"I'd give it a no star...."
While you can ah.....sorta edit....Video capture lags badly. When I say this let me also say that my machine is an Athlon64 3100+ with 512MB DDR 400, ATI 9600 128MB video (How I got the software)250gig 7200 ata 133 drive and it has done nothing but drop frames faster that it gets 'em....Yeah I have went thru all of the settings blah DMA blah defragement blah etc.... so when I transfer to DVD from VHS AND after waiting for the (Choke) render (like 3 hrs)well....jerky video on DVD is what I end up with.....Lets face it, pinnacle is crap...I am just glad that I did not have to purchase the software....Sure would like to know of somthing that actually works....

"Unreliable, more hassle than it is worth"
I received this software free with an ATI video card, and frankly, it's not worth that. The user interface and what you are supposed to be able to do ith it are all very good concepts. A neat product. However, if you plan on putting together anything longer than a few minutes worth of clips, this software doesn't seem to be able to handle it. we have about 18 minutes worth of videos, pictures, transitions, titles, etc. Most of the time the sound doesn't work at all. Sometimes the vide sound works, but not the background music. Sometimes it all works. We chopped our project into 8 "sub" projects, and the sound is working somewhat reliably again. We tried burning the project to a disc, but it crashed 10 seconds or so into the process every time. a patch seems to have addressed that, but now we are trying to figure out how to make a single DVD (based off of a single menu) with the 8 sub projects we are stuck with since the one big project will not work properly. Sadly, like most retail software these days - this seems to be a pretty good idea that had aboslutely no quality control whatsoever. As a computer programmer who works with lots of digital images/photoshop - I know my PC has the horespower - this software just doesn't work very well. This is the type of software that frustrates many computer users - when a program is supposed to do something and it simply doesn't. Or, sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn. Or, sometimes it does a little bit and sometimes... I've read that most video software at this price level is simlar, but I certainly will not pay for a pinnacle product after this experience. Hopefully there is something more reliable out there.

"Complete garbage!"
I agree with Dino "nada"s June 10, 2003 review. Way too much time rendering and compiling a 1 hour 25 minute video. On average, the program would crash twice before anything (if anything) is copied onto a DVD. By that time, more than half a day is wasted.

Amazon.com requires that a rating of one to five stars be awarded in order for my review to be posted. I am forced to rate this product a one star; one star too many.

Enough said!

"Great Editor, not great authoring"
This is a great editor. Then again, you must remember to check out pinnaclesys.com to get the patches to make it updated. I had few problems with it. In the 30+ editing hours I used to make a movie, it did crash twice, but those were 30 hours of intensive use. The features that I liked best were the simple drag and drop . I give it 4 stars on the basis of an editing software.

Authoring, on the other hand, is a different story. It takes hours to encode and output to a dvd. The menus are nice, if they fit your situation(which they usually do). I needed a program with complete control over the menu.

Pros:
User friendly for average user
Transitions are easily used
Automatic shift entire assets when you drop a scene into timeline
Cheaper than version 9
Scene detection (splits movie into scenes)
Titles look good
All work retained after a crash

Cons:
It is slow detecting scenes from video
Titles are a bit difficult to arrange
Crashes
DVD burning options

My suggestion: But Pinnacle 8 instead of 9 to save some money, they are practically identical(I have both and prefer 8). Edit with PS8 and output your movie as an MPG(which takes significantly less time). Then use a program like DVD-Lab (free 30 day trial), which is made to author dvd's, to burn.

"Pinnacle Studio 8: Perfect programme"
Review : Marijn Bouwhuis, 14 years old, (holland)
I think it's totally ridiculous how people think of pinnacle, they are just taking the piss. It just works well and probably their computers don't function well. The people who made this reviews are very negative about pinnacle. E.g. they say that it takes a long time to open Studio 8 (Same as Pinnacle), but when I open the programme it takes about 10 seconds to open. The effects are of very good quality, and you can do a lot of combinations. It's very easy to work with Pinnacle, and maybe the people who wrote this reviews want something more professional, but I don't know what I could use in this case, I already asked many people for a better programme, but they don't know I think the people should not blame Pinnacle when they want something which is more professional. They should just instantly buy something more professional.
Now why do I think Pinnacle is a very good quality programme.
You can upload videos straight from your camera into pinnacle, it's carefully explained and very easy to perfrom. You can also upload music and put it all into your movie.
When your movie is finished it's very easy to burn it on a dvd disk, it's even possible to do this with pinnacle.
Now I made a screenshot (with the bottom PrtScSysRq) of pinnacle studio 8. As if you can see it looks easy to work with. You can select whatever you want; upload videos, music, photo's. It's even possible to make a menu on the beginning of the movie, so that you can select which chapter you would like to see. Isn't that cool?? There is also a possibility to put titles in it, or make something in slow-motion, which is super, because when you've done something humorous and it's on tape, you can show it in slow-motion so you may even laugh louder! All this makes Pinnacle Studio 8 fun to work with.
The review of Dean A is quite funny, but I think he's not really serious. He should become a writer, maybe he's already. It's funny because he blames Pinnacle al the time; the stages he describes are really not true. He really describes it as a very slow programme, but really it isn't, I'll take up the time now how long it takes to open: One, two, three, four, five... Just five seconds!! He just needs to buy a new computer, so Pinnacle can also open in five seconds.

What our customer's say!

"decent/unworthy", I've never had experience with video editing programs, but I can tell you that Studio 8 does a pretty good job with creating "movies" (this is coming from an ameatur). What I don't like is that rendering takes a very long time, not too many fancy titles and I haven't (if its even capable of doing this) been able to play a video while there is text in front of it.

"Pinnacle Studio 8 Is Junk", Over and over I've worked, studied, upgraded, optimized, tweaked and sworn at Pinnacle Studio 8! No support, lots of crashes, and no finished discs! Not even a rendered image file! Junk program. A coaster. I've had it. Windows Movie Maker runs circles around it! Anyone know the CEO's address? I've got a litte package I'd like to send him/her. A junk program he/she doesn't even offer support for any longer.

"Great Results - And why I got them", I have been able to easily create 1-hr home video's using this software that are filled with menu's, transitions, special effects, smooth slow motion, imported mpegs/jpegs, music (you can use your own mpgs too), sound effects, on-screen words, everything. You can zoom in on the timeline to fine-tune each 1/30th of a second of video if you wanted! I used about 20 clips from footage of my kids on vacation. I found cutting and pasting clips, adding music, words, effects easy and the whole interface really intuitive - I didn't once need to read a help menu/file. Now, I suspect the reason it hangs up/crashes for other people is because they have insufficient computer resources. I have Windows XP, 512MB RAM, 50GB of FREE Hard Drive (you need 12GB per hour of video imported), Athlon XP2200 1.8Ghz Processor and a basic 32Mb Graphic Card. Basically, this was a $1000 computer system 4 yrs ago and I imagine pretty standard by todays standards. I do think the box's recommended system requirements is way too conservative. The box says you need only 128Mb of RAM, 800MHz processor, and a comment about 4Gb of disc space per 20mins of video. That would be insufficient. You will need to have a firewire (IEEE 1394) on your PC (super-fast USB-like port) to capture video which can be bought from Best-Buy for $40 and installed inside your computer on a spare PCI slot (it really is easy to do). If you have this, I think that the current price of v.8 at $25 (it was $100) is brilliant value for money. If your computer system is below what I listed, you may find this program hangs up. But with a moderately powerful computer system you will have a great video editing program with nice DVD's to share and keep.

"pretty darn impressive!", Many people have said that this program is not worth a penny, however, I truly disagree! Yes, it is true that it does lag and if you get frustrated with it and start clicking things it makes it worse. However, when it does have its melt downs, as long as you are pacient for a couple seconds it'll come back to you. However, make sure you save often just in case. The affects are absolutly fantastic! I have a special program for transitions though- Hollywood FX. With the program the transitions can be insanely cool. I've made lots of videos with ease. It has been so much easier to manage than I-movie. Also an easy to follow set up and its easy to learn! I am wondering though (the real reason I wondered onto this page) if any one knows how to put 4-8 different shots onto one screen as a split screen with all videos playing at the same time. Does anyone have any idea? The affect shows that it is available through the hollywood fx transitions, but I can only get it to work with two shots, even though the transition botton says it should do 4. If you have any suggestions please write it in a review. I'll be checking! Thanks! Great product though! I totally recommend it!

"This software really sucks", Hi there, straight to the point, this software is not worth a penny.....takes so long, I've even upgraded my computer with more memory, and dual processor, and still this program will not budge, spend your money elsewhere....thats where I'm going....

Read this reviews before You buy...

"why is it bad?", hi , i recently used this sofware and found it to be very good.
yes it does crash but i have never lost my work as it is all there when you start it up again, this is by far the most powerful software i have seen, but you dnt have to be a professional to use it. i reccomend it highly

"User-unfriendly garbage", I will never purchase a Pinnacle product after using Pinnacle Studio 8. Like someone else's review said, unless you are doing the simplest of projects, get a different piece of software, because the hours you will spend trying to get this piece of garbage to work will cost you more than ten times the purchase price of a good program. Menus are darn near impossible to get to work correctly. Rendering is not only slow, but 9 times out of 10 stops in random spots. 75% of the time on a project longer than 10 minutes the DVD burn will fail and you've wasted a disc and the 10 hours it took to compile it all. This, of course, is if you can get through a project without the program freezing altogether. Then Pinnacle has the gall to try to get you to upgrade to a new version that fixes "SOME of the bugs". From reviews of version 9/9.1, they are just as bad. NO THANKS!

"Pinnacle 8 RUINED MY LIFE.", First of all. Are you wondering if you should buy Pinnacle (8 or 9, the same thing)? Are you looking for a functional or at least friendly editing software? I can give you the answer!

STAY THE HELL AWAY FORM THIS TREMENDOUS CRAAAAP!!!!

Pinnacle made me cry, and I'm not joking or exagerating. It made me cry, when I lost my 43-min project when I'd just reached half of it... Also when I was doing the final render, and WITHOUT MY PERMISSION it'd just change the audio tracks, turn one song into another, repeat video files I didn't even include (sometimes I was just wating for it to include video files I hadn't even captured!), it goes wacko, crazy, mad, lunatic...it's frustrating. Not to mention all those times where I just layed too much of my trust on it, didn't saved every single thing I did and it'd just crash and end itself.

Why oh why, did I EVER thouhgt of buying this? Please listen to me, listen to us all and don't make the same mistake we did. DIE PINNACLE.

"Would be good if it worked!", The good: Pinnacle Studio is packed with features and is quite easy to use.
The bad: It's JUNK. Full of bugs even with the latest updates. It's slow too. STAY AWAY from this product!
Version 9 is even worse.

"Pinnacle Studio 8 Rocks!", Despite of all the other bad reviews Pinnacle Studio 8 is a fine product. I got the same advise from a DVD Support site. They advised me that Studio 8 can work with their DVD burners but only if I can make the application work. Good luck! I guess i am lucky because with Studio 8 my DVD movies are of superior quality to those other video programs such as Sonic My DVD or Sony MovieShaker. Also, Studio 8 is a more complete application because enables me to edit sound as MP3 files from Real One Player together in my videos. Therefore, Studio 8 offers a more integral interface with a sexy touch for the digital video lover. I am happy with Studio 8!
