"review of rosetta stone"
It does require time no method is so easy as not to require some sacrifice on the part of the user. I am learning very fast and am driving my wife and son crazy speaking spanish to them. Put the time into this product and it is worth it

"You may be able to get this for free."
Before you pay a bundle for this product, check your local library. My library cooperative, in Hillsborough County, Florida, owns a licence for the whole shebang, every language and every level. Maybe yours does too: it won't hurt to check. I found it quite by accident in my library's online catalog. I registered by entering my library card number, loading a plugin that was provided, and creating a password. Now I can access it at home online and use any set of lessons I want, for the cost of a library card, which I had anyway. Actually I spent quite a lot of time on the French module, but when I got to Paris I had very little opportunity to remark that the children were about to jump off the table. I pretty much agree with the remarks of reviewers who awarded the minimum number of stars. (I plan to cross post this to other language modules.)

"Overpriced for what you get"
I liked working with the Rosetta Stone program since it is intuitive and is a great basis for beginners. The format makes more sense than a lot of the programs out on the market that say they are for beginners and then jump into no man's land after teaching a few basics.

That being said, I have a few major gripes with the Rosetta program. First and foremost is the price. There is no reason that a program that hasn't really changed since it's introduction should be priced this much. Second is the fact that every word or phrase has only four selections. This makes it pretty easy to guess what might be the right selection just by one word in the phrase. Third is the workbooks were only a cheap rehash of the pictures and phrases from the program itself.

Do I have a good suggestion for language learning software?... no. BYKI has audio flashcards (flawed, but a step in the right direction) and Eurotalk has some sort of interesting options (but with poor audio). All in all this is a Pimsleur of a product... decent, but overpriced (and over-hyped) for what you get.

"Excellent product"
I'm working on this program, and I find it very effective. I'm glad I bought it.

"Good program but SLOW because of Half-Witted Security"
It's such a shame that Rosetta Stone relies on simple copy protection for their CD. It requires your optical drive to work overtime to run this program since it requires the original language CD each and every time you use it.

It would be much more reasonable to allow a disk image to mount on my hard drive, which would free the significant, annoying wait for anything to happen. It takes almost five minutes just to load the language data ! (on a flashy new computer with good specifications).

It's very hard to use on a laptop as well -- mine heats up and wastes battery power spinning the language disk. You even have to uninstall ALL CD copy software you might happen to own.... What a pain !

In this tech era I am sure they could offer a user account to authorize a computer similar to what iTunes Store has done for Macitosh. Even iSale for Macintosh has this feature. I think they are being lazy at our expense.

This is a MAJOR FAILING of this software and is the FIRST thing you learn well before you even hear a single word. You will quickly bore of this cost-saving effort that places the onus of Rosetta Stone security on YOU and your hard working optical drive.

I have bought the program, and they have my money so they aren't listening to me. You on the other hand should complain about this problem before considering a purchase. For what you pay for this very expensive and very simple program, the least they can do is make it more user friendly.

What our customer's say!

"In Mayland - no longer available at libraries", From Montgomery County Maryland Public Library website:

Effective January 31, 2008, Rosetta Stone is no longer available via the Montgomery County Public Libraries' website. Rosetta Stone has made the business decision to discontinue providing this resource to all public libraries as current subscriptions expire. We are disappointed by this news and we regret the inconvenience that it may cause our customers.

"Does not meet expectations - try Pimsleur", I spent a lot of money on this program, and, so far, all it's doing is MAYBE teaching me to RECOGNIZE what is being said - not to speak it. There is absolutely no English translation (in Level I anyway), no breakdown of pronunciation, and no opportunity to construct NEW sentences with words I've already learned. All you do is look at pictures and repeat what is already written or spoken to you. I've already made it through Pimsleur Spanish I and I'm into II and I've learned so much more. Pimsleur is slower on vocabulary, but when you learn it, you learn how to conjugate and incorporate it into an original sentence. The bottom line is, I feel Rosetta stone can only be used as a supplement to other programs I'm studying - a very expensive supplement.

"Where is it?", I would love to do a review a product I've heard so many wonderful things about, but it never arrived. Called customer service (somewhere in India apparently) only to have their computers either "broken down" or "updating". All this for a week straight. Also, they would say their systems are down and just hang up on you on a few occasions. There is another language I'd like to use....

"Decent But Do Not Use This While Driving. Use Behind the Wheel Spanish Instead!", Rosetta Stone is clearly overrated but solid.
The problem with the overall approach is that it requires that you spend your learning time in front of a computer, which is where you do everything else. Lot's of competition.
I prefer to do my language learning during my otherwise wasted downtime while I drive. If I study a language while driving, I win because I use otherwise wasted hours. I, like most Americans, spend more time driving than ever before. When I get home, I want to do other essentials.
My favorite car Spanish course is Behind the Wheel Spanish 8 CD. Free up your computer and learn Spanish while you drive is my recommendation.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour

"Rosetta Stone Spanish ", It is simple to use and makes learning Spanish much eaiser and you can progress at your own pace

Read this reviews before You buy...

"What's the quickest and easiest way to learn Spanish?", I bought this product after reading the many reviews at Amazon (good and bad) and seeing countless ads in the media. This seems to be a pretty decent piece of software for learning Spanish. But with one caveat:

You must already have a basic knowledge of Spanish. This software is more of a vocabulary builder for someone that has already achieved a basic understanding of the language. What you do with this software is see pictures and repeat phrases. You are not taught any grammar from this course. And much of the vocabulary is not useful for conversation. This course does a very thorough job teaching vocabulary while using the present progressive tense in Spanish. But there's a problem with that. Spanish speakers don't use the present progressive tense as frequently as we do. I often hear them use the present tense where we like to use the present progressive tense.

From the graphics and the software's interface, I get the impression that a new version of this software has not been created in many years. The graphics are from the 1980s. Possibly, the 1970s. If I was involved with this company's management, I would invest more into upgrading the software and spending more money on Research and Development and less money on advertising. If customer's think the software is great, the customers will do the advertising for the company through simple word of mouth. With that said, I did learn more from the Rosetta Stone Software than I learned before I started with the software.

I won't say that I am a connoisseur of Spanish-learning products, but I will say that I have spent enough money and time on language-learning products to know something about what it takes to learn Spanish quickly and easily. After spending so much money on learning-Spanish products that I am embarrassed to tell anyone how much I spent, this is an outline of the method that I found to be the fastest and easiest:

I advise getting a good phrase book like Easy Spanish Phrase Book: Over 770 Basic Phrases for Everyday Use (Dover Easy Phrase) Get a good dictionary Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary And verb conjugation book The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs: 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs and an audio Spanish course Learning Spanish Like Crazy: Spoken Spanish, Vol. 1. Be careful with the audio based Spanish product that you buy because many of them don't teach the Spanish that Spanish speakers in the U.S. and Latin America use today. The audio Spanish lessons that have done the best job for me teaching me the Spanish that Spanish speakers use in the U.S. and Latin America today is
Learning Spanish Like Crazy: Spoken Spanish, Vol. 1. I can appreciate the Spanish that I have learned from other courses, but the Spanish that I have learned from LSLC has been the most useful and practical Spanish that I have learned.

"Awesome Product", I bought this for my mom and she loves it. It's the best program she has ever used and she would recommmend it to others. Very user friendly and comprehensive. It is challenging which is a huge plus.

"excellent", I took Spanish in high school and bought this to review for my college classes. Very helpful. If you have never had Spanish it's wonderful. My mom uses it and is learning a lot.

"Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin Americ) Level 1 & 2", This really works, but you must stick with it. Not as convenient as CD's that you can play in your car, bur definately the thing if you're serious about learning the language.

"AWESOME PROGRAM!", The program can be hard to follow if you don't know how it works. Many of the negative reviews seem to be from people who don't completely understand the purpose and method of the program. If you don't get it, go to your local mall and ask the rosetta stone employees to show you a demo. It clears everything up 100%. The program is an immersion program so there is absolutely no english in the program. Therefore, you are learning like a child again through picture and sound recognition(without translating back and forth from English into Spanish). I love the program and everyone should try it out. Beware! If you buy it from amazon you do not get the 6 month return policy.
