Others say...
"Maybe my expectations were a little too high?" First I must state I am a huge Douglas Adams fan and enough of a Monty Python fan to know who Terry Jones is. So when I saw a book with the two names on the front, I was excited. I remembered hearing about the computer game of the same name, but had never gotten around to playing (still haven't) so I can't compare the two. Disclosures aside, I still can't believe I didn't enjoy this book. In the beginning notes, Douglas Adams says this book is "altogether sillier and naughtier" than his would have been. That's not the half of it. This novel is Terry Jones' doing a poor imitation of Adams. It reminds me of what Adams may have written when he was 14, complete with disjointed plot, terrible dialogue and sophomoric sexual humor. I actually found myself having to re-read passages because the editing was non-existant. This must have been a rush job, because I spotted quite a few spelling errors, and at least a dozen passages that were extremely confusing. Did I mention the dialogue was horrible? I made it through the entire book only because I can't bear to leave a book unfinished. However, I would not recommend it to anyone. I hear the game is much better.
"That sinking feeling --" -- and not just because of the starship itself. But let's look at that, first.
This isn't really a Douglas Adams book. It's an Adams video game, novelized by Monty Python's Terry Jones. The Starship Titanic, the hugest, most luxurious star cruiser ever, is set for its maiden voyage. Not just the biggest starship, it's also the biggest scam in history, one that shattered planetary economies even before its completion. And it's not really a starship, so much as a complex financial swindle and a barely-stable shell, about to be blown up for the insurance money. Peopled only by officious and arrogant robots, bewildered and unintentional stowaways, and by a ticking bomb, the story unfolds. Given Jones's writing and Adams's intellectual parentage, it's an amazing bit of comedy with a happy ending.
Jones's writing is good, but somehow lacks the sparkle of Adams's. It's also constrained by the video game that it emulates - face it, the video game isn't the richest of dramatic formats, so the book can't rise far above its origin. There's amusement to be had here, but it's a letdown after Adams's own writing.

"Whimsical Fun" It could be envisioned as another entertaining movie written, acted, and directed by the Monty Phyton's whole crew - skillful actors, writers, directors, cameramen, singers, dancers, jokers, complainers, etc. The amusement of wordplay, nuances of unthinkable actions, and basketfuls of basket case characters, make this screwy science fiction rather exciting. Mr. Jones's and Mr. Adams's sense of humor shines unadulterated on every page. The writing obeys the train of thoughts of a quirky story teller. Four earthlings find themselves swept up, up, and away into space on a magnificent spaceship full of robots. The reader would learn about the origin of the spaceship. Thus the humans embark on a short adventure but full of revelations. The ending is pretty exciting because for one, they practically race against time. Everything is tidied up pretty nicely as a conclusion by Mr. Jones. The language is easy and straightforward. The jokes are many and obvious. The dialogues are wholesome British humor, strictly Mr. Jones's way of making people laugh out loud.
"One of my favorite Douglas Adams tales!!" I have the audio version of this book that I often listen to as I'm falling asleep, but realized that there were parts that I've probably *never* heard, so I ordered the book. It is wonderful!! And even though it was truly Terry Jones that wrote it, you can definitely feel the whimsy that is DA thoughout. Also, there is just something appealing about the story for those of us who LOVE to travel. = )
"Very Amusing" Being a long time fan of Monty Python, I was surprised when I found a copy of this book. I had never heard of this project. Particularly with the recent rise in Douglas Adams's stock, I suspect this book will be getting more attention.
As a companion to a game project piloted by Douglas Adams, Terry Jones wrote "Starship Titanic". With parallels to the actual Titanic and the movie "2001", the book sees a luxury space ship run by an advanced intelligence system fall victim to SMEF, or Spontaneous Massive Existence Failure. When the ship disappears from one planet, it crashes on to Earth. While leaving Earth, it takes several Earthlings on-board for a voyage only to leave behind a key member of the crew with a key part of the intelligence system. Without a functioning intelligence system, the ship's bomb can not be deactivated. Fortunately, the bomb has a short attention span.
With a collection of irreverent twists that are the tradmark of Python humor, readers will enjoy this book. With the problems of aliens copulating with humans and a language barrier eliminated merely for the convenience of a science fiction writer, there are many good laughs in this book. While it is slow at times, I think most readers will enjoy it. I am actually surprised by the number of negative reviews given to the book.

What our customer's say!
"Better than people make it out to be", I just got done with this book and it's the first of douglas adams i've read. I actually really enjoyed it ive read it twice now and it is pretty hillarious. TOns of irony ect i give this 5/5 easy. Great sit down and read book.
"ok...just ok.", its an ok book. a bit "campy" and a bit more slapstick in humour then douglas adams books, lacking in the wit of douglas adams but still amusing.
"Terry Jones is a literary genius!", I picked this book up when I originally read the Hitchhiker's series back in the late 90's, but never got around to reading it. With next to nothing out there review-wise I kind of pushed it aside. Finally this year I set down and read it and was very surprised!
Although Douglas Adams had Terry Jones write this spin-off from a segment in HHGTG, Jones totally hit the nail on the head. The clever and reoccurring jokes that made the hitchhiker's series a great read is omnipresent here. Little quirks such as "The Journalist" being called "The" for short gets a laugh every time you read it. Along with that little HHGTG flair such as footnotes explaining items which would seem peculiar to an earth-bound reader make this a good read.
If you are a fan of Douglas Adams and couldn't get enough of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" this should be at the top of you list to read. I only wonder why Terry didn't step in when the screenplay for the movie was being written in the early 2000's. With his brilliant British humor I fully believe he could have saved a lot of embarrassment to the Hitchhiker's franchise!
"Save your money", Weak writing, unfunny, uninteresting, and one of the few books I may actually put down before I finish. I'm halfway through now and it's a struggle to force myself to read further. Don't waste your dough on this one, folks.
"Starship Titanic: A bit more successful than the original", Douglas Adam's Starship Titanic by Terry Jones is a hilarious book. It starts out describing separately what goes on at the building of the magnificent Starship Titanic, and the couple, Dan and Lucy. [...]

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Monty Python, who has nothing better to do, and can relate to many of the problems of the travel industry. There's no great meaning to this book, other than to have a few laughs. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is offended by Monty Python, or sexual references. To decide if you can handle the type of humor found in the book, just read the back cover. It will tell you all you need to judge it. Over all, this was a great and hilarious book that I would recommend to anyone.

Read this reviews before You buy..."Amusing", Totally silly, but with a decent set of characters, clever plot ideas, and skilled prose. Way better than I expected. "Very funny in places, but weak", Starship Titanic is an entertaining book, with a wit and humor on par with Douglas Adams' books. That's pretty much where the similarity ends, however - lovers of Adams will notice the lack of good tech jokes, and my favorite Adams technique, the "puzzle-piece-plot-device", which is when odd and insignificant events are later explained as being cataclysmic. There are also numerous sexually explicit situations in the book, which, while quite amusing, are definitely not Adams material. Because Starship Titanic is not an Adams book, I believe it should not be judged as such. As a result, the four stars this book deserves are not due to difference in writing styles, but to general lack of anything interesting -- while very funny in places, the plot is predictable and linear. The book also introduces characters that, while frequently discussed, are never really elaborated upon (Nigel and Titania come to mind). Read Starship Titanic if you like good Pythonesque humor, but don't expect to find anything in the caliber of the Hitchhiker's Guide. "Don't Panic!: Not good, but better than it should be.", The best part of this book is the three and a half page introduction written by Douglas Adams. This isn't to say that the rest of the book isn't good; it is, a light and entertaining read. But Terry Jones never quite captures the careless levity that is the trademark of the Hitchiker Trilogy. In fact, while reading the book certain dialog and situations appear stilted, and it's only if you realize that most of these areas are the result of incorporating material from the computer game of the same name does it become more excusable. Still, the result is a book that, while entertaining to read, wouldn't be particularly entertaining to read again. The short length of the book produces a feeling more of relief than regret, a sure sign of a thin plot.
"Absurd, bizarre, and extremely funny", "Starship Titanic" may be a slight science-fiction novel, but one shouldn't expect Homer's "Odyssey" out of story based on about a paragraph of writing from Douglas Adams' renowned "Hitchhiker's Trilogy". Even if it lacks a deep story or meaningful characters, "Starship Titanic" still has many things going for it. For starters, it's a short book, clocking in at a reasonable 256 pages and it reads very fast. Second, it was written by former Monty Pythonite, Terry Jones (in the nude, no less, according to the introduction), which gives it such and absurd, off-the-wall effect that one cannot help but be amused and drawn in by this book.
The story of a wayward luxury spaceliner that finds itself (and a few unwelcome passengers) transported from its planetary system to the one that houses Earth. Some earthbound humans end up boarding the ship for the adventure and then try frantically to get the ship to take them back home when they realize it's leaving Earth. On top of that, saboteurs from the other planetary system have planted a super-deluxe bomb aboard to destroy the ship. The humans want to get back home, the designers of the ship want to prevent the bombing to save their economy, and everyone is trying to figure why they can't seem to get an upgrade to First Class even though they're the only people on the ship. It's unbelievable the level of absurdity that takes place in this book, but there is no doubting how much fun it is. There is a space battle against a species that tries fix everything it damaged after a battle even though they don't fire weapons that can do any damage; there's an intriguing sexual encounter between the Journalist from the other system and a human female in the desperate seconds before they think the bomb will destroy them all and the subsequent attempts by the Journalist to get that female to repeat the performance; and then there's the bomb, itself. Lacking a special memory crystal, the countdown for this bomb cannot by stopped. Yet, it seems possible to distract him from the countdown, causing him to lose his place and have to start over again.
Having yet to read Adam's "Hitchhiker's Trilogy" (now at five books), I cannot comment as to how this little tale fits into the overall arc of that story and how it meshes with his writing style. That being said, Jones' Pythonesque influence makes this one of the craziest books to come along in awhile and definitely worth reading.
"an abomination", Get out of print already, "Starship Titanic". Your very existence is an insult.
