"Sony ECM-DS70P stereo microphone EXCELLENT!"
As a choir director, I have been looking for years to find a small, simple to set up, microphone and recorder. Cassette boom boxes used to be so useful in the "old days" to help the choir hear themselves. Now that I have used the Sony Electret Condenser microphone with my Sharp mini disk, I can say my search is over.

There is excellent quality with the full range of dynamics from the quietest to the loudest moments. There is outstanding stereo separation giving the sound of the actual theater. The digital quality was just fine to make CD's of the Christmas concert for members to enjoy in the future.

It is so sensitive that it does pick up the sound of the recorder so you must use the small extention cord and set it away from the recorder. I just put in into a tabletop microphone stand and put it on the edge of the stage. Be sure to put it on a thick piece of carpet since it will pick up the stage sounds of any walking - or even the director moving back and forth.

I strongly recommend the Sony Stereo Electret Condenser Microphone.

"Works Well"
Is a little Hissy, but picks up well. I wish it was a little more sensitive to the midrange, as it seems to pick up base and extreme highs easier. I use it with a micro br to record our band live for learning purposes and for that it works great.

"Only Practical Solution for Any Type of Personal Stereo Recorder"
This is the only mic that is practical for use with my (apparently discontinued) Panasonic stereo cassette recorder (the onboard mic is monaural). Ignore the cord and simply attach the mic directly to the machine for a package that is scarcely any larger, heavier or less convenient than the original machine. Surprisingly, Panasonic offers no mic for the recorder, even though it's seen at least two editions. With the cassette machine I notice no improvement in sound quality with the higher-priced, stick-shaped Sony stereo mic.

Having had a couple of misfires with a digital mini-recorder (admittedly not "mechanical" breakdowns), I'd still recommend a cassette machine, if only for a back-up.

"Awesome microphone, recommend use of a stand."
This is an EXCELLENT mic. I use this paired with a Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Voice Recorder. The cord which comes with this has a fabric shroud, which picks up noise, so it's not used. The Mic is very sensitive, and I use it with a Cell Phone Holder (Car type with a suction cup) as a Microphone stand. The clarity of the Mic is very good, it's used to record Podcasts with guest speakers as part of a mobile studio setup. Highly recommended!

What our customer's say!

"solid microphone", its good
i tried it on my other computer
the sound is good

"Great for the money!!", In a move that is very unlike me, I bought this microphone to make stereo recordings of some piano pieces I had to perform while away from home (and my recording equipment). I have to admit, for Sony, this product is pretty bang-on! The microphone is responsive across a broad spectrum of dynamics and acoustically accurate, although I typically stereo microphones with an X or Y arrangement for good presence. With careful positioning (and a rubber cushioning pad), this microphone achieved some almost studio-quality recordings (bearing in mind that I was playing on a meticulously maintained $150,000 piano...)!
The ONLY thing keeping me from giving this microphone 5 stars is that it's not powered, and there was no way to enable it to work with my MacBook Pro without buying extra hardware. Not to worry though: It wasn't terribly costly. I bought a Griffin iMic ($39.99) and used it in conjunction with Audacity without a hitch! The recordings I made were so good that my friends and family were unable to tell which recordings were made in a studio (with professional-quality equipment) or with the iMic/Sony mic combination when put on a mixed CD.

Bottom Line: This microphone was able to capture the most diminutive harmonics and loudest fortissimo's without any problems at either end of the spectrum, and I would recommend this to ANY amateur/intermediate performer wishing to capture a high-quality recording of their work!

"Sounds real good, but...", I purchased the Shure ECM-DS70P for use with my portable DAT machine. It does a good job of recording, nice frequency range, and good stereo, and a great price. The one drawback is that touching the mic or even the cord while recording imparts a very loud noise on the tape. Since there is no shock mount for this mic, I would suggest mounting it where it cannot be touched.

"Clandestine delight", I've been using mine with excellent results for 4 years now. I find the stereo separation acceptable under most circumstances. I use Sony MZ R700, R900, and MZ N1, and I can't tell one from the others under most recordings. It CAN be overloaded/distorted, but I've only found that in cases of really bad room acoustics and loud enough to be uncomfortable and distort even my listening. I've never been caught, as the whole rig can be set to "all green but hold final count" status before entering the venue, and then easily hidden as intermission lights come up. Only complaints are that there is no (known) windscreen available, and the clip is not really up to the task, and easily lost. I made a replacement with a paper clip and an alligator clip. Elsewise, this mike has been the single consistent tool in my mission to preserve live music shows. All of which are folk & alt.country.

"Not a quality mic!", I am a completed music education major, strong in both choral and instrumental suits, and this microphone is fine for the speaking voice but is not good for recording music. First of all it has a significant amount of noise that occurs even when the environment is completely silent. I used it on my laptop and on my digital recording device and both had large amounts of noise. Also the lower hertz(lower pitches or bass) are not very audible. The playback doesn't have a good sound in the lower ranges. I wish someone could e-mail me or tell me another mic that is of great quality in this same range. I have yet to find one.

In short, don't buy this mic if you want to record music. Save your money I wish I had.

"Sopranos Beware!", This mic works great in almost any situation -- unless you're an operatic soprano. It can't handle the top notes and gets blown out and distorted -- and exactly on your "money notes" that are critical to recordings! If you aren't singing above the staff or are singing pop or are recording sounds or speaking voice, it is an incredible mic.

"Very Pleased", I bought this microphone mainly to record class lectures, and when I first tried it with my Alienware laptop it was very noisy and quiet. Apparently my laptop's microphone port didn't provide enough power for it to function properly, since it does say that one of the requirements is that the recording device provide "plug-in power". I tried it on another laptop (a dell inspiron) and it worked amazingly, when listening to the playback on headphones it was hard to tell the difference of what was on the recording and what was going on around you. The stereo separation adds a lot to the recordings.

I was still determined to make it work with my alienware so I did a little research and found the Griffin imic usb audio input device. I was very happy to find that this microphone worked with the griffin imic, MEANING THAT THIS IF YOU PAIR THIS MICROPHONE WITH THE GRIFFIN IMIC, IT WILL WORK WITH ANY COMPUTER THAT HAS A USB PORT!!

As for the quality of recordings, this microphone is very sensitive which can either be a good thing or a bad thing. It picks up someone lecturing in front of a class of about 70 very clearly, but it also picks up every person coughing or shuffling paper in the room. Ive recorded my sister playing flute and my friend playing guitar and it sounds very good. The stereo separation is very good and makes recordings sound very realistic. Overall I'm very pleased with this mic. I'm sure there are nicer better microphones but for the money it would be hard to beat this one. It looks really cool too.

"I like it!", This microphone is really good. i can do any recording with it. is my partner and i love it

Peace.

"This is great!", I originally had a large microphone on a long cord that pugged into the jack of my Olympus digital voice recorder but the connection was not always reliable due to the weight of the cord/mic. Sometimes I would record music and there would be no sound! This tiny microphone solves that problem because the connection within the jack is much more stable. Sound quality is good and serves my purposes quite well.

"Decent Mic for the price", I use this mic with a Boss Micro BR. Audio quality wise it's not much better than the onboard mic, but it does provide some stereo seperation that the onboard mic does not. I use it to record practices of my band.
There are much better mics out there, but expect to pay for them. It did not make sense to buy a mic that was more expensive than the recorder I am using. I think the combination of this mic and this recorder is pretty nice.
