Others say..."Best Tactical Spae Sim EVER!"I havn't played Homeworld 2 - but - This game is quite simply the most beutfuil, well ballanced, well designd peice of software i have ever had the forutne to play - its one of the few games that i want to play from both wsides, and replay again and again! Theres a wide vairety of ways to accomplish each mission - but the standard- build the most/biggest/best ships rule does apply frequently - but tactics and placement of units is very important too. You feel like you are taking part in a movie on a epic scale more than playing a game - becuase the grpahics are just so out of this world. This game is far too quickly overlooked by many people - and the demo doesnt do it justice. The Story is brilliant too, and the technology trees are excellentley set up. For 10 bucks - u should buy two - one for u and one for ur friend! "hegemonia:legions of iron"This is very good game it has devolped graphic qualty and the in-game atmospheare is very good a few bad things are very bad mpgame and a very little number of options in instant game or skirmish. There are a few maps but they are not enough for a player who wants to play skirmish.Spgame is interesting but game i little bit slow and i would like to make it go fast so i push buton for speed increasing and it says:``+1 +2 +3 +4 +5`` but it still goes very slowely and thats is the most important thing to keep player by the computer...Garfield:) "its fun"I picked up Hegemonia (...), after looking at the box and admiring the graphics. Being an animator, graphics are the first thing I look at when I look at a game, followed by how much thought it requires. Based on those two catagories, I give the game four stars. The graphics are nothing short of amazing, and far superior to Homeworld's. There is a huge amount of strategy involved, at least when going against the computers in the skirmish maps, specifically "friends." Apparantly the map was intended for 8 players, not 2... In the larger maps the limit on battleships- because thats what it comes down to typically, a war between battleships- is somewhat bothersome. You are limited to either 6,7, or 10 squadrons of ships. As near as I can tell, the game randomly selects one of those numbers as your squadron max. You can only have 1 battleship per squadron, and when you and your enemy's empires span four star systems, 7 battleships simply aren't enough. However, the limit on ships forces you to rely on tactics more so than in strategy games like Generals or Heroes IV, where you can recruit unlimited numbers of troops. All in all, 4 stars. Strategy is good, graphics are excellent. And there's a way to change the ship limit by editing some of the game files.
"A Tremendous Disappointment" You'll read a lot of reviews noting how nice this game's graphics look. That's true, up to a point, though anyone with a bit of astronomical sense begins to reel once you see immobile planets all trailed by orbital lines and incorrect scale. Unfortunately, the graphics are the only thing going for this game. The gameplay is very lame, the victory conditions in each mission can be vague and inconsistent, some of the conventions (such as each colonization ship carrying 30 million people) are counter-intuitive or just plain silly, and the storyline script is written by adolescents. When it comes down to it, "Hegemonia" is not worth spelling, let alone playing or purchasing. Do yourself a favor -- avoid this game like the plague and buy "Homeworld 2" instead.
"Space strategy at its best!" I got this game on a whim because I needed a fix. I was happy with the box and description so I decided "what the heck." I have more than upset the wife due to max game play time (ie anywhere from 2-9 hours a sitting.) Graphics are top-notch with the upclose battle scenes. The strategy allows you to decide what direction you want to go in research and politics. While it did not recieve Game of the Year from others, it did from me!

What our customer's say!
"Very cool, just takes some learning to get into", I really like this game. The concept is cool, the graphics are bloody good for a game of its age, and the atmosphere - while not as theatrical as Homeworld - is compelling and immersive.
What holds me back on this game is the interface. It is, admittedly, a bit clumsy. Others have noted that there is not a true 3D interface - the geometry of the game is built around a 2-D plane with a Z-axis, but you can't really get away from that plane. That's fine. I think we'd all get a bit lost in real 3-space, unless you're a fighter pilot.
I don't think "steep learning curve" is an accurate term here - just takes a little getting used to. Otherwise, a fun fun game.
"Oldie, but Fun", The game could be compared to either of the Homecoming games, but I find it favorible for the simple reason that it is simpler. Yes, I will admit the number of units the player can pick from in LOI is very limited, but I think the game more than makes up for it in how they are used. Like in any traditional game (ie, chess, checkers, etc) the player is limited to the number of pieces given, and no more. The way the player utilizes those units determines gameplay. Anybody can simply overwhelm an opponent with superior numbers, but correct and efficient strategies with limited numbers on both sides seperate the rank amateur from the worthy foe. LOI is an older game and shows it in the UI, most especialy the tech tree. That said, the tech tree is long and you have to make tough choices to advance against an AI that is bloodthirsty and an enemy that is at almost every stage more advanced than your own units. The SP storyline is really very good if you can overlook the dialogue (it's a hungarian company, what do you expect? it wasnt made for english in the first place). I wont comment on the multiplayer as I'm not interested in the multiplayer aspect, but the scenarios are very challenging and creative, though no new scenarios have been developed since (I think)the company was bought out. Where the game realy excells are in the areas of music and graphics. The music is second to none, and I still think the graphics are better than many games to come out even int the past few years. (Side note, I bought Star Wars Empires at War in the hope that LucasArts would be abble to provide an improved version of LOI, but I was sadly mistaken, the game pales becide LOI in every single way despite being years newer). The graphics even hold up to standards set by games made today. Bottom line is, I have played a lot of newer games in the Space RTS genre, but I grew quickly disgusted and went back to LOI.
"Fun for a while", I'm a big fan of really any kind of strategy game, and Hegemonia is one of them. Its fun for a few days, and then it gets old again for me, sits on the shelf for 8 months, and then I play it again. Theres no online community for it, so dont bother with online play. FYI theres a security vulnerability in the game that becomes exposed in the latest patch, if you look around with google, you'll find info on it, its all gibberish to me.
I like it, but I think I'm the exception. I wish I could have a couple hundred units flying around instead of something like 10
"Awesome game, this is!", Writer's profile: 15 years old, love sci-fi stuff, not very paitent.
Hmm... Where do I start to praise this game? Oh yes:
1: The graphics of this game are great! The battles are incredibly life-like, and the planets look really cool! Oh, and the weapons are cool as well. Pretty amazing that this game works on Windows 2000 and I think 98 & 95.
2: The tech tree is great! Lots of different researches allow many different kinds of fleets. Plus, you can alter planets through terraforming.
3: There are a few different levels of each kind of ship(Cruiser, Battleship, etc.), as well as different kinds of each ship (e.g. Missile, Quantum, and others).
4: Multiple star systems allows for lots of hiding places.
5: Multi-system battles make this game all the more cool.
Downsides: Not many, except for the fact that the AI is really hard to beat sometimes, and that the enemy spies are REALLY ANNOYING.
Recomendations: get this game if you love sci-fi, especially if you liked Homeworld 1,Homeworld 2, or Homeworld: Cataclysm.
I'm writing this article because this is a really good game and i think it is definatly worth getting, and also to argue with whats-his-face who wrote the Nov. 2002 article insulting Hegemonia. I WILL GET HIM!!!
thank you, and goodnight
"Great Game", This game was very good in many respects. Whats cool about this game that you cant do in a game like homeworld is colonize and terraform planets and moons, that was awesome, also, whats cool about this game is you get to research 100s of new technologies, its really cool, also the strategy aspect of it is cool as well. It does kind of have to grow on you though, but once you get into it its definately worth it. I'd reccomend this game to anybody who loves space games and isnt the pickiest person around. This game did have its flaws but its highpoints definately overshadow this
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy..."A Feast for the Eyes", This is a great game. It's a wonderful real-time strategy game, which is what it claims to be. Hegemonia is not an empire-builder, and it never claims to be. The interface is not very intuitive. That is to say, it does not work like other games in the same genre, or 3d games in general. If you look at the manual, though, where they explain moving the camera, it suddenly makes sense. I can move my fleets or my camera wherever I would like, effortlessly. Visually, the game is absolutely stunning. Watching the battles are like watching Babylon 5, in real-time, on your PC. Wonderful particle effects, location-specific damage, and the most beautiful explosions you've seen on your PC to date make it really difficult to decide whether to watch a battle up-close and personal or back up to see the whole panoramic view. Each is equally impressive. The camera is always smooth, zooming and panning to your destination. The only time there is a hard cut is when you switch solar systems. Their system of multiple solar systems divided by static jump points is a great way of providing different fronts for your battles, and being able to decide what planets to colonize and what static and mobile defenses to build. What I think is best of all is that this game is simple. There isn't a huge involvement in learning to play the game, and it's not so simple that, once you know how to move your ships around, you can just jump in a start playing. Everything fits together to make the game not only a fun real-time strat, but a full multimedia experience. I've had a remarkable time playing the game in the first two weeks I've owned it, and I look forward to a long time replaying it at higher skill levels.
"Get Patch 1.07 or Later for XP and Nvidia", Bought the game March 15, 2003. Out of the box it was patch level 1.05. Appeared at first to run fine on Windows XP Home Edition on high end machine with nVidia graphics card. But I could not move the ships nor do much of anything else, at least not very often and not very consistently. It appeared to be an expensive screen saver. Thought the problem was me. But after six hours of pure frustration I finally realized the game simply was not working properly and decided to look for help. Discovered there is a patch 1.07 that seems to have cured my problems. This is a large patch, 17.9 MB download. The descriptor for this patch at the Hegemonia web site says that installation of patch 1.07 will allow both mouse buttons to work, and my experience with the game out of the box was that the right mouse button was simply not doing anything at all most of the time. If running the game on Windows XP, the Hegemonia web site support info says that an alternative fix might be to try running it in an emulation mode for Windows 98 or ME. I note that DreamCatcher does not list Hegemonia in its list of XP compatible games. Caveat emptor. Five stars for graphics alone. One reviewer said it did not have a starmap, but it does! Just hit the spacebar to toggle it on and off. This is a complex game and you will discover the manual is not in there just to make the box weigh more. You will need to know what the keyboard commands do to make it work. While on the Hegemonia web site pick up a copy of the campaign walkthru, a .pdf file that has printing locked out, so you will have to download the walkthru .pdf file for offline consultation, which you will feel the need of sooner rather than later. This game has gotten excellent reviews from the professional reviewers at the major gaming web sites.
"This totally [stinks]!", I really tried to like this game, but after playing it for a couple days I just gave up. It really doesn't deserve the one star I'm forced to give it. The controls are quiet frustrating. Not only are there too few options for piloting your fleet, but half the time your ships won't do what you tell them. For example in Episode 1 Earth4, One squad kept flying off towards Mars, eventually causing me to have to start the mission over. My second major gripe is the story. I swear Ed Wood could have come up with something better. The voice acting sounds like the people were given a script to read, and they did exaclty that without feeling the need to make it sound convincing. Also you'd think anyone that bought this or similar games would at least have some degree of interest in space exploration and the science surounding it. However, your character seems quiet uneducated and outright stupid at times. Early on he scoffs at being told of the need to research new tech. I'd hope by the 2nd century people would abandon anti-science attitudes, and realize that wormholes and ion drives aren't exactly flint axes or fire. The sound and graphics are pretty nice though. Maybe they justify the one star, but still I'd recomend anyone looking for an interesting, story driven game, stay away from the garbage that is Hegemonia.
"Broken Game", This game is broken, so don't waste your money on it. It's obvious that Dreamcatcher didn't do a propper QA on it. Trying to load saved missions will result in crashes. I did find that if you play the campaign missions from start to finish and just use the auto start save or the the in mission auto save to reload missions then crashes can be avoided. Just don't bother making your own save line. Also in one of the later missions you have to explore an unknown entity station from a lost race. The station has unbeatable defences. The mission says not to do any research until told too. During the mission you get some incomplete research from a different race and when you do all the research in that line you get a device that supposed to let the entity station think your a friend. To bad none of your ships can equip the device. You can't finish the mission and the game ends here. This game is broken and the company should be forced to reimburse the money they took for it or post an online patch to fix it.
"Hegemohia Legions of Iron", Save your money!!!! The graphics are great but the game ...! The single player mode is linear and boring. It is also buggy. In the multiplayer mode every time I try to play a scenerio the game freezes up and I have to restart my computer. I contacted the games tech support and the suggestion they gave me to correct it did not work. They also told me that other players are having the same problem. Please, save your money for something else. I wish I had!
