked, now you build fleets you have little control over. Not gratifying. You don't build individual units like you did in the first one, except on the frigate and above level. Now you build little wings of 3 or so that do your bidding. The worst thing they screwed up was the research. No longer do you research for you fleet in general, now every ship must have a research facility installed on its actual superstructure (read: money invested in worthless technology you already own on another vessel to move on to the next stage...). Lots of money spent on the R&D. Nothing was simple about this game, and Sierra let us all down. Great ideas like upgrades and disabling specific portions of enemy capital ships sound great in theory, but fail to turn into fun once the gaming starts. If you never played the first one, maybe this will be satisfying, but I have my doubts. Look elsewhere. If you enjoyed the first one, don't bother with this one, look elsewhere. Or stick with the original. Think of it like the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies that you wish never existed.
