"OK, but takes too long to set up."
After installing Turbotax the download of the update took about 1 hour and 45 min. on a 56k
modem. Makes one wonder if there was anything on the original disk.

"Updated: down to 1 star from 5...was: Excellent, as usual"
...I purchased this in mid-March. Let's face it, buying tax software early invites a frustrating experience. There are last minute tax changes and bugs that will need ironed out. If you HAVE to have your taxes submitted in January, go to H&R Block.

Otherwise, TurboTax continues to be a rock-solid choice.

I have a complex return, with capital gains, mulitple income sources including K-1s, lots of optional schedules to fill out and a lot of deductions. TurboTax handled it all without a single glitch, as usual.

The "reminder" feature that lets you know when you have an income source or deduction from a previous year that you didn't take this year is a real life-saver. Not only can you catch a deduction that otherwise would have been forgotten (where DID you put that Salvation Army receipt?) but forgetting that stock dividend can trigger an audit.

The E-File is a great feature and worked like a charm, as did the state download and submission.

TurboTax has made tax time a minor burden where it used to be a multiple day consuming nightmare.

...it is worth every penny, and it is deductible if you itemize!

Also, if you are the kind of person who waits until the last minute, TurboTax is the ONLY way to go. Within a couple of hours your tax return will be ready to submit!

"Good product, but buggy"
This is the first year I'm using tax preparation software to do my return (I am using it on a Mac OS 10.2.3 machine, with add-on for California). I would say that TurboTax's interface for data entry is quite friendly and easy to use. It is the best aspect of the program. And if your employer and/or financial institutions enable downloadable tax data, then you can download the data directly to the software. Definitely diminish the chance of miscalculation, and for the latter, errors for data entry.

However, it has an annoying bug. I would like to save my returns in PDF format. What better way to do this than to use Mac OS X's "Save As PDF" feature? Turns out that it doesn't work as seamlessly as I expected. Looks like TurboTax's algorithm to print is to spool several print jobs to print your returns. In the case of the "Save As PDF", this will result in several PDF files. This creates a problem, because "Save As PDF" will write these jobs to only one file, and so the later print jobs will overwrite the earlier ones. Also, looks like the last print job is always the barebone federal return (no worksheet). If you try to print both federal and state, first it will send a job for the complete federal return, then the complete state return, and lastly the barebone federal return. Because of the overwriting, the PDF for the barebone federal return is the only one you'll get. One not-so-ideal workout is to time the spooling (race with the computer!), and quickly rename the file during the processing of one of the earlier print jobs. After several tries, I managed to get the PDF files of the returns that I want. Of course, you need lots of patience and fortitude to do this.

To summarize, TurboTax is a good product, and in the Mac version there's no annoying protection scheme as in the Windows version. But I get the impression that it's not extensively tested, probably because of the pressure to update the product every year.

"DO NOT BUY THIS AWFUL PRODUCT"
I should have listened to the other reviews here, but the fact that I'm running OS X 10.2 on a G4 gave me hope.

As reported extensively elsewhere, this product is buggy and poorly designed.

Some examples:

* Key questions for tax form data entry are obscured by buggy graphics -- I oftentimes had to make reasonable guesses.

* After keying everything in, I was prompted to download the latest updates. This process took over *3 hours* on a phone line. It would have been faster to drive to work over the weekend to get a T1 line.

* The internet setup did not use my system defaults for internet connections. I have some knowledge of this and was able to set them correctly, but doubt if many people have the knowledge necessary for this step.

* Because I have multiple options for filing status, I expected and was led to believe that the software would analyze which one is best for me. It did not. When I changed the filing status by hand, instead of walking me through the necessary changes to the forms, it simply complained about the errors to my forms. I now have no idea if the return I have completed using this software is correct -- simply because I want to analyze "what if" with my filing status.

* The software is filled with ads for financial institutions. When encouraging you to save in an IRA, it insultingly places advertisements for a few investment houses nearby. ...

Bottom line: It is easier to fill in U.S. tax forms by hand, including multiple filing options, than to use this buggy, poorly designed, frustrating, and annoying software.

Back it goes -- don't waste your time.

"Mac Version is Awesome with Minor Quirks"
The Mac version of Turbo Tax is as realiable and hearty as its predecessors on PC with the added bonus of no spyware or installation restrictions. The downside is that importing previous tax returns is a hassle... I ended up re-entering a few essential details rather than struggle with the conversion process. Having said that, I don't regret switching to a Mac or using Turbo Tax... it's made filing my annual return a lot easier and stress free now that I've moved beyond the simplicity of basic IRS forms.

"Smooth and Easy!", Installed smooth and easy. Produced a great tax return in record time. My only criticism is the online updating (at the end of the tax prep process) seemed to take forever, even though I have a broadband internet connection. But it finally completed and did the update without errors.

I have used both the PC and Mac versions of Turbotax, and in all instances I prefer the MAC version because of its ease of installation and lack of problems.

"Good product gone bad", I used TurboTax in 2000 and 2001; it was simple and error free. But 2000 was a nightmare in several respects. When I tried to locate the self-employed health deduction location, for instance, I simply got a message telling me what had to be done and the software didn't take me there. I had to do a manual override. It kept telling me there were errors (I was using EasyStep) but when I would fix the ones it found it would tell me there were more than before. I opted to download the current upgrades, which, it said, would take just a "few minutes." At 56k it too an hour and a half. Then it printed the quarterly estimated tax vouchers for 2003 with letter across it saying that they required a software update to print properly. We're in July of 2003 and they aren't ready? They have turned a relatively simply and effective application into an abomination. It took me 5 hours to do our simple taxes, and I eventually had to just send the forms off with "error" still being reported. The prior two years I spend about 2 hours using TurboTax.

"On the down slide", Many errors, awkward. I've used Macintax and turbo tax for many years. This year was the most problem filled one yet. Ane they make the filing rebate harder and harder to collect.
My last year with this.

"Worked nearly flawlessly for me", I have used both Kiplingers and TurboTax products in the past with good results, and this year's effort using TurboTax for Mac was no different. Installation and updates were easy, and with broadband access, I had no problems with download times (including the download of the state version).

Yes, there are a few ads scattered throughout, which was a bit annoying since I'd paid for the product (as opposed to an ad-based online site). But that was a very minor annoyance to me that was no worse than the average web site ads we've all learned to ignore.

I did wait until mid-March to file, in part so as to take advantage of any product updates & bug fixes. That meant starting and stopping work on the return several times, and it was very simple to pick up where I'd left off. I e-filed and got my return through direct deposit in about a week.

The only problem I have is a result of my own carelesness: I lost the rebate form for the state program, and so far cannot find a downloadable rebate form on the Intuit web site.

All in all, I'd have no reservations at all about recommending this product or about buying it again next year. (Used on a G4/400, 384mb RAM, broadband access)

"2002 OSX Version a Disaster", I have used Turbo Tax on a Mac since 1997 with good results. I don't know why the 2002 version was such a disaster but perhaps it is related to this being the first one written for OSX. ...

In short, probably my worst software experience in 25 years of using computers. ...

"At Intuit, Customer Service and Tech Support are oxymorons", If you suffer from low blood pressure, trying to use this product is a great way to elevate it in a hurry. First, you have to download a huge update file to make the program current. Second, part of that file, the now infamous mfdiper section, wouldn't download for me and I am running System 9.2 (Intuit admits it won't work with System 8). WARNING: mfdiper can cause system freezes. Third, after failing to download the update file I tried to contact Intuit for tech support. The live chat box came up and promptly, filled with hundreds of lines of computer code. I was unable to get through with online chat which precluded any chance of calling their service number to pay for the privilege of finding out why their download won't download. I, too, am a long time turbotax user but this was the last straw. No wonder Intuit stock was just downrated...

"Good federal form help, lousy everything else", First, the praise. This is the first time I've used Turbo Tax. Filling out my federal forms hasn't been this easy since I filed the 1040EZ in high school. The program provided simple answers to all of my uncertainties. My federal forms were ready in less than half of the usual time. Now, the criticism. All of the help that was so available for the federal forms was completely absent in the state (New Mexico). If I didn't understand a question, the program referred me to the state's own publications, which I then had to download directly from the state. Basically, I did the state form all on my own. Concidering download time, it took longer to complete my state than if I had picked up the forms at the post office. If it weren't for the rebate, I'd be furious. Who pays ... for this garbage? Next, the e-file completely failed. According to the program, my file was corrupt on arrival at the Intuit filing center. It allowed 3 tries before telling me to file by mail. Nevertheless, I was charged ...for e-filing. The website will tell you that they claim no responsibility for this and that the money is non-refundable. Fortunately, most of it is covered by the rebate.
In brief, if you want help completing your federal forms, this program is great. Forget about state filing or e-filing. They were a total waste of time and money.

"A 10 year TurboTax for Mac user swithes to TaxCut", I am a highly experienced computer user and had been a Mac-In-Tax/Turbo Tax for Mac user for more than ten years. My negative experience with the 2002 version (OS/9) of this non-functional product was extremely frustrating, time consuming and disappointing. My recommendation to Mac users is to switch to TaxCut.

When I started working with an early release version of the software which I had ordered last year, I was unable to successfully download the TurboTax federal updates and the Pennsylvania state software. Downloads would begin, but then terminate before the download could be completed. I retried numerous times and, on one or two occasions, the download completed itself. However, the system always crashed during the installation process, and the updates could not be installed. After unsuccessful results from the TurboTax free FAQ and on-line chat (with Technical Services) I signed up for a PIN at $...for the privilege of speaking with a live person regarding the problem. This phone number put me in contact with a Windows Technical Support representative who was unable to solve a Macintosh issue - I paid for a service which I did not receive. It was finally determined that the early release software which was shipped to me in December was defective, and Customer Service sent me a new CD at no cost.

I installed the software from the new CD and encountered the same problems with the downloads and updates. Ultimately, I gave up and ordered H&R Block's TaxCut for Mac. It transferred last year's data from my TurboTax file and worked flawlessly. During installation, I had to contact Tax Cut's technical support department. I am pleased to report that they are competent and responsive, and there is no charge for the service.

"Intuit FINALLY fixes major bugs in its updates!!!...", Intuit has indeed corrected the problems with the Mac updates!! UNFORTUNATELY, it took them so long that I was forced to wait over 5 WEEKS!! Although they were able to fix this mess with those machines still running OS 8.1/8.5, I WILL NO LONGER PURCHASE TURBOTAX. I can't tell you how MANY hours were wasted downloading files that would not install on a Macintosh with 0S 8.5.1. I will give Tax Cut a try next year.
