"Only for looking up known words"
If you only want to look up meanings of words with known spelling or which appear in text you are reading this is very good. However this is ALL I-Finger products do. It can be quite annoying in automatic look up mode since as you move your mouse the meaning of every word you move over instantly flashes up. When you move to a word to look up you may have to move your mouse over a dozen words and meanings will flash up one after the other. Unless you turn it off when you don't want to look up a word you will have words flashing up all the time unless you find a blank spot for the cursor and don't move your mouse. It can drive you nuts. It has no browse function so you can only look up words you know or see. Whilst it has a lot of words you can only look up words you know are in it. You must have it in book form to see all the words and their meanings. You can only ever see words that you click on or type in. When you open any book dictionary you can browse all the words looking at meanings. If you look up a word you often look up other words nearby in the book. It does not allow you to do any form of wildcard search and it does not look up words which are spelt differently to what you type in. You cannot get lists of words with (say) a common prefix or any other pattern.

"DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY"
I live in Mexico, and I do a lot of business through internet, so I have several dictionaries installed in my computer, but this one OXFORD DICTIONARY OF ENGLISH is by far the worst, the iFinger engine works only a few times, and very often the program suddenly "NOT RESPOND", I prefer to uninstall this Dictionary. Please read all the costumer reviews whether You decide to buy it or not.

"DO NOT BUY THIS CD-IT I S INFECTED WITH SPYWARE AND ADWARE"
I ordered this CD-ROM dictionary but alas it would not install. I tried to use it but it gave me a hard time trying to register it. Although it said registration was an option, it failed to skip that phase. When I ran my anti-spyware programs, they suggested that I had picked up a lot of Spyware and Adware. So Buyer, please beware of this CD ROM.

"Fantastic"
Works just as advertised online or off. It's one of the most ingenious and useful little products I've ever installed. I also installed the Selectsoft Oxford pop-up thesaurus: both programs automatically work together. Both programs work instantaneously when you need a word looked up.

If you like these kinds of useful conveniently productive programs you also will probably want to add another "little" program: ndx Cards (TruTamil LLC).

"Works Very Well With All Software"
I was very pleasantly surprised by how well this dictionary integrated with all the other software. It does this by appearing as a little search window in the title bar of any software.

Most times you can search for a word by simply highlighting it and then double-clicking. When this doesn't work, highlight the word and then press cntl-F11 (you can change the hot-key if you wish).

Plus, it does all this without consuming a large amount of memory.

I highly recommend this dictionary.

What our customer's say!

"I can't believe Oxford is still backing the useless iFinger interface.", Starting with the good aspect of New Oxford Dictionary of English, it contains 350,000 words and is unquestionally the best English dictionary available on a single CD today.

The interface itself is intolerable (even offensive), so much so that I have deleted this dictionary from my system. Why can iFinger not create an interface that will remember its settings? Through correspondence with iFinger "support" (which is not really support at all), I have discovered iFinger has no intention of creating a decent interface which must, by definition, remember its settings.

The iFinger interface is completely sad given the quality of the New (350,000 word) Oxford Dictionary of English.

My recommendation: Buy the Tenth Edition Oxford Dictionary on CD-ROM or download the free WordWeb dictionary, both excellent, both of which can remember their settings.

"It's actually not bad!", Despite the fact that you do need to type in the correctly spelled word or the search engine, because it's not intuitive, won't take you to the nearest match, I still find the Oxford dictionary of English very useful. It is practical and always available on the right corner of the screen, if you wish. If not you can minimize it and just click on it whenever you need it.
I really like the pop-up that allows you to still be on a word document, a web page or even Messenger and still be able to look for or verify a word without having to minimize you current document. It's a time-saver.
It is 355,000 words and takes very little space on your hard drive. I use it in association with the Oxford Hachette French dictionary and it's great to type in a word and obtain both its definition (with examples, phrases and information about its origin) and translation at once!
I am now considering buying the German and Spanish versions. I believe that it is a pretty fun and easy way for me to refresh my knowledge of these languages without too much effort since when you type in a word the system gives you definitions and translations for as many languages as you have installed on your computer and all that in that same little window on the right corner of your screen. It's multitasking and it's great!

"Disappointed", Oxford should be ashamed of this product. I use their paper versions and would expect a superior product.

"Very Poor Quality - Completely Useless Software", If you are looking for a well designed, effective, easy to use, reliable research tool/dictionary for your computer look elsewhere because The Pop-Up Oxford Dictionary of English is pathetic.

Avoid this sad sad product. It is completely useless.

"Oxford Dictionary of English shortcomings....", The software does not allow the user to search for a list of closely spelled words. The software wil only find a word with the exact spelling. This is not like other dictionary software I have used. Some words, such as diarrhea, were not listed. It's great if you want to place the cursor over a particular word and get the definition but that is where the products usefulness ends.

"political bias in definitions", The definitions and examples of use contain severe political bias.

Also, the dictionary is not useful for spelling checking because if you type in the word as you think it is spelled it will just say no. This is unlike other dictionaries that will give you many suggestions of words slightly different in spelling than your erroneous one.

"A Fantastic Tool!", Oxford University Press produced this CD-Rom version of their dictionary, and it is superb! Installed onto your hard-drive,
it is easy for the user to look up their choice of 350,000 words, phrases and definitions. This is a great tool for students, teachers and writers!

The dictionary will display on your title bar as a drop down menu. It is actually designed to work as a module with other dictionaries produced in CD-Rom format by Oxford University Press. I use it frequently in combination with The Pop-up Oxford Thesaurus, and recently added The Pop-up Oxford-Hachette French-English dictionary. You can use as few or as many of the dictionaries as you like.

With so many countries now participating in the European Union, it is essential for anyone who lives, studies or travels in Europe to be multi-lingual. Increasingly, it is important for American users to learn and use other languages -- particularly Spanish, and there is a dual-language version of this as well. The interlocking dual-language dictionaries produced by Oxford University Press work smoothly on a word document, as well as on a web-page.

I have used other dictionary programs, but find that the English dictionary by Oxford is superior to the American Heritage dictionary available on Microsoft's Bookshelf. The American Heritage contains more slang, has shorter entries and is definitely designed for an American user. The Oxford University Press English dictionary lists both American AND British uses for words, has more definitions and the entries are more specific, with less slang.
