"Purple Haze has both Vietcong and First Alpha!"
Don't make the same mistake I did, I bought the original Vietcong then bought Purple Haze. Purple Haze has both the original Vietcong and the mission pac Fist Alpha. I thought PH was an expansion along with FA. You can buy PH for only $13 on amazon. I wound up spending $29 for Vietcong then another $29 for PH costing over $60 for something I could have gotten for only $13!!!!

"Don't waste your money"
This game is BAD BAD BAD, Multiplayer is the worst I have seen ever and after starting the game and quiting I have to reboot my machine cause it screws up my video card.
Don't waste your money on this garbage game like I did.

"Really ugly, but unique and good"
One thing about first person shooters nowadays is that so many of them seem the same. That's why Vietcong is somewhat refreshing, since it is kind of different. The game really makes a bad first impression on you with its ugly graphics and unorthodox gameplay. Vietcong isn't a stealth game. It's not a pure action game either. The squad-based elements are too simple to call it a tactical shooter. It's unique one its own, and it's very good. Best of all, it feels authentic, and for a war as unique as Vietnam, that's saying a lot.

What this game suceeds at is effectively capturing the elements that made Vietnam different from wars such as World War 2. Engagements take place quickly in tension-filled jungles between your small squad and small groups of four or five VC. A helicopter often brings you into the mission and then picks you up at the end. Occasionally, you can radio a firebase for support and then a few seconds later, hell in the form of artillery shells will come raining down on the area that you specify and obliterate anybody in it. Using artillery is a fun mechanic and it's too bad that it only comes up a few times in the game. Vietcong checkpoint saves your game, but it also gives you a limited amount of quick saves per level. This save system is perfect. It keeps the game suspenseful almost all the time, without making it frustrating. The gameplay also relies on good AI instead of heavy scripting for the firefights, and that's another big plus.

The dialog, sounds, and overall feel of the gameplay give the game a feel that resembles what you read about or what you see in old news tapes. You creep slowly through the terrain, following your point man, and then find some cover when you engage some VC. your enemies, as well as your squadmates, are highly lethal and very effective at using cover. It takes maybe three or four bullets to kill you in this game, which means that you have to advance very slowly and carefully. The hardest part about firefights often isn't shooting the enemy, but just finding where he is hiding. Sometimes, all that you see is a tracer or two, or maybe a muzzle flash along with the sound of bullets whizzing past your head. These cat-and-mouse type firefights usually last less than a minute, but they can be very exciting. I have not played a first person shooter that resembles this, except for maybe Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault.

The only fault that I had with the gameplay was that the game occasionally deviates from the squad-based formula and sticks you in some solo tasks. These tasks frequently involve spelunking through maze-like VC tunnels, fighting one or two enemies at a time in a very boring manner. There is one absolute marathon mission in the game where you explore a seemingly endless maze of VC tunnels. It's not frustrating as much as it is really boring. Hopefully, this wasn't in the expansion pack.

The game's audio is competent without being outstanding. The voice acting is a mixed bag. The main character is pretty weak, but some of your squadmates are good. The radio chatter that you listen to is pretty good. The weapons are kind of average sounding, and none of them sound very powerful. The soundtrack is very good, and does a good job of matching the era.

As I said previously, the graphics for this game are pretty bad. All of the character models are blocky and low-detailed. The same goes for the environments, which are drab and very unconvincing. Instead of the feel that you are fighting through jungles, it feels like you are fighting through valleys full of boxes that have crude leaves painted on them. The environments and objects are all very repetitive, which is expected for a game like this, but it's magnified even more by the fact that it looks so outdated.

Vietcong has a pretty good length to it. It took me just under 15 hours or so to finish it. It has a lot going for it, but the underwhelming presentation is a disappointment. This game isn't going to change your life, but it is something good if you're bored with first person shooters. Check it out and see if you like it.

"very good"
I enjoyed this game. Some missions were frustrating, but not half as much as some reviewers say-the tunnel missions in particular are not too long.
Some missions like defending the base from attackers are great fun, and while some characters are over the top the game manages to keep you going on for more. It is not too long either, a plus in my book.

"Best Vietman game out, right now. IMHO."
No you can't drive a tank or drop napalm on somebody, but Vietman was best remembered as a jungle war. And there's plenty of jungle in Vietcong.

This game is best when played online, with lots of cover, several different kinds of weapons, and many different types of games (DM, TDM, CTF, etc.) and maps. Single play, is challenging, especially on vietnam difficulty (no HUD). Do a search and try out the demo. The demo and retail multiplayer servers are compatible with each other but demo has more restrictions on class and maps.

What our customer's say!

"Don't believe the nay-sayers because this game is a blast", This is, hands down, the best Vietnam War game out there. I've had this game for several years and recently reinstalled it on my PC, and it's just as fun now as it was when I first played it. Your role is that of a Special Forces intelligence sergeant who's part of Team A-216 stationed in Vietnam's Central Highlands, astraddle to the Cambodian border. The graphics aren't spectacular and the AI isn't the smartest, but the missions, maps, terrain, and overall atmosphere make this game a must-have. Your team is also very helpful and you need to work with them in order to accomplish the objectives.

Multiplayer sucks bad, but nobody plays it anyways, so don't let that discourage you. And if you think you're going to roll through the bush blazing away on full-auto with your M16, while mowing the NVA down, think again because you'll be KIA in short-order. This is not a "Rambo" 1st person shooter.

"vietcong = worth the money", viecong turned out to be one of the finest games i have played in a long time the only problems with the game that i do not like is the fact that after every mission when you go back to your camp u are confined to your bunker and the shooting range and cannot roam around the camp there are excellent missions on this game such as holding and taking hills from NVA and VC rescuing POWs and finding MIAs in fact the only mission i didnt like was the tunnel rat mission where you have to crawl thru these seemingly neverending VC tunnels which are hopelessly easy to get lost in.
After playing this game i give it these grades:
graphics 8-10
sound 9-10
gameplay 9-10
replay 8.5-10
fun 9-10

overall 9-10
great game highly recommend it peace out

"Great game for playing online!!", Great first person shooter.
Graphics are a little out dated but the game play is fun.

"Somewhat good, and Somewhat bad...", This game is unique in its on way. I did have fun playing it, and yes you full as if your there in the woods and jungles of vietnam. There are a few bugs here and there, but not enough to make you just want to stop playing it. If your in to fps shooters and like vietnam games this is an ok game to own for your PC gaming collection.

"ATMOSPHERE...", FPS & Single-Player-Fan Fun.
I'm a fan of single-player action. There's just enough story line in VIETCONG to tie the mission concepts together. Some maps have better grapics, textures, etc., than others, but the atmosphere truly prevails throughout. Although I've mentioned [story line], self preservation and survival are key. Haulin'-a**, and outdoor firefights in some, and duck-n-cover or s00pa'-d00pa'-stealth in others.
Yes, there ARE some 'glitchy' moments and a possible bug here and there that could be worked out, but the overall enjoyment of the game allows one to look past it for the other 90% of the game the developers got right... very right!
Do you want to step back to one of those classic vietnam flix' you had to see three or four times just for the atmosphere... and this time, Get Involved in the Action??!

Return to Castle Wolfenstein will will always be the classic hit in this genre' for me; take away the sci-fi monsters, amp-up the graphics engine, and Return To Vietcong! If the (minor) flaws got a patch here n' there, this game would rate TOP shelf with any FPS strategy game.

UP SIDE:
*Visual environments follow the 'story'. Moments of stealthy night-time prone crawling missions through the jungle rough with a silenced pistol and creepy cricket-speckeled quiet wading in the swamp with an occasional blast from an M-1 to pick-off a VC laying in wait with an AK47... to all-out multi platoon fire fights defending bases on either side of the barbed wired trenches.
*WEAPONS! If you've ever fired a rifle, you'll appreciate the realistic recoil, magazine count, reload times, variation of accuracy, sound, and velocity to the weapon you choose; THIS is where this game RAWX ALL OUT! No futuristic ray guns and blasters here! This iZZ oLd-sKooL GrEaSe-gUnn, M1, MP40 ThoMpsON-tYme!! ...Did I mention a KiKiNN videoversion of an M-16?!
*Characters are great! The conversations, quips, and back talk of your fellow troops was FAR better than I expected. After the first few missions, you may BELIEVE the personallities of the way-gone-cats! Totally complimentary to the fun.
*The audio tracks RULE. Period. The throw-back sounds of great late-60's rock (placed appropriately), certainly adds a special edge to help set the mood. Great MuZe!

DOWN SIDE:
*Friendly "AI" has a few issues in SOME places. If you get the 'gist of how to "follow" your point-man, instead of leading the pace as a sole-player, the game works better, and your buddies respond with little (or no) interference to the mission maps. The "personality" of these characters makes up for it! (As well; you NEED these cats for your ammo & health.)
*Continuity of textures/graphic quality. This is no DOOM3 when it come to graphics, but it's great. Some locations are peppered with foliage (necessary to environments) that lack the 'realism' which other parts of the game don't have a problem with. Still good... It's JUST A GAME, and it seems too much bump mapping & texture detail may have interfered with game play (or clipping) while crawling through the jungle. [This] does NOT take away from the ATMOSPHERE that makes the game fun.

The slowest PC I ran it on was a P4-2.53ghz w/a Radeon-9000. Anything P4 with a vid-card close to this (and above) should eat it right up, no prob'. If you're looking for that single-player mode that can really capture the imagination, you're there.

"war is hell", Ever since I bought this game, my gaming ways changed dramatically. If you are looking for a realistic Vietnam War game, this is it. If you have ever seen the movie, "We Were Soldiers," it is very similar, except for the amount of soldiers. The graphics are very realistic. You can hardly tell the difference between real life objects. The weapon systematics are unbelievable. The look and the sound of the M-16 is unbelieveable. The M-60 is just like the one in the movies. Plus, you get the vietcong weapons of you choice. This game is also very realistic because, unlike those other war games where you go out by yourself and kill 100 guys, you are actually in a realistic enviroment where, if you go out by yourself, you will die. Throughout the game you are surrounded by 5 other trained soldiers. Don't miss out on this game! BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!

"This game kicks Ass!!!", I Tried this game about a year ago and have been hooked ever since. As far as improvements there have been several patches for it as of now (3/20/04). Yes, your AI can be stupid but apart from a few situations its all good because this game was written for YOU to do most of the work, not the AI.The Jungles r pretty realistic for computer generated foilage.Everything from stealth missions to tunnel clearing to ridiculous fire fights. The Multiplayer is SICK! Definately the best I have Played ( I have Counter-Strike, Medal of Honor, Etc. ) The Fist Alpha Expansion came out recently and improves even more. Even without the Expansion you can still play on the new patch v1.60 and Fist Alpha players can play with you. Look at the Vietcong-Game website for More Info and Demo of both the orig and Fist Alpha. My Favorite game for my Xp computer.

"One of the best FPS games ever", First off this game looked cool. I always wanted a Veitnam game. I've played the WWII games and got a little tiered of them. So I got this game. I haven't regrated it since. The grapics are great, the plot is great, everthing in this game is great. You get to ride and shoot in hughys, shoot those Communist a-holes, and even enjoy veiwing the vast countryside.

You have mulitiplayer, training, 20 differnt levels, a wide veriaty of U.S. and Vietcong weapons, and differnt vehicles to travel in.

This game is a must buy for fps fans, Plus its better then hearin' grandpa talkin about nam.

"you are inside the war", It's a very good game, you feel like you are inside the war and the relation with the buddies is convincent.
The only thing i did not like is some retardation in movement.

I recommend a lot this game
