"What version is Amazon Selling now? " V3 is good, and V1 is Bad. Hopefully by now they are only selling V3 and have not updated the product description...
"Good for its designed use." I have been using and selling FVS318's for several years now and they have been uniformaly superb. Only later did I learn that these boxes have a few limitations. They are supremely easy to set up, plenty of internet-searchable support, and easy to VPN. The price is fantastic and they are rock-solid. However, they are very limited by their throughput and bandwidth. The older v1's and v2's are even more limited. If you need these things, get an FVS338. You get what you pay for. As a simple home router, they are great. Performance and speed will cost you more. Do your research and then make a smart choice, these things are NOT for everyone.
"Moderate functinality but good value - Intellimatic Inc" A little background, my experience level it over 20 year in software development, LAN's and WAN's. I do software development for a living. With that said, I purchased this router as a secondary appliance for a central VPN location. This VPN connection is IPsec not PPTP as you are normally used to with Microsoft's VPN RAS connection. If you use the VPN WAN miniport drivers provided by MS with XP you will find it will not work to connect to the device due to the lack of protocals that come with MS. This was later confirmed by tech support. Also if you try to set up an IPsec connection using the Security Policy Editor in MS XP you will find it very difficult and confusing. Some material exist on the web and you will not get help from Netgear unless you buy it. They dont guarantee that they will get it going either. If your time is valuable I suggest the following. A little secret thats normally not told to you, purchase the VPN ProSafe software directly from netgear. Pay the full price and they will give you unlimited support until you get it going. I'm sure with enough trial and error you may be able to get it going yourself but you will soon realize that your time was not worth the extra 25 dollars. Once working you can replicate it to other machines if necessary be aware that the software is a single user license. The software was created by safenet-inc.com an OEM to netgear, less expensive at netgear but behind a version so if you have Vista this may be a problem. You can actually use any VPN IPsec client software that has all of the functionallity. Also remember to turn on virtual adapter if you need to see the other persons IP Address. This is normally needed for support to other who access the router. The sofware has some bugs with it and incompadibilities. If you use McFee antivirus beware you may get a blue screen after install. Other IPsec clients may also cause the same problem. Do some research before installing and make sure your machine is backed up. I use ZoneAlarm and didnt have this problem.
The firewall is functional but fair in functionallity. Linksys provides more functionallity. Router seems fast and has enough abilities that are menu driven to get you going. Remember that this is a consumer product and not commercial grade. Overall for the price it provides alot of value for those who have the patience to work with getting the VPN working. The more you call the more they accelerate you in tech support.
If you are looking for a router for the purpose of VPN you may want to consider other routers that support MS CHAP, MS VPN PPTP RAS client. It will make your life easier and you dont have to buy additional software. If you dont mind the time and VPN is not your major concern the router is very easy to setup with a build in wizard.
"A great full featured firewall/router with no hassels" I bought this router when, after switching modem's to a Motorola SurfBoard, my old SMC Barricade router/firewall would not communicate with it. SMC was worse than useless when I sought service help since the router was out of warranty (note to self -- avoid SMC products in the future). Anyway, I bought this Netgear router as it was the only one with 8 ports and firewall at a reasonable price. Oddly this market segment seems to have whitered as 3 years ago when I last shopped, I recall more options.
Anyway, the Netgear has worked very well. I just connected it to everything and turned it on and it ran. I needed 8 ports because my house is hard-wired with CAT5 cable in each room and I like to use a wired connection when possible for security and speed. We are generally using at most 3 ports at once, so perhaps this is not the most testing application, but it has worked well for me. I'm not sure I'm getting all the benefits of the firewall, as some seem intended for more advanced users, but its has not failed in the 3 weeks its been working for me. My speed at each link was tested at 1.5M/Sec which perhaps is somewhat below what my modem direct would support, but that far exceeds the speed of most down-loads anyway. I've experienced none of the technical problems that some have reported, so perhaps the most up-to-date version has these fixed. I would highly recommend this router/firewall for anyone for a home with many ports or a small business.
"Great Product" Installed & worked just as stated in only a few minutes..... Just follow the start-up directions and all was well....

What our customer's say!
"BEWARE - Used to love it until I got a faster internet connection", I have had this for years (the v3), it has run solid as a rock. Setting up static IP routes for Network storage and network printers is a breeze, I used reserved IPs for almost everything on my network and this handles everything you can throw at it. Has been great for a small business, the firewall is solid as well.
Now to the reason I am shopping for its replacement. My internet connection used to top out at 5Mbs and this could handle it fine, however in our area we have now been able to upgrade to an 18Mbs connection, which this cannot handle. The thoroughput on this unit tops at just under 7Mbs, bypassing it and going straight to a cpu hits 18Mbs. It's a shame that this unit is just too slow to handle higher speeds as the world is headed that way.
If you have fast connection or plan to get one you have to avoid this unit as it just can't keep up, which is a shame because that is really its only drawback. If they come out with an updated version of this that can handle my connection I'd switch back, but for now looks like I am headed for the Dlink DGL-4100 as I am told by coworkers who have it that it handles the speed. If that one does or does not work with higher speeds I will put in a review of that one after I try it.
"A very good product, but the VPN is difficult for those with no patience.", I have 4 FVS318 (2) v.1, (1) v.2, (1)v.3. I have never had any problem with these routers ever. I use PPPOE and static IP address. They are very stable and are physically durable. My connection is below 5MB, so I cannot attest to any speed problem. The VPN can be difficult, but Netgear has documentation to solve this. The problem, is rushing through the set-up. I find that you need be calm and completely forget what you know (or think you know) and follow line-by-line, like an idiot (VPN for dummies), and take the baby steps with Netgear help documentation. Then it will work! And it will work well. I have used the (2) v.1 since they came out several years ago. It was one of the first (cheaper) router with SPI.
"Do not buy if you have a high speed connection", This router is nothing but slow. If you look at Netgears website and the technical specifications, which aren't listed on the box. This router supports a maximum LAN to WAN throughput of 12.5Mbps and 1.2Mbps with 3DES (VPN). I never got far enough to test the VPN, but I was only able to get about 8Mbps on the WAN. Removing this router and going straight to my cable modem I get 15Mpbs.
This router has no place in today's high speed broadband connection world. If you're desperate for a VPN router, spend a little more and get something that's going to work. This is just a waste of money.
"Ho Hum", This thing works okay as a hub/switch, but I can't connect to my ISP through the external modem. I was deceived by the product description because it guaranteed this device could handle "analog" phone service, which is all I have. Therefore I bought this product under the pretense of false advertising, and I'm stuck with a gadget that doesn't work. At least I bought it before the price went up $20. Now I have to have a network guru come in and see if there is any hope of salvaging my investment.
"DOA and horrid customer support", We are a small company with 6 employees and 4 workstations. We needed a hardware firewall and from the reviews this seemed like a good product. After 8 hours of trouble shooting with 3 different OS, the internet connection was still unreliable. This was a few days after getting the shipment. Finally we resorted to calling Netgear customer support. After a total of 1 hour on hold it was finally determined that A: the unit was malfunctioning and should be replaced. and B: we would have to pay for shipping in both directions and wait about two weeks to get a replacement. In this day and age that kind of customer support wears pretty thin. We opted to return for a refund and look at other brands.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Not compatable with cisco VPN", Unfortunately I had to return because I use the Cisco VPN at work and needed this to be compatible. It was very easy to set up but I had to uninstall the VPN client when I need to run my Cisco VPN client and then reeninstall the Netgear VPN client when I want to run it.
"Typical Netgear driver frustrations", Replaced a four-year-old FS314. Wouldn't work with standard drivers on the accompanying disk. Had to download updated driver, go through the setup process 2nd time. Still can't get the web administration feature to work when administrator IP addresses are filtered to a range or single IP. Solid build - as usual, My dissatisfaction with Netgear involves their buggy firmware, and has for years. You know what their Tech Support is like so no need to get beat a long-dead horse.
"Installation a snap!", Problems with the device itself, though. Perhaps Amazon has a bad batch of these routers? After returning one (a great experience, by the way) and getting my 2nd, Netgear recommended I get a third because the routers wouldn't hold a connex. Amazon would not send a third, but offered a gift. cert. for my trouble. Now I'm without one.. Perhaps looking for another source.
"Agree... Speed STINKS!", I had four of theese units in place and they all got replaced by the FVS338. The main reason is the speed. I have a lab and we tested the max Internet throughput of the FVS318's at 1.2Mbps! This is unacceptable. Oh yes, this is with the latest firmware.
Several calls to customer service left me infuriated at the lack of comprehension of the problem. I contacted their legal deptartment the same day. Several promises were made on Netgears part wich resulted in them having another level 1 tech call me again to insist I reinstall my OS!
I have successfully sued to get my money back.
With all of my venting done, I would like to say that I am still a fan of the Prosafe line and will continue to use it. But Netgear be warned, I will be all over you until you get this product line properly supported.
"But the big flaw is low throughput", Most reviews don't seem to mention a key spec - the throughput of a firewall. I just upgraded my cable connection to the new (up to) 30Mbs plan and bought an FSV318v3 firewall to use with it. Without the firewall in place, I measured about 25Mbs download speed. When I installed the firewall in between the modem and one computer, download speed went down to 6.5Mbs. I also discovered that if the "enable keyword blocking" checkbox is enabled, the throughput went down to 5Mbs, EVEN IF THERE WERE NO KEYWORDS!
This firewall is useless if you have a high-speed connection.
