Others say...
"A Real Time Strategy Game that needs some Strategy" If this was the first Command and Conquer game I had ever played, then I would probably rate it higher.
However, I played the first Command and Conquer and for all intents and purposes this latest incarnation of the C&C series suffers from the same faults as the first.
-----------
In summary:
The Good:
- The graphics look quite pretty, including explosions, missile launches, etc.
- It's pretty easy to control and pick up if you have played any other real time strategy game.
The Bad:
- The game plays much similar to the original C&C. You forage for resources, build bases and fight a war of attrition against enemies. There is no real strategy involved.
- It becomes simply a race to get special weapons and hardware and from then on you wipe the floor with your opponents. Or alternatively they arrive at your doorstep when you are vulnerable and you get annihilated.
- Some of your vehicles can stand idle while enemies fire on them and they won't respond unless you intervene.
- All the opposing sides are basically similar. They all build bases, amass troops and go over to the enemy camp to try to damage the opponent. The development of the terrorist/guerrilla-type faction the GLA could have been interesting, but like their opponents, they are tied to fixed permanent bases.
- One of the most horrible features of the C&C series comes when you have amassed enough troops and firepower to cripple your enemy and you take the huge amount of soldiers and vehicles over to the enemy camp. You crush the enemy but because one single enemy storehouse or powerstation still exists somewhere on the map, you have to spend 20 minutes searching it out to destroy it before scoring a victory.
- All in all the AI does not appear to have made any significant advances and the game becomes very same-ish after a few plays.
------------
Having not played a C&C title for some years, this one was a disappointment. Admittedly I haven't played the Zero Hour expansion pack, but I think C&C needs to make a big jump forward to keep pace with the progress of other RTS games and this wasn't it.
"awesome game with one tiny flaw" c&c generals is an awesome game where u get to be a general of course and can control an army either the usa china or a strong terrorist force of the Global Liberation Army(GLA). u can build a strike team and have infantry tanks helicopters and jets.
for example china u can bild red guard tank hunters hackers and black lotus agent for infantry for armor u can bild troop crawlers wich cum with 8 guards battle master tank dragon tank gattling tank nuke cannon inferno cannon and over lord tanks and for aircraft u get mig. but the only little flaw is when u zoom in on a ranger his gun acutally looks like a metal pole not much a deal any way.............
"Not even close to living up to Red Alert series" The 3D gameplay they attempt here just doesn't work. It's not entertaining and addictive like the old RA 2. They should put effort into making a Red Alert 3.
"Stan, you crack me up!" I bought the game because of your review...It IS fun.
Marc
"C&C series is a must have for Real time strategy game players" I have been playing C&C since the first one came out in 1995 and had never got tired of playing this game. The only thing that can make me leave a C&C Game is a New C&C game. What makes great this games is not the graphics or movies, what makes it great is the always fun gameplay.

What our customer's say!"10 out of 10", WOW --get the deluxe version, this game is that RAD!!! this is a stand alone version, with Zero Hour as a expansion--yes get the expanstion as well--for the added options. its a very good game even without Zero Hour--but why deprive yourself!?! the super wepons are more realistic, than in red alert 2. That was the only thing RA2 really needed to impove on --an they did with this game. you choose a general to fight as---EACH with their own army style--ie.. tank genral has all tanks at a lower production cost, limited air force. Air force general has all aircraft available at a reduced perduction cost, an fewer tanks, an tanks costing a bit more. get the ideal oh, an they have a army general that uses booby traps, and underground bunkers, build one bunker an put 5 tanks in it--then build another bunker elsewere---like near enemy lines--an 5 tanks drive out at your command. better looking gameplay-more missle trails, brighter colors- more real looking flames, crisp sound, ingaging music yes, I truly enjoy this game, more than any other pc game I own that says a lot concidering i have sooo many to choose from "Great Game", Most of the other reviews for this game are dated back to 2003. That really suprised me. I didn't even realize that this game was that old. My brother got it as a birthday present from a friend last year (2006), and I just assumed it was pretty recent, due to the impressive graphics. The only flaws I ever really noticed are that the infantry units don't have any faces. Other than that I didn't notice anything too corny, but it's not like I looked for flaws in particular. The explosions are cool and vehicle/building parts go flying all over. The nuclear explosoins from Chana's nuclear missiles are really impresive and fun to watch; they create huge mushroom clouds and leave radiation all over grouind zero. The soundtrack and sound effects are really cool, too. The music matches the mood of the game, which makes it much more enjoyable. Their is a soundtrack specific to each of the three powers. The sound effects are realistic and loud. The cannons sound realistic, and their are consant shouts from the troops locked in combat. The gameplay is really fun, to say the least. This is my first Command and Conquer game, and I'm impressed. The units are farily balanced for all three differnent teams (USA; China; and the GLA, a fictional terrorist group ). For example, the GLA cannot build any aricraft, but have fantastic anti-aricraft units. The anti-tank infantry diliver a ton of damage to tanks, but regular infantry units are efficient for taking out anti-tank infnatry. The one unfair unit in the game, however, is the Overload Tank for China, even if it is quite expenxive. It is a very cool unit, no doubts there, but it is immense. It can take a ton of damage, and while absorbing all the enemy fire can deliver a lot of damage as well. A small group of four or five is almost unstopable if used correctly.
All three teams have their advantages and disadvantages. China is mostly firepower. They are good because they have units that are fairly powerful and cheap so that they can start out defending, and can quickly and cheaply build a scouting force of infantry to scout enemy defenses and such. As you save up and research new technologies and units, China can really become a military juggernaut. The GLA's strength is stealth. You can use Guerilla-like tactics to weaken the enemy's economy and thin their ranks, and then finish them off with the GLA's weak military units. The USA strong point is definately technology. It isn't even necssary to do a lot of research, though some will obviously help. The units are pretty powerful to start out with. For example, Paladin tanks have lasers that shoot enemy missiles is the air, and the USA's Participle Uplink Cannon is potent. A ballancing system like this, on my opinion, makes the game really fun and very interesting.
As was mentioned in other reviews, however, there are a few annoyances. The AI can be pretty dumb. The GLA AI does not exploit the GLA's stealth advantages. It just biulds up big armies full of weak units and attempts to destroy you with pitiful charges. As soon as the attack is crushed, they just repeat the process. Pathfinding is sometimes an issue for units, and units that are faster than others will just fly off ahead of the rest of the army, leaving themselves unsuported and vulnerable. This makes it ncessary to guide your armies along one step at a time, which can get annoying. Anoter issue that arises in longer games is the map will run out of resources. I have had to quit in the middle of a game multiple times only because no one has any money left, nor any source of income.
Overall, however, the disadantages far outwiegh the advantages. I know there is a newer Command & Conquer game on the market, but that means that this one will be cheaper, even if it isn't as good. I highly reccomend this game.
"Fun game, good for multi-player ", This game is great, it's one of the best C&C games to date. If you like starcraft you'd love this game.
"For the price, it's nice", This game does'nt have the best graphics, but they're good enough. Gameplay is great, but the sounds of troops saying various, yet repetitive things after being trained gets tiresome very quickly. The ability to occupy buildings enables the player to develop their strategy more than is common to RTS games. However, I would suggest getting the expansion pack (which I don't own) for an extra ten bucks or so. I actually found at Wal-Mart a five pack of games; Generals, Zero Hour, and some other, not so my taste games, going for 20.00. Well worth the price.
"War Has Never Been So Perfectly Depicted", Ever wonder about nuclear war? Ever curious about what terrorists COULD do? You like realistic startegy gamess on PC? Yes? The, without a doubt, this is most certainly, DEFINETELY the game almost tailor made for you.
Okay, enough with the introduction. Command and Conquer Generals is a very polished RTS. It combines reality with the very near future, and it still manages to be realistic and fun at the same time. There are a diverse arsenal of unit types, three factions, and good single player campaigns. (I haven't played the online multiplayer, yet.)
Command and Conquer: Generals puts you in command of three distinct factions of your choice, each with it's own advantages. The USA have staggering power with steel and led. The Chinese have and endless number of troops and vehicles. The Global Liberation Army (GLA) are a terrorist organization that uses surprise and secrecy to win battles. Personally, my favorite faction is the GLA, but that's for each player to decide for themsleves.
Besides the good gameplay, Generals manages to look pretty good looking game. Everything looks smooth and colorful, but just being short of truly remarkable.
Sound hasn't been a big concern for me in a strategy game, and Generals is is pretty much average with this factor. The music is excellent, but the sound effects and voice acting don't really get you hooked.
Overall, Command and Conquer: Generals is and outstanding RTS. The three factions are different from one another, the gameplay is simply, well, FUN. Anyone with even the slightest dash of interest in the strategy genre needs to hurry to their local electronics store and buy this game the very minute they finish reading this review. Got it, soldier?

Read this reviews before You buy...
"GREAT FUN GREAT GAME", I have this game and the expansion for it. They are both great games. This game, Generals, has great detail if you have fast enough of a computer. You can play three different campaigns, the US, the Chinese, and the GLA (Global Liberation Army). The campaigns are great but they do not join together that well, it's not like where one ends the other leaves off. This is one thing that the expansion pack fixes. Overall this is a great game and I would suggest it to anyone that likes RTS games and likes to build their own powerful armies.
"The Best!", Command and Conquer Generals is a fantastic game with great graphics and realistic war scenes!
"I'm going back to RA2", I was waiting a while for this game's price to go down, playing Red Alert 2 in order to get pumped for Generals. I thoroughly enjoyed RA2 and Yuri's Revenge, because the story was excellent and the graphics made it possible to at least tell what unit you were looking at without clicking on it. Maybe I was just expecting too much when I put Generals in my CD tray. Now I don't have a high-end PC by any means, but Generals should have run fine on my PC, and it did. The reason this game is so slow is not because I don't meet the requirements, it is because the units were programmed by the developers to move slowly in order to create that "realistic" effect. Anyone who has played RA2 will know what I'm talking about. Remember how you could go into the options menu to change the game speed (slow, fast, faster, fastest)? Well, with Generals, its is like the game is stuck on slow all the time, and it's not because you don't meet the requirements. If you can get past the slow pacing of the game, wait until it is in the bargain bin to buy it, because it will set you back a pretty penny with not much reward if you don't.
"Very Entertaining!!!", Well Bonjour, everyone! I come here all the time to read the reviews before I actually go and buy the game. Some how my friends telling me "That game rocks" just isn't convincing enough. So now I thought I'd drop a few lines about C&C Generals. Well like the other respected reviewrs have said, this game is more like Warcraft than it is like C&C. So if your a die-hard C&C phsyco fan, then you might want to sharpen your butcher knife before purchasing this, because you're going on a killling spree accross the nation angry that they've changed your favourite game. As for everyone else, well go buy a couple gallongs of coffee and barraciade yourself in your room with your computer, because you're not coming out for months. Wait....what..? Oh well moving on. Oh first of I DO NOT think that this game is violent at all. Soldiers DON'T burst like tomatoes. And if you think that watching a terrorsit jeeo flying through the sky in a blaze, performing some first class aerobatic manuevers, is violent well then I honestly don't think that C&C is the right tittle for you. I'd suggest something from the Barbie brand. Barbie beach party if you want to walk on the wild side and take it to the max. Back to the game. It is very realistic. Your structures actually look like buildings and not Picaso's, like they did in RA2. All units, and buildings, are now finally to scale. That is you don't have any giraffe sized Micheal Jordans walking around tripping over your tanks. And now tanks are actually TANKS. They take it like a tank. Hostile fire that is. So you DO NOT have to worry about a small band of Malibu's badboys, armed to the teeth with slingshots and high-hopes, terrorizing your arsenal. Um...The battles are just fantabulous. They are straight to the action, no kissing and hugging. Explosions everywhere, bulets ans shells whistling by. Missles trying to get into the acton too. But most of all it is amasing to watch soldiers die. They like to perform little dancing ensembles before they pass they heritage on to the next generation. One time I killed this rocketlauncher weilding Rambo and it looked like he was going to throw his rocketlauncher at one fo my units. I was like whoa, hold it James Bond, no need for heroes. Oh and another thing, this game is set about 20 years from now, and it is very plausible. Like the untis don't seem to advanced from tdays units. Some do have some extra features (on which the U.S. military is working on today, like remote control spy-planes). I mean just think of the technology we had 20 years ago. Just of computers and video games. Tetris was probably the most extreme game out there. Rated: R, scenes of extreme nudity, the vertical, long blocks might arrouse some individuals. Back to Generals. This game is not to far-fetched, unlike RA2. Where they had derigables(kirov airships) and laser tanks. Now I wounder, what year was that? Were they trying to reanact the Hindenburg situation on a larger scale? Anywho, Um...have any of you seen the 2001 movie "Black Hawk Down"? Well if you have then you probably have notcied that Samolian resistance have been using those low-rider pick-up trucks with a machinegune mounted in the back. Well guess what...this game has those! They are weak but inexpensive and quick to produce. And they will drive you insane! But then again nothing beats watching one of those flipping over in the air, flying accross the screen in flames, while the machinegunner is practising his 3m springboard biving routine. Well tha about covers it. I'd like to thank all my sponcers; my mom's apple pie, my mom's tomato soup. Oh and my mom's chocolate chip cookies. Well, Bon soir.
"Addicting War Game", Command & Conquer: Generals, excels beyond its predecessor Command & Conquer releases. Generals gives you the opportunity to choose between 3 sides: United States, China, and the Global Liberation Army. Each has their own distinct units, and way of fighting (of course)...and in addition, as each unit racks up kills, they receive promotions. The higher they rank, the better features and skills they posess.
One downside to this version is the view. It goes for a ground-level approach, rising and lowering with the altitude, and slightly zooming in/out as you scroll toward your units or opposing units. This interferes with the gameplay slightly, but you soon get used to it.
Overall: a thrilling addition to the Command & Conquer family, with mind-blowing graphics and sounds.
