Others say...
"Total POS..." Worked for a while, web interface is junk (looks like it was made with Frontpage). Stopped working after a while, can't seem to be able to get back in using any of my admin passwords. Can't reset the password anyway.
Stay away from this piece of garbage!
"don't bother" It's an ongoing battle trying to make it work. It will work for a couple of days and then quit without a particular reason.
"Simply Awful!" I only wish I had read these reviews before I bought this turd of a product. For all the reasons the others mentioned, it fails on every level. Squirrely installation, S-L-O-W print jobs, runs super hot. Zero documentation, no web support, and no response from customer service. The uninstall utility doesn't even work. Stay away. Far away.
"CRAP!" To start with the documentation is substandard, and the web interface is only half functional. The default username/password (admin:1234, which I had to cull the internet for more than an hour to even find since it isn't even in the documentation) doesn't work on half the web interface. I can change the password (sometimes) change most configuration things (POST printout doesn't seem to work at all) and modify a few other settings but the important things don't seem to work at all: I can't make it accept dhcp or otherwise modify the ip and I can't do ANYTHING about the dhcp server it has. I can't telnet in, like I'm supposed to be able to, and I can't use the *nix utilities (third party, there is NO support from the manufacturer) that are supposed to detect and configure it. It randomly dropps off the network and has to be manually reset. There's no way to physically restore factory settings. I've never seen an electronic device this bad, and I've had to deal with a LOT of bad devices.
"piece of junk" An awful lot of the Hawking equipment at Fry's had "returned item" stickers on them, but for some reason I decided to go ahead and buy one of these anyway. Big mistake.
I could not even get the installation CD to work correctly. I clicked on the admin installation, and a dialog box ("unpacking EAdmin") appeared and then quickly disappeared. The "Utilities Setup" dialog that was supposed to come up never did. I tried clicking on "Exit", and nothing happened. I had to use Windows Task Manager to kill the install.
After several repeats of this futility, I logged onto the Hawking web site to see if there was any help. I found the prodcut support page for the print server, which consisted of only downloads of updates (no FAQs or common problems info that I could see). I tried to download an updated admin program, and got a "corrupted program" when I tried to run it.
It was then that I checked out the Amazon reviews and found that even if I had gotten it to work I would have been disappointed by the speed and the lack of bidirectional communication. So I am packing it up and taking it back to Fry's. What a pain. Next time I will be sure to check the reviews here before buying anything.

What our customer's say!
"Good 1-port printer server for home-based business", I bought this thing a few years ago and never got it to work on my wireless router. I picked it up today and decided to try again. Using the PrintServer Utilities software, I entered the default user access, admin/1234, to change the HPS1U to auto IP address and hooked it up to my wireless router. No IP address. Bummer. Well, call it operator error -- turns out I had never added its MAC address to the MAC address filter list on my wireless router. Added its MAC address and Voila! a new IP address appeared.
To get it to work on the home PC and wireless laptops in the house, I added a new network printer and entered the URL, http://HPS1U-IP-address:631/lpt1 (where "HPS1U-IP-address" is the IP address of the HPS1U printer server). Now I can print from anywhere in the house.
I give this device four stars because of the way it runs so hot. Otherwise, the quick installation guide is accurate -- you just have to know your home IP address setup (and in my case, the wireless router's MAC address filter list).
"Simply doesn't work", Trying to share my Canon S520 between a Linux box (Suse 10.0) and a Windows XP box using IPP (TCP/IP) and SMB. Neither one works more than 15% of the time. No new firmware since 2005. Seems that Harking also gave up on this print server. Too bad. It looked like it had such potential, but the darned thing just doesn't work.
"Setup instructions below, pain to setup but works", I gave it 5 stars because I was able to get it running I hope my review will help others with the setup of the Hawkings print server.
After struggling with the setup of this small print server, I will tell you the secret to setting it up quickly and with little head ache as possible. The secret is to know the default IP address of the print server. Stupid tech support told me it was 192.168.1.250 ... wrong. I had to use angry IP scanner to find the real default IP address.
Connect the printer (leave printer on) to print server then connect to your computer.
First, the default IP address for the print server is the following IP address 1.2.3.4 so setup your network card (WiFi) with an IP address of 1.2.3.5 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 Default gateway is not needed.
Open a dos prompt and type in the following (without quotes)"ping 1.2.3.4" If you get a response then your ready to go if not you screwed up so fix the IP or check the subnet mask.
I suggest if possible directly connecting the print server to your computer and not through your router.
Second install the configuration tool that comes with the print server and run it. It should detect the print server and your printer automatically. (Note: some multi-function printers will not work with the print server)
Figure out what IP address you want for the print server, enter it into the configuration application and close the application.
Then change your IP address from 1.2.3.5 to whatever it was before (unless your using DHCP) then revert back to obtain IP address automatically
Now login into your router and add the IP address that you entered in the configuration tool. (I suggest you make this a static route, you can do that even if your using DHCP, don't forget to add the MAC address, it address is located on the back of the print server, it might be called Node ID). Read the instructions to your router for adding routes.
Ping the new address IP of the printer.
If you do not have drivers for you printer install them now.
Goto printers and fax in the control panel of Windows, click on add printer, add a network printer, enter in the following (without quotes) "http://your.IP.address/lp1" and make it your default printer. You need to have the "/lp1" after the IP address.
Now you should be ready to print.
Vanilla Ice rules!!!
Word to your Mother.
"Does What it says it will", This miniture gadget does what I expected it to do. Works great and no problems so far. Just make sure to install the printer on the Internet Print Server Port or you'll have a hell of a time making it work.
"finicky, but I can't find anything better", This print server is pretty bad but I can't find anything better for under $300. I just figured out that this one fails most often when I print something, turn the printer off, then later turn the printer back on to print something else. If I just leave the printer on all the time the print server won't make it print garbage the second time. For large print jobs I still have to connect the printer directly to my PC though (but be sure to plug it back in to the print server afterward or else your spouse will wonder why the printer doesn't work any more).
HPS1U with HP Deskjet.
Read this reviews before You buy..."Inadequate at best", I've been using the Hawking HPS1U Print Server about 4 months now. Very slow but having light printing needs I could live with that. My big beef is having to power recycle at least every other day when the server loses track of the network. I'm using it with a HP Deskjet 932C USB printer on a home network with 1 Win XP Pro and 2 Win 98 SE computers tied together by a Netgear RP614 router. Four calls to Hawking Tech support have solved nothing other than the hope of maybe resolving my problem with a future firmware upgrade. "Overall good, but runs VERY hot", Having a small home office of 3 desktops and 2 laptops, this seemed like a great solution for everyone to share printing. A win98, win2k, 2 win xp, and a linux box (Fedora) all connected easily via IP and overall setup was fairly easy. Since I did not use the current printer (Canon i850) a ton before I hooked it up, I cannot comment to much on speed, however performance does not seem to bad in my estimation. I am not able to use all the canon monitoring software, but for me it was unnecessary. The only downside to this print server, and to me this is a very big one, is that it runs hot....VERY HOT. I have one of those plastic floor covers under a desk chair, and had this server sitting on the ground there for a week after setup. The plastic is reddish/brown under where the print server was. It *feels* like it is way too hot for this little item. Out of concern, I now unplug the server whenever I know there will be large periods of no use. I have not had any performance problems from the unit, however I'm still a little wary about leaving it on 24/7, especially since it melted part of my office! So if you can live with plugging in and out to turn it on and off, then this print server is great for you. Again setup was easy and performance is just fine for me. Perhaps Hawking's next revision of this product line will fix some of the heat issues and will lead me to buy from them again. If not, then I would pass. Hope this helps!
"Be aware-It's not bidirectional!", My epson photo printer stopped providing status information like ink level and it generates error whenever I print. I can not use any of the advanced features either. So, I tried HP printer. It does the same thing through this printserver. Also, it's very slow and had to be power recycled to make it work quite often. It's probably made for Black and White printer. But, there isn't anything about compatible printers in the manual or on the web.
"Works even with Linux", I was inpressed when I opened the box and found out that the company gives Linux support. It worked really well with my HP LaserJet 1200 SE, and both Linux/ Windows can use it without any problems. The printer works as fast (sometimes even faster!) as it was connected to your USB port. The server also comes with a nice Web Interface, Telnet Configuration Support, SNMP, AppleTalk, NetWare, DHCP, and many other nice little features. I am using a Linksys BEFW11S4 in my little setup, and (if you configure it) you can print from anywhere with an internet connectiojn with no problem (great for laptops)
"Too limited to keep", I had high hopes of sharing my Canon i850 printer, and the Hawking H-PS1U seemed to be the USB answer. Alas performance did not measure up to its looks. One, it was very, very slow. Two, it would not allow full bi-directional communication back to the computer. Three, it operated very hot. Did I say it was slow? One email contact to tech support containing four questions brought no response. Another finally brought a minimal answer - disable bi-directional capability. No, I said, I need that capability, and if a user has to disable a feature he/she paid for to use your device, your product is deficient. A third email returned one more answer - the server meets thermal targets. A fourth and final email generated the most comprehensive answer, repeating earlier instructions but still not addressing all my questions. So, if it does what you need, the Hawking is fine. If it doesn't, don't count on tech support for much help.
