"Classy, stylistic, fun and great music to boot!"
Most of the time, when you see a game in the bargain bin for almost nothing, it means it's either outdated or it wasn't that much fun to begin with. Of course, every once in a while, you can find a gem. Freedom Force is one of those.

Freedom Force is a team-based classic comic-book action-RPG that doesn't compromise with its audience. No corners were cut in this game. You won't see any modern slang in here, or any lame attempts at out-of-context humor. All of the dialog in this game is strictly what you would expect from a rerun of the original Batman or Superman TV show. You get as convincing a 60's comic environment as possible.

This game is brimming with style. From the moment you first start playing, you're instantly immersed in a 60's comic book world. A great amount of detail was put into each and every environment, allowing your super-heroes to manipulate and destroy the environment ... everything from skyscrapers to cars and telephone poles can be used in combat, or destroyed little by little into a pile of rubble.

Characters advance by gaining experience on missions, and learn new super powers. You can either use the ones you're given in the campaign or create and import your own using a character creator that looks like it's straight out of one of those 200 pg table-top RPG creation guides. The possiblities are almost limitless, though the creation editor allows somewhat over-powered super-heroes early in the game. You can also play this game or compete online with your friends, in multiplayer mode.

On top of the great gameplay, style, and class that Freedom Force provides, there is also a killer soundtrack. The music was composed by someone truly in-tune with the style of the game itself. I found myself humming the overtures provided in some of the final battles days after playing the game.

Although the game is a little short, and can be beaten in a week or two, it is worth playing for the incrediblely accurate dialog, style, gameplay and music. Personally, I enjoy RPG campaigns that cap off before I *want* them to cap off. Being short and sweet keeps them from becoming monotonous.

It is not hard to believe that Freedom Force was made by the same great minds who brought us the wonderful System Shock series. Irrational Games is quickly becoming one of my favorite dev teams.

"Freedom Force - XP SP2"
Just a quick note to say I bought this game yesterday and today I find out it is not compatable with Windows XP SP2.
There is supposed to be a patch being worked on but it is three months since this was first mentioned.
I would recommend NOT buying this game if you have Windows XP SP2 - as its only useful as a drinks coaster unless a patch is made

"Superman vs. Wolverine! You name the battles!"
I rarely played the campaign game.

I always played the game using its service pack which unlocked/included a "Training Room" or war room. I have downloaded hundreds of costumes and meshes and sounds that others have uploaded to the internet. I then have created nearly 50 characters (limitless) to play and test in a one man standing against upto 50 enemies.

Characters like the X-Men and spiderman and such, cost few points, like 2k to 8k. My Superman character is nearly unstoppable at 35,000 points. At 50,000 points he is about the same, but then has all his little powers that not many know about, like his power to take the sun's life energy out of plant life (I found this in a thick comic book of BatMan... Dark Knight Returns?). I created other characters with well into the 100's of thousands of points, but Superman can take them all down eventually, except for one. If I take my superman's stats, and give him the ability to regenerate (like wolverine) he becomes unstoppable.

So I would see how smart I could play against these other superhero creations. I would have the computer play the enemies while I would choose an underdog to attempt to rise above the strong tactics the computer would use. Using Superman as an underdog, I would see who I could defeat, having to use different tactics against different opponents. So I battled against a regenerating superman. Oh man! This guy was crazy to fight! I had to be right on top of him all the time cause if he got hurt a little he would fly away while regenerating. My non regen superman died hundreds of times, until I finally started using his small and weak power to steal life energy. It kept him alive just long enough to continuously pomel the evil super guy.

I told my friend about it, being such an awesome game for so cheap, he went out and bought it during lunch one day. He loved it! Where I like punching, he liked other stuff and made a Storm character whose tornados would multiply. With one casting, it had destroyed the entire city's buildings to rubble. Very powerful.

My only complaints are that with so many others who love the game, I was never able to find/start a multiplayer game. If only the game company had advertised and gave out playable demos, then their success would have been realized all at once, and they could have hosted games like blizzard does, and hosted player uploadable content.

This game has so much un-realized potential...

"Online play is awful."
The offline, single-player mode was okay I guess -- not the best story, but excellent cut-scenes, recognizeable characters, and pretty even-handed challenges.

Once that was over, I tried the online play, and that was just TERRIBLE.

What I was hoping for: an online game where users would model their characters perhaps after popular comic book characters like Hulk, Spider-Man, Captain America, etc. and battle it out. As I recall I made myself a Hulk character to start out with -- impossibly strong, but also kind of slow.

Little did I realize that EVERYBODY online opts instead to use over-powered characters. If your character can't fly at incredible speeds and fire blasts that will instantly kill anyone, then forget about it. You can try to start a game up that limits the powers a character can have (by limiting the number of "points" the user can put towards the character), but nobody will play with you. They're all busy seeing who can press the "instant destruction ray" button faster. What fun.

"Stand Back Evil-Doer!"
If you don't enjoy this game, then you're taking video games WAY too seriously. This CD has not left my PC's CD drive in over three months. The back story's great. The graphics are excellent. Skinning your own characters is not hard at all. The voices, while somewhat hokey, are extremely accurate for the timeframe portrayed.

All in all, this is probably the most fun game I've ever purchased, and have been recommending it to everyone I know ever since I got it.

Button-mashers beware... You can't just punch your way through this game, you need to choose your heroes based on their strengths. If you don't like thinking, this game isn't for you.

Otherwise, get it... NOW!

"DO NOT BUY IF HAVE XP WITH SERVICE PACK 2", If you have Windows XP with Service Pack 2, this game will not work on your computer. In August, the makers had promised to make a patch when they had time. It is now February.

"Excellent tactical RPG", ** Update: the SP2 patch is out, as promised. It is at http://www.freedomfans.com/news.php?id=37 **

Other reviews here and in numerous gamezines cover the game itself well, but it should be noted that the review posted by "Your average computer geek" is factually incorrect. The developer is working to fix the SP2 problem. According to the developer (which has been active in supporting the game since its release):

Freedom Force and Windows XP Service Pack 2

There is a known compatibility issue with Freedom Force and the
new Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. We are working on a
solution and will post it here. We thank you for your patience.

Unofficially, the developer notes that work on the fix has been slowed by the scramble to get other new games ready for publication, but March is a likely release date.

"Doesn't work with Windows XP Service pack 2!", Don't buy this game if you're running Windows XP service pack 2.
It doesn't run, and the developer apparently has no plans to fix it.

"Great interactive RPG play, comicbookish or otherwise", To some, Freedom Force's comicbook appearance might put off some diehard RPG gamers, but most RPGers (comic-loving or not) would likely find the game worth the look. The protagonist characters are all 60s-style comicbook superheroes (none you'd recognize, as they were all created specifically for this game), complete with occasional booming puffed-chest declarations of good-guy righteousness. The setting is a fictional U.S. metropolis during the Red Scare period of the early 1960s, when a seemingly freak occurance (the sudden appearance of "Energy X" on Earth) transforms a scattering of the population into superpowered heroes and villians.

I'm not particularly partial to comicbook settings myself, but...

Freedom Force's gameplay is similar to a fantasy RPG, but more impressively interactive and flexible than most. Players initially control one hero character, the burly and highly patriotic Minuteman. Additional heroes are met and can be recruited over the course of the game, allowing you to play squads of up to four heroes at a time. Each new hero has a distinct set of superpowers (which can be trained and expanded as each gains more experience), and comes with his or her own comicbook origin movie (which make for amusing intermissions, in their cheesy 60s comicbook way). And while coordinating a squad of four varied superheroes can seem overwhelming at first, frequent use of the pause button (and a little practice) makes this much easier than it might initially seem (again, much like other RPGs).

The Freedom Force heroes find themselves called into situations in a variety of different settings (including cityscapes, parks, a battleship deck, caverns, and more) and against a diverse range of opponents (from city thugs to similarly empowered supervillians to giant insects and raging dinosaurs), requiring the player to consider different tactics for different situations. One of the best features of Freedom Force is the fact that most items encountered in the game (rocks, oil barrels, street light poles, cars, etc.) can be picked up and wielded or thrown. (My favorites are tossing explosive items such as TNT crates at approaching baddies, and ripping street lights from the corner sidewalk to wield for smackdown purposes.) Even most buildings can be brought down, including damage to anyone standing atop them at the time (although the local citizens don't always appreciate this tactic).

The storyline is distinctly linear, which may limit the appeal of repeat playthroughs of the game for some. But I am definitely enjoying my romp through this game so far (and equally enjoying my eight-year-old son's animated excitement as he watches me play, or as he works out his own manner of heroic doomsday prevention).

Freedom Force is definitely one of the more unique gaming experiences I've had. Note that if you're much into the realistic epics of some of the bloodier fantasy RPGs, then Freedom Force might not work for you, as its violence tends to be much more kid-friendly (lots of bashing, explosions, and the like, but no actual blood or death). But I enjoyed it enough that I'll be getting the sequel game (Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich), as well.

"One of my favorite games ever!", I had heard a lot of good things about this game, but it wasn't until I saw it on clearance one day that I could pick it up. I was expecting a lot and I wasn't let down.

Freedom Force plays off the Silver Age of comics full of stereotyped villains, goody-two-shoes heroes, and cheesy dialogue. It's like digital prozac! I got so much amusement out of classic little gems like:

Minuteman: Now to track down that pesky Ruskie and see what's what.

El Diablo: Giant robots?! That does it, I'm goin' back to the barrio where it's safe.

Ice Soldier 1: I can't stand being in this capitalist country. But I got a great deal on this coat.
Ice Soldier 2: In Motherland, you have to wait for hours in line for noe like this...
IS1: And it falls apart before you even get it home!
IS2: At least we have the glorious struggle of the worker to sustain us!
IS1: To be honest, I'm not too crazy about that either.

Pure gold. The gameplay was great too. Fully interactive environments and challenging opponents. The only time I felt a little disappointment was how easily I beat Nuclear Winter. The rest of the bosses, however, provided ample challenge and I had to carefully strategize and choose my team. Not always easy.

The diversity of missions and enemies was great. Some needed you to be stealthy, others needed fast and furious firepower. From mutants, to dinosaurs, to common thugs, there was no shortage of enemies to take down. And each one needed a different strategy to beat.

Let's not forget the character editor. I created so many custom heroes with that. You could make just about any power you wanted since there was no shortage of graphics effects and the abilities of each power were so easily altered to make each one unique.

I was unbelievably excited to hear the sequel announced not long ago and is supposed to be out sometime next year. I look forward to it and can't wait to buy it.

"Five Star Four Color Fun", This is a wonderful game!!! PC Gamer Magazine awarded it Game of the Month. In a genre dominated by fantasy, a superhero strategy RPG is a welcomed breath of fresh air. The single player game, on-line multiplayer game as well as the custom character creation make this a richly versatile game. Irrational Games know their comic book source material well. They were able to capture the perfect balance between parody and tribute without every falling into the silliness of total camp. The game is packed with fully developed characters that are each worthy of their own comic book title. The story of the single player game is well plotted and full of diverse missions and fun surprises along the way. Voice characterizations are creative and entertaining and the origin movies are a total hoot. I can't say enough great things about this game. Many who play this game have a minor complain that it is a challenge to multitask when managing a full team of four superheroes, but with a little practice and the essential pause function, you'll be managing your squad like a pro. Be sure to download both game patches to install the Danger Room. There are tons of fan sites to find custom skins, mods and hero recipes. The best is Alex's Freedom Fortress. .... A must for PC gamers and/or comic book fans.

"POW! ZAP! KABOOM! Super Hero's!", Great game, and very reasonable. Be warned though, the campaign is very short. Afterwards I got online and tried to play some multiplayer games. Everyone had at least 30,000 prestige hero's and the online matches only last about 5 minutes. Can't wait for the sequels.
