"Great quality - hard to label"
I haven't had a bad CD in the bunch yet, and the black color is very classy looking. However, since the entire CD is black, there's no place to write a label! As everyone knows, sticking a label on a CD is a bad idea because it unbalances the rotation of the CD and there's a chance that the label will come off inside the player, so that's not an option.

They've left an area for a label - all they have to do is make it a color that a permanent marker can be read from.

"Quality is sub-par; lack of writing surface"
I've used these discs for both standard PC data media (burnt ISOs for backups and general data), for CD/Redbook audio, and for some grey-market consoles (select people will know what I mean by this. :) )

Out of a 50 pack, I ended up with about 6 coasters. Not horrible, but not great either.

These discs have a tendancy to be "noisy" when read from -- the thickness and size of the discs, despite being standard, must be off by a slight margin since they end up rattling around inside of drives at higher speeds (32x+). Other vendor's discs don't seem to do this.

These discs do not perform very well under high speed operations (32x+) either; lots and lots of media re-reads. Again, other vendor's discs seem to perform OK.

But the worst part, in my opinion, is that there's no writing surface on the label side of the disc! It's almost completely (99%) black. How are you supposed to write on the disc what the contents are?! Oh right, there's a 1cm strip along the edge of the CD (curved none the less) where you can write. Thus you're forced to buy stickers that go on the disc (which end up making the discs unbalanced in weight, thus making even more noise than mentioned above).

I'd have given these discs 3 stars had the quality been better, but the lack-of area to write on is appalling. I really don't know what Memorex was thinking.

"Perfect so far"
I usually have problems with Memorex CD-Rs, I've even had one spindle where every other cd was bad. But I've been through about 5 of these Black 50-packs and haven't had one CD-R fail yet. These are the only kind I'll use for my business. Very good product.

"burned almost 100 without error"
I am converting a personal library of LP's & 45's to CD's and have burned almost 100 CD's to date and have yet to have a single problem. I label them using Memorex labels and haven't experienced any blistering. I use the CD's for archiving, as I play the music on my iPod, but always listen to the CD's after they have been burnt to ensure they are OK. I rely upon reviews when making purchases and thought, in light of the bad ones for this product, that I needed to add my experiences.

"well...not what I thought"
When I saw these I thought they were the old one's that Memmorex used to sell. Memorex used to be a really good brand for media, but their CD-Rs just keep getting flimsier and flimsier. I got these because the old black labels were really thick and lasted a long time. They also held up great to scratching. The new ones are cheap and the top often peals off which is even worse then a scratch on the bottom. These seem to be as flimsy and cheap as the regular ones except black. I would now choose a different media such as TDK, but unfortunately my old car stereo only prefers Memorex for some reason.
The last 100pk spindle of Memorex CD-Rs I got werent black but seem the same. Almost everyone has the top peeling or flaking off somewhere eventhough they were kept in a case most of the time. And again, when the top peels off it seems to be much worse than a scratch (Data is completely lost). Too bad a great brand turned to crap.

What our customer's say!

"doesn't work on macs", i bought these because bright green is my favorite color and it looks really good with the black!!
but that seems to be all they are good for.
if you have a mac, DO NOT BUY THESE!!
my friend used to have these and they worked on her dell computer, though, so they aren't completely useless.

"Won't Work In Older Drives", I bought these cause they are cool looking, but it ended up being a waste of money. If your burner isn't brand spanking new it doesn't even recognize the disc. I don't know why the silver ones will work but these wont! Sucks.

"Macbookpro of Pioneer CDjs will not read these discs", Simply my mac book pro and my pioneer cdjs will not read these discs. bad product

"They're great-just follow this tip", I've used these for years. I love them. I never have any problems with them. Usually, if I go back and check after burning it was a problem with the audio file on the computer-in the rare event of an error. It was not a problem with these. I've used them in my ford, a bmw, a benz, honda, saturn, pioneer, & various computers + players. I've used them for data and music. They're great and always play. If you do have a problem- check your burned file's quality. Chances are- it isn't these CD-Rs. TIP- USE A SILVER SHARPIE (yes these exit) AND LET IT DRY BEFORE INSERTING IN PLAYER. IT SHOWS UP GREAT AND LOOKS NEAT. No need for the writing space complaint. :)

"Does not work in Mac's", I purchased this product to burn cd's for my legally purchased digital music from iTunes and Amazon. I can not create cd's using the superdrive that came installed in my MacBook. I have also read where users are experiencing the same problem on MacBook Pros. The media is cool to look at, but it simply does not work using the built in drive superdrive. I spoke with Apple support and they offered to replace the drive under warranty, however, I have had my MacBook for less than two months and this media has been available for a few years. The tech support representative stated he did not know if the replacement drive would be newer or resolve the problem. Luckily I have an external Sony DVD burner that works fine with the media. However, I can make audio cd's using the external drive instead of the internal.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"0-STARS - THE WORST CD'S I HAVE EVER HAD! ", EVERYONE BE CAREFUL. AFTER READING POSITIVE REVIEWS I WAS VERY EXCITED AND BOUGHT A PACK OF THESE COOL LOOKING CD'S.
WELL I HAVE TO SAY I HAD NEVER SO MANY BAD CD'S IN A PACK! EVER!
IT TAKES SOMETIMES 3 OR 4 BAD CD'S BEFORE I BURN A GOOD ONE. AND I HAVE TO BURN ON A SLOWER SPEED. VERY FRUSTRATING. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY DRIVE. THEY ARE JUST NOT THAT COMPATIBLE AS THE MANUFACTURE SAYS. MY NEW SONY WAIO LAPTOP DOESN'T EVEN REGISTER THAT THE DISC IS IN. SO, IF YOU WANA SAVE YOURSELF LOT'S OF HEADAKE DON'T BUY THESE.

"DONT BUY", If Amazon had a 0 star rating, thats what I would give this item. Memorex claims that it will work in all CD drives, and that the black plastic doesn't effect the CD. They are lying! I put one of these into my 2 year old CD drive, it made the "My Computer" screen go corrupt. I tried to burn a file onto it, my drive messed up and the CD no longer worked.

"Got a picky clarion head unit? You're in luck!", MY '96 Maxima has the bose stereo (Clarion) head unit in it and was not liking my Taiyo Yuden (top quality) CD-r's when the temp was high.. so I looked at some reviews for cdr's and found these. Took a chance and ordered a 50 pack and wooo! I couldn't be happier. I burned my first disk today and tested it (it was in the upper 80's here) and my stereo had no problems with these. I reccommend you try these out if you have a picky older player.

"Memorex black CD-Rs, the best out there!", These are the best CD-Rs on the market. However, there is something you should look out for. Whenn buying, look for ones that have a somewhat rough surface and a foam ring insert on the very top. Others will have a glossy surface and will have plastic ring inserts on the top. These glossy ones have a higher failure rate. I burn TONS of CDs, out of 100 rough ones, 1 failed. Out of 50 glossy ones, 11 failed!

"Worked fine for me, used them everywhere", The media worked fine for me, got a pack once as a gift and used them all. Between work, home, and laptop - burned them on cd-r's and dvd-r's and all worked. No idea why some reviews complain about "black" cds being bad. You can buy cd-r's in red, blue, orange, silver, and ones that look like old 45 records, etc... It's just the color, it's not some other format. So if you're having trouble, don't blame the color. Memorex is a good brand name for cd-rs or dvd-rs so ignore those talking about an issue with "color".
