"OK product, crappy seller" I received my turntable in, what I thought, perfect condition. "Super Saver Shipping" is actually USP ground from NY, which takes all of eternity and then some, to arrive in CA.
The turntable itself looks sturdy, but I haven't been able to test anything else, as the needle it came with was BROKEN. Which now means I have to buy a $21 dollar replacement. Or wait through the living hell of returning the item to J&R, a seller that doesn't accept normal e-mail returns.
Amazon should really look into who sells on their website.
"Bad Vibrations" While looking for a replacement for my Bang & Olufsen BeoGram 1602 I found this Technics turntable. Since I have a very nice older Pioneer receiver, I wanted a turntable that didn't have a pre-amp built in. So this turntable looked perfect for what I was looking for. Once I had it all hooked up, I was so excited to listen to my new turntable. I put the needle down, the music began. I did not have the music at a very high level, but as soon as the music started, vibrations came through the platter and made a very very loud humming noise through the needle! While I have only owned a few turntables in my life, this is the first time I've ever had this problem. It can't take any vibrations at all, you will get a hum. This is a great turntable as long as you are not listening to music loud, or if you have speakers that are very far away from the turntable. I owned this player for a total of 10 seconds before I knew that it was the wrong one for me. I am now going to try out the Audio-Technica AT-PL120, I hope that one works better.
""It's good,but..."" I've owned two of these; the 2d,thru Amazon. The thing keeping the SLBD20D from achieving regulance is: Its tonearm's soulnuking habit of backtracking a 45r/m record's leadin groove and thus mathitting. That damn slidecontrol cueing is the reason, I think-it enables the tonearm to,I strongly feel/believe,disconcertingly "have a mind of its own". There's one/ONLY one,33r/m record that's happened to,w/my 2d SLBD20D:An original(1970)copy of "Funkadelic". Technics hella needs to abandon making the LAST LIVING T4P turntable w/slidecontrols,period.It's just played out.Oh,& by the way,Technics:no damn BUTTONS,either,or I'ma HIT SOME SERIOUS ROOF.
"good" I got this for my husband. He likes it. It works great. We haven't had any problems. We did need to order a pro amp to go with it so it would hook up to our system, but you can get that from the same place. Fast delivery also.
"High end specs in a budget table" I must disagree with parts of two previous reviews.
Regarding the review of Aug 11th: I am running the table with a Grado Black cartridge and it works perfectly. As a matter of fact, it is essential to ditch the supplies low quality cartridge and go with something else to get decent performance out of the table. There are very few full-frequency (range of at least 20-20,000 HZ), quality P-mount cartridges available and the Grado Black cartridge is one of them. Just make sure that the grounding wire is solidly attached to both the turntable and your phono preamp (or integrated receiver.)
Regarding the review of April 22nd: I have not noticed any speed instabilities. As a matter of fact, this tables listed specs with regards to speed variations / wow&flutter (0.06%) rank up there with, or actually better many high-end table (for example the $1200 Clearaudio Emotion turntable has wow/flutter of 0.2%, over 3X worse than the Technics.) Poor speed stability is very common among `high-end' tables for some unknown reason, and one reason why I feel no rush to `upgrade' tables anytime soon.
I wanted a turntable that was an automatic or at least had automatic return. There are very few decent-quality automatic turntables on the market when I purchased. About the only other game in town was Thorens, and I read many reviews mentioning their quality had gone far downhill some years ago. I even tried a head-to-head comparison against a fully-manual Project Debut III turntable, but the Debut III skipped like crazy no matter what I did, had no convenience features, and had no sonic advantage I could hear over the Technics.
Though no set up is required when using a P-mount cartridge system, I did check cartridge downforce using a cartridge scale and the cartridge alignment using several alignment gauges, just out of curiosity. I found the Technics to be set up with typical Japanese perfection. The alignment was spot on, as was the downforce. I have heard the Project turntables have terrible quality control as far as cartridge alignment and downforce setting from the factory. Improper set-up can ruin your records in a hurry.
I have had this table for over a year and have been extremely pleased with it. I even bought one for my mother. My system could be considered a true entry-level audiophile system (if there is such a thing) and while this table is the most inexpensive piece, it does not seem out of place because of its good sound quality when using the after market Grado Black cartridge. I am using the turntable in conjunction with a Cambridge Audio 640P phono preamp ($200, has a switchable rumble filter), Vincent Audio SP-31 Hybrid Tube preamplifier ($500), Onix Sp-3 stereo tube amplifier ($1,000), and Strata mini loudspeakers ($2,000). I clean all records on a Loricraft record cleaning machine ($2,200) before playing. Once cleaned, they can go years before needing another cleaning.
Last piece of advice for those thinking of upgrading to the high-end manual turntables. Go for it if you want, but before the table upgrade, I believe the best investment anyone can make is buying a good wet record cleaning machine. This opinion was stated in an article in Stereophile magazine. It may sound counterintuitive, but investing in a record cleaning machine, such as a VPI, Nitty Gritty, or my favorite, a Loricraft, will make a greater audible difference per dollar spent than dropping a fortune on a high-end turntable or cartridge. This is because most of the noise heard from records is from the gunk on them and no matter how great your table or cartridge, a dirty record still sounds like crap. A little-known fact: even brand new records have mold release compound on them (so the pressing plant can remove them from the pressing molds) that must be removed by a wet cleaning in order to remove built-in surface noise from the record. In short, a record cleaning machine is essential.

What our customer's say!
"Technics review SLBD20D", I had a technics product years ago that I loved. However, this model is very flat sounding. I am not sure that I want to keep it... The workmanship is not the greatest. Had to purchase a pre-amp that also doesn't cope well with "low freq".
Probably OK for someone who only wants to "play" old records it is fine.
"Great Product", This turntable works very well for me. It came shipped with the belt unattached to the drive motor pully which is an advantage to me. I was assured that the belt would not arrive weakened and stretched from unknown months/years in a warehouse. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that there was no strobe on the side to confirm RPM.
"Because I like records", I am not a sneering audiophile, just a dignified music lover who invested in hundreds of records in the 1980s and since. So I decided to upgrade my 20-year-old turntable with something reputable that wouldn't hurt the records but wouldn't cost multiple hundreds of dollars. I bought this turntable, and, at the advice of some other reviewers, the Grado black P-mount cartridge. Warning: it may be possible to break the tonearm by installing the cartridge carelessly, so unplug everything, lock down the arm, and proceed with great delicacy. My ears/speakers may not be good enough to appreciate the improvement the new ($60) cartridge has made--in any event I did not do controlled listening experiments--but it's nice that I have the original cartridge as a spare. My only problem with the turntable is the cuing arm drops the needle too quickly, making it slide off the runoff groove into the first track, possibly risking scratching the record. It is possible to set it down gently by manipulating the lever so, but that should happen automatically. Or be adjustable. Despite this flaw, I am very happy to have new and old turntables and cartridges to enjoy all this fine music, and in case this technology ever really does go obsolete. Because one of the other reviewers complained that the Grado cartridge buzzes, I thought I should add this review to say that it sounds great to me.
"Another satisfied user.", I bought the turntable last month since I decided to get back into playing vinyl LP's since used LP's are so cheap. I like being able to read the liner notes without using a magnifying glass. :-P I have a Radio Shack 50 watt per channel integrated amplifier with a phono input and a ground screw. I just put the turntable together, plugged it in and connected the ground wire. It works like a charm! Sounds great and plays all my records without a hitch (or skip). I read that the cartridge that came with it has a conicle needle and a cartidge upgrade would help so I got a Audio-Technica AT311EP replacement cartridge and put it on the turntable. No problems whatsoever. I'm happy and have been adding to my vinyl LP collection ever since.
"Satisfied customer", After not being able to listen to my records for many years, I bought this turntable. I was disappointed when the auto-return did not operate properly and I had to return it. However, the online return was very simple - I took it to Staples - and had a replacement, surprisingly, in a couple of days, probably before the defective one got back to the factory.
Now I am very satisfied with my purchase and have been enjoying my records, most of which are not available on CD. Some reviewers suggest that this turntable needs a better needle and cartridge. Unless you're an audiophile and have very sensitive ears, don't bother. The sound is just fine.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Very good hi-fi turntable", This is a very good turntable for home use, especially at it's price. You WILL need a phono pre-amp (Amazon carries several) to hook this up to either a home stereo or the audio inputs of you computer's sound card.
The cartridge/stylus combination is okay, but not great. I believe it has a conical stylus. You can make a big improvement by getting a better cartridge and an elliptical, bi-radial, or linear contact stylus. The analogy I'd make is the ear-buds that come with most MP3 players -- you can use them to hear the music, but you can make a big improvement by getting better headphones. This turntable uses P-mount cartridges, so it's very easy to swap them out.
This unit is replacing my old SL-BD1, which finally died after 20 years of good use. I expect this turntable to last a good long while..
"Excellent value", This is an extraordinary value, an excellent turntable for a modest audio system. I am using it with an Onkyo receiver and Polk 4a speakers and am thereby enjoying my record collection in the dining area of my kitchen. One important caveat is that the Grado black cartridge does not work with this turntable, it produces a strong hum even with the ground wire attached. The good news is that the cartridge which comes with the turntable is just fine. Very nice indeed!
"Solid inexpensive turntable", I've been using this turntable regularly for 8 or 9 years and it still works fine. It generally tracks records very well and I've never had to worry about skips. Sound quality is decent -- as another reviewer pointed out, inner groove performance is somewhat weak. The last third of every LP side never sounds nearly as good as the first third. But still listenable. You'll also notice some speed fluctuation if you listen to solo piano. But for the price it is a very good deal.
"Turntable is satisfying, cartridge could be better.", I wanted a turntable to play records from an old collection. I shopped and researched fairly extensively many higher and lower priced models and decided that this price point would do what I needed for the few records I had. I liked the semi automatic feature. I figured with a turntable, less is more and if I fell asleep while listening it would shut itself off. The operation of the turntable was excellent. Earlier, I had purchased a new Shure M93E cartridge ($20) for an old turntable in an attempt to salvage it (to no avail) and found that cartridge to be better in the SLD20D than the one that came with it. The highs were much cleaner, with almost no distortion. I eventually bought quite a few additional lps on EBay to supplement my collection. That's how satisfying the sound was. The turntable is great, but I gave Panasonic 4 stars because they could have included a better cartridge for a little more money.
"Technics SLBD20D", I have thoroughly enjoyed this turntable. Two minor issues: No manually adjustable pitch and a relatively low output level.... That said, this is fine budget turntable!
